121  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Looking for feedback : Video reviews on: August 24, 2013, 01:02:02 AM
I agree with wonderpug about the intro length.  I'm sure someone spent a lot of time creating it, but it's simply too long. It would be much better at 5 seconds - 10 seconds tops.  Just about every credible online video expert I've read/heard emphasized the need to get straight to the content as quickly as possible due to short attention spans.

Otherwise, they're well done.  Just don't let them replace the text reviews... I'm much more likely to read a 1000 word review than sit through a 5 minute video.
122  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: What D&D character are you? on: August 19, 2013, 10:12:06 PM
Neutral Good Human Bard/Cleric (3rd/2nd Level)

Ability Scores:
Strength- 14
Dexterity- 16
Constitution- 15
Intelligence- 15
Wisdom- 14
Charisma- 11

Neutral Good- A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them. Neutral good is the best alignment you can be because it means doing what is good without bias for or against order. However, neutral good can be a dangerous alignment when it advances mediocrity by limiting the actions of the truly capable.

Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.

Primary Class:
Bards- Bards often serve as negotiators, messengers, scouts, and spies. They love to accompany heroes (and villains) to witness heroic (or villainous) deeds firsthand, since a bard who can tell a story from personal experience earns renown among his fellows. A bard casts arcane spells without any advance preparation, much like a sorcerer. Bards also share some specialized skills with rogues, and their knowledge of item lore is nearly unmatched. A high Charisma score allows a bard to cast high-level spells.

Secondary Class:
Clerics- Clerics act as intermediaries between the earthly and the divine (or infernal) worlds. A good cleric helps those in need, while an evil cleric seeks to spread his patron's vision of evil across the world. All clerics can heal wounds and bring people back from the brink of death, and powerful clerics can even raise the dead. Likewise, all clerics have authority over undead creatures, and they can turn away or even destroy these creatures. Clerics are trained in the use of simple weapons, and can use all forms of armor and shields without penalty, since armor does not interfere with the casting of divine spells. In addition to his normal complement of spells, every cleric chooses to focus on two of his deity's domains. These domains grants the cleric special powers, and give him access to spells that he might otherwise never learn. A cleric's Wisdom score should be high, since this determines the maximum spell level that he can cast.

I've owned all of them, finished 1, 3, and 4.

I remember the sales dude at Babbages rolling his eyes when I was there before the store opened the day WC3 came out.  Of course, my 486 at the time was woefully inadequate for the task, so I had to wait until I got a Pentium to actually play it at a decent framerate.

Ultima 5 was my introduction to the series and RPGs as a genre - I made significant progress, but never finished it.

I've beaten 1, 6, 7, and Underworld.  In addition to 5, I've gotten close to finishing Serpent Isle, 8 and 9.  Dabbled with the rest (including Escape from Mt. Drash)

Edit:  following Usenet discussions leading up to the release of Ultima 9 is how I ended up at Gone Gold, and eventually here.

My current ride has a single cd in the dash, and a factory installed cd changer in the back.  Haven't used either more than a handful of times - in fact I don't think either works anymore. I've used iPhone -> aux in jack for music since the day I got the car.

My MIL has a 2007 car with a tape deck, believe it or not.

I just started wearing a watch again a few months ago. I have one watch that I save for special occasions where I need to dress up. I have another watch for more normal occasions.

Needless to say, knowing the time has very little to do with why I like wearing a watch. It's an accessory for me, which is incredibly odd because I usually don't care much about fashion. Example A: I'm currently at work wearing jeans with a hole in the crotch.

I haven't worn a watch since the 90s, but lately I have been trying to punch up my style, and having a nice watch is part of my plan.  Haven't bought one yet, but hopefully soon.

We did ours through Legalzoom - probably not as good as going through a lawyer face to face, but our will isn't complicated.  It basically states who will take over our children's guardianship if we were to both die and what happens to the assets (trusts, who controls them, at what age the children have full access, etc).

Though it needs to be updated since the addition of child #2 last year.

