42  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / I lost a friend last night. (onion cutting warning) on: December 23, 2015, 02:35:05 AM
Last night I had to put my dog Sparky to sleep.  I'm absolutely heartbroken, but I'm hoping that in telling all of you his story I'll feel better.

When I was living in Phoenix I decided that I wanted a chameleon for my birthday.   My wife and I did research on how to take care of them, what sorts of habitats they required, what they ate, etc.  Laura called a local pet shop and found one for me.  She pre-purchased the lizard, a large habitat, some plants, food, some books, and the whole nine yards for our soon-to-be companion.  She drove to the store and talked to the clerk only to find out that they didn't have a lizard for her.  Sure, they already ran the card for all of the aforementioned except for the lizard, but no lizard.  Well, it turns out that they had a little white Jack Russell Terrier in a baby cage sitting in the store.  Convincing them to apply the already-paid amount to the price of the dog, she brought home this little bundle of energy.   We named him Sparky, and he was my "little lizard".  He was my little "birthday present."

Sparky was sitting in that cage for a while because they bobbed his tail too short.  Their tales are supposed to be the length of a closed fist as they dive into holes (natural ratters) and you supposedly pull them out by the 'handle'.  Well, Sparky's tail was about half that size.  When he was excited he's shake that little nub for all it was worth.  Sparky got a nickname "wiggle nub".

Sparky had an adopted brother and sister -- our two Dalmatians, Trouble and Sasha.  Sasha didn't really like toys, but Trouble sure did.  He would drag Sparky across the linoleum flooring via knotted rope while Sparky growled and tried to pull Trouble, even though Trouble was easily 3x his size and weight.  Trouble sometimes let him win.

When Trouble passed away, Sparky stopped playing with toys.  Two years after Sasha passed away we finally adopted again, getting Loki and Pazuzu.   Zu would play with Sparky, and he began to enjoy pulling the rope again.  He was an old man, but sometimes Zu would let him win.  Sparky enjoyed pulling Loki (our Rat Terrier) around on the hardwood floor with the knotted rope.  Loki loved it too, playfully growling the entire time.

Sparky had developed pancreatitis in his old age. He would suffer breathing problems for short bursts and then be back to his old self.  Yesterday his breathing problems turned for the worse, and he simply couldn't stop hurting.  He wasn't responding to his name, and when he went outside to pee he just collapsed in the grass.  I carried him inside, but I knew in my heart it was time.  The vet confirmed what we knew to be true.

As Sparky slowly slipped into his forever-sleep, I told my little birthday present that I would miss him, and that everything was going to be ok.  He looked up at me with recognition for the first time since his attack started yesterday and then laid his head down for the last time.

I'm so heartbroken right now, but I know it was the right thing for him.  I know he's in a better place.  I'm going to miss my little lizard, my little birthday present, my little wiggle nub.  Goodbye Sparky.   tear

The production on this show, as cheap and craptastic as it is, is clearly very expensive.  Not sure it's gonna hit those lofty numbers, but I'm allowed to hope.  smile

48  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Can kids decide? on: November 03, 2015, 01:26:36 AM
I think we live in a day and age where kids grow up too fast in some cases, and don't grow up nearly fast enough in others.  In this case, I think it's hard to say that a kid could make this sort of adult decision without fully understanding the repercussions.  It just makes me sad that many parents, to make a political or religious statement of their own, might use said kid to do so.  frown

I listened to an interview with the founders of Paradox and the impression I got was that they really care about their IPs. Here's hoping for a new Vampire: The Masquerade!

Given what they've done with Cities: Skylines and Pillars of Eternity as publisher, and Crusder Kings 1 and 2 as developer, I have faith they will do good things.  The MMO that was in flight by CCP looked pretty amazing, though it seems like the MMO market has cooled significantly.   I'd love to see another Vampire RPG....

if you're serious, you can get PS1 and PS2 consoles for cheap at the Goodwill - i see them there pretty often now. (actually got an Xbox 360 last year for $24...! it's a first gen, tho. i expect it will RROD some day.)

Gibu hit me up on Steam and we chatted a bit.  I pointed him here.  I believe he lives in England, so I'm not sure what sort of availability there is in terms of Goodwills, but yea -- whatever the English equivalent is is a great source for cheap games.

Guess it's about time for an update.

I'm settled into the new job -- about 100 days in at this point.  I'm loving it for the most part.  There are some of the usual government stereotypes (e.g. "retired in place") but I feel like I'm making a pretty big difference here.  The City of Fort Worth hasn't really invested in their people, processes, or infrastructure in about a decade.  Well, my boss started what would end up being the replacement of 75% of the leadership team.  Us "new guys" are all private sector and bringing that sort of discipline to this public sector job.  I have Voice Eng/Ops, Network Eng/Ops, Security Eng/Ops, Radio Services Eng/Ops, Change Control, Data Center Eng/Ops, and Platform Tech (think servers / Exchange, etc.) Eng/Ops all reporting to me, which has allowed me to make pretty broad and sweeping changes to the infrastructure with very little resistance.  And man was it needed....

The core infrastructure for routing and switching is Nortel. The same Nortel that went out of business in January of 2009.  We also have a bunch of T-1 lines (1.544Mbps) as our connectivity for our remote sites, and 1Gbps for connecting City Hall to our disaster recovery site.  We are ripping out the phone system (also Nortel), the network core, the access switches, and everything in between, as well as changing out the load balancers (end of life), our firewalls (end of life), and just about every other piece of equipment.  In addition, we are working with a company to build a fiber optic ring around the city to connect all of our 200+ sites, taking them from a meg and a half to 10Gbps throughout the city.   It's going to literally transform the way this place does business, and I couldn't be more excited about the opportunity.   Now I just have to wrangle all of that work and make it happen safely (and in some cases, simultaneously).

