I'm just questioning the sort of environment you guys are expecting here, I suppose I was just assuming we were all working towards a mature message board that frowns on moronic threads and posts that add absolutely no insight to the subject.

Tell me then so I can get this straight: I can go into every thread if I feel like it, and just say "fuck [the topic]" randomly at will? If thats the case fine, I'll lower my expectations when making a thread, understanding that there is infact no level of maturity or quality required, and I'll act the same if I feel like being an asshole. I don't very much like GTA: San Andreas, I'm gonna go into all the threads posted on it and reply "fuck GTA: San Andreas"... (not really going to do it but I suppose I could without breaking the rules?) That would really attract intelligent discussions or even members from development teams, wouldn't it?

:Sigh: I guess I just had my own lofty expectations coming from GoneGold.

Who do folks here think was/is the greatest, most entertaining lead singer of a rock band?  For me, even in a field that has Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Mick Jagger, there can be only one:

Freddie Mercury

Good call.  Whatever that current commercial is that uses "I Want To Break Free" has got me listening to Queen again - particularly their live shows - and he is a brilliant frontman.  His musical/vocal talent and undeniable showmanship just put him a notch above just about everyone else.

Edit: Devil beat me to it - nice to know I'm not the only one seeing the contradiction.

Anyway, to stay on topic...

I really have no interest in GTA:SA - the previous games were mildly entertaining, but I never got into them like everyone else.  So I'll take a pass, go back to the Xbox double pack and see if I can figure out what I'm missing smile

4613  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [Dating] Frequency of calls early on? on: October 25, 2004, 06:53:19 PM
You'd think at 32 I'd have this stuff down, but the majority of my dating life prior to this year has been with girls I already knew well - friends, friends of friends, etc... people I already had a rapport with.  But this year I've been dating a lot of people that I barely know, which makes calling them up a bit tricky - particularly at the very beginning.  Once you've gone out with someone and said "yeah, I'd like to pursue this", how often should you call?  Of course the trick is calling often enough to show interest, without calling so often that you come off as clingy.... I'm just not sure where that line is - calls would be as far apart as possible in my perfect world, as I hate using the telephone, but chicks like to, y'know, TALK and crap like that... Tongue

Thoughts from the peanut gallery?

Is it an external hard drive? Because, yeah, a Mac can read an external Windows formatted hard drive (at least, in my experience). Of course, the system disk has to be HFS+.

Macs can't write to NTFS drives (unless something has changed).  So, if you want your external drive to be read/writable by both OSX and Windows, you either have to stick with FAT32 (yuck), or buy a copy of MacDrive (better)

Personally, I don't think it is.  There's nothing wrong with OS X, but it's certainly not the computing nirvana that the Macolytes claim.  It does some things better than Windows, and it does some things worse than Windows.  Some people will point to the lack of viruses and spyware, but honestly they're not a problem on my Windows machines either.  And if there ever is a serious OS X virus, it's going to tear through Mac systems like tissue paper because no one is protected.

That's unlikely. By default, every Mac system is protected because it has inherently more security, due to the very tight Unix permissions model. Most Windows users run in the equivalent of Root mode, which is not an active option in Mac OS X. There is no way a virus on your Mac could actually damage the Mac OS without you giving it explicit permission to do so, and even then the damage it could do would be very limited.

And that's precisely the attitude I'm talking about.

So you're saying there are no holes anywhere that can be exploited?  The dozen or so security updates I've installed this year seem to say otherwise.  Not running as root doesn't guarantee anything.  Yes, it's *more* secure, but it's not foolproof.

Pride goeth before the fall, and all that.

4630  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Thinking of buying an Apple computer on: October 20, 2004, 01:06:56 AM
I had the same urges last year, and I ended up getting an iBook... which I think was a wise decision.  It was a relatively small cash outlay compared to the rest of the Apple line ($1099), it gave me a good feel for the OS X environment, and the cost was easily recoupable... Mac laptops tend to hold their value much better than the desktop models.  While there was still some warranty left on it, I sold it for $850 on ePay, and put it towards the price of a new Powerbook.

