16041  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Wanna get into the WoW Beta? on: August 28, 2004, 01:54:45 AM
Oh I wouldn't say that.  Yes, it is only 7 days but you can do a lot in that time to get the flavor of the game.  As for the server performance, the issues that I've seen in the last few patches have never really been server performance related.  You don't see people warping around or running in place like you do in EQ and the like.  They have done their homework...

If you wanna try it out, you'll have to play nicey-nice with Fileplanet.  If I'm reading this correctly though, it should allow the general public to try things out for a bit and see whats going on!  Good luck

FilePlanet to exclusively provide stress-test files to 100,000+ players

IRVINE, Calif. – August 26, 2004 – Blizzard Entertainment® today announced plans to collaborate with FilePlanet on Blizzard’s upcoming World of WarcraftTM stress test beta. This 7-day test will help Blizzard optimize World of Warcraft to deliver the best online-gaming experience possible when it launches later this year. Gamers in North America will have the opportunity to become one of over 100,000 people chosen to participate in the stress test and try out World of Warcraft before its release.

Sign-ups for the World of Warcraft stress test beta are scheduled to take place exclusively on the FilePlanet Web site ( Additional information regarding the start date of the sign-ups and the start of the stress test beta will be released on the FilePlanet Web site in the days ahead. Anyone in North America can apply—one submission per person—and selected testers will be notified by FilePlanet and receive further instructions after completing the sign-up process.

“We’re pleased to be working closely with FilePlanet to conduct this stress test for World of Warcraft,” stated Paul Sams, senior vice president of business operations at Blizzard Entertainment. “They have extensive experience delivering files to tens of thousands of people daily, and they share Blizzard’s high standards for quality and information security.”

The World of Warcraft stress test beta is designed to tax the game’s server infrastructure, allowing Blizzard to evaluate the account-creation process and server performance under heavy loads. Stress-test participants will be able to play the same content that is currently being tested by World of Warcraft’s closed-beta testers, but the stress test beta will take place on separate servers in order to avoid unbalancing the closed beta test. Blizzard will also be conducting an open beta test, in which everyone is free to participate, in the months ahead.

World of Warcraft is Blizzard Entertainment’s highly anticipated massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the award-winning Warcraft® universe. Players assume the roles of legendary heroes as they explore the game’s diverse cities and wilds, revisiting famous battlefields and questing through vast expanses of uncharted territory. Whether adventuring together or fighting against each other in epic battles, thousands of players will be able to interact online within the same persistent world, forming friendships, forging alliances, and competing with enemies for power and glory.

16049  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / My morning....ehhh....not so good. on: August 26, 2004, 04:05:32 PM
So this is not my morning.  On my way to work this morning I love-tapped a guy on a bike.  I was trying to round the corner, he waved me on and then darted out in front of me from the sidewalk.  No damage to my car, no damage to his bike.  So whats his natural reaction?  He starts swinging punches at me!  So I'm trying not to have to fight this guy, I'm blocking what he is throwing and its just making him more mad.  Finally he gets one shot in and hits me in the damned ear.  Instant Fight Club moment..."Why the EAR?!"  So I shoulder lock him and he keeps fighting so I threw him to the pavement.  He gets back up and I told him he needs to stop before I hurt him.  He lunges at me again and gets to meet Mr. Pavement again.  He gets back up and rages towards me again and I put him to the pavement for a third time.  At this point the cops roll up and send us to our seperate corners.  The cops came over and inspected my hands to see if it was true that I hadn't hit him. (thankfully there was a witness)  So the end result?  I get to pay the city 185 bucks (failure to yield ticket) and he got a free ride in the patrol car with a big stack of tickets.   Apparently you can add "Bike Rage" to the list of Road Rage categories.

16064  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PC-PR] Stronghold 2 Announced on: August 24, 2004, 01:33:57 PM
And here it is...

New York - August 24, 2004 - Global Star Software, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:  TTWO), and Firefly Studios are pleased to announce Stronghold 2, the sequel to the award-winning titles Stronghold and Stronghold: Crusader. The Stronghold franchise has sold over 1.5 million units worldwide.

Due to be released for PC in early 2005, the castle-sim and siege-warfare RTS game Stronghold 2 will bring the series to life in glorious 3D. Stronghold 2 will also offer players a "castle-life" campaign, enhanced multiplayer capability and a new, innovative and exciting single player campaign that will be revealed in the months ahead.

"The first Stronghold game pioneered a genre by combining the elements of simulation games and combat strategy into a single unique experience," said Christoph Hartmann, Senior Vice President of Publishing at Global Star. "Now we are thrilled to bring Stronghold 2 to the market, which will undoubtedly set the standard as Firefly Studios has taken its already highly regarded gameplay and pushed it beyond anyone's expectations with new and innovative features.  We are confident that Stronghold 2 will captivate gamers in 2005."

"We decided to steer away from the typical RTS mold when we developed the original Stronghold," said Simon Bradbury, Director at Firefly Studios.  "Now, with a 3D engine that can render tens of thousands of animated characters on-screen simultaneously, we can explore the intricacies of castle-life and the machinations of siege-warfare like never before in Stronghold 2. Once again we will take the Stronghold franchise into new and exciting territory."

My problem with Mr. M's games are typically that they are one-trick ponies.  You can train your creature....and now I'm taking it away from you.  Now you have it back, but you've probably gotten bored by now.  Have fun!

I'm hoping that Fable is not all surface flash like B&W seemed to be for me.  If the good option and the bad option the same eventual outcome I'll be disappointed.  If everything you do truly does culminate in a different experience with a different ending (which I've heard time and time again that it does) then it'll be a knock-your-socks-off title.  In just a little bit we will know for sure...
