I'm the Assistant Director of IT, and Security reports to me.   I think you can infer how I'm going to solve this problem.  "Hey, unblock me.   Thanks"

82  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / So....I'm fostering a kid for a year (maybe more?) on: July 27, 2015, 10:37:44 PM
Very long story short, a mutual childhood friend has just had a baby.  Her oldest (15 years old) has never had a positive male role model in his life.   My wife, having visited our friend for over a month, was asked if we'd be willing to foster this oldest kid for about a year.   We don't have any kids, but everyone tells us that we'd be great parents.   We decided we'd take on the challenge for at least a year.

What have I gotten myself into this time?   If any of you have any suggestions, I'm all ears.    icon_eek

I do also want to take a moment to point something out.  I'm more than happy to engage any of you at any level and on any topic.  Here's a protip on how to best engage me:  Don't start by insulting me or the site we've built.  This site is a labor of love for a lot of people, and we work very hard on it.  If you don't like the way we do it, make suggestions.  We'll listen!   If it really rubs you the wrong way, I encourage you to start your own site and see just how hard it is to reach where we are today.
84  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Waning forum usage? on: July 27, 2015, 10:30:13 PM
Sorry for the extended absense - I've transitioned jobs (finally!) and my new gig blocks GT.  frown     I'm working on fixing that (soon!) but it does make it difficult to post and keep an eye on things.

Forum usage is down for all webmasters.  As has been pointed out, sites like Neogaf and Q2Three that have built their entire coverage around their forums are still remaining strong, but folks who have turned their attention to reviews, previews, etc. have certainly seen a diverging of their traffic.  As it stands, our forum traffic is certainly down but our front page traffic is very much up.   With this transition finally complete, we are doing a bit of rejiggering in the background.   The oft-promised unification of the forums and front page are finally gaining some traction (believe me - I want it to happen more than you guys!) and moving forward.

All of that said, if you guys really want to consolidate forum boards again, I'm not against it.   I want to engage you all the way you want to be engaged, and if that helps things, then let's do it.  If it's of interest, start a thread, we'll start the debate, and we'll do whatever is decided.  After all, we are here for all of you!

Some of you might recall that my jerb was falling apart at the seams at GoDummy.  Well, two more bosses (9 in total for three years) later and I've resigned that absolutely miserable hole.   Fast forward a month and a half and shazam...I'm moving to Fort Worth.   I've accepted a position as Assistant Director of IT for the City of Fort Worth, and start on the 29th of this month!

I believe this is the most Texas picture I can find to celebrate:

90  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/XB1/ps4] The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on: May 19, 2015, 05:49:35 AM
I've put in a shade over 3 hours.   A few impressions:

- I'm playing on a 980 with everything at Ultra and the Hair Effects turned on at 1080p.  I'll be doing benchmarking in a moment.
- The game works very well with an Xbox 360 controller  (about to try kb/mouse)
- Hooooly crap I forgot how difficult the combat can be.   I've died.  A LOT.
- The world, as Ridah said, is chock full of detail.  It's amazing just how much of it, really.
- Creatures are unkind to one another.  I saw a bunch of X icons on my minimap, indicating a body.  Turns out a bunch of Neckers had wandered into a nearby wolf den and obliterated them.  Easy pickins once I got rid of the two Neckers.
- Money is scarce.  You might think "hey, I'll be nice and not charge this person for killing their monsters" but you might also find yourself unable to buy necessary items to heal, seal off monster areas, etc.
- Loading times are almost non-existent when you die or fast travel, at least thus far.  It's odd having to go to a sign post to fast travel to another sign post, but that's how it works.
- The texture detail on armor and weapons is the best I've seen in any game, ever.

I'm only a little ways in, but thus far it's pretty damned incredible.  I've already had two "Oh, that wasn't the intended outcome!" moments, and I'm just getting started!

For what it's worth, a developer claims that the PS4 version will see an improvement of 3-5 fps on average with the day 1 patch compared to what the reviewers were seeing.

