1  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: System Shock remake Kickstarter (and demo!) [PC/XB1] on: June 29, 2016, 04:37:45 PM
The demo is a bit wonky, but that's not surprising this early in the game. Looks great so far.

Backed for $25.

Looks great.  I hope it can maintain the atmosphere without the annoyance I remember of weapons breaking so quickly.

I think that was System Shock 2; the first one didn't have any weapon degradation, IIRC.
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS2 emulation on the PS4 is an exciting prospect on: December 05, 2015, 01:48:45 PM
$15 a pop, won't allow me to use my PS2 discs or honor my existing PS3 purchases.  Thanks, but no thanks, Sony.
3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (11/10) on: November 11, 2015, 10:08:04 PM
Fallout 4 - once all the DLC is out and most of the bugs are squashed.
4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: So are the Steam forums always filled with so many immature people? on: October 31, 2015, 01:00:00 PM
Yep, pretty much.  I've been somewhat active on the Steam Link forum recently (I've had a very good experience with the device, but it can be twitchy). It is breathtaking how many people argue the same brain-dead points over and over and over again, even after they've been exhaustively answered.
5  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Best place to get an iPad Air (not 2)? on: October 28, 2015, 01:14:03 PM

Bought my wife's (used) MacBook Air there some years ago, it's still going strong.
6  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Time to research home theater speakers? on: October 19, 2015, 12:36:02 PM
I left my12 year old Energy Take 5 speakers behind when we sold our house last year; ended up getting an updated version of the Take 5 (Energy 5.1 Take Classic Home Theater System).  Excellent sound, and you can't beat the price at $349.  You're not going to rattle the neighbor's home with these, but I'm rarely in a position to crank up the volume up anyway.
7  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Battlefront 3 finally announced! on: October 07, 2015, 01:52:13 AM
So what's the deal with the public beta?  Do you need to sign up somewhere or will it be available on the console stores/Origin?
8  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Star Citizen, space combat simulation game (Chris Roberts' latest) on: October 01, 2015, 09:13:15 PM
If it were anyone other than DS leading the charge against Star Citizen, I might be inclined to put weight behind the claims.  But yeah... Derek Smart.  And hooray for internet drama.
9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (8/25) on: August 24, 2015, 01:33:49 PM
I've got Dishonored on pre-order; loved the base game, but never got around to the DLC.

TWD exists in some parallel universe where John Romero never made a movie, the word "zombie" is never uttered, and the very concept of reanimated dead seems to be completely novel. Nobody ever says "Holy shitsnacks, zombies!" because they lack any frame of reference. Apparently that gives the outbreak more time to spread than if they were arguing about which zombie lore is pertinent.

That always bugs me; how zombie shows/games actively avoid the word "zombie."

Cripes.  I think my points have sort of stagnated just shy of the 30k mark.

Same here... I got to 20k within a couple of years of the 360 launch, but I'm just now approaching 28k.
12  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: Fallout Shelter on: July 01, 2015, 07:26:38 PM
Hopefully Bethesda will continue to build it out; I've spent a lot of time with it over the past week, but now my vault is more or less self-sustaining and there's nothing left to do.
13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Playstation Plus - Now with lots more free games! on: July 01, 2015, 07:23:38 PM
Meh; only title I'm interested in is GW3 - hopefully it'll be a cross buy title as I no longer have a Vita.

Particularly disappointed since Japan gets Guilty Gear and Arkham Origins.
14  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Amazon Echo on: June 19, 2015, 02:43:52 AM
I got one for my technophobic mom, and she loves it.  Doesn't use it for anything other than listening to Amazon Prime music - at least not yet.
15  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Games Finished 2015 Edition on: April 16, 2015, 03:28:42 PM
April 16 - Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare [PS4]

Best CoD campaign in a while

July 20 - Destiny (campaign) [PS4]

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Lowered expectations from early reviews probably helped.

:sigh: my saves are on PC. This series stays there for that reason alone.

I've got a bajillion hours in it. Not retreading. Got enough to play on my console.

You could transfer BL1 saves between pc and PS3 via third party utilities.  No idea about other platforms/games, but I wouldn't be surprised if you could.
18  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: New Year's Eve: How as your 2014? on: January 04, 2015, 11:01:05 PM
I'm ready for 2015; 2014 was way too stressful for my liking.

- Bought a new house that's significantly larger and on the "right" (read: snobby) side of town.
- Knocked it up a couple of notches at work, dramatically raised my standing among coworkers.
- Got my biggest raise to date at the end of the year.
- Played more paying gigs this year than any previous year, got some nice complements from semi/formerly- famous musicians.
- (TMI warning) Sex life with the wife is back to pre-kids level.  It was pretty abysmal there for a while.
- Another decent year health-wise. 11.5 years in remission from cancer, minor heart scare in November proved to be nothing.

