16281  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Game Discussion: Spider-Man 2 [All] on: June 29, 2004, 08:02:20 PM
Welcome JoePez.  I'm gonna defer to Tim on this one as he has played both.  When I asked him a similar question he did say that the only version he is aware of is that the Xbox does load the levels (it only loads between levels) faster and that it supports progressive (I believe).

He'll answer when he gets a sec. smile

Well, for some of the newer problems (DSO Exploit) there is no defense other than not using IE.  MS has to patch it for that one to go away.  Unfortunately you can't just kill a process as it runs as a batch and the file name and registry entry is polymorphic.  These things resemble their virii brothers more and more every day...
16283  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Spider-Man 2 Review Discussion on: June 29, 2004, 12:06:03 PM
Tim put up his Spider-Man 2 review at 12:01am this morning to make sure you guys could read it before you buy it.  Any thoughts or questions for him?

July 3rd is MY BIRTHDAY!  I wanna play Crimson Skies with you guys again...it was so much fun that it has to be done again.

I will also crank up Pandora Tomorrow and do dedicated hosting if there is an interest...
16286  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Jade Empire...did you know? on: June 29, 2004, 03:13:49 AM
The little minigame that looks like an old scrolling arcade game was actually a joke?  Just something to distract and break away from the code for a little bit of fun.  Seems that the testers liked it so much that they demanded that it stay in the full version.  smile
16287  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GoldenEye: Rogue Agent on: June 29, 2004, 03:10:35 AM
Just posted some new screens for Rogue agent on the site, man that game is starting to look nice.  With EA onboard with Live, what does this spell for the Cube and PS2 version?  Yes, the PS2 has multiplayer, but by the time the game is released will the Cube shift to online, or will Live escalate the sales of the Xbox version far above even the installed userbase of the PS2?  Any way you slice it, its gonna be very cool!

Well, at this point just about anything. Money keeps the lights on, trades are welcome too though...I'll be honest though, I'm hard to trade with.  I uh...run this joint. slywink

Apparently, 3 out of 100 actually click on those spyware pop-ups.  With that, those companies get 37 million in sales.  Positive reinforcement to cause them to continue doing it?  I think so...

16293  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / is all well? on: June 28, 2004, 12:19:24 PM
Stiffler,

You have just experienced what has consumed my time for the last week.  I wish I could say it was a bandwidth issue, but its not.  Our current host up and suspended us the other day without warning or notice (awfully nice isn't it?) and that is when we found that we were utilizing too much CPU horsepower.   It seems that our wonderful site is too 'feature-rich' and all those database accesses are bringing the server to the ground.  I convinced the host to give us a little bit more time to try to correct the issue, but you can see they much prefer to just suspend my account when the site gets 'too busy'.

All that said, we have found a new host that assures us that they can handle us easily (they host Nasdaq, Gateway, Shacknews, Fileshack, etc.) so if it comes down to it we might be moving there rather quickly.  If that does come to pass, I'll be posting in here explaining all of that and what the repercussions will be.  Or as I like to say...more to know as I know it.
16294  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What Xbox games are you looking forward to in 2004/2005? on: June 27, 2004, 10:11:10 PM
I'm with you on Burnout 3, I really enjoyed the previous ones and I'm hoping that having EA as a publisher doesn't wreck the whole damned thing, Lord knows they have shit on my dreams before. *cough Ultima cough*

In the more immediate, Spider-Man 2 is by all accounts knocks the socks off, and based off what little bit I've seen that is absolutely true.  Tim's review is embargoed until Wednesday, so expect it the second the clock strikes 12:00.  smile

I'd have to say that I'm looking forward to Fable still, it looks unique enough to make me interested to play it at least twice, once on each side of the neutral.

On the RPG and Adventure side of things, I'm really looking forward to Star Ocean: Till the End of Time,  KOTOR2, Syberia II (the wife really enjoyed the first one), and Advent Rising just covering the next few months.
16295  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Star Wars: Battlefront on: June 27, 2004, 12:00:30 AM
Destroy all humans was only in video form and a looooong way off according to Pandemic.  Hopefully that eases some things, but I definately see your point.

16298  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / There is going to be a raid.... on: June 25, 2004, 11:09:38 PM
Ok, so I'm listening to NPR on my way home and I hear that there is going to be an enforcement raid on border crossers over the next week.  Umm.....doesn't anyone think it is odd that they are announcing this the week prior?

*Knock Knock*
"Yes?"
"Uh, hi, this is the police...we are going to raid your crackhouse next week, ok?  Don't remove any evidence and make sure everyone is there and unarmed, ok?"
"Uh..ok...see you next week."
"K, thanks buy!"

