Well, I know which side of the fence I'll be sitting on.  Even in Black and White, no matter how white and beautiful my tower was, it eventually started to get kinda 'pointy' and evil looking.  Its all downhill from there...

I do have an region free dvd player...and I am an import fiend.  Don't do it Mitch...its expensive. slywink

As for the redubbed + subs I think Crouching Tiger was one of the worst redubbs Iv'e seen.  Some scenes were just flat out wrong or the meaning was exactly opposite of the original Mandarin language track.

Is there something similar to this that's free?

And therein lies the rub.  I've never found a decent one that is free.
16006  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Fable - Massive list o' features on: August 18, 2004, 01:40:47 PM
Well, here is a scenario that made me want to play it:

You are a kid and you stumble upon a guy cheating on his wife.  You can tell his wife and do the 'good thing', take a bribe from the guy and do the 'bad thing'.  You can also do the EVIL thing (rubs hands) and take the bribe, go tell the wife, go back and kill the husband, grow up and then MARRY his wife.  Ahh....sweet Evilness....is there anything better?

- Releases Septemer 14th in the United States, and October 8th in Europe.

You can beat the game using only a frying pan.

You can pick pocket people.

You can buy other people beer and spit in their drinks (I think)

I think there are only 15 spells (not sure). (if anything, there are 17 spells... The spells that are not in the compendium are: Flamecharge/Battlecharge, Fireball, Paralyze, Push, Summon creature (might be Turncoat), Summon weapon)

Never heard any thing about crossbows... (Yes, they exist. They show the hero using one on the bonus DVD. He shot two arrows/bolts, then had to reload.)

Some spells can be upgraded up to 7(!)x while others can only be upgraded 4x I believe. (It's 4-7, so some are in between those.)

You can save any time you like, except while your in the middle of a mission. (But it does autosave after you finish the mission.)

There is a boasting system for quests to make the game harder.

Don’t know about destructible enviroments.. I have not seen this in any videos/screen shots yet. (Not environments, objects. Like barrels, crates, doors, windows, among others.)

When your using a bow you can go into a first person type of view (not exactly) to snipe people off. (You can first zoom into an over-the-shoulder view, where a targeting reticle will show up. Then you can go into a zoom-in sniper view, but the reticle will reverberate more and it'll be harder to aim.)

There are mushrooms in the game!

You can lure most NPCs...

There are secrets hidden in the world of Albion (the awesome Sand Goose).

Don’t know about many different styles of towns... They all look pretty similar. There are 5 major towns and a few smaller bandit camps and stuff.. (The Gamespot preview before their newest one said they were different. Knothole Glade is apparantly more camp/village/tribe like than other cities, and of course there are other examples.)

NPC’s will have different likes/dislikes...

If your a good/bad character and get married your wife will leave you if you change. (She can also cheat on YOU with another man, and if you find out, rumors can spread about her. At least that's how it used to be, don't know about now.)

If your wife finds out that your cheating she will leave you and you can go into the pub and actually hear her talking about you.

Clothing effects how people feel about you.

If you get lots of tattoo’s people will be more afraid of you.

You can actually be ridicules! It’s actually a setting!!

The type of clothing you wear on some missions will make it easier/harder for you.

You can kill anyone in the game except children.

There is a town in Albion where you’re not allowed to use weapons (children are only in this town). (There are lots of towns with children. The city that forces you to leave your weapons outside of it is some sort of imperial palace type... thing....)

You can hire mercenaries to assist you.

There are good/evil chapels.

If you are caught doing a crime then you can either pay a fine, attempt to kill the guards, or get kicked out of town.

The economy system in Albion is based on supply and demand. You do not make up your own prices. (You can when you own a store.)

When purchasing items a number will be displayed beside the price of the item to let you know if that item is the cheapest it can possibly be.

There are spells to help melee and ranged players.

Don’t know if you can cut limbs off... (You can't.)

You can play through the game being un armed (no weapons) . You can punch and kick and will be able to roll around to dodge attacks...

You can upgrade homes...

