4641  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / R&P Decision on: October 12, 2004, 10:08:50 PM
Quote from: "jblank"

No more a generalization than what you and others have said or implied, when comments are made that adding R & P would basically lead to the end of CG, or that somehow the R & P posters at GG were the "sewer" type posters before the split into an R & P forum there.

Wait a minute now, come on down off that cross.  While I can't speak for whiteboyskim (though I'll bet he would concur), when I agreed with his "sewer" comment, I meant the discussions and their tendency to get ugly with a quickness - not the people involved.

Bottom line to all this, which has been stated already ad nauseum:  This is not Gone Gold.  It will never be Gone Gold.  So don't try to make it Gone Gold.

Oh - another thought I had.  For books/music/movies/games, I find that is a much better option as long as you don't need to sell the items and/or get the cash immediately.  The whole issue with feedback and deadbeat buyers is largely non-existent.

4648  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Need some advice from E-Bay sellers on: October 12, 2004, 07:13:04 PM
That's what I'd do - just jump in.  I'd start with small items though - so in the off chance that something *does* go wrong, it's not a big deal.  I've sold hundreds of items over ebay, and very rarely had a problem.  My only advice is to be *very* specific about your item, and what you are and are not willing to do (i.e. ship overseas, accept escrow, etc.)
4649  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [xbox] Got KOTOR, now what?? on: October 12, 2004, 07:08:07 PM
You can safely ignore Lord Ebonstone.  KOTOR is a great game at five times that price, and for $10 it's an absolute steal.  It's the first game I've played in a *long* time that kept me riveted until the end... you know, one of those where you ignored all the other crap you needed to do (like sleep, work, eat, etc.) just to finish *one more quest*

What does  No Comply mean?  What am I not complying with?  It appears to be "jump over things."

"No Comply" is simply the name of the move.  And yes, it's basically a little hop.

What is the difference between an Acid Drop and a Revert?  It appears to me to be the same thing - a way to land on a ramp without wiping out.

I'm not sure about the acid drop, but a revert is simply a move done at the end of a ramp landing where you shift your board 180.  Just another way to link moves.

I'm no programmer, but I'm sure it's incredibly difficult to write code for multiple operating systems at once.  I mean, how many websites run on Windows but not Mac OS (and sometimes vice versa)?

There are a few - some sites (mostly banks) check for Internet Explorer 6, and since such a beast doesn't exist on the Mac, there ya go.  As well as sites that utilize ActiveX plugins
4665  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is backwards compatibility a big deal? on: June 21, 2004, 04:14:44 PM
It's definitely important... I don't want to have a closet full of ancient consoles just in case I have the urge to play game X somewhere down the road.  With backwards compatibility, I can toss/sell the old console (as I did with my PS1) once the next gen console is released.  Not to mention the fact that consoles will eventually break down and die... with backwards compatibility, you don't have to worry if your old console can still boot up, or go through ridiculous steps like turning your PS1 upside down or blowing on your NES cartridges until you're blue in the face.

The one time I laughed was when the GBA first came out and Tyco (I think) was sitting there playing with it and each panel had more and more light in it. That one was spot-on.

It's usually the sublte "secondary" joke that makes for the good strips... the main plot (as it were) is rarely worthwhile.

Such as this one...

The dialogue isn't the funny part - it's the fact that those huge things are supposed to be the Xbox controllers.

One thing it did mention was that you needed the PS2 HD and broad band adapter.

I bet you could put a bigger HD in but I think you would have to buy their HD kit (currently only sold with FF11 far as I know) to get the special connectors to the PS2.

So the initial outlay is more that just for their fairly reasonable software...more like $100 plus their software.

My understanding is as long as you have the broadband adapter, you can use your own hard drive - the "official" Sony drive isn't necessary.

From the website which shall not be named...

Hard Disk Drive Compatibility:

HDLoader is compatible with all official Sony PS2 INTERNAL hard disk drives,
and most other standard IDE hard disk drives with a capacity of 40GB or larger. There are issues with some modern Segate drives, which cause problems when used in conjunction with older models of the official Sony PS2 network adapter.

If HDLoader freezes at the splash screen for you, then it is due to this conflict. In order to resolve this you will either need to purchase a new hard disk drive or network adapter (if you need to get a new network adapter, try and get one that includes the modem).

I just like the idea of being able to consolidate... I have all my DVDs in a 300 disc jukebox and all my CDs ripped to my iPod.  I keep the actual discs in boxes in the basement.  Makes for a much neater living environment.  $30 isn't a bad deal, and I have a couple of 80GB drives just lying around, so why not?

Yeah, people are going to use it for nefarious purposes, but as Fellow pointed out, if people are motivated to pirate, they'll do it regardless.

Not trying to cause a fuss, just curious.

(I apologize in advance if this is considered too close to "piracy")

Anyone else heard of this?  Basically, they allow you to copy games onto the PS2 hard drive (or add one of your own!), and play them directly from the hard drive (a la a modded Xbox).

I'm a sucker, and ordered one, despite the fact I only own about 6 PS2 games, but love hack-ish technology like this smile

I've noticed that as well - it's particularly bad in, say, EGM.  I went through one issue and dogtagged every page that had some kind of emphasis on the mammaries.  Needless to say, I marked nearly half the magazine.

What kills me, is that people complain that gaming isn't taken seriously as an "adult" hobby, yet the games and magazines are littered with these sophomoric, wildly exaggerated portrayals of females.  Of *course* the general public is going to look at that and come to the conclusion that games are only for pubescent males who have never kissed anyone other than their mom.

It's embarrasing - I was out of town for two weeks, and had my neighbor pick up my mail for me.  While I was gone, the latest issue of CGW (I think) came in with some ridiculously proportioned 38 DDDD charater on the front cover - I can only imagine what my neighbor thought when she saw that.