Another reason I'd recommend the iBook - Apple *today* refreshed their iBook line, and the 12" iBook is now only $999 with a 1.2Ghz processor, 256MB and built-in wireless support.  A great bargain anyway you slice it, and if you decide it's not for you, you're not out $2000 or more, or stuck with a 50lbs boat anchor (the eMac)

I've been exposed to vague statements like, "Macs rock," "OS X is light years ahead of anything else," "Once you go Mac you'll never go back". Is that crap true?

Personally, I don't think it is.  There's nothing wrong with OS X, but it's certainly not the computing nirvana that the Macolytes claim.  It does some things better than Windows, and it does some things worse than Windows.  Some people will point to the lack of viruses and spyware, but honestly they're not a problem on my Windows machines either.  And if there ever is a serious OS X virus, it's going to tear through Mac systems like tissue paper because no one is protected.

I use my Mac for video production mostly.  Which it does very well, at a relatively low cost.  But I don't ever see it replacing my Windows PC as my primary computer.

What annoys me is the idea that "if I so choose" I CANNOT play the single player game without registering the thing (assuming this is true, still don't have a definite confirmation on that).

I mean suppose you fast forward 10 years and you build a retro box with an ancient P4 processor and a paltry gig of ram, and want to dust off your old Half Life 2 CD.  Whoops!  Won't work without Steam registration.  But as we all know Valve folded in the Great Crash of 2011, and there is no such thing as Steam.  Tough shit, you can't play Half Life 2 again unless you hunt around for arcane workarounds on the internet.

I just think it's a crappy precedent for single player games, if true.  You shell out for the CD, you play the game -- should be as simple as that.

I'd be very surprised if somewhere down the line (after they've milked HL2 for all they can) Valve doesn't release a patch that eliminates the need to connect to Steam.

There's a PF Chang's in Charlotte, NC.

I haven't been, and probably never will. I don't like trendy restuarants, and don't like eating with rich snobby trendy people.

I can't speak for the one in Charlotte, but the one down the street from me is hardly "rich snobby trendy people" turf.  Occasionally you'll see a famous musician in there, but that's due to it's location (it's surrounded by studios), not any inherent trendiness.  You can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting someone in the music business.

I've spent $80 there on a date, but it was Valentine's Day, and we went with the expensive wine and tipped the waitress very well.

Lettuce wraps - OK, but they tend to disintegrate in your gands after the first couple of bites.

My only other question before I pull the trigger on EBGames special is how are the graphics holding up? I understand the XBox has a vid card roughly equivalent to a GeForce 3 Ti200.

Given I do not have HDTV, how would readers rate graphics compared to the PC (I have a ATi 9800 pro). Certainly I do not expect on par graphics. I just don't know how much of a come down it will be.

There are quite a few Xbox games that have excellent graphics... while it doesn't have the raw power of a modern PC, the games can be optimized much better since it's a closed, singular platform.  And most games are locked at a resolution of 640x480 (since standard TVs can't display much higher than that), they can really crank up the eye candy, if not the resolution itself.
4638  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What compelled you to go Console? on: October 17, 2004, 11:08:06 PM
I was a complete anti-console snob from the day I got a Commodore 64 for Christmas - in fact, I was head of the "Nintendo Haters Club" forum in the early days of AOL.  Then in early 1997 for whatever reason I was compelled to get a Playstation, and it just snowballed from there.  Now, I enjoy both console and PC games - they're different, yet equally enjoyable experiences. I think I realized that as I have less and less time to spend on gaming these days, consoles are a better fit for my lifestyle.  But I can't give up PC gaming, because my favorite genre (FPS) is still better overall on the PC than on consoles.  And I enjoy the hardware tweaking/upgrading aspect of PCs as well.