There are helmets in the game...

If your good you get butterflies around you (when still) and a halo over your head.

If your bad then you get flies around you (when still) and you grow horns over your head.

You only get horns and halos if your extremely evil/good.

Basic story: Your father is killed and your mother and sister and kidnapped. You are rescued and sent to the heroes guild, later something happens and you will have to save the world of Albion. It is promised that you will feel like a hero by the end of the game.

Children will mimic you if they like you and you have high renown.

You can beat people up with trophies.

You can fish and put your trophies in your home for display. (And beat people with them.)

Men will not come on to you unless you come on to them first.

We don’t know how many enemies there are in Albion. Probably over a dozen though.

Don’t know what weapon straps are? (Sheaths for swords, quivers for arrows, etc...)

You can easily change from magic/melee/ranged in real time any time you want to.

We don’t know if you can learn tricks to impress people... I don’t think there are any magic tricks or any thing like that. (They're expressions. They're not a category of their own.)

When your a kid you can get away with crime, but later you have to pay or you will be kicked out of town. I don’t know if you can bribe them (I think all guards are good), but I don’t know...

One day in Albion is approx (I don’t know the exact number) 1 hour in real time. (It's 48 minutes exactly. 1 hour = 2 minutes.)

NPC’s all run on the same AI’s. NPC’s will remember you if you do something bad to them. Given time most NPC’s will forgive/forget you.

You can break into any building in Albion.

We don’t know if they meant 8 square Km (at least I don’t know)...

Fable is not free roam. Most of the time you will be on paths. It has been said many times that there are larger areas to explore and most paths will have more then only one entrance.

When you are fully zoomed in you will see more detailed effects (ripples in the water).

Sadly it is true.  We use strict xml on our site and some parts of it (pieces of our database back end) just break when you use Mozilla.

16029  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PC-PR] Ubisoft Announces "Alexander" game based o on: August 11, 2004, 05:00:05 PM
San Francisco – August 11, 2004 – Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, in cooperation with Intermedia Films and Internationale Medien und Film GmbH & Co. 3 Produktions KG (IMF3) today announced Alexander, a real-time strategy video game based on the upcoming motion picture Alexander, the highly anticipated biopic based on the life and conquests of Alexander the Great from Academy Award winning director Oliver Stone.  The game will be available for the PC day-and-date with the US theatrical release November 2004, with the European release to follow. Warner Bros. will distribute the picture in North America and select international territories. The official movie trailer may be viewed by visiting http://www.alexanderthemovie.com

“We are extremely excited to bring the grandeur and epic experience of the film Alexander to the video game arena,” said Laurent Detoc, executive director of Ubisoft’s North American division. “Our development team is thrilled to be working with director Oliver Stone to ensure that the video game captures the essence of this extraordinary motion picture. The game will include selected music from world famous composer Vangelis – whose music comprises the film’s soundtrack - movie extracts, and other features to make sure that the game is as daring, bold and ambitious as its subject, Alexander the Great.”

“Alexander is probably the greatest single military strategist of all time. Historical and ‘what if’ strategies are being scrupulously rendered by Ubisoft. One variation even has (Persian King) Darius emerging the victor over Alexander. Players will have serious possibilities for winning and losing empires. I’m looking forward to playing,” says Stone.

The RTS gameplay in Alexander promises to be challenging enough to entice the hard core gamer, but will also provide a gaming experience accessible to a larger audience of casual gamers. Players will experience the epic scope of Alexander’s conquests via historic campaigns, each with unique characteristics and resource management challenges, and featuring heroes from Alexander the Great’s era. Players will fight real-time battles using formations, combat and authentic military tactics, while commanding vast armies in foreign lands. Blood will be spilled on the battlefield and honor will be put to the test, as a combination of courage and strategy will determine the victor.