A few sites confirmed that, on both the PS4 and XB1 version.  Went from an average of 29fps to 33fps, even during heavy combat.

For those on the PC, if you want to know what all of the important features look like turned on or off, or even running the game on low will look like, this video is pretty great.   Hell, if you just want to see what NVidia is doing with some of the new NVidia-specific bells and whistles look like, here ya go :

I have a final interview to be the Asst. Director of IT for the City of Ft. Worth on the 21st of this month.
I finished my second interview with Riot Games in Santa Monica this afternoon to be their Director of Operations -- it sounds like the next one will be a final and face to face.   Waiting...
I finished an interview with Comcast this week to be Sr. Director of Engineering for their HQ in Atlanta.  Waiting on an interview with the VP.

It's looking pretty good, and all of those are exciting for different reasons.  I've got my fingers crossed.  smile

Spoiler for Hiden:
I thought the point was deception is what makes us human.  All the other models could talk, walk, have sex...this was the first one that could use deception to get what she wanted...freedom.  thought it was brutal that she left him behind too...and to think if he hadn't been watching her dress he could easily have gotten out...think that says something too.

Right!  And had he

Spoiler for Hiden:
not given her the impression that he would stay in that house with her, instead of leaving and exploring the world with her, she might not have left him behind!

I agree it was a little slow, but I loved how thought provoking it was.  smile

To be fair, the last big extended cut was LOTR and The Hobbit, which were controversial already, and the movies were hellishly long enough in theaters.

There are movies cut down for theatrical release that do get better with a director's cut, Kingdom of Heaven if I recall got way better.

I don't think it'll be a completely different ending either, probably just an extended ending that does more setup for Civil War or some other future thing.
In the alternate ending, Superman accidentally drops a building on ALL the Avengers, which makes Batman very unhappy  icon_frown. But the studios wouldn't approve the DC/Marvel crossover.  icon_razz

Joss is the one who said repeatedly in interviews he wanted Ultron to be shorter than the first film (he made it by exactly one minute). So I don't know that any extended cut would really be a "Director's Cut" per se. I suspect smaller character moments and little story-sidebars are what get jettisoned when cutting this kind of blockbuster.

A couple reviews have complained that a couple action scenes just don't work well. Obviously "beauty in the eye of the beholder," but probably you could see last minute editing to reach a certain run time might botch something up.

Anyway, I'm off to the double feature Thursday, and will share poster and maybe lanyard pass (not sure there is one for this) photos that evening.  Bring your own!

Sweet!  Gimmie pictures!  biggrin

Hmm...the other thought I had when I saw this was twofold:

RAM or Heat

Were it me, I'd take Memtest ( --- use the free version) and put it on a USB stick and let it test my memory.   If those all check out ok, I'd check and see if all my fans were spinning and clean.  Heat can cause crashes just as sure as bad drivers or hardware failure.

Let us know what you find with those two things.   If you are playing Tomb Raider or TitanFall, both are pretty resource intensive and would drive memory or heat.

I'm wondering about the fate of automobiles in that time.   Self-driving cars seem to be a big push.   I'd love to reclaim that time for literally anything other than silently staring out the window concentrating on not dying.

I'm hoping that in 50 years we'll also see the death of commercial power.  While I'm not sure we'll get everyone off the grid themselves, it'd be nice to see all commercial power replaced by renewables.

The biggest thing I see dying off is small-form manufacturing.   "Oh shit, my controller cracked.  I guess I'll print another one" will be the norm.  maybe not for proprietary things like controllers, but that doesn't mean people won't figure out how to make their own.

I find it interesting that movies will do almost anything to not be rated R, but games are (thankfully) moving further into a comfortable space with being rated M.   Does the rating matter to you?  (Not just this game, but others as well?)  I know for me, I'll skip a horror movie that's rated PG-13 more often than not because it's gonna be horror-lite.
