322  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Eye of Judgment out Oct 24 - card-based game (think Magic) for the PS3 on: November 03, 2007, 04:55:04 AM
I finally found a copy of this at Best Buy tonight.  My son and I then went over to Gamestop and bought a couple of theme decks and a few boosters. I played 4 games with the starter deck against the AI. I lost 2 and won 2. All I can say is what a great game. My son and I had a blast. We will probably try a game against each other tomorrow now that we have a basic understanding of the rules.  Another few games and I may be ready to jump online.
323  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (10/29) on: October 30, 2007, 02:02:40 AM
Manhunt 2 if it gets decent reviews.  Hellgate when it drops in price probably.  With COD4, Mass Effect and Mario Galaxies on the horizon. I should save some money. If I ever see a copy of Eye of Judgement, I'll have to pick that up though. My Amazon order isnt scheduled to arrive until December.  icon_frown

No copies around here for me. I went to two gamestops. They only got one per store.  My best buy said they were supposed to get 4 but none arrived as scheduled. Also, no luck at Target, Wal-mart,Kmart, Circuit City or Miejers. I ended up ordering from Amazon. My son is wanting to play this pretty bad as well. I should have ordered another deck. Guess I'll hit some stores next week for boosters.  Keep the impressions coming.  icon_biggrin

Damn, I've spent way too much money this month already but this may be too good to pass up.  Maybe I can hold out long enough to convince myself that I don't want to get sucked into another collectible type game. I know I will weaken though as I see impressions posted.

I ordered one of these from Buy.com for a christmas or birthday present for my son. After using the $10.00 google checkout coupon, it made it  a great deal at $89 shipped.
327  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 owners only please [BC question] on: October 07, 2007, 04:41:16 PM
I've played Persona 3, God of War II, Final Fantasy 12, Digital Devil Saga 1,  and several others. I've probably spent more time on PS 2 games than PS3 games. I think it was worth buying one before the price drops just to get the BC option.

I've never liked the Flood.  They always seem like an ammo suck to me.  I was actually not minding them in this game until Level 8.  I can't tell you how much ammo I wasted before I decided to just run for it.  The Flood seemed to continuously regenerate.  There was no end.  Also, those spikey bastards on the walls were a royal pain in the ass.  If you didn't have the right kind of weapon, forget it.  Blowing up the ship was a lot of hopping around.  Then when I got to the new Halo and had to climb the tower, I was still in run-it mode, not realizing that I had to switch gears back to slow and methodical.  The Flood went back to being as annoying as ever.

Gotta agree with you there. I found myself just wanting to get through level 8. Luckily, I thought the last bits made up for it. I enjoyed every part of the game except level 8. Running through a level just wasnt that much fun for me.

I remember sneaking into Mom's closet and finding christmas presents. I unwrapped one and it was ET. I played it and wrapped it back up while my parents were out of the house. I didn't tell Mom that for at least 15 years after the fact. I felt too guilty about it.  icon_biggrin

Well, my wife and I just loaded it up on our 16:9 screen. The lobby and everything is 16:9, but when we start a co-op game it goes to a 4:3 image, split-screen, so a large chunk of the screen isn't used. If this is how they implemented same-screen multiplayer, I'm going to be furious. I can't find any options to change it either.

Quote from: malichai11 of Octopus Overlords
With 4 players it uses the full screen. With 2 players it uses a 4:3 window only. With 3 players it uses the full screen for the bottom half where 2 players play, but the top half of the screen has the image centered, but uses only the width of a 4:3 image.

I'm not pleased.

Can anyone here verify if this is in fact true, or if there is a settings issue that needs to be corrected?  I'd really hate to see my MP experience with my wife to be marred or rendered completely unplayable by such a poor design flaw.

Well, I tried to play some co-op with my son last night and that appears to be what happens. It pretty much ruined the experience for us. Maybe me will get used to it but after playing on a widescreen tv for so long it is kind of difficult to do.  I couldn't find a setting to change this. If anyone does, I'd love to hear about it.

How is that a disappointment?  All they are trying to is preserve the aspect ratio.  It's actually better than halo2 or gears in hd on the 360 where it would split the screen down the middle vertically.  In that case you had no peripheral vision, and you couldn't see anything despite the fact you have a 16:9 screen.  I'll gladly let some of the screen not be used to have the view that I'd have on single player.

Personal preference I suppose.  I prefer Gears of War and even Resistance to how it is handled in Halo 3.  It just seems a little jarring to have the screen size cut down so much after playing the single player campaign. Like I said maybe I'll get used to it. I agree that you lose some peripheral vision in other games with co-op but in Halo the screen feels squashed and for myself it was difficult to play. My son felt the same way.

Love the game - the Zones mode is my favorite.  I like how you get bonus points for things you do, like protecting a base (finally!  Us people that protect the flag on CTF games get some added points for once!), killing X amount of enemies & X amount of land vehicles in a Warhawk, etc.

