362  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Madden 2008 and Blockbuster on: August 15, 2007, 01:46:40 AM
Used my coupon to grab the Wii version. I had to go to two Blockbusters though. Both clerks seemed amazed that someone wanted to purchase a video game there.  icon_biggrin I was going to sit this year out on Madden but 39.99 was too good to pass up.
363  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Persona 3 Thread of Yumyum Deliciousness (shipping delay NOOOOO) on: August 14, 2007, 02:43:40 AM
I can't wait to get this. It makes me regret that I ordered from Amazon to save a couple of bucks. Hopefully, they will ship my copy pretty soon.

Persona 3 for sure. Maybe D &D tactics.

I doubt if this makes anything much safer. I'm sure the Chinese Government turned a blind eye to this for years. Now that there is international pressure on them, they parade out a few scapegoats. This is a problem that will take decades to fix properly.
366  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Babylon 5 for $19.99 a season! on: August 13, 2007, 01:23:35 AM
The first season is a bit rough but no worse than the first season of Star Trek The Next Generation. It really takes off after that. It is my favorite Science Fiction series of all time. Really good stuff. I payed full price for all the seasons and I don't regret it a bit.

They don't have enough of a naval force to protect it from being destroyed, so it's kind of putting the cart before the horse.

I think this is the reason. Spending tons of cash on an item that any country with a decent navy could sink easily doesn't make much sense.  Plus, if they are going to war anytime soon it will be with Russia or Taiwan. You don't need a carrier to go to war with Russia. It will be a land war. I'm not sure a carrier would do much good in a conflict with Taiwan either. If we decide to throw in with the Taiwanese, we sink the carrier the first day of the war and its wasted.  I cant see a carrier doing them much good except for propaganda.

Well let's be candid here.  There is a very short list of major naval powers, and the US is at the top of that list.  Now granted the US is now a non-issue to them at the moment, since almost everything is around the Persian Gulf.  But they don't have a way to capitalize on that (from a naval perspective).

What should be a greater concern (to us, anyway) is whether China finally decides to "reunite" with Taiwan.  Honestly, I'm kind of shocked it hasn't happened already, but then again China is likely happy to let the US bleed itself in Iraq.  If your opponent wants to hang himself, sell him as much rope as he wants, right?  Ah... the multitude of ways this Iraq debacle is fucking over not just American interests, but world peace on the whole, are almost overwhelming to contemplate.

Given the global rearrangement of the board, things are looking pretty bad for Taiwan.  I think when it happens, it's going to be primarily for economic reasons.  Chinese economic reasons, specifically, and them deciding that the Chinese economy would look really good with Taiwan as a part of it... and that there would be nothing anyone could do about it.  And really... you don't need an aircraft carrier for any of that, just really good planning.

Another issue is the same military scenario which has played out for centuries: if China or Russia get attacked, they can just retreat and burn everything behind them.  It's also so much ground to cover, an invasion is just too logistically impossible to manage.  China is no stranger to the principles of guerrilla warfare (after all, that's why China is communist rather than a democracy).  If a large army landed to invade (or occupy), it would only be a matter of time before they lose.  Not that anyone would be willing or able to do anything about it.

But all that's a side issue.  China doesn't really need a huge navy right now, because most of their concern is on the ground.  And if it hasn't already happened, satellite based weaponry.

Actually, I still believe no matter what the deployment in the Persian Gulf is at the moment, we still have an adequate naval assets to deal with the Chinese Navy. Its the ground forces that are most stretched to let limit. If we made up our mind to defend Taiwan, we could still blockade the island with available carrier groups. The real problem would problem would be a land based war such as a North Korean invasion of the south. I doubt we have the boots to put on the ground there. We could still tear them apart with are carrier groups air wings though.

I agree though that if Taiwan is to merge with China, it will be due to economic reasons. I used to think it would be for the benefit of China but with their economic growth it may be the reverse. It could be that when it gives an economic advantage to the Taiwanese, they will be ready to become part of the motherland again.

I believe that if China and Russia come to blows it will be due to the need to control energy resources. There are some pretty rich natural resources in the area  that are controlled by Russia and  very few people living in it. China could use the space for its growing population and the resources to feed a growing need.  In the late 60's and early 70's the Chinese fought some heated boarder skirmishes with the USSR. I don't think the borders situation was officially resolved until the early 90's. Still I doubt this is likely in the near future. China just has too much to lose to start a conflict. Right now they are still trying to be more of a regional super power and grow their economy. A war of attrition with Russia or a war with the US, a huge market for their goods, just doesn't make sense.  Just my two cents though. Of course that all goes out the window, when their Gundam tech comes on line  icon_biggrin

I think I'll be in the same boat.  Blu Ray seems to be dominating my collection due in no small part to the 1080p of the PS3 and the 720p of my on-again-off-again 360.

