161  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Almost Human = cancelled on: April 30, 2014, 05:01:13 PM
http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/04/29/almost-human-canceled-fox/

Damn it Fox.  Why do you kill everything I love?!  It ONLY had 5.6 MILLION viewers.  Obviously we need to cancel that and replace it with some other shit-tastic realty or singing show....
162  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: First CK, now MO? on: April 30, 2014, 04:51:19 PM
So I'll even say that I've been posting less here.  I've been so focused on building the front page content that I've neglected the boards.   You guys hit on a good point though - boards are starting to become an antique of sorts.   Newer generations of gamers eschew them completely (or don't know what the hell the word eschew means) in favor of things like Twitter.  Often they have a "if it ain't on my phone, it ain't worth seeing" sort of attitude.  As a result, other areas of the site are growing while the forums (despite the feeling) is pretty much steady on traffic.    Put simply, we have roughly 130,000 unique people hitting GT every month, but they are spending their time at our YouTube channel (just cleared half a million views on that), get their news from our Twitter and Facebook feeds, and read our editorials on the front page.   If I could figure out a way to get them in here I would.

All of that said, we are looking at folding the whole thing together and unifying the front page with the forums.  Comments on the front page would also appear in the forums, and visa versa.  It'd unify the conversation, and engage new blood that otherwise would avoid a forum.  We are also in the process of hiring somebody to tackle news on a very frequent basis.  We want to become your go-to place for gaming news in addition to reviews and such.  Step outside the forums - we've got really cool stuff going on elsewhere on this same site!

I sell things here and there on Amazon.  I've only run into one issue.  The differences between Amazon and EBay is that on Amazon my item sells within hours, sometimes minutes.  On eBay it can sit forever.  Risk of doing business?

Will do.  Ubi does a solid job with their PC ports.  The question will be how intrusive is the UPlay part of it.   From what I've heard it's "check once on launch" and then it goes away.  We'll see....

Yea, that's exactly right - they wouldn't see our box IP, but Cloudflare's.   They are likely blocking thousands of legitimate sources if they are blocking cloudflare....

In short, play it like a Thief game and you'll enjoy it.  Play it like a shooter and a.) you are an idiot and b.) you aren't going to enjoy it.    Almost every negative review I read prefaced their opinion with "I'm more of a first person shooter guy" or "I've played all of the Call of Duty games" (well good for you, junior).   I also get the feeling that some of these guys didn't play past the first two levels.

Well, I have to take your word for that, but I could have sworn one of the things that was touted early in this generations development 60FPS was a big seller.

Oh it is, it is. It's just that 60 fps is hard to achieve, even on the PS4, without sacrificing something. It depends on the game type too, of course, but the general idea is that the more open and graphically advanced a game is, the less likely it is to hit 60 fps. Developers have to make a choice between framerate and graphical fidelity, particularly for multiplatform titles, and many will choose the latter.

For me the 60fps thing doesn't matter in games like this where you tend to move slowly.   Texture tearing happens in racing games where things are flying a bajillion miles an hour past your face in my experience.  (though I've seen it in titles like StarCraft II as well...)

I do have to go back to the point that Gratch made early on though - why do people care so much?  Let everyone be married and miserable like the rest of us.

Simple - battery size at the time of launch.  My custom controller from Evil Controllers uses a current-gen Kindle battery - it's flat as a board on the back and charges just like the XB1.

My wife, mother, and I went to the theater and saw this.   We all enjoyed it, but none of us had read the book.  Somebody was nice enough to spoil the goddamned thing for me before hand (just like Harry Potter!  Awesome!) but I thought it was decent.   They certainly spent the dollars on the space sim sections!  I just wonder if they'll tackle any of the other books.  When I finish up Game of Thrones, Ender is next on my list.

Yea, I agree with you on Keaton.  They really did marginalize Chalkie's character ...er..I mean "Lewis".  Not a lot of screentime to what was a pretty integral character last time.

I quit soda cold turkey.   I'm drinking about 100oz of water (large 'workout' bottle 3x a day for straight water) and then I drink the Costco flavored 0 carb waters (Talking Rain).  Takes care of the sweet tooth craving for soda, but not bad for me.  If I taste soda now it's like putting a battery on my tongue.

Ugh, 'free to play' on a feature list continues to throw up gigantic red flags for me.  Even the "but you can try it for free to see if you like it!" angle doesn't work for me, because I'd find it supremely annoying if I did like it only to run into a paywall scheme I can't stand.
A lot of free to play stuff on the PC is quite good.   League of Legends, Smite, Dota2, Warframe, and Loadout all spring to mind.
Yup, that's why I said red flags rather than an outright disqualification.  But like with Smite, I was supremely happy to be able to pay the $30 forever-hero unlock and make it so I bought the whole game rather than having to pay piecemeal as I go.

100% this.  "I recognize that I like your game, developer person.   Please allow me to purchase it and then not be bothered ever again.  Thank you!"

So I did the 'everybody' thing and decided to get myself in great shape this year.  Better than that, I set in motion.   I lift 4x a week with a trainer HIIT style (high intensity intervals, no breaks, 60 minutes) and then I've been using Xbox Fitness 2-3 days a week for cardio for 50 minutes each session.   Since Jan 1st I've lost 12.5lbs and I'm lifting FAR more than I ever thought I could.  (e.g. seated dumbell shoulder press with 90lbs in each arm)  I'm gonna keep going on this track and see where it leads me, but so far so good.

Lol, you are?  nifty!   You have to keep track of which gate is open and when.  For instance, to get the the Warrens (aka slums) they are only open between midnight and 6am.  After that they close the doors and you can't get there until the next day.  There are only a handful of days to finish the game, so getting there to find a closed gate is just annoying.

It writes those times on the map.

True, but in most RPGs you could get there when you get there and that'd be just fine.  Go solving side quests, level up your characters, etc.  Now we are forced to say "Well, I only have an hour so I better run and be past that gate before it closes or I can't access that area.  Oh shit, but that means I can't do this other thing till tomorrow".  It's arbitrary and that's what bugs me.

Was it the whole first mission? I am concerned if missions can be finished in 17 minutes, but don't want to watch it and be spoiled... Hopefully, if it is the whole mission they get longer...

This was clearly a player who knew the map perfectly already, and if you look at the stats at the very end of the video, you'll see that he barely got any treasures or collectibles, and there was lots of room for improvement.

The video was promising, but what I'm really wondering about is what happens when you get spotted. If you can reliably fight your way out of trouble, much of the tension disappears.

From my hands-on time with it, if you get spotted you are going to get clubbed like a baby seal.  You could probably go toe-to-toe with one peon guard, but get a Sergeant or a pair of them and you're worm food.  I completely agree though - I'm Garrett, not Master Chief.

This is turn-based? Weird, every video I've ever seen of the game made it seem like an action spin off.

No, it isn't turn-based.  You can assign up to 4 actions (one each to a controller button).  You then pick those actions and they use so much of a bar.  If that bar goes empty, you can switch over to another "class" which has its own bar.  It's all real time.

Blarg watched lots of videos, know the answer

And when you are 'empty' on that bar it makes this obnoxious honking sound.  You'll hear it. A lot.
