81  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Re: Amazon Marketplace - Anyone Been a Seller? on: April 25, 2014, 04:49:02 PM
I sell things here and there on Amazon.  I've only run into one issue.  The differences between Amazon and EBay is that on Amazon my item sells within hours, sometimes minutes.  On eBay it can sit forever.  Risk of doing business?

I'll be playing this on the PC, so if there any special cautions about the PC version that people come across, please post these.

Will do.  Ubi does a solid job with their PC ports.  The question will be how intrusive is the UPlay part of it.   From what I've heard it's "check once on launch" and then it goes away.  We'll see....

Wouldn't the IP that the university sees be the Cloudflare IP address(es)? Aren't they effectively reverse proxying all of the connections to the GT hosts themselves?

Yea, that's exactly right - they wouldn't see our box IP, but Cloudflare's.   They are likely blocking thousands of legitimate sources if they are blocking cloudflare....

Our review is on the front page.   smile

In short, play it like a Thief game and you'll enjoy it.  Play it like a shooter and a.) you are an idiot and b.) you aren't going to enjoy it.    Almost every negative review I read prefaced their opinion with "I'm more of a first person shooter guy" or "I've played all of the Call of Duty games" (well good for you, junior).   I also get the feeling that some of these guys didn't play past the first two levels.

Well, I have to take your word for that, but I could have sworn one of the things that was touted early in this generations development 60FPS was a big seller.

Oh it is, it is. It's just that 60 fps is hard to achieve, even on the PS4, without sacrificing something. It depends on the game type too, of course, but the general idea is that the more open and graphically advanced a game is, the less likely it is to hit 60 fps. Developers have to make a choice between framerate and graphical fidelity, particularly for multiplatform titles, and many will choose the latter.

For me the 60fps thing doesn't matter in games like this where you tend to move slowly.   Texture tearing happens in racing games where things are flying a bajillion miles an hour past your face in my experience.  (though I've seen it in titles like StarCraft II as well...)

I quit soda cold turkey.   I'm drinking about 100oz of water (large 'workout' bottle 3x a day for straight water) and then I drink the Costco flavored 0 carb waters (Talking Rain).  Takes care of the sweet tooth craving for soda, but not bad for me.  If I taste soda now it's like putting a battery on my tongue.

Ugh, 'free to play' on a feature list continues to throw up gigantic red flags for me.  Even the "but you can try it for free to see if you like it!" angle doesn't work for me, because I'd find it supremely annoying if I did like it only to run into a paywall scheme I can't stand.
A lot of free to play stuff on the PC is quite good.   League of Legends, Smite, Dota2, Warframe, and Loadout all spring to mind.
Yup, that's why I said red flags rather than an outright disqualification.  But like with Smite, I was supremely happy to be able to pay the $30 forever-hero unlock and make it so I bought the whole game rather than having to pay piecemeal as I go.

100% this.  "I recognize that I like your game, developer person.   Please allow me to purchase it and then not be bothered ever again.  Thank you!"

Lol, you are?  nifty!   You have to keep track of which gate is open and when.  For instance, to get the the Warrens (aka slums) they are only open between midnight and 6am.  After that they close the doors and you can't get there until the next day.  There are only a handful of days to finish the game, so getting there to find a closed gate is just annoying.

It writes those times on the map.

True, but in most RPGs you could get there when you get there and that'd be just fine.  Go solving side quests, level up your characters, etc.  Now we are forced to say "Well, I only have an hour so I better run and be past that gate before it closes or I can't access that area.  Oh shit, but that means I can't do this other thing till tomorrow".  It's arbitrary and that's what bugs me.

Was it the whole first mission? I am concerned if missions can be finished in 17 minutes, but don't want to watch it and be spoiled... Hopefully, if it is the whole mission they get longer...

This was clearly a player who knew the map perfectly already, and if you look at the stats at the very end of the video, you'll see that he barely got any treasures or collectibles, and there was lots of room for improvement.

The video was promising, but what I'm really wondering about is what happens when you get spotted. If you can reliably fight your way out of trouble, much of the tension disappears.

From my hands-on time with it, if you get spotted you are going to get clubbed like a baby seal.  You could probably go toe-to-toe with one peon guard, but get a Sergeant or a pair of them and you're worm food.  I completely agree though - I'm Garrett, not Master Chief.

No, it isn't turn-based.  You can assign up to 4 actions (one each to a controller button).  You then pick those actions and they use so much of a bar.  If that bar goes empty, you can switch over to another "class" which has its own bar.  It's all real time.

Blarg watched lots of videos, know the answer

And when you are 'empty' on that bar it makes this obnoxious honking sound.  You'll hear it. A lot.

I'm very stoked for this one.  I am the rare person that actually really liked FFXIII and FFXIII-2 and I also enjoyed the demo for LR.  I like the switching between jobs mechanic a whole bunch and like this new combat system I played in the demo.  I knew this one wouldn't review very well and lots of people talk about how the franchise has declined, but I think the deal is that games as a medium has expanded so much and lots of people have moved past JRPGs.  Also, people hold onto the old games and how they worked and so when they try something new, it kind of upsets people.  I was okay with them taking away the exploration of typical FF games in XIII, though they did give you some more freedom about 40 hours into the game.  For me, I just like the general world of a FF game and am okay with them experimenting.  I like this 13 days until the end of the world mechanic they're putting into this one.

The end of the world stuff I liked, the damned Franklin Covey simulator of what gates are open, what vendors are present, etc. got old very fast.  I like the experimentation, but there is a point where a gameplay mechanic that is well meaning can become irritating.

FranklinCovey simulator?  As an employee of FranklinCovey, I'm officially intrigued.   smile

There's a new trailer out.

Some of it seems decent, but other things make me scoff or laugh. Mostly its the violence approach I guess. One of the things that was unique to thief was the horror of being discovered. If the guards found you, you had to be lucky to escape with your life. Here, you can just kill everyone and be done with it it seems. That takes away a great deal of the tension. Imagine Cradle level where you could just slaugther everything - fun? Not really.

That's the trailer that Ron posted yesterday.

Its new to this page of the thread though.

No, it's not.

Like many, I've been nervous about this new Thief.  At first because it was going to be some futuristic thing, then because it was supposedly more action-oriented and most recently because of reports that it was all small spaces with little choice about where to go or what to do.

I have to say that trailer would only feel more like Thief if someone called Garrett a taffer.  That doesn't mean it'll be good, of course, but I'm certainly more interested.  That said, I do hope they maintain the rich world with its steampunky feel and the various factions (Order of the Hammer and whatnot), even if it's evolved in time slightly.

I'm a Thief purist.  I'll be making sure this game is "Thiefy" enough before you have to put down your cash.
