16009  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PC-PR] Ubisoft Announces "Alexander" game based o on: August 11, 2004, 05:00:05 PM
San Francisco – August 11, 2004 – Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, in cooperation with Intermedia Films and Internationale Medien und Film GmbH & Co. 3 Produktions KG (IMF3) today announced Alexander, a real-time strategy video game based on the upcoming motion picture Alexander, the highly anticipated biopic based on the life and conquests of Alexander the Great from Academy Award winning director Oliver Stone.  The game will be available for the PC day-and-date with the US theatrical release November 2004, with the European release to follow. Warner Bros. will distribute the picture in North America and select international territories. The official movie trailer may be viewed by visiting http://www.alexanderthemovie.com

“We are extremely excited to bring the grandeur and epic experience of the film Alexander to the video game arena,” said Laurent Detoc, executive director of Ubisoft’s North American division. “Our development team is thrilled to be working with director Oliver Stone to ensure that the video game captures the essence of this extraordinary motion picture. The game will include selected music from world famous composer Vangelis – whose music comprises the film’s soundtrack - movie extracts, and other features to make sure that the game is as daring, bold and ambitious as its subject, Alexander the Great.”

“Alexander is probably the greatest single military strategist of all time. Historical and ‘what if’ strategies are being scrupulously rendered by Ubisoft. One variation even has (Persian King) Darius emerging the victor over Alexander. Players will have serious possibilities for winning and losing empires. I’m looking forward to playing,” says Stone.

The RTS gameplay in Alexander promises to be challenging enough to entice the hard core gamer, but will also provide a gaming experience accessible to a larger audience of casual gamers. Players will experience the epic scope of Alexander’s conquests via historic campaigns, each with unique characteristics and resource management challenges, and featuring heroes from Alexander the Great’s era. Players will fight real-time battles using formations, combat and authentic military tactics, while commanding vast armies in foreign lands. Blood will be spilled on the battlefield and honor will be put to the test, as a combination of courage and strategy will determine the victor.

HOLLYWOOD’S UNDERWORLD MASTERPIECE, SCARFACE, TO BECOME AN EXPLOSIVE NEW GAME

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 10, 2004) – Vivendi Universal Games announced today the epic film that transcends generations and appeals to contemporary and urban audiences alike, Scarface, is now coming for the first time to game consoles worldwide. In a complex world filled with excess and greed, players can take the role of Tony Montana, one of the most ruthless gangsters ever depicted on film.  Developed by Radical Games and published by Vivendi Universal Games, this third person action shooter is expected to ship Fall 2005.

“The treacherous world of Scarface is a natural property to translate into a cinematic game play experience,” said Michael Pole, Executive Vice President, Worldwide Studios for Vivendi Universal Games. “The game will feature cutting-edge technology, a compelling storyline and the unprecedented experience of playing as one of Hollywood’s most notorious gangsters, Tony Montana.”

“Scarface was a landmark film and has inspired countless movies and games,” said Bill Kispert, vice president of Interactive at Universal Studios Consumer Products Group. “Having the chance to now bring gamers the authentic experience is an opportunity and challenge we are looking forward to.”

Highly acclaimed screenwriter, David McKenna, has written an original event-driven storyline for the interactive game that will lead the player through a sordid underworld.  The Scarface video game will create a gameplay environment that authentically recreates the historical time period of the film, touching on politics, news items and events of the day. Players will travel through the steamy, often violent streets of Miami, the irie islands of the Florida Keys, the Bahamas and various other locales and will interact with a world full of seedy and dangerous characters to procure information, negotiate business deals, smuggle contraband and avoid rivals and DEA on a mission to rebuild their fallen empire.

About the film
Al Pacino gives an unforgettable performance as Tony Montana, one of the most ruthless gangsters ever depicted on film, in this gripping crime epic inspired by the 1932 classic of the same title. Directed by hit-maker Brian DePalma and produced by Martin Bregman who brought the Godfather legends to the screen, Scarface follows the violent career of Tony Montana (Pacino), a ruthless Cuban refugee who blasts his way to the top of Miami’s drug underworld, attaining wealth and power beyond his wildest dreams. His rags-to-riches ascent is marked by memorable moments, including a scene in which the cocky Montana risks his neck to propose to Elvira (Michelle Pfeiffer), the girlfriend of murderous drug kingpin Frank Lopez (Robert Loggia). Only in the film’s devastating finale does Montana come to grips with the awful price of his lavish empire.

With its intense screenplay by Academy AwardÒ-winner Oliver Stone, driving music score by Giorgio Moroder, and superb insights into Miami’s lifestyle, Scarface lays bare the sordid power of the American drug scene.

Scarface is rated R.  Please consult www.filmratings.com for further information.

Seattle, Wa (Aug. 10, 2004) – Third Wave Games, the new video game development house formed by industry veterans Morten Brodersen, Johnni Christensen and Phillip Tavel, has chosen game composer legend Mason B. Fisher to join its development team and produce the soundtrack for the upcoming title War World – Tactical Combat.

