41  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Re: Amazon Marketplace - Anyone Been a Seller? on: March 12, 2014, 01:33:07 AM
I've sold probably 200+ items on amazon marketplace over the past 5 years.  Overall it's been a positive experience... The only qualm I have is amazons very liberal return policy.  Buyers can return anything for any reason, and the seller doesn't have much, if any, recourse if the buyer decided to press the issue .
42  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [xbox 360]Games with Gold on: March 10, 2014, 09:06:26 PM
I don't see a way for MS to offer something similar to Sony's instant library, without making it contingent on maintaining an active subscription.

There's tens of millions of Xbox 360 owners who don't have Gold subscriptions, and lots of 48 hour codes floating around out there.  If MS *were* to do the insane thing and offer a dozen (or even a few) free recent-ish games that don't require an active subscription, you can imagine what would happen.

I'm sure there's some sort of middle ground - they just haven't found it yet.

I've never seen a show turn on a dime like Heroes did after that first season.  The writer's strike certainly didn't help, but damn.

Hopefully they can learn from their mistakes, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I still don't get all the Bioshock Infinite hate, most of which I've heard from press. It was my GOTY last year and I couldn't stop playing it once I started, and pondered the ending for days after I completed it.

I certainly didn't hate Infinite; I enjoyed it and played it to completion. I think the problem was unrealistic expectations from the audience.  The original Bioshock was one of those games where everything just clicked, and the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.  Infinite's "parts" were all well done and polished to the nth degree, but it never transcended those parts like the original did.  And I think that's what most people were expecting; which is kind of like asking lightning to strike twice.  Even the best developers can't hit a grand slam each and every time, but Levine's track record has been stellar and most gamers expected he could simply do it again.  He came damn close, but Infinite didn't have that certain je-na-sais-I-don't-know-what that his previous Shock games had.

Did we really expect another Irrational Bioshock? Bioshock 2 wasn't even done by Irrational. Didn't think they'd want to spend another how many years designing another Bioshock universe. I thought Infinite tied up the story nicely.

Levine has said as much in the past.  I can't find the article, but the gist of it was the Bioshock games take so long to develop, and realistically he could only do a few more games of that scope in his lifetime.  Definitely sounded like didn't want to continue going down that path.

Finished this yesterday - wow.  I was a bit unsure about it at the beginning - I think I assumed it was more of an open world experience, maybe?  But I enjoyed the story and the gameplay, though at points the game-iness of it became too apparent... respawning enemies, certain paths they would never go down, ignoring the AI partners, etc.  Though it didn't detract from my enjoyment.

But man, what a bleak experience.... I did not sleep well last night.

I can't believe that Call of Duty Ghosts is nearly 40gig,WTF is up with that? doesn't look or run that much better than when i had the 360 version

And then there is Forza 5,again nearly 40gig,it makes me shudder that we are all asking for more tracks and wondering how much more space will be needed if Turn 10 do that for Forza 6

And another matter,we are what?..1 month into next gen and games are taking up 40 gig, with the Blu Ray being able to hold 50gig(That's still the case isn't it?),so sooner rather than later we could be back to 2+ discs per game, disc swapping and everything else

right?..or am i missing something?

and I am using Pin more than i did on the 360,just because i can get to stuff like Settings easier, rather than go looking for them in the apps or hope its been rotated on the Home screen

On ps4 I'm having the same thoughts. Not even two months in and I'm already only showing 242gb free...guess ill end up throwing a 1 or 2 tb drive in at some point. 1tb should have been the minimal for these drives if they require installs.

At least you can do that with the PS4,I understand you can't even use an external HDD on the One

It's coming in a system update
58  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: DISNEY buying LUCASFILM....More Star Wars coming... on: January 06, 2014, 01:03:39 PM
What was released back then were simply Laserdisc -> DVD transfers - almost the laziest possible solution.

I have read statements from film restoration experts that a proper HD transfer can be done - even despite Lucas' insistence that the originals were destroyed to make the special editions.

Personally, I think Harmy's "despecialized" editions are great, and well worth the effort to track them down - even if they're not particularly legitimate.

Don't worry about those. They were only pulled because the license finally transferred from Interplay to Bethesda in full. They should be back up in some form pretty soon, though Bethesda might save it for some kind of Fallout 4 promotion.

Bethesda has yet to put any of their games on GOG - I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them to reappear there.

Jan 27 - The Last of Us (PS3) Amazing experience, but I need to go detox on Mario or something.  That's enough dark and bleak for quite a while.

Feb 6 -  Assassins Creed: Revelations (PS3) MOTS, but I've really enjoyed Ezio's story.

Apr 1 - Bioshock Infinite: Buried at Sea Episode 2 (PC) Much better than Episode 1, but the brief trip back to Columbia made me realize how much I didn't care for that setting.  Hopefully future entries in the series will be set in Rapture.