HOLLYWOOD’S UNDERWORLD MASTERPIECE, SCARFACE, TO BECOME AN EXPLOSIVE NEW GAME

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 10, 2004) – Vivendi Universal Games announced today the epic film that transcends generations and appeals to contemporary and urban audiences alike, Scarface, is now coming for the first time to game consoles worldwide. In a complex world filled with excess and greed, players can take the role of Tony Montana, one of the most ruthless gangsters ever depicted on film.  Developed by Radical Games and published by Vivendi Universal Games, this third person action shooter is expected to ship Fall 2005.

“The treacherous world of Scarface is a natural property to translate into a cinematic game play experience,” said Michael Pole, Executive Vice President, Worldwide Studios for Vivendi Universal Games. “The game will feature cutting-edge technology, a compelling storyline and the unprecedented experience of playing as one of Hollywood’s most notorious gangsters, Tony Montana.”

“Scarface was a landmark film and has inspired countless movies and games,” said Bill Kispert, vice president of Interactive at Universal Studios Consumer Products Group. “Having the chance to now bring gamers the authentic experience is an opportunity and challenge we are looking forward to.”

Highly acclaimed screenwriter, David McKenna, has written an original event-driven storyline for the interactive game that will lead the player through a sordid underworld.  The Scarface video game will create a gameplay environment that authentically recreates the historical time period of the film, touching on politics, news items and events of the day. Players will travel through the steamy, often violent streets of Miami, the irie islands of the Florida Keys, the Bahamas and various other locales and will interact with a world full of seedy and dangerous characters to procure information, negotiate business deals, smuggle contraband and avoid rivals and DEA on a mission to rebuild their fallen empire.

About the film
Al Pacino gives an unforgettable performance as Tony Montana, one of the most ruthless gangsters ever depicted on film, in this gripping crime epic inspired by the 1932 classic of the same title. Directed by hit-maker Brian DePalma and produced by Martin Bregman who brought the Godfather legends to the screen, Scarface follows the violent career of Tony Montana (Pacino), a ruthless Cuban refugee who blasts his way to the top of Miami’s drug underworld, attaining wealth and power beyond his wildest dreams. His rags-to-riches ascent is marked by memorable moments, including a scene in which the cocky Montana risks his neck to propose to Elvira (Michelle Pfeiffer), the girlfriend of murderous drug kingpin Frank Lopez (Robert Loggia). Only in the film’s devastating finale does Montana come to grips with the awful price of his lavish empire.

With its intense screenplay by Academy AwardÒ-winner Oliver Stone, driving music score by Giorgio Moroder, and superb insights into Miami’s lifestyle, Scarface lays bare the sordid power of the American drug scene.

Scarface is rated R.  Please consult www.filmratings.com for further information.

“We were approached by more than 60 musicians who were interested in doing the score for War World – Tactical Combat,” said Morten Brodersen, Third Wave Games.  “It was a tough choice selecting the right person for the job, and we believe we have found somebody who is absolutely the perfect fit for our vision and to the team.”

That is an interesting genre.  I'd call it the "Builder" genre.  There really isn't an 'objective' typically, but more a sandbox for you to build what is in your head if you had the tools.  I played the 2nd RCT but after my first de-rail I moved on.  Not my cup of tea...what IS my cup of tea though is games like the upcoming Evil Genious and games like Theme Hospital and Dungeon Keeper.  Man I miss Bullfrog...

How in the world would a trained professional killer not have his an amateur with AT LEAST one bullet during the train scene at the end? But the amateur hits him? Please...
You can see the bullets in the door that didn't quite penetrate from Cruises gun that he got from the cop.  Foxx'es gun was the assassins gun, you can bet he was probably using armor piercing rounds, so I'm willing to suspend my disbelief on that.

It's not a bad movie, but between the look-how-cool-I-am director kitsch, the easy-way-out plot devices, and all of the coincidences, (yeah, like you're going to lose cell signal in one of the busiest business districts in the world)
Ugh...I know EXACTLY where that building is, and having stayed in the hotel close to there let me tell you that the cell reception was crap.  Besides, he ran out of power. smile

That said, there were some plot devices that needed too much thought for an action flick.  As for why not drive himself, they explained in the movie that he uses the crazy-cabbie as his cover.  He doesn't exist...
