SteamOS will be available on December 13, though it sounds like it won't exactly be ready for prime time.

This type of North American-centric thinking seems pretty representative of the problems MS has had in the past (huge controllers and consoles in Japan) and possibly in the future with the Xbox One.

The S controller was designed specifically for the Japan launch.  I don't deny that there are examples of Microsoft being tone-deaf to other parts of the world, but that wasn't one of them.

I've been receding slowly for 20 years now, but only in the front.  Unfortunately the top of my head is starting to thin now, so I'm guessing I've got a couple of years before I need to shave it all off.  Most of my peers are already mostly bald and/or grey, so I can't complain.
47  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: How has your life changed since the last "next gen"? on: November 22, 2013, 11:35:00 PM
My now-wife bought me a 360 as a Christmas present.  After these past 8 years, she won't be making that mistake again smile  At the time I was living the bachelor life for a little bit longer in a one bedroom apartment.  Now I'm in the 'burbs with a wife and two kids after years of infertility treatments and adoption rigmarole.  Still at the same employer, but my job responsibilities have changed significantly and I'm much happier career-wise than I was back then.

I was 18 months out from my cancer diagnosis in 03, and still very unsure what the future held.  Celebrated 10 years in remission this fall.

Quote from: Exodor on November 21, 2013, 09:39:01 PM

Since then I've lost my wife to cancer and dealt with raising a now-8 year old myself.  I've loved and lost and now find myself in love again with an amazing woman who shares many of my nerdy hobbies.  I didn't get a Ps3 until several years after launch and it's now a dedicated BluRay player as all my gaming takes place on the PC.

It's been a very eventful 8 years.

To say the least... holy crap man, I don't know if you've shared that here before, but if you did I missed it.  My condolences on the loss of your wife, and congrats on the new woman and being a kickass single dad.

I dunno if Atari 2600's Video Olympics was the worst game I ever played, still thinking A2600 Pac Man, but Video Olympics was by far the largest disappointment for me. And it was the first video game I chose to buy. When my parents gave in to my nagging about getting an Atari 2600 they said I could choose a single game for it. I had played a bunch of the games in Sears or what not but having a single choice I wanted to pick a game that would last. So I saw Video Olympics. The game cover was awesome as it showed a bunch of athletes playing various sport games. And in red letters the package hyped that there were 50 sport games in the cartridge!  I was like if it has 50 games in it I could play it forever! It would be totally stupid not to get this game!

Well I was pretty naive in what to expect. When I gleefully shoved the cartridge in and turned on the system staring back at me was Pong. The 50 "sports" games were just variations on Pong. To make matters worse they were only 2-player games. And on top of that you needed the paddle controllers to play which we did not have.

To be fair, Video Olympics was a 2600 launch title, so we're talking 1977 or so.  Video games in general hadn't progressed much past Pong variants yet.  But yeah, it does not hold up well at all, even compared to other 2600 games.

Good on 'em for getting semi-official support from Valve.  I'll buy the retail version just to throw them some bucks for a job well done, but honestly, the current free version is excellent as-is.

Bottom line is, speaking from someone that has a PS4 and have been playing it all week, Xbone is pushing the envelope.

The more I reviews I read about the Xbone, the more intrigued I am.  My current consoles do more "family media" than gaming these days... If they can work out all the kinks and have it function like I'm sure they want it to, it could be very interesting.  Considering how drastically different the 360 from 2005 is compared to today, I'm sure it will get there - eventually.

For AC, I briefly played the first one but was turned off by the Sci Fi concept.  Silly, I know, it was just my reaction.  How are the stories once get into them?  Is the out of body part a big portion of the games or just an excuse to constantly move environments/settings?  I haven't followed the series at all.  I see AC4 was released today.  Would that perhaps be a good place to start?

The first one was almost a tech demo - you can safely ignore that one.  AC2 and AC: Brotherhood are considered the best of the series by a lot of people.  Not sure how AC4 stacks up yet.

The sci-fi stuff is around the periphery, but the meat of the game is exploring the historical eras and being a general badass.

Pac-Man for the 2600 was far worse, because everyone knew what Pac-Man was supposed to be like, and it was a far cry from the arcade version.