April 21 - Fallout New Vegas: Dead Money (360)

May 1 - Fallout New Vegas: Honest Hearts (360)

May 31 - Fallout New Vegas: Old World Blues (360)

Aug 29 - Fallout New Vegas: Lonesome Road (360) While this was supposed to wrap up the Courier's story, I felt they were trying too hard to be clever, and it just became cryptic.  Never understood what exactly Ulysses deal was.  Maybe I'm just suffering from Fallout fatigue.

Sept. 9 - Fallout New Vegas (360) Whew!  106 hours, finished the main game and all DLC.  Raptr says 123 hours.  At any rate, that's the most I've put into a single game since WOW some 5 years ago.  Just in time for Wasteland 2.

Dec. 8 - Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4)

This type of North American-centric thinking seems pretty representative of the problems MS has had in the past (huge controllers and consoles in Japan) and possibly in the future with the Xbox One.

The S controller was designed specifically for the Japan launch.  I don't deny that there are examples of Microsoft being tone-deaf to other parts of the world, but that wasn't one of them.

My now-wife bought me a 360 as a Christmas present.  After these past 8 years, she won't be making that mistake again smile  At the time I was living the bachelor life for a little bit longer in a one bedroom apartment.  Now I'm in the 'burbs with a wife and two kids after years of infertility treatments and adoption rigmarole.  Still at the same employer, but my job responsibilities have changed significantly and I'm much happier career-wise than I was back then.

I was 18 months out from my cancer diagnosis in 03, and still very unsure what the future held.  Celebrated 10 years in remission this fall.

Since then I've lost my wife to cancer and dealt with raising a now-8 year old myself.  I've loved and lost and now find myself in love again with an amazing woman who shares many of my nerdy hobbies.  I didn't get a Ps3 until several years after launch and it's now a dedicated BluRay player as all my gaming takes place on the PC.

It's been a very eventful 8 years.

To say the least... holy crap man, I don't know if you've shared that here before, but if you did I missed it.  My condolences on the loss of your wife, and congrats on the new woman and being a kickass single dad.

I dunno if Atari 2600's Video Olympics was the worst game I ever played, still thinking A2600 Pac Man, but Video Olympics was by far the largest disappointment for me. And it was the first video game I chose to buy. When my parents gave in to my nagging about getting an Atari 2600 they said I could choose a single game for it. I had played a bunch of the games in Sears or what not but having a single choice I wanted to pick a game that would last. So I saw Video Olympics. The game cover was awesome as it showed a bunch of athletes playing various sport games. And in red letters the package hyped that there were 50 sport games in the cartridge!  I was like if it has 50 games in it I could play it forever! It would be totally stupid not to get this game!

Well I was pretty naive in what to expect. When I gleefully shoved the cartridge in and turned on the system staring back at me was Pong. The 50 "sports" games were just variations on Pong. To make matters worse they were only 2-player games. And on top of that you needed the paddle controllers to play which we did not have.

To be fair, Video Olympics was a 2600 launch title, so we're talking 1977 or so.  Video games in general hadn't progressed much past Pong variants yet.  But yeah, it does not hold up well at all, even compared to other 2600 games.

Bottom line is, speaking from someone that has a PS4 and have been playing it all week, Xbone is pushing the envelope.

The more I reviews I read about the Xbone, the more intrigued I am.  My current consoles do more "family media" than gaming these days... If they can work out all the kinks and have it function like I'm sure they want it to, it could be very interesting.  Considering how drastically different the 360 from 2005 is compared to today, I'm sure it will get there - eventually.

For AC, I briefly played the first one but was turned off by the Sci Fi concept.  Silly, I know, it was just my reaction.  How are the stories once get into them?  Is the out of body part a big portion of the games or just an excuse to constantly move environments/settings?  I haven't followed the series at all.  I see AC4 was released today.  Would that perhaps be a good place to start?

The first one was almost a tech demo - you can safely ignore that one.  AC2 and AC: Brotherhood are considered the best of the series by a lot of people.  Not sure how AC4 stacks up yet.

The sci-fi stuff is around the periphery, but the meat of the game is exploring the historical eras and being a general badass.

Pac-Man for the 2600 was far worse, because everyone knew what Pac-Man was supposed to be like, and it was a far cry from the arcade version.

You are 100% correct about that. Pac Man was a travesty on the 2600. I also seem to recall they priced it higher, like $60, which just added to the disappointment. Although I only played ET a bit it just seemed like a confusing game to me.

I can still clearly recall the terrible Pac Man dot munching and power pellet sounds. That's how badly memorable the whole package was.

Indeed.  The sounds were picked up by some sound sample library, and for the next 15 years, they were used on any and every TV show where a video game was being played.  That and 2600 Donkey Kong.  The video game version of the Wilhelm Scream.
As for my worst game, I'm going to go with Corridor 7 by Capstone.  A below average FPS built on the Wolf3D engine after Doom was out - bleah.

Back on AOL when chat was a thing one of the Capstone guys offered to send me Corridor 7 for free. I actually said "no thanks".  icon_razz

I was a beta tester for it - until I got kicked off the team for saying how bad it was during testing.
