I'm very stoked for this one.  I am the rare person that actually really liked FFXIII and FFXIII-2 and I also enjoyed the demo for LR.  I like the switching between jobs mechanic a whole bunch and like this new combat system I played in the demo.  I knew this one wouldn't review very well and lots of people talk about how the franchise has declined, but I think the deal is that games as a medium has expanded so much and lots of people have moved past JRPGs.  Also, people hold onto the old games and how they worked and so when they try something new, it kind of upsets people.  I was okay with them taking away the exploration of typical FF games in XIII, though they did give you some more freedom about 40 hours into the game.  For me, I just like the general world of a FF game and am okay with them experimenting.  I like this 13 days until the end of the world mechanic they're putting into this one.

The end of the world stuff I liked, the damned Franklin Covey simulator of what gates are open, what vendors are present, etc. got old very fast.  I like the experimentation, but there is a point where a gameplay mechanic that is well meaning can become irritating.

So Ron, without giving anything away, were you ultimately able to beat those sadistically hard boss battles? It's one thing if those fights are hard, but if they at least are beatable in a mildly realistic way then I guess it's tolerable.

I was, but man...they always felt totally unfair.  I have 2000HP versus their 400,000HP?  And I can only heal with my 6 potions, but he has a skill that allows him to get all of his HP back once?  0_0   You really feel like the cards are stacked against you, and those fights take upwards of 15-20 minutes each.   It feels a little like a combination of luck, trial and error, and some laser-precision with blocking, and even then even the most minor of slips can kill you.   One boss had an attack that did just shy of 2k worth of damage if you missed the block.  No way to beat him when you have 1400HP (the staying in one area thing I mentioned), but if you do a bunch of side quest grinding and get up to 2k HP you can live through it, once.  smile     It's just odd to go from "this is kinda challenging" in a good way to "WTF?  How was I supposed to prepare for this?!" kind of moments.

I've got a video look and a full review for you this morning:

http://www.gamingtrend.com/reviews/lightning-returns-final-fantasy-xiii-lightning-may-cry/

I tried to avoid plot spoilers at all costs, but this is an odd one.  It works on many levels and just falls flat on others.  The end result is something decent, but what has happened to this franchise?  FF used to be the reason I'd take 2-3 days off on release days...

If you look at the picture I posted up earlier, you can see that it's anything but. Both in terms of story, but also in terms of gameplay. The mere fact that the lead developer has stated that you can't have combat being as dangerous as it was in the originals shows how little they understand of the lure of the game. They also recently stated that the levels are small because they wanted the player to feel claustrophobic.... Oookay. Pretty much every Thief Level was a huge, huge area giving you tons of options and some of them pretty claustrophobic but more in terms of design, than just shrinking the levels.

After the delay they did a lot of rethinking.  They got rid of the XP system, they made combat shockingly lethal, etc.   I was with you - I was worried a little bit just before the original launch date.  I'm optimistic now - especially after that trailer.  Well done!

sadly, it seems that they just renamed XP into gold, seeing the latest screens from the game. Abilities now costs gold instead of xp.

Hence my caution.  I'm hopeful I'll have the build by next week to get a day 1 review out the door.  I'll let ya know, as a true fan of the series, what's what.

Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Batman, Resident Evil (so...many...remakes), Battlefield, Need for Speed, ALL sports titles, and I'm sure I've missed a few....

You look at these games and you have to wonder if some of these games would do better being every other year or even less frequent than that.  Hear me out.  If there was a Grand Theft Auto title every year, do you think that V would have done as well as it did?  Do you imagine you'd see as big a world with as much gameplay if GTA was forced to be shoved out the door every year?  I look at the fact that in the last 20 years of Madden it's only been twice that sales have "met expectations" and I wonder why expectations are so high (I don't have to be told anything 18 times...) and how the publisher expects the developer to iterate on Football every year.  The rules are kinda set, and you aren't going to mess with that, so what are you expecting to do other than introduce gimmicks and nonsense?  Call of Duty can iterate a story, but there are very few new 'concepts' in shooters.  What are your thoughts?

I've not had nearly the problems that we did with the Xbox 360 version on the PC.   It does feel a little like "didn't I just explore this world" though.  This is another franchise that probably doesn't need an annual installment...

We have a tempurpedic bed with a topper.  It was 5k when it was new.  It's miserably hot during the summer here in Phx, and this tempurpedic material doesn't help with that.  If you go with a tempurpedic, get one with the cooling tech in it and some cooling sheets.

On the topic of the pricing thing - we got a mattress from one of those "random mattress R Us" in a shopping mall places for our spare room.  They had a king sized 500 dollar mattress for 200 bucks, including frame.  Why?  It got rubbed against during shipping and the logo was a little roughed up.  Entirely cosmetic and covered by a sheet.

I felt like I was playing a TES game with the occasionally poorly-named NPC running by every once in a while.   I think I'm in on this one - it felt much better this go around, and it was far more stable to boot.  My biggest complaint was the interface for crafting as it's not just unintuitive but counter-intuitive.   They have time to fix that though, and hopefully some of my feedback helps.

On the subscription front, I don't bat an eye at 15 a month when there is this much content.  The Free to Play model seems to attract the absolute WORST players, and I'd rather avoid them altogether.

On the "why isn't the client free" side of things, I wouldn't expect them to give away years of programming time.  If you believe what they've done is worthwhile, you pony up to experience it, otherwise we are back to that f2p model.  Free to Play has become nuisance-ware.  Want a bank slot?  Money.  Want to be able to have more than pocket change?  Money?  And the worst of them - want to rearrange your interface in SWTOR?  Money.  I'd rather pay a subscription so the devs can create more content than have them nag me for nickels and dimes until I quit out of frustration.  Am I alone on this?

That's how I prefer to watch TV. Following a show in "real time" seems so...slooowwwwwww...especially when they do those half-season breaks that seem to be common now. The only downside is that we often blow through a show's 3- or 4-season run in just a few months.

We're watching Buffy this way right now and are already near the end of S3. Will probably start Angel and alternate those disks with Buffy to stretch them both out (the two series aired contemporaneously starting in 1999 or 2000, right?). Other shows that we blew through were ST:DS9, Eureka, Babylon 5, BSG, Firefly, and Farscape. We've pretty much run out of great sf shows.

What's worst is catching up with a show by binging on its first few seasons on disk and then having to follow the rest of it in real time, as we did with Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and Lost.

The only show I watch in real time is Game of Thrones.  (lol, I typed in realm time and corrected it just now)    I just can't get enough of that show.  Now THAT's a long wait between seasons!
76  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Binge TV watching on: January 12, 2014, 11:01:28 PM
I see the news that Boardwalk Empire is over.   Nikita ended in December.  24 is off the air.  Arrested Development is done.   Does anyone else typically wait until a show is done and over before binging on all of them right in a row, or is it just the wife and I?   I imagine it hurts the whole ad revenue thing, but I bet that a great many people also do this.  I wonder if content makers bear this in mind?

If there is serious interest, I'll spin up a community-editable calendar that we could maintain together.   I just know that I don't have time to do it myself and write awesome content too.  smile

Just having the calendar would be a start.  how would the content be updated?  per day, per title or uploaded?

Probably the easiest would be to put together a Google calendar, give folks access, and add games to the Tuesdays and Sundays (thanks Nintendo!).   What do you think?
