16281  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Buying USED Games Hurts Developers? on: June 02, 2004, 06:36:41 PM
There are some games I'll drop the cash on on day one.  Suikoden IV, FSW, etc.  There are many that I just can't risk it since there is no such thing as a return policy at Eb anymore. :/
16282  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / IGN Writing? on: June 02, 2004, 02:26:06 PM
Ok, I'm noticing a trend I the only one?  IGN's Full Spectrum Warrior review slammed the game over and over and then praised it in the last paragraph, it gets a 9.2.  (We'll ignore that the writer has never even seen a gun up close...uh 'you don't shoot the trigger'  Well, that's right!  You don't shoot the trigger, you pull it.  Not a military buff by the writing)

Add the same sort of content on Riddick.  Name a FPS or Third Person Shooter that is longer than 10 hours long, maybe a why the complaints?  Then he praises all over the game again.

Now we have Front Mission 4.  A completely unflattering review with the reviewer expecting something that the genre isn't built for (action complaints on a turn based strategy game) and then complaints that the AI is dumb but battles can last for 100 rounds.  Well...I suspect if you have some skill, the battles would be shorter.

I dunno....I just seem to see a drop in their ability to objectively review games, even lower than it was before.  I don't say this as a competitor,  (we can't compete, they get 13X more traffic than we do) I say it as a writer and a gamer.

Am I all alone in this?
16283  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Tenchu rated higher than Ninja Gaiden on: June 02, 2004, 02:17:14 PM
I found Tenchu lacking compared to Ninja Gaiden.  You have to remember that Gaming Age gave NG a low score before anyone else...smacks of publicity stunt.
16284  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / FT: Hitman Contracts {xbox} on: June 02, 2004, 11:35:26 AM
No need to justify. smile  Just trade away...its yours to do with as you please.  heheh
16285  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Summer Movies: What are you looking forward to? on: June 01, 2004, 09:04:06 PM
You think M.Night has another twist ending for us or is he tapped out?
16286  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Summer Movies: What are you looking forward to? on: June 01, 2004, 07:14:45 PM
Its crazy, but I'm looking forward to Riddick and Sky Captain.  I'm tenatively looking forward to AvP too though.  Its a busy year for movies
16287  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Xbox] Fable coming soon, quotes from preview on: June 01, 2004, 06:12:55 PM
Well, I'll be reviewing Fable.  I was badly burned by Black and White (stuck with the 'to complete the game, start over at the beginning after patching' bug) so I'm not going in blind.  What I saw at E3 was promising and I liked the way they had changed things.  Granted, the automatic progression that it interpreted from your gaming style was cool, but the way they allowed you to modify that by hand was cool too.  We did see that you could pick up scars and such from fighting so some of that automation that would change your 'scary' factor (I think they are calling it 'scaryness') is still in-game.  I'll see if I can't get a preview copy to get the lowdown for you guys...
16288  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Full Spectrum Warrior Reviewed by IGN! :) on: June 01, 2004, 03:18:40 PM
Absolutely.  We will set up some multiplayer times too...
16289  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Game Discussion: Front Mission 4 [PS2] on: May 31, 2004, 02:43:34 PM
I'm with you Hrothgar, with the massive list of games upcoming in the next few days and the gravy train not seeming to end soon I'll probably have to pick this one up when its a greatest hit. smile
16290  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So I broke Return of the King tonight... on: May 31, 2004, 02:41:48 PM
I had that happen with Soul Reaver 2 one time.  Fighting the last boss and all of a sudden the camera backs out as far as it could (I was a little tiny speck at the bottom) and won't move other than left or right.  Couldn't get it to refocus until I guessed my way out of there and into the next room.  Kinda hard to do by 'feeling'.
16291  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Half-Life GOTY Edtion on: May 30, 2004, 11:40:34 PM
Well, the GOTY edition that I bought only had Half Life in it, but you can download CS for free.  It'll take you a month of Sundays to patch everything up to the current but the price is right. smile
16292  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What?! No discussion of Thief? on: May 30, 2004, 09:04:14 PM
I have both. smile  The review will be based entirely on the Xbox version.
16293  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What?! No discussion of Thief? on: May 30, 2004, 05:29:09 PM
I'm writing a full review this weekend.  To address the 'chugging', occasionally you do see some framedrop in some of the more pretty areas.  It seems that they traded some frames for some of the real-time lighting systems and such.  Its not very frequent and it wasn't enough to really bother me.  If this were a FPS twitch game it'd probably be more of a problem, but given the speed you should be moving in this game, its no biggie IMHO.
16294  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / RE: forum rules on: May 28, 2004, 11:11:03 PM
Well, the spirit of the rule was to prevent folks from pimping their personal site as their only point in being here.  Believe me when I say that I've seen that before.  We can certainly re-evaluate it if there is an interest...
16295  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Fight Night 2004 on: May 27, 2004, 11:07:27 PM
I beat it on all weight classes, that help ya with the purchase decision?  I really liked pretty much all of it except the music.  Rap just isn't my thing.  (I swear one guy is yelling "Dreidel" though) If the deal falls through I might have an Xbox copy that we can negotiate. smile

16298  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Game Discussion: Spider-Man 2 [All] on: May 26, 2004, 09:23:32 PM
Sadly, because Sony didn't want ANY of the storyline to be 'ruined' the game wasn't playable at E3.  That said, the gameplay that I have seen is pretty awesome.  I'm supposed to get my hands on this before release, so I'll give you the skinny before you have to lay the cash on the counter.  I figure it'll be soon as the movie is coming up REEEAAAAL fast.

Thankfully the emoticons are easy to change.  I didn't plan on keeping the lions share of these.  I mean really....just WHAT is this icon for:     I don't think "Idea" when I see that icon, I think 'peeping tom looking through a keyhole', 'ironsights on a rifle', or 'confused cyclops'.  Maybe that's just me.