Why would anyone who has heard that not just wait a week or two and cross then?
16299  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Which XBOX games support widescreen? on: June 25, 2004, 03:14:03 PM

16300  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Which XBOX games support widescreen? on: June 25, 2004, 02:25:10 PM
I don't know that I've ever seen widescreen tracked anywhere (back of the box, website, etc.)   If you find something like that, let me know please?  Thanks!
16301  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Which XBOX games support widescreen? on: June 25, 2004, 01:37:22 PM
I'm not sure what 'widescreen' translates to in the 480p, 1080i, etc, but you can use our search engine to find those things.

As long as the dialogue is interesting, I don't mind it at all.

And therein lies the rub.  A lot of the dialog in this game (and many others) is just absolutely pointless or just rediculous.  For instance, one of your characters in Front Mission 4 likes a girl and there is a whole plot thread that goes on forever that could have simply been cut alltogether.  On top of that, he looks like a whipped puppy with his ... crap because he can't go play with the kids.  Uh...you pilot a giant building-crushing death-dealing mech and you are a grown soldier in the Army.  These things don't mesh.

They also like to recap stuff you JUST SAW. The recap stuff just reminds me of Actraiser.  At the end, they recap everything you did for an ending....uh, I was there and I spent hours in that level, I didn't think I needed a reminder of what I did.  Show me a real ending, you know, me on a ledge with text.  Ok, maybe not that...

16306  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Today's Thing you can't Un-See on: June 24, 2004, 02:36:07 PM
So a co-worker catches me posting in here, spots my business card on my cube wall, reads that it says Director, and then asks me if I want to support his guild.  Ok, I'm game...."What guide is that?" I ask.  He directs me here:

Sweet Jesus...these are the people I have to deal with every day, but dressed up like Gay-Cowboy Jedi, Androgeny jedi, Out-of-shape Jedi, and token guy with rain slicker'Jedi in the back left.  Oh the humanity...its gonna be hard to sit across from this guy at a table any time soon...

So I'm playing Front Mission 4 and I'm finding myself very irritated with the sheer level of dialog in this game.  As I think back, I can recall MANY games with this level of yappyness.  Where is the balance of yappitude?  When can I get back to saving the world?

AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD....Stop....with....the... DOT DOT DOT!  I find that Square is the primary ... cuprit ... on ... that ... crap.  It doesn't serve any useful purpose and its just irritating.  I can't possibly be alone in this.

I was wondering though, if the new consoles are more powerful, would it help games that have frame rate issues on the current ones?

Actually I don't think so.  I.E. Thief was designed for X amount of RAM.  Running it on the Dev Kit which has double the ram of a retail kit doesn't make it faster as the game isn't programmed to take advantage of the extra headspace.

16311  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Are Game Reviews Bought? on: June 22, 2004, 07:31:48 PM
Yea, I always flip to the game section in Maxim, Stuff, and Playboy just to laugh.  They reviewed a 'close to final' version of Half-Life 2 last year, and they always seem to be about the depth that you would get from the back of the box.  Always humourous.....

That they spent the time to create an entirely new engine for the Splinter Cell port is amazing. It shows that Ubi sees great potential for PS2 sales, even months after the original Xbox release. Kudos to Ubi for giving it the same attention.
Rumor has it that Ubi was paid the cost of developing that engine by Sony.  Hard not to make it when somebody foots the bill.
16313  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Multiplatform = Recipe for Disaster? on: June 22, 2004, 03:30:38 PM
When I look at the reviews for games like Driv3r and I see that they have split their attention between the PS2 and Xbox, I have to question the viability of multiplatform titles.  When I look at Splinter Cell, I have to say that it is amazing what they can pull off multiplatform, but they used seperate engines to do it.

So....what is the deal?  Is it shoddy workmanship?  Not enough testing?  Publisher pressure?  Too much compromize?  What's the skinny?  Jump in and give us your thoughts...

16316  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is backwards compatibility a big deal? on: June 20, 2004, 11:17:43 PM
There are a lot of great quality games that I'd always like to go back and play.  For example, playing The Cradle mission in Thief: Deadly Shadows simply for the atmosphere alone would be cool once I've moved on a bit.  That said, with the backlog that most of us have of unfinished games, think of how many times you have broken out the older systems to play through classics like Zelda.  It just doesn't happen that often, or if it does do you actually finish it again?

Yea, I thought about putting that in my review, but I need to make sure I'm not going to piss off the dev/pub by doing it.