- The home selling & buying process was incredibly stressful due to idiots on both sides of the equation, didn't get nearly as much as we should have for our previous house.
- Wife dealt with crippling depression throughout a large chunk of the year.
- Due to all the various stresses and a rotator cuff injury, I'm at my heaviest since 2007. Nothing I can't shed before summer, but still frustrating.
- Found out my mom has cancer.  It's something that should be able to be held at bay indefinitely, but she'll never be rid of it.

My goals for 2015 are to find a better job and see my wife get the help she needs for her depression.

120gb SSD is going to get cramped pretty quickly; considering how much prices have fallen this year, I'd at least go for something in the 240-256 range.
20  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: upgrade xbox 360 game to xbox one on: December 26, 2014, 05:00:16 PM
Unless explicitly stated by the publisher (and that is very rare), you need to buy the One version, even if you have the 360 version.

I think activision announced a trade up program for advanced warfare, but I can't find the article at the moment

23  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: It's Almost Thanksgiving (USA! USA!), What's your GOTY? on: November 30, 2014, 03:28:23 AM
I'm still mainly working on titles from a couple of years ago, but I did pick up Wolfenstein last week and it's my front-runner.  So far, a great throwback shooter with enough modern touches. More serious than I would expect from a Wolfenstein title, but not without it's moments of levity:

BJ at the Nazi space center, examining a display case.

"So, they put a Nazi on the moon.
Fuck you moon."

The mini blades on the hilt just look like a really good way to accidentally slice your own arm off.  Though I suppose it's a decent enough way to jazz up a lightsaber at this point.

The shots of X-Wings and the Falcon flying around close to the ground were cool but I hope there's actually, y'know, battles in space. Seeing as it's called "Star Wars" and all. But I realize we're only seeing a very small glimpse of the final product.
25  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: How do you use your tablet on: November 15, 2014, 03:44:37 PM
I use it for testing mobile app builds for work.  That's about it - between my 5s and laptop, I really have no day-to-day use for a tablet.
26  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Destiny -Bungie's new game with Activision on: September 05, 2014, 10:10:42 PM
Wow... I've been avoiding the hype train because I still don't own a new console and didn't want to get the prev gen version.  But now I'll probably get it sooner rather than later.
27  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Do you buy DVDs anymore? on: August 21, 2014, 04:17:28 PM
I don't buy individual titles anymore, but I'll still spring for inexpensive blu-ray collections... Got all of the x-men/wolverine movies (excluding DoFP) for $30 not too long ago.
28  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: How rough is your family on their phones? on: August 11, 2014, 05:23:29 PM
My wife isn't rough on her phones/electronics, but she is careless.  I've lost count of the number of times I've seen her open laptop perched precariously on the arm of the couch, unattended.  Practically daring the two year old to run by and knock it to the ground.
29  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Hypochondriac on: August 09, 2014, 08:55:32 AM
I've dealt with it for 15 odd years.  After my dad died of cancer at a young age, I started freaking out over getting it myself, imagining symptoms I didn't actually have. What really messed with my head was when I actually did get cancer in '03.  So now I have to deal with sorting out the real feelings from the fake ones... usually if I'm under a great deal of stress, it's a safe bet that it's just the hypochondria acting up, and not an actual physical problem (though it certainly feels real at the time).

Have you thought about seeing a psychiatrist or counselor?  Hypochondria is usually tied to some sort of anxiety/panic disorder.  I was on SSRIs (Zoloft/Paxil/etc) for a while to help deal with it, but personally I wouldn't go that route again.  Some sort of cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) would probably be more helpful.

Chalk me up as another unfamiliar with the original.  While I've been aware of "Happy"'s existence for a while, I hadn't actually heard it until I clicked on Farley2k's link.
32  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Problem... on: July 17, 2014, 01:00:12 PM
I have had decent experiences with "fulfilled by amazon" - with one exception... Received a 360 game that had apparently been submerged in a vat of goo gone, then shrinkwrapped while still wet.  Disgusting.

Such a bizarre turn of events.  After nearly 20 years of estrangement between him and McMahon, they make nice in time for him to be inducted into the HoF, make peace with other wrestlers he had heat with, give a speech on RAW about his own mortality, then keels over the next day.

He must've known something was up - when he made his entrance on RAW, he was barely able to do his trademark shaking of the ring ropes, which any moderately healthy person should be able to do effortlessly.

I enjoyed part 2 far more than part 1 (which I did not like at all....), and thought it was interesting how they tied the events from Bioshock and Infinite together.  At the same time, it made me realize how much I did not like Infinite's setting.