Blu Ray for me because of the above stated reason. I am giving HD a go with Shaun of the Dead though.

One little touch that I find just amazing is the load scene stuff.  When you're loading the start of the level, the main character talks about a memory of the place or about something that just happened or is about to.  But when your just loading the game, he's there with his guns doing all kinds of things-staring at them, spinning them, posing with them stacked artistically on the ground, all while the camera cuts around in full 3D.  I haven't run across a repeat yet.  It's totally unnecessary, but it's just another example of the lengths Starbreeze will go to in giving you a great experience.

I was pretty impressed with this as well. I've played about 2 hours so far and I'm really enjoying it. Lots of attention to details.  The combat is fun and not too easy. I'd give it an 8/10 so far. Well worth the $50.00 I paid at circuit city.

I got my wheel from Wal-Mart for $119.00 yesterday and um....yeah it is going to take some getting use to.  I tried it out for an hour yesterday and it just seemed very loose to me and over sensitive with vibrations that did not make me feel like I was in a sim. what so ever . After I discovered the PGR3 game label said install first for drivers, I figured that is what I was missing...same shit nothing changed. my regular controller was looking like a champ. Then I discovered what I taught was the USB plug to use as wired was an actual AC power cord. Oh great I don't have to use batteries plugged it in and Whoooooooo, holy force feedback. This shit is awesome I actually felt like I was driving and can feel the road. I did not have much driving time since I discovered the error of my ways but I will have to try it out again tonight. Oh I need to find a better sitting position to be comfortable with the pedals. How is those gaming chairs?

I did the same exact thing. I was pissed for about the first hour I had the wheel. Then I figured out you had to plug it in to get the force feedback. Im glad I'm not the only one to do that.  icon_lol

You are correct. Hitler was elected in a free election. However, I can't quite bring myself to think George Bush is going to refuse to leave office in 2008.  I can't believe any rational person would believe that either. It is two different moments in time. Hitler enjoyed overwhelming public support. I think we can all agree Bush doesnt have that.  icon_biggrin  Germany was in economic ruin and Hitler was viewed as the savior of the nation. Can you see a majority of Americans thing Bush could save anything at this point?

I'd rather have our troops home, but not at the cost of another NeoConNazi running the country for another 4 years.  So much damage has been done in my 3 main areas (personal liberty, fiscal responsibility, enviromental) that it'll take 10 years (if ever) to undo the damage Bush has done.  So I'm willing to wait, even at the cost of lives, if that's what it takes to guarantee another NeoConNazi can't get elected to the White House.  That may be a cold sentiment, but I'm a pragmatist.

Yeah... I guess I have to agree with you.

BTW... interesting article on FOX news website.  It actually acknowledged that Prescott Bush financed Hitler and the Nazi party.  This is nothing new, of course, since anyone halfway well informed already knew this, but to see it show up on FOX... that's pretty amazing.

Personally, I think Nazi is a good fit.  Prior to Hitler coming to power in Germany, there were people running around saying their president is essentially a dictator, with no obligation to follow any laws.  I can't remember where I've been hearing that... it sounds pretty familiar...

Except a peaceful transfer of power doesn't usually happen with a dictator. We will have that here. Not soon enough for some but we will have it. I'm not a Bush supporter and I'll be glad to see him gone but Nazi is stretch.
385  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Do you think the Democrats are cowards? on: May 25, 2007, 05:38:03 PM
To answer the original question, Yes the democrats are cowards but so are the republicans. All in all I dont see much difference in either party. Both sides have one concern that takes precedence over doing the right thing and that is staying in office. Most would sell out their mothers to get elected again. It is actually pretty sad. I would love to see a viable third party but it doesnt look like that will happen.

388  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Case Closed: Illegal Immigration Is a Threat to Homeland Security on: May 13, 2007, 06:31:19 PM
While I agree that border security needs to be better, a fence doesnt seem the best way to do this. The number of border patrol agents that would be required would be insane and people would still get in. I'm more for a better system of granting work visas for people who want to come to the US and work. Streamline the process and make it easier.  After this is done, deport anyone who doesnt go through the process and gets caught.  Of course if we fined the hell out of US companies who were employing illegals, that would probably solve the problem too. Everyone is too scared of the effect on the economy to actually do that though.

They'll occasionally go through some dry spells, but there's usually at least 1-2 new games I week that end up playing.

Just curious. Where did you get a $40.00 1 year subscription. For that price, I think I would try it out. Heck that is less than the cost of one new game.
