Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half Life 2 gold? You bet! (Nov. 16th release)
|
on: October 18, 2004, 03:54:08 PM
|
What annoys me is the idea that "if I so choose" I CANNOT play the single player game without registering the thing (assuming this is true, still don't have a definite confirmation on that).
I mean suppose you fast forward 10 years and you build a retro box with an ancient P4 processor and a paltry gig of ram, and want to dust off your old Half Life 2 CD. Whoops! Won't work without Steam registration. But as we all know Valve folded in the Great Crash of 2011, and there is no such thing as Steam. Tough shit, you can't play Half Life 2 again unless you hunt around for arcane workarounds on the internet.
I just think it's a crappy precedent for single player games, if true. You shell out for the CD, you play the game -- should be as simple as that. I'd be very surprised if somewhere down the line (after they've milked HL2 for all they can) Valve doesn't release a patch that eliminates the need to connect to Steam.

There's a PF Chang's in Charlotte, NC.
I haven't been, and probably never will. I don't like trendy restuarants, and don't like eating with rich snobby trendy people. I can't speak for the one in Charlotte, but the one down the street from me is hardly "rich snobby trendy people" turf. Occasionally you'll see a famous musician in there, but that's due to it's location (it's surrounded by studios), not any inherent trendiness. You can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting someone in the music business. I've spent $80 there on a date, but it was Valentine's Day, and we went with the expensive wine and tipped the waitress very well. Lettuce wraps - OK, but they tend to disintegrate in your gands after the first couple of bites.

My only other question before I pull the trigger on EBGames special is how are the graphics holding up? I understand the XBox has a vid card roughly equivalent to a GeForce 3 Ti200.
Given I do not have HDTV, how would readers rate graphics compared to the PC (I have a ATi 9800 pro). Certainly I do not expect on par graphics. I just don't know how much of a come down it will be. There are quite a few Xbox games that have excellent graphics... while it doesn't have the raw power of a modern PC, the games can be optimized much better since it's a closed, singular platform. And most games are locked at a resolution of 640x480 (since standard TVs can't display much higher than that), they can really crank up the eye candy, if not the resolution itself.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What compelled you to go Console?
|
on: October 17, 2004, 11:08:06 PM
|
|
I was a complete anti-console snob from the day I got a Commodore 64 for Christmas - in fact, I was head of the "Nintendo Haters Club" forum in the early days of AOL. Then in early 1997 for whatever reason I was compelled to get a Playstation, and it just snowballed from there. Now, I enjoy both console and PC games - they're different, yet equally enjoyable experiences. I think I realized that as I have less and less time to spend on gaming these days, consoles are a better fit for my lifestyle. But I can't give up PC gaming, because my favorite genre (FPS) is still better overall on the PC than on consoles. And I enjoy the hardware tweaking/upgrading aspect of PCs as well.

R&P as a seperate forum is just something that some people find important. You can't just tell them "absolutely not" and expect them all to be just happy. Heh, am I the only one that noticed that most of the people that NEED a seperate R&P forum are the ones that were up in arms about it when GG created one? Nope... I had the same thought

Yes, it does seem like some of the community has gone over there, for whatever reason. I'm not a big fan of the community splintering off into these two camps, so I am not sure why Peacedog & Co decided to open that forum up....well no, I think I do know why they did it, but thats another story. Ron has been very nice so far with letting this feel like home to many people from Gone Gold. I have made a couple posts over there, but I like the feel of this forum more, so far. Same here... this is more like the GG of old that I remember. Brutesquad, meh... I haven't even registered there, and doubt I ever will. How about we let this feel like something NEW, fun, and excellent in its own right, instead of somewhat sadly hanging on to something that was bigger in our minds than it ever was practically? GG was a shell of a site in many, many ways for a long time (and those that have been there for 3-4 years know what I am talking about). Why does CG have to be like GG? Let it be something different, and maybe in its own way better. I know there is a need to reminisce(sic) about all things, but at some point, it ceases to be a useful exercise and starts to appear desperate. I agree with this as well... it really started to get on my nerves when some folks felt the need to turn this to GG immediately with the whole R&P discussion. CG has plenty of upside of it's own, without having to be the red-headed stepchild of GG.

I've given this alot of thought. What I would like is a special power that you can use once per day. Sort of a mind zotch. See you have said driver you mind zotch him and what happens is they shit themselves and pull off to the side of the road and fall asleep. Hence no permanent injury and the hopefully after the person comes to after having slept in shit and piss realize that perhaps he/she should become a more aware driver.
Ascendent I remember some comedian had a bit about how he wanted to invent a gun that would kill people for five minutes... of course, it's primary target would be idiot drivers.

