4481  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Which games will you pack away with your system? on: December 07, 2004, 03:54:09 PM
Actually, I'm pretty close to that point with my PS2 and Gamecube... unless they're exclusive AAA titles, I buy everything for the Xbox these days.  With that being said, here's what I'll probably save (barring any end-of-life bargain bin purcahses):

GC:
Metroid Prime
Resident Evil
Resident Evil Zero
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker

PS2:
Uhh...

Man, I'm having a hard time thinking of *any* game I must keep for the Playstation.  Actually, I imagine my PS2 will find it's way to eBay before long.

Does not and will not play DVDs in progressive mode.

That is one of the crappy things about the XBox. The PS2 does do a progressive output for the DVD's. Why the hell did Microsoft cripple the Xbox?

The PS2 didn't have progressive DVD output until the last major revision (not the PSTwo, the revision that removed the i.link connector)

Maybe they don't go to "Sent" until they are read by the recipient?  I was wondering that too, so that was the best guess I had.

I sent a test message to myself and this does seem to be the case.  The message moved from my Outbox to the Sentbox after I opened it from the Inbox.

Yep - it stays in your Outbox until the recipient reads it, then it's moved to Sentbox.

4488  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Why the hell would you take this stuff? on: November 30, 2004, 05:16:31 AM
Like Punisher said, the side effects don't affect everyone - usually just a very small %... for example, Propecia (the hair-loss-stopping pill) can cause decreased sex drive, but only in 1-2% of the men who use it.

That's ridiculously cheap for a laptop - if price is your biggest concern, go for it.

Ivan Sulik (who used to be on IGN PC if I remember) has his additional comments on Page 4 of the review and he really rails into the game and how disappointed he is in it.

That sucks - he seems to confirm the fears of myself and others that the changes to appeal to a broader audience only take away from what made the first one so good.

Have you ever heard of a parade happening in either April or early October? Me neither.

Actually, yeah - the town I grew up in was/is famous for their "Mule Day" parade in early April - 200,000+ people show up in this town of 30,000 every spring for the parade.  It's actually pretty nice - bring a blanket and stretch out in one of the yards of the antibellum homes that are along the parade route.  Only problem is, as the name implies, there are a lot of mules/horses/donkeys and all the mess that goes along with that.

America's not any more or less religious than it ever was.  It's just that the religious-right has a more vocal platform now, with Bush, a born-again Christian, as president.

History lesson - most of our presidents have at least claimed to be "born-again Christians".  Bush is not an anomaly.

And Apollo - is there some reason a person can't be a Christian, yet "laid back easy going?"  That describes the majority of my friends - who happen to be Christians as well.  Try not to paint us with such a broad brush, kthxbai biggrin

Honestly, I'll never understand how someone could pass up a great game simply because of the art style. Good games are good games.

And a large part of the gaming experience are the visuals.  Considering how much emphasis both developers and gamers put on graphics, it's obviously an important part of the whole package.  And the more stylized the graphics get, the more polarizing they're going to be.  I don't want to spend 40 hours looking at art that I find unattractive, no matter how good the underlying game mechanics are.
4502  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Challenge this... on: November 19, 2004, 03:38:46 PM
Or find another job.  Working at EA isn't a "gotta have this job to eat" situation like someone who has to work at McDonalds or Wal-Mart just to survive.  People *choose* to work there.  Yeah, you love games.  Yeah, you want to work at one of the biggest game creators.  The thing is, you have to decide whether or not the job is worth the demands put upon you.  Anyone who pays attention to the gaming industry knows it's one of the most demanding areas of software development, with extended crunch time being the rule, not the exception.  You get paid next to nothing, with no chance for royalties - especially in a corporate environment like EA.  You more than likely will be let go if the title is a flop.  Or even if it's a success.  That's just the nature of the industry.  It sucks, but that's the way it is.  I don't care how much I like a job, if I'm treated like crap, I tender my resignation and find something else.  It's like restaurant servers who complain about having to rely on tips... no one is forcing you to work there!  If you don't like the pay or the conditions, Leave!  Find something you really want to do, in an environment that agrees with you ,and go do it!

480p (which is the highest resolution of most Xbox games) is not "high definition" smile 720p/1080i is, but very few Xbox games support those higher resolutions.

Wow - I didn't realize there were that many... last time I checked there were only a handful.  But my main point stands - most games only support 480p, which isn't "high def" smile

Lot of votes for System Shock 2 here, but I'm going to go with System Shock 1 - that game had me wound so tightly that I practically jumped out of my seat once simply due to the elevator door closing unexpectedly.

And there was one scene at the hunting lodge in Gabriel Knight 2, that while not particularly scary, really creeped me out for a long time afterward.

Why should I be patient?  They created a system to make themselves more money (by not using VU for distribution) and now the consumer is getting screwed out of playing a game they legally bought.

Woke up around 3, restarted steam for teh unlock, then went back to bed.  Played for about an hour this morning, and so far it's awesome.  I also got Halo 2 yesterday, but I have a feeling that's going to be on the backburner until I finish Half-Life 2.  I was surprised at how well it ran - I started off at 1024x768, 2xAA, 8xAni and expected it to bring my computer to it's knees, but it's pretty fluid.  Making the supporting characters have a larger role this time around was a great call by Valve - they are probably the most believable characters in any game to date, and really do add to the experience.

Oh, and I dig the upgraded Barnacles smile