You are 100% correct about that. Pac Man was a travesty on the 2600. I also seem to recall they priced it higher, like $60, which just added to the disappointment. Although I only played ET a bit it just seemed like a confusing game to me.

I can still clearly recall the terrible Pac Man dot munching and power pellet sounds. That's how badly memorable the whole package was.

Indeed.  The sounds were picked up by some sound sample library, and for the next 15 years, they were used on any and every TV show where a video game was being played.  That and 2600 Donkey Kong.  The video game version of the Wilhelm Scream.

My name is Laner, and I have not purchased a next-gen console.

Not to say I don't want one, I just don't have that kind of money lying around at the moment, particularly with Christmas bearing down on us.  And due to Steam/PS+/Xbox sales I have literally hundreds of games I have yet to finish.

If backwards compatibility was included, or proper DLNA support out of the box for the PS4, I would be more inclined to jump in early.  But for the moment I'm OK to wait.

you know, that might be mine too.  I remember playing a ton of it as a kid, well before I knew the game sucked.

I still hold that game isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be.  Mediocre, yes.  It's biggest crime was being was a high profile game that was rushed out the door.  Yeah, it's not the most intuitive game, but any 2600 game that tried to be more than an arcade port was pretty much impenetrable without the manual (and often even with the manual).

Pac-Man for the 2600 was far worse, because everyone knew what Pac-Man was supposed to be like, and it was a far cry from the arcade version.

I've got a cart for my 2600 that has every game ever commercially released, and it is littered with games that make E.T. look like Half-Life in comparison.

Can't believe I forgot Fallout 3/New Vegas.  Potentially a contender for #1.

Either AC: revelations on the ps3, (going to try to power through it and ac3 for when I get AC4) or KOTOR on the PC.

My recommendation for Revelations is that you stick to the story quests and avoid as much of the secondary stuff as you can.  That includes the bonus "constraint" objectives.  Speaking as someone who finished every last one of them, I can assure they are poorly designed and absolutely not worth the aggravation.  Oh, and do the "Animus Island" content about Desmond -- the first-person platforming is stupid, but the backstory will be valuable for AC3.

In AC3, you should spend as much time completing hunting challenges, building up the homestead, unlocking fast travel stations, and completing those stupendous naval missions as you possibly can.  That's easily the best part of the game.  By contrast, the main plot is such an tangled warren of logical holes and narrative dead ends, your best bet is to put it off as long as possible and then power through it as quickly as possible to reach the end.

You definitely do want to see the ends of these games -- Assassin's Creed games have become famous for packing really awesome stuff into the denouement -- but the process of getting there might make you roll your eyes so much that you get dizzy and pass out.  STICK IT OUT!

-Autistic Angel

Gracias... I got sucked into all of the side content & collectibles in AC2 and Brotherhood, but I know if I don't "critical path" Revelations and AC3, it'll be a couple of years before I get around to 4, and I'm really eager to sail the high seas.

My most memorable was the 360 launch.  I preordered one from Circuit City and received it on launch day... my fiance was at my apartment when it arrived.  I didn't bother to open it, because I saw what they were going for on eBay.  I was disappointed to sell it, but 100%+ profit was too much to pass up, with the wedding/honeymoon/new home coming up quickly.

Christmas morning, she had a 360 for me under the tree.  (Of course it was the "core" version, but hard drives were easy to find compared to the actual consoles).  I'm sure she regrets it as I spent *way* too much time on it prior to having kids, but next to my PC, it's gotten more play than any other console/home computer I've ever owned.

The only other consoles I got at launch were the Dreamcast and the Gamecube.  No particularly interesting stories about those two.

I'm disappointed that the PS4 doesn't seem to support MP3s or media servers. Especially the latter is an important part of my living room experience. It's not a worse problem for me than to just boot up my PS3 instead when I need to use a media server, but with the improved CPU and network support, I was hoping that it would work.

Yeah, that's a big no go for me.  No DLNA == no sale.  Hopefully it's just an oversight.

plus some of the $60 games that were decent but not quite AAA may have sold more during the initial release period had they been $40.

I'd argue that that already happens, especially around this time of year.  Amazon and other retailers will drop prices pretty quickly on new games that aren't selling particularly well.  Whether that's a more successful strategy than coming out the gate at $50 or $40, I dunno.