Damned OXM....sigh....two months they have screwed me, first when Ninja Gaiden was on the disc and I just mysteriously didn't get a disc, and now I have a corrupted disc as I wanna try out this demo.  With all the hooplah at E3 I didn't get a chance to try it out. :/

16308  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HALO 2 What is the chance of it being rated T? on: May 19, 2004, 06:14:48 PM
With all the nude, sex games coming out fighting to be M rated I think that we will finally see T = PG13 and M = R. Accually I think they should just use the movie ratings and the same standards.

But that'd be less confusing...why would they DO something that makes sense like that??

Welcome to the boards btw. smile

Well, not to throw too much gas on the rumor fire but this did just happen with Nascar, they own the license for a few years now.  NFL isn't a stones throw away.

Holy smokes!  I hope that this isn't the case, that'd put a serious dent into both Sega and Midway as well.  ouchies

16314  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Thoughts about the new ConsoleGold site... on: May 18, 2004, 01:26:54 PM
I can tell you that its the width of the page that is throwing you off.  Its a known issue and we are working on a second version at 1024x768 as well as a scalable one that fits almost any resolution.

As for E3, it ended Friday, but we'll be uploading screenshots and such for a long time.  That said, expect the site to switch back from E3 mode shortly. (And it was updated yesterday, I posted over 180 screenshots myself and there were 11 or so news items)
16315  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / RSS Feed for ConsoleGold? on: May 18, 2004, 01:25:49 PM
We actually do have an RSS (its a news feed that shows the latest headlines) but we are making some changes to it in the near future.  When those changes are complete we will make it public. smile
16316  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The new consoles of E3 on: May 18, 2004, 02:56:25 AM
We were told that the PSP will be crippled down to about 12 hours of constant gameplay before you have to recharge it. (Only about 3 hours for DVD play though)

As for the DS, it won't hurt to have the second screen except the additional battery draw.  Of course, it also won't convince me to buy it either.
16317  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The new consoles of E3 on: May 17, 2004, 10:47:43 PM
1) The Nintendo DS
2) The Sony PSP
3) Nokia N-Gage QD
4) The DISCover and ApeXtreme consoles?
5) The Infinium Phantom?

I'll play along before class:

1.) Unless there is another use for that second screen other than RPGs, it better cost the same as a GBASP to survive.

2.) Sony has their entire library to draw on including movies, music, and more.  Having seen (and touched) this thing, I can tell you that it will be hard to keep that #1 hat for Nintendo as this appears to be (finally!!) an "Adult's handheld"

3.) The QD?  Well, for those who don't own a phone and don't want the alternatives it might work, but I don't expect a commercial grand slam from this hardware iteration.  It'll do better than the original, but marginally.

4.) ApeXtreme - Despite the lame name (everything with Xtreme in the name fails) it actually works.  I couldn't believe my eyes...its gonna MSRP for around 4-500 bucks, supports DVR (free mind you, with support from Nvidia) and plays PC games nicely at a good resolution in my front room?  My wife will be thrilled as I won't be 'hibernating' in my office and we can play games like CSI and Longest Journey together on the comfy-couch.

5.) I'll leave this spot blank as that is my impression.  They had nothing to show as they 'couldn't get broadband in their area'.  Hmmm...I had no trouble getting a wireless connection.  I wonder if I offered them my wireless bridge, would I have gotten the demo they promised?  On top of that, its 50.00 more than any console and requires a 30.00 fee.  Uh...the Apex costs more but doesn't have that revolving cost and supports more.  Buhbye Phantom, I'm sure you'll stock-split another 10 times before this is over.

Again, just my impressions and opinions. smile  They don't reflect the site and such. smile

16319  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just played Thief: Deadly Shadows on: May 17, 2004, 09:13:11 PM
Ahhh....back from E3.  Let me tackle these bad boys:
1) the locations (what did you see?);

2) AI types (have you seen any undeads?);

3) climbing gloves.

1.) Well, thus far I've been all over this city (its fairly big) including the docks, a cathedral, a hammerite factory, inside a well, and much more.  I was really worried about the depth of the title, but this game is pretty big from what I've seen.

2.) The AI is pretty sharp most of the time, but realize that I'm not playing a gold copy.  There might be some additional tweaking that gets done before launch.  The AI is persistent but not psychic.  If you dodge into a 4 way crossing in a street and duck into the shadows, the enemy will have to look around a bit to find you.  These aren't Ultima Online guards. smile  Oh yea...and yes, I have seen some Undead.  Zombies to be precise, and yes...they still need that special touch from the fire arrows to keep em down. (or you can lure them into a furnace and turn it on...that works on people too

3.) Haven't got the climbing gloves yet and I'm about 3 hours in. I'll keep you updated...

You can tell that I'm one of an arrow-freak, but that's just me. Sadly (gah!) I'm not a native English-speaker, so I may have understood you wrong. But, do you mean that when Garrett kills someone with an arrow, the arrow in fact can be seen in a body like we can see them in wooden support beams (read: I may have misconstrued the word "parcel").
Yes, I'm perverted arrow fanatic and I played LoTR Rotk (Xbox) and enjoyed killing Orcs by arrows.
You'll like this game if you are an arrow freak.  Unfortunately, the arrows disappear when you shoot somebody to put it more plainly.

I'll get the answer on the gloves thing and quicksave/load asap.
16320  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Squenix announces Brave Fencer Musashi 2 + DS game on: May 17, 2004, 09:03:12 PM
I think that the true power of the DS is really only going to be exploited by RPGs.  I am just having a hard time thinking of any other game type that would really benifit from a second persistent screen.  Anyone?