Recently making his return to the PC gaming scene, Fisher will come on board to compose the soundtrack for the company’s first title, War World – Tactical Combat, a first/third person mech-on-mech single and multiplayer combat game for the PC due out this fall. Inspired by musical scores from such composers as John Barry, and music from heavy metal bands including Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin and Metallica, Fisher brings more than 10 years of sound producing, composing and designing to the already accredited War World team.

"I first wanted to be involved with Third Wave Games because I was impressed with the team that they have managed to assemble,” said Mason B. Fisher, composer War World – Tactical Combat.  “Third Wave has constructed a solid core of game enthusiasts -- game fanatics -- who specialize in all fields of game development.  I have been extremely impressed with the overall game concept and game engine for War World – Tactical Combat.  It's going to be a fun ride."

Fisher’s original composing credits includes renowned projects such as Age of Wonders II: The Wizard’s Throne as well as highly celebrated producing and sound designing ventures including “A Change of Heart” for which he received both Telly and Axiem Awards.

“We were approached by more than 60 musicians who were interested in doing the score for War World – Tactical Combat,” said Morten Brodersen, Third Wave Games.  “It was a tough choice selecting the right person for the job, and we believe we have found somebody who is absolutely the perfect fit for our vision and to the team.”

About Third Wave Games

Video game veterans, Morten Brodersen, Johnni Christensen and Phillip Tavel pooled their many years of experience in creating multimillion unit-selling franchises to form the new video game development house, Third Wave Games.  The company’s first game introduction will be War World – Tactical Combat, a first/third person mech-on-mech single and multiplayer combat game for the PC due out this fall. Designed for single and multiplayer mayhem, War World – Tactical Combat is a fast paced, first/third person single and multiplayer fighting game where players build and battle the ultimate mech warriors.  War World – Tactical Combat will be available via online download this fall for $19.99, and after launch, War World – Tactical Combat will continue to flourish with new expansion packs being offered every couple of months.

That is an interesting genre.  I'd call it the "Builder" genre.  There really isn't an 'objective' typically, but more a sandbox for you to build what is in your head if you had the tools.  I played the 2nd RCT but after my first de-rail I moved on.  Not my cup of tea...what IS my cup of tea though is games like the upcoming Evil Genious and games like Theme Hospital and Dungeon Keeper.  Man I miss Bullfrog...

16020  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Collateral - Movie Discussion (Spoilers) on: August 09, 2004, 07:28:12 PM
SPOILERS

How in the world would a trained professional killer not have his an amateur with AT LEAST one bullet during the train scene at the end? But the amateur hits him? Please...
You can see the bullets in the door that didn't quite penetrate from Cruises gun that he got from the cop.  Foxx'es gun was the assassins gun, you can bet he was probably using armor piercing rounds, so I'm willing to suspend my disbelief on that.

Quote
It's not a bad movie, but between the look-how-cool-I-am director kitsch, the easy-way-out plot devices, and all of the coincidences, (yeah, like you're going to lose cell signal in one of the busiest business districts in the world)
Ugh...I know EXACTLY where that building is, and having stayed in the hotel close to there let me tell you that the cell reception was crap.  Besides, he ran out of power. smile

That said, there were some plot devices that needed too much thought for an action flick.  As for why not drive himself, they explained in the movie that he uses the crazy-cabbie as his cover.  He doesn't exist...
16021  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Collateral - Movie Discussion (Spoilers) on: August 08, 2004, 03:44:53 PM
So I went and saw Collateral yesterday and I have to admit that I enjoyed it quite a bit.   I'm not a big Jaime Foxx fan and that dude from "In The Cut" made me think he was going to pull a Halle Barry and ruin my movie in record time, but all in all it was solid performances all around.  Even Tom Cruise didn't turn in his usual Captain Charisma character portrayal.  (Although I really wasn't sold on his 'aged' look)

(Spoilers below)
The move kept a solid pace and some parts of it completely shocked me (Jazz man...I didn't see it comin)  and other parts were absolutely predictable (JP Smith as last on the list).  The only thing that I thought could have used a little more love was the very end...it just seemed very abrupt, although him sitting on the MTI and riding it was fitting.
(End Spoilers)

Anyone else see the movie?  What did you think?

Thanks goes out to Tim for pointing this out:

Seems that this little config tweak would help those of us with copious amounts of RAM to run the game better. smile

I'd say the game is a good blend of System Shock and Half Life, I'd not miss that just because I don't have a rig that can run it.

Question: What did you do in the military before you became a civie like the rest of us? Or is that classified?

Hmmm, I had two jobs while in the military, one I can talk about (Worked in IT for RED HORSE on a Nuke base and a Fighter base) and one that I can't talk about. smile  I enjoyed both.

Question: Has your life changed for the better since the inception of Console Gold?

Hmm....changed for the better?  Well, I find that I've learned a lot about people, business, management, and life in general since Console Gold kicked off.  That knowledge will serve me well in my life I think.  I'm sure I don't need to tell you how much time this takes though, this could easily be a full time job.  I'd love for it to become one....

By the way, for a frame of reference:

Smooth performance (just over 30fps I'd guess with the occasional hiccup down to maybe 27) on my system:

ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
768mb PC333 Corsair RAM
AMD K7 2 Ghz
1024x768 - High settings (not highest, but one notch down)
