16121  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Multiplatform = Recipe for Disaster? on: June 22, 2004, 05:43:36 PM
Quote
That they spent the time to create an entirely new engine for the Splinter Cell port is amazing. It shows that Ubi sees great potential for PS2 sales, even months after the original Xbox release. Kudos to Ubi for giving it the same attention.
Rumor has it that Ubi was paid the cost of developing that engine by Sony.  Hard not to make it when somebody foots the bill.
16122  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Multiplatform = Recipe for Disaster? on: June 22, 2004, 03:30:38 PM
When I look at the reviews for games like Driv3r and I see that they have split their attention between the PS2 and Xbox, I have to question the viability of multiplatform titles.  When I look at Splinter Cell, I have to say that it is amazing what they can pull off multiplatform, but they used seperate engines to do it.

So....what is the deal?  Is it shoddy workmanship?  Not enough testing?  Publisher pressure?  Too much compromize?  What's the skinny?  Jump in and give us your thoughts...

Was there a big market for this?  Who would want to add this kinda weight to their body??  Not to mention the clank sound if you knock on your chest....
16125  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is backwards compatibility a big deal? on: June 20, 2004, 11:17:43 PM
There are a lot of great quality games that I'd always like to go back and play.  For example, playing The Cradle mission in Thief: Deadly Shadows simply for the atmosphere alone would be cool once I've moved on a bit.  That said, with the backlog that most of us have of unfinished games, think of how many times you have broken out the older systems to play through classics like Zelda.  It just doesn't happen that often, or if it does do you actually finish it again?
16126  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Front Mission 4 - 8 mission Impression. on: June 20, 2004, 03:25:11 PM
Well, I think one of our reviewers is reviewing the title (if not, I have it and I can) but I like your suggestion.  It would be nice to allow readers to submit reviews as well.  We will explore this option in the future....
16127  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Review Discussion: Full Spectrum Warrior on: June 18, 2004, 05:54:34 PM
Well, the camera issues will subside a bit by the time you reach about mission 4., so you should be out of the woods soon.
16128  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Review Discussion: Full Spectrum Warrior on: June 18, 2004, 02:52:18 PM
Ahhh....yes, that is planned Mr. Farley. smile  We already have a field in the DB, we just have to populate it (and that is a LOT of work mind you)
16129  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Review Discussion: Full Spectrum Warrior on: June 18, 2004, 12:04:24 PM
Yea, I thought about putting that in my review, but I need to make sure I'm not going to piss off the dev/pub by doing it.

16132  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / FFXI Deal on: June 17, 2004, 11:58:37 PM
Costco has the PS2 version of Final Fantasy XI with the hard drive for $59.97.  Hard to beat that.  Given that the rumor is that games like GT4 will support the HDD, this might be a good opportunity to pick up the hard drive regardless.

16134  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Console Gold's Future - The Poll on: June 17, 2004, 06:06:37 PM
No matter which way we go it'd be a seperate domain I'd imagine.  You won't find PC stuff on CG.
16135  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Console Gold's Future - The Poll on: June 17, 2004, 06:05:47 PM
Well then I'm glad to have said it.  We are not trying to take anything away from GG.  Hell, there is no way that I could really.  Rich has a magnetism that pulls people in, I really can't even say I understand how it works.  I know that Mary Jo cooked waffles for Rich for breakfast one day.  I know that Rich watches football and has a young son.  I know the details of his injuries.  I know his friends and I know the kinda games he likes to play.  I know more about Rich LaPorte than I know about some of my co-workers!

All that said, name ONE webmaster that you have that level of REAL connection.  If you can name even ONE I'd be surprised.  I couldn't emulate/take that even if I wanted to.
16136  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Console Gold's Future - The Poll on: June 17, 2004, 05:43:36 PM
Well, not to worry.  This isn't a 'next week' expansion.  This is a probably next year sometime timeframe.  There is a LOT of things that I want to do with CG.  Not to worry...this is just very long range planning.

As for the PC, I don't want to compete with Rich.  Don't get that idea in your head.  I want to make something that is doing the things that they are not.  I don't ever want to have people think that I used Rich as some sort of spring board and now I want to somehow bury his site.
16137  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Snowblind *was* Deus Ex: Clan Wars on: June 17, 2004, 04:44:18 PM
Ok.  Here is the deal.  I spoke with my contacts again to confirm.  There is absolutely ZERO connection between the two titles.  Both titles are being developed completely separately.  Ion Storm, Crystal Dynamics, and Eidos have all seen the article and nobody is bothering with it.  Why fight rampant and unsubstantiated rumor speculation?   I don’t blame them…we all know that fighting on the internet is fairly pointless.

Tell ya what, now that this story has 'broken', I'm going to call my reps this morning when they get into the office.  I'll re-confirm and then post.  Granted, if they change their tune we will have an angry conversation at that point. smile

Maybe a real journalist from ConsoleGold can get to the bottom of this?
What the hell is THAT supposed to mean?  It doesn't get much more 'real journalistic' than what I did.  I went directly to the source (developers) and then doublechecked my source with the publisher.  On top of that, I gave a shout to my PR rep to triple check it since there was so much conversation about it.  There is no possible way that Ion Storm would just hand their most precious series to another development house.  Especially with Deus Ex: Invisible War not turning out as good of number as they would have hoped.  They would want that in-house to make sure it doesn't happen again.

As for HomeLan and all the other sites that will regurgitate this same news post...think for a second.  Where might they be getting that from?  Oh, I dunno...Gamespot perhaps?
16143  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Snowblind *was* Deus Ex: Clan Wars on: June 17, 2004, 01:47:17 PM
Oh sure...I'm sure Ion Storm just HANDED Deus Ex to Crystal Dynamics.

Just because Gamespot printed it doesn't make it true.  This counts double when it flies in the face of all reason.

Yea, when I saw that I called my MS rep.  We had a good laugh.

Good times...good times...

I doubt they would launch in 2005, but if they push the backwards compatability angle it might be viable.  The money is in the software....

You would be correct.  There is also an Anime that I've not seen, it fits in somewhere, and then there will be a sequel to Chronicles of Riddick.

Its not a Prequel, its a sequel.  Listen to the beginning part again: "Its been five years....I knew they'd come looking for me" or somesuch.
16160  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Chronicles of Riddick Movie on: June 11, 2004, 04:40:25 PM
Oh definately, it sets up the bridge between the game and the previous movie quite nicely.  Very well handled.  It also sets up for a sequel. smile

Don't get me wrong, if you liked Pitch Black at ALL you need to go see this movie.  For the casual movie person though, ehh....its still a good action flick, but don't pay full price if you haven't seen Pitch Black.