5. The 2 new games per month for Gold membership lie/misdirect. They clearly marketed this to detract from Sony's deal. See, PS+ members have been getting a really great list of high-profile titles for free ($50/year) for over a year now as well as access to a lot of neat features. The one-game per month thing just keeps happening and sometimes it's more. The fact that Microsoft announced that and hid the fact that it ends this December brings to mind the thinly veiled deceit that a company like EA would pull to justify doing something wrong.

Wait... they didn't hide anything unless I'm misunderstanding the complaint.  It was known on the same day they announced the free games that the promotion would be over at the end of the year.   Yeah, it's a response to the Instant Game Collection - so? People have complained about not getting their money's worth with Gold, so MS sweetens the pot.  I fail to see the problem.  As long as your rights to play the games don't disappear come Dec 31, that's fine.

And I disagree with Sony's "really great list of high profile titles for free" - the IGC is quite a value, no doubt.   But the list of games the US has gotten is average at best, with only a handful of "high profile titles" sprinkled in as the next gen battle for hearts and minds heats up.  Yeah UC3 and XCom are great, but there were months and months of tripe like Bloodrayne Betrayal, Knytt, Frogger Returns, etc. with very few AAA titles.  I'm not complaining - free is free (well, $50/year), but let's not exaggerate the overall quality of the titles included.
No, not every game is a blockbuster but if you get two games per month then at least one of them is a AAA game.  For example, I've had PS+ for just over a year and this is what I have in my gaming backlog thanks to PS+:

Deus Ex
Sleeping Dogs
Demon's Souls
The Cave
Resident Evil 5
Little Big Planet
Rachet and Clank All 4 one
Saints Row 2
Space Marine
Infamous 2
Magic 2012
Lara Croft Guardian of Light
Virtua Fighter 5?

And then this month there's UC3, Xcom and Little Big Planet Karting
Plus there are a few games that I have gotten but havent downloaded to my PS3
And then finally there's all the free games (about 10 so far?) That I've gotten for my PS Vita.

Yes there is a little chaff-but I would say it's 30% at most.

They came out of the gate strong, and as I mentioned they ramped it up again leading up to E3.  But there were several months of jack and shit between the two.  And seeing the EU get stronger titles on average, and sooner than their US counterpart, just rubbed salt in the wound.

Bullwinkle just hit on something and it came on like a light bulb.

The last generation launch had a bunch of fanbois insulting each other, fighting tooth and nail, being completely irrational just to defend their chosen system, etc.

This time around it's almost universal disdain for Microsoft.   Even the people planning to still purchase the Xbone are doing so in a passive way (ie saying "I understand why you guys are buying the PS4, but I'm sticking with Microsoft").

This can't be a good sign for Xbone.
I dunno... between the $599 price tag, the giant enemy crabs, "RIIIIDGE RACER" and the boomerang controller, Sony pretty much stunk the place up and had a similar reaction from gamers at the PS3 reveal.  It just wasn't as amplified back then - we're far more connected now with social media and whatnot.

The amount of negativity and vitriol in these new console threads is so discouraging and off putting.  One fact that all the expert Gamestop genius employees that get quoted all the time seem to miss in the PS4 vs XB1 Pre-order war is that what I buy won't cost anyone else a red cent.  That's right whatever I choose will incur no cost or obligation to others, so why try to make a big issue about which one is best when we won't see either one for 5 months at least?

I guess it is fortunate that consoles only get updated every 7 years, this is ridiculous to follow.  Gaming Trend doesn't seem to have a younger audience so I will assume that the users here can be relied upon to make their own decisions in regards to their own monies and desires.  I see no need to descend into mudslinging just because you don't like someone elses choices.

The internets love a good pile-on.

The comparison picture also makes me shake my head in disapointment at MS not even trying with their console design for the Xbox one.  I'm looking forward to reading the industry development post-mortem on the Xbox One whenever that comes out.  That can't have been their concept design.  They have very talented people working for them, and that's the best they could do?  I find that really hard to believe.  I'm thinking they ran up against a time contraint and just said "F**k it, put it in a rectangular box, we don't have enough design/production time anymore.  Some people will like the minimalist, blu-ray player look."

I'm not planning on buying the Xbone anytime soon, but the design I like.  I prefer consoles that don't look out of place with the rest of my A/V equipment.