As for the state itself...yea...Laura and I are gonna be ok, but we don't exactly 'blend' in here.  We aren't overly religious, we don't subscribe to a political party exclusively (instead voting for the best person for the job), and we generally stick to ourselves.  It's been interesting.

Anyway - we moved into our house.  We are slowly unboxing everything and setting everything up in the new place.  We have had to buy a lot of new things using the proceeds from the sale of the previous house as we are still waiting on the damage from the move.  So far the estimate is over $17,000 worth of damage in total.  If you'd like to see the pictures, they are pretty baffling.  It's still very much work in progress, but it's starting to feel a little like home.  smile

Hi Gibu!   I wouldn't say that PS1 is all that popular anymore, but I think we all remember some of the games from that time very fondly.   Games like Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy Tactics, Suikoden I and II, Lunar: Silver Star, Chrono Trigger, Front Mission, Legacy of Kain, Soul Reaver, Tony Hawk, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. looks like my early console life was almost entirely RPGs, doesn't it??

Side note:  why don't you guys every come into the forums and pimp your own reviews in the game discussions?

We used to, but the engagement back (even when volumes were higher) was lacking.  People just weren't engaging.   We'll try again and see how it goes.

As for the redesign, that's much closer than you think.   I know I've been saying that for a while, but I fully intend to launch it this year.  That includes a fully integrated forum/front page.  We did a successful test migration, so it's certainly coming.    I know this has been a pain folks....believe me, it's a priority.   It'll be worth it.

I have no idea what your willing to spend, but I took a chance on Aperion Audio a few years ago and they're fantastic...amazing value. I went with their Verus Grand series after finding nothing but glowing reviews and haven't been disappointed. Granted those are their top-end speakers, but even their lower stuff is supposed to sound great.

The one caveat is that you have to be willing to take a chance on something that you can't hear before buying, but that's not a big risk when they ship them free for a 60-day trial and will pay for the return shipping if you're unhappy. I never thought for a second about returning mine.

Ooooooh.....1900 bucks is a little out of my price range right now, but they are very highly reviewed.  Maybe I'll save up a bit?

What happened with ADT, Ron?  Did they admit they screwed up?  Or did they mysteriously find a reason that it was someone else's fault (as I suspect they will/have)?

ADT's excuse is "We don't actively monitor - we just wait for you to send a signal that you need our help or your alarm goes off unanswered."  I explained that's exactly what happened.  They sent out a tech and he says "Somebody cut the wire"   Well yea!  That's the point!    Apparently the alarm didn't go off, so it doesn't matter that they couldn't contact it at all.  In the end they did exactly what I figured they would do - nothing.

Then I got a bill for over $100 bucks for the service charge.   I called them and read them the riot act.  They removed the fee and waived the last month.   I won't be using them for the new home, that's for sure.

On the damage to the wall situation, I'm still waiting for about $4300 in reimbursements.  On the 24th I move into my new house (with any luck) which should start some level of normalcy in my life again...

I've upgraded but haven't tried any games apart from Hotline Miami 2, and that's not exactly taxing. Everything I've heard indicates that you should see no change in game performance if upgrading from Windows 8, and a small increase in performance if upgrading from Windows 7.

My biggest two issues with Windows 10 right now are a lack of drivers for the Oculus Rift, and the infamous start menu bug that falls apart when you've got more than 512 shortcuts. I have more than 600, so my start menu doesn't work as it should.

That's...a LOT of shortcuts.  Interesting bug though.   That number suggests a limited address space kinda situation, like the sort you'd see back in the Windows 9x days.

The thing that really, really upsets me is that they were able to walk in and just cut the alarm wiring.  The motion sensors are kinda useless if the whole system is offline.    We had people there at 6pm the night before taking pictures for the house closing, and then at 6am we got the report, so the alarm was offline for 12 hours and ADT did nothing??  They are coming out tomorrow to figure out what happened, but that question is gonna stick for me no matter what he finds.

Because of this post:'so-'/

As you know, I've moved to Texas.  I'm selling my house in Phoenix and it was scheduled to close about two weeks ago.   Well, they had problems with some documents on the buyer side so we delayed by a week.  Then somebody got into an accident and ran through the brick wall of my house.  It was repaired yesterday.  I got a call today from my real estate agent.  In the last 24 hours, somebody broke into the house (which is scheduled to close on Wednesday) and....vandalized it.   I'm waiting for pictures, but they shit all over the carpet in the three rooms, stole the speakers that were mounted in the ceiling, kicked out the doggy door, stole the shower heads, stole the spare hardwood, spare carpet, spare kitchen backsplash, damaged a cabinet, and more!   How'd they get in...well, they came in through the doggy door and cut the alarm system's wiring.   Did the alarm go off?  HELL NO!   Why would it?

I've got an insurance claim going, and I've got an ADT rep that's going to come out and find out why the alarm didn't do it's one goddamned job, but I'm so stressed out and upset at this point I can hardly see straight.

Well, I told him already that he can expect to be coming to martial arts class with me.   I figure that's a rapid path to instilling some respect and discipline.   He's also been told that we'll be very involved in his education.   I'm not looking to be a dick to the kid, but I do intend to set some expectations and either reward him for hitting them, or placing consequences for missing them.

I know if I leave this kid where he is, he'll continue on the path he's on.  That path leads to him being like his punk "friends" - drugs, theft, and all manner of dead end.

As for the site, yup - I figured I'd put him to work doing some writing.   Those English 101 skills have served me pretty well in my career.  smile