The game, a key title for MS' console in the run up to Christmas, is believed to have surfaced on Usenet and the web last night, possibly in the form of a localised French version, according to early reports. French version? There's a joke in there somewhere about every button causes Master Chief to drop his weapons...

The Tri-Fighter, aka the precursor to the TIE fighter with three curving wings and guns mounted between each wing. They shoot red lasers.
The ARC Clonefigthter, aka the precursor to X-Wing, with three wings on each side.
A gigantic starship being sprayed by streams of something that looks like dense acid.
Good to hear... one of the biggest issues I've had with the prequel trilogy, is that for a series called "Star Wars", there have been precious few space battles in Eps 1 & 2. The bit with Obi Wan and Jango Fett in the asteroid field was pretty cool, but other than that, bupkus.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 news - does this actuall make people feel better?

Meh - I found a "show stopper" in the original Half-Life (making it impossible to get out of the dumpster after you were knocked out), a bug which made it impossible for me to continue, but didn't affect the majority of gamers. It was eventually patched, but while it was severe for me, I was in the distinct minority. I would imagine this is the kind of thing they're talking about, not bugs that will affect every player every time.

I've been a happy tivo-er for about 2 years now. Love it and wouldn't go back to regular television/vcr combo. question though? what's the "lifetime basic tivo" service you mentioned? I thought there was only one tivo service for subscribers? (granted, i haven't looked tivo's pricing plans since I got it) The "basic Tivo" thing comes with DVD/Tivo combo devices - it's not available for standalone Tivo units, and honestly, it's pretty useless. Only three days of program info, no season passes, no smart recording options, etc.

There was the great Mod Uprising which resulted, I feel, in the complete joke that was the GG moderation upon the forum's demise last week Excuse me? Wow, and I thought Rich saying the site had "gone to hell" was a slap in the face to those of us who volunteered... I'm not even a GoneGold mod and I found that post from "Mr. Skim" annoyingly insulting. And I had all sorts of warm fuzzy feelings towards the CG staff too. Yeah, that welcome mat lasted what, a whole three days? As noted in another post, the membership of this forum has more then tripled over the past few days. You'd think they'd be thankful for the increased traffic... I'm sure they are. But that doesn't mean they have to be subject to the whinging of a few who expect this to be a duplicate of GG. They took the idea of R&P under consideration, and turned it down. I fail to see how continuing to discuss the issue any further is going to help.

The last CD of his I bought was Crystal Planet - it was pretty good, but didn't have the spark of his first few CDs... the songs all sounded pretty similar, whereas on "Surfing" and "Flying", nearly every song had it's own unique identity. Even the songs he sang on... "Big Bad Moon" rocks out loud.
I particularly dig the Dreaming #11 EP - the live version of Ice 9 is one of my favorite instrumentals ever.

No more a generalization than what you and others have said or implied, when comments are made that adding R & P would basically lead to the end of CG, or that somehow the R & P posters at GG were the "sewer" type posters before the split into an R & P forum there.
Wait a minute now, come on down off that cross. While I can't speak for whiteboyskim (though I'll bet he would concur), when I agreed with his "sewer" comment, I meant the discussions and their tendency to get ugly with a quickness - not the people involved. --- Bottom line to all this, which has been stated already ad nauseum: This is not Gone Gold. It will never be Gone Gold. So don't try to make it Gone Gold.

Oh - another thought I had. For books/music/movies/games, I find that half.com is a much better option as long as you don't need to sell the items and/or get the cash immediately. The whole issue with feedback and deadbeat buyers is largely non-existent.

That's what I'd do - just jump in. I'd start with small items though - so in the off chance that something *does* go wrong, it's not a big deal. I've sold hundreds of items over ebay, and very rarely had a problem. My only advice is to be *very* specific about your item, and what you are and are not willing to do (i.e. ship overseas, accept escrow, etc.)

You can safely ignore Lord Ebonstone. KOTOR is a great game at five times that price, and for $10 it's an absolute steal. It's the first game I've played in a *long* time that kept me riveted until the end... you know, one of those where you ignored all the other crap you needed to do (like sleep, work, eat, etc.) just to finish *one more quest*

What does No Comply mean? What am I not complying with? It appears to be "jump over things."
"No Comply" is simply the name of the move. And yes, it's basically a little hop. What is the difference between an Acid Drop and a Revert? It appears to me to be the same thing - a way to land on a ramp without wiping out. I'm not sure about the acid drop, but a revert is simply a move done at the end of a ramp landing where you shift your board 180. Just another way to link moves.