But that takes me to something that I'm really NOT liking - the lag or lack of stats being recorded.  The last two days I've played around 30 if not more games.  Yet, it says that the last time I've been online playing was Sep 1 and it hasn't recorded any of my games since.  You could give the argument of, "Well, it's only a game..." but with a game like Warhawk, it's (at least for me) pretty essential that my stats are accurately reflected.

So anyway, aside from being super pissed about some KILLER games not being recorded, I'm really enjoying Warhawk.

I'm having the same stat problem. I've played a bunch the last two days with no update. None of my ribbons or badges show up either. Also, its a real pain to try and get on a ranked server. Just not enough of them I suppose.

I enjoyed Resistance: Fall of Man  and Motorstorm was pretty good as well.  The F1 game was good if you are in to that type of racing. I wouldnt recommend it to a non F1 fan though. MLB 07 is  good if your into baseball.  If your not opposed to buying another PS2 game, I say pick up Persona 3 before it gets hard to find. Its a great game and is taking up my time on the PS3 more than my actual PS3 games.

I just picked it up at Best Buy and pricematched the CC price.  I get tired of dealing with CC's videogame section (even if by some mircale it's on the floor on release day then it's always locked up in a cabinet necessitating wandering around the store to find a redshirt who can get it out of the cabinet for me).  Plus with BB I can get it added to my Reward Zone points.

+1

I went to circuit city after work because it was closer to my job. Of course, they have none on the shelf. I ask random redshirt number one if they have the game. He looks at the shelf and tells me they don't have any. Im sure they were in the back so I went to the service desk and wait for about 10 minutes. Nobody shows up so I leave and grab a copy of the ad on my way out. I went to Best Buy and price matched it.  I don't know why I waste my time with CC. I'm always disappointed with them.

They don't have enough of a naval force to protect it from being destroyed, so it's kind of putting the cart before the horse.

I think this is the reason. Spending tons of cash on an item that any country with a decent navy could sink easily doesn't make much sense.  Plus, if they are going to war anytime soon it will be with Russia or Taiwan. You don't need a carrier to go to war with Russia. It will be a land war. I'm not sure a carrier would do much good in a conflict with Taiwan either. If we decide to throw in with the Taiwanese, we sink the carrier the first day of the war and its wasted.  I cant see a carrier doing them much good except for propaganda.

Well let's be candid here.  There is a very short list of major naval powers, and the US is at the top of that list.  Now granted the US is now a non-issue to them at the moment, since almost everything is around the Persian Gulf.  But they don't have a way to capitalize on that (from a naval perspective).

What should be a greater concern (to us, anyway) is whether China finally decides to "reunite" with Taiwan.  Honestly, I'm kind of shocked it hasn't happened already, but then again China is likely happy to let the US bleed itself in Iraq.  If your opponent wants to hang himself, sell him as much rope as he wants, right?  Ah... the multitude of ways this Iraq debacle is fucking over not just American interests, but world peace on the whole, are almost overwhelming to contemplate.

Given the global rearrangement of the board, things are looking pretty bad for Taiwan.  I think when it happens, it's going to be primarily for economic reasons.  Chinese economic reasons, specifically, and them deciding that the Chinese economy would look really good with Taiwan as a part of it... and that there would be nothing anyone could do about it.  And really... you don't need an aircraft carrier for any of that, just really good planning.

Another issue is the same military scenario which has played out for centuries: if China or Russia get attacked, they can just retreat and burn everything behind them.  It's also so much ground to cover, an invasion is just too logistically impossible to manage.  China is no stranger to the principles of guerrilla warfare (after all, that's why China is communist rather than a democracy).  If a large army landed to invade (or occupy), it would only be a matter of time before they lose.  Not that anyone would be willing or able to do anything about it.

But all that's a side issue.  China doesn't really need a huge navy right now, because most of their concern is on the ground.  And if it hasn't already happened, satellite based weaponry.

Actually, I still believe no matter what the deployment in the Persian Gulf is at the moment, we still have an adequate naval assets to deal with the Chinese Navy. Its the ground forces that are most stretched to let limit. If we made up our mind to defend Taiwan, we could still blockade the island with available carrier groups. The real problem would problem would be a land based war such as a North Korean invasion of the south. I doubt we have the boots to put on the ground there. We could still tear them apart with are carrier groups air wings though.

I agree though that if Taiwan is to merge with China, it will be due to economic reasons. I used to think it would be for the benefit of China but with their economic growth it may be the reverse. It could be that when it gives an economic advantage to the Taiwanese, they will be ready to become part of the motherland again.

I believe that if China and Russia come to blows it will be due to the need to control energy resources. There are some pretty rich natural resources in the area  that are controlled by Russia and  very few people living in it. China could use the space for its growing population and the resources to feed a growing need.  In the late 60's and early 70's the Chinese fought some heated boarder skirmishes with the USSR. I don't think the borders situation was officially resolved until the early 90's. Still I doubt this is likely in the near future. China just has too much to lose to start a conflict. Right now they are still trying to be more of a regional super power and grow their economy. A war of attrition with Russia or a war with the US, a huge market for their goods, just doesn't make sense.  Just my two cents though. Of course that all goes out the window, when their Gundam tech comes on line  icon_biggrin
