15922  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PR-PC] First title from Bungie Founder's New Studio on: August 31, 2004, 02:02:41 PM
Looks like Alexander Seropian (founder of Bungie) is pushing forward with his company "Wideload Games, Inc." and has picked Aspyr Media as his publisher.  Might we see a RTS of Myth-like proportions?  We can only hope...

Aspyr Media Announces Strategic Relationship to Publish First Title from Wideload Games; Worldwide Agreement to Publish Game from Former Bungie Founder

AUSTIN, Texas-Aug. 31, 2004--Aspyr Media, Inc., an entertainment publisher delivering fun in the form of games, music and DVDs, today announced it has signed an exclusive worldwide publishing agreement with Wideload Games, Inc. (, to publish its premiere title. Wideload is the new game development studio founded by Alexander Seropian, industry veteran and founder of Bungie Studios of Halo, Myth and Marathon fame. This upcoming action game, based on an original intellectual property and powered by the Halo(TM) game engine, will be published worldwide in 2005.

"Topping our 'why we want to work with Aspyr list' is their strong reputation of working with top-name companies and staying true to the creator's vision. This was very appealing to us," said Seropian. "We've known this team for many years and have always been impressed by the creative freedom and the flexibility afforded to their development and content partners. We are going to have a great time playing mad scientists in our lab and then handing off our first born to Aspyr. Their drive and desire to focus on this product and see it succeed matches our own."

"Wideload has an incredibly talented team with a proven track record of delivering original games that have sold in the millions. They're a great team, we're a great team, and together we're a powerful combination," said Michael Rogers, president of Aspyr. "We've padded our walls and removed all sharp objects from our offices, so we can be ready for the craziness that Wideload will deliver."

Aspyr will work closely with Wideload to make sure that the vision and feel of the game is reflected in all aspects of bringing this title to market. Furthermore, Aspyr is leveraging its music and film ties to create a campaign that is just as twisted and off the wall as the game itself. Stay tuned (and we mean tuned) for some interesting developments.

Wideload is dedicated to making hit video and computer games by injecting a unique blend of their visionary development model, creative gameplay and oddball humor into the computer and video games industry. Wideload brings together some of the brightest talents in the game industry including several former senior Bungie programmers, artists and designers.

Computer and video game fans can check out for game updates and sign up to get more information as it becomes available.

Evil Genius™ Demo Available Now!

Gamers Worldwide Can Now Discover How Evil They Really Are

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 30, 2004) – Vivendi Universal Games announced today that a demo for the PC strategy/simulation game Evil Genius is now available.  The demo can be downloaded direct from the company at http://  Evil Genius will ship to retail stores in the United States on September 28th.

The Evil Genius demo is an exciting introduction to Elixir Studios' world domination simulation. All of the basic principles of being an evil megalomaniac are available to be mastered.  Gamers can build a secure underground base complete with armories, barracks, and all-important freezer rooms. They’ll train an awesome army of brutal mercenaries armed to the teeth and prepare to repel the Forces of Justice who've caught wind of their whereabouts. They’ll extract information about their plans by capturing and interrogating prisoners, and use their powerful henchmen to defeat the martial arts legend and super agent, Jet Chan, in a final chaotic showdown.

More information about Evil Genius can be found at the official website:

In Evil Genius gamers assume the role of a wicked mastermind bent on achieving global domination through the construction of the ultimate doomsday device.  A tongue-in-cheek take on the 60's spy thriller genre, Evil Genius offers the chance to be the villain and control a secret island fortress complete with powerful (and strangely dressed) henchmen, mindlessly loyal minions and a wide range of hilarious gizmos.

All the everyday tasks of the megalomaniac are available to experience as players build a secret base, train minions, gain infamy and notoriety by completing daring missions, toy with the forces of justice by setting clever traps, torture captives with ingenious devices, and develop evil super weapons to complete a nefarious master plan.

15931  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Board + Processor = Happy Gaming Goodness? on: August 28, 2004, 02:01:02 AM
Well, thanks to Fry's having only open boxes to select from for Asus and Abit, I'm now running a Gigabyte board.   I fought like hell with this board to get it up and running as I kept getting error after error and drops to BSOD during XP install.  So out of pure anger and frustration I did the only thing I could in this situation...I called Gigabyte.  Seems that my SATA drives need me to find a working system and make floppys to install (a la SCSI) prior to XP install.  I also cannot use my Western Digital without removing the jumper from it and putting it on its own chain.  Thankfully this board supports 12 drives total, so its looking stable and VERY solid at this point.  XP boots so fast that the XP boot logo appears but never shows the blue bar, its already gone before that thing can move.  Ahhhh....can't wait to finish all my installs and upgrades, its gonna be beautiful!

Thanks to everyone for help selecting the board and processor, I'm not dissapointed.

15933  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Wanna get into the WoW Beta? on: August 28, 2004, 01:54:45 AM
Oh I wouldn't say that.  Yes, it is only 7 days but you can do a lot in that time to get the flavor of the game.  As for the server performance, the issues that I've seen in the last few patches have never really been server performance related.  You don't see people warping around or running in place like you do in EQ and the like.  They have done their homework...

FilePlanet to exclusively provide stress-test files to 100,000+ players

IRVINE, Calif. – August 26, 2004 – Blizzard Entertainment® today announced plans to collaborate with FilePlanet on Blizzard’s upcoming World of WarcraftTM stress test beta. This 7-day test will help Blizzard optimize World of Warcraft to deliver the best online-gaming experience possible when it launches later this year. Gamers in North America will have the opportunity to become one of over 100,000 people chosen to participate in the stress test and try out World of Warcraft before its release.

Sign-ups for the World of Warcraft stress test beta are scheduled to take place exclusively on the FilePlanet Web site ( Additional information regarding the start date of the sign-ups and the start of the stress test beta will be released on the FilePlanet Web site in the days ahead. Anyone in North America can apply—one submission per person—and selected testers will be notified by FilePlanet and receive further instructions after completing the sign-up process.

“We’re pleased to be working closely with FilePlanet to conduct this stress test for World of Warcraft,” stated Paul Sams, senior vice president of business operations at Blizzard Entertainment. “They have extensive experience delivering files to tens of thousands of people daily, and they share Blizzard’s high standards for quality and information security.”

Stress-test participants will be able to play the same content that is currently being tested by World of Warcraft’s closed-beta testers, but the stress test beta will take place on separate servers in order to avoid unbalancing the closed beta test. Blizzard will also be conducting an open beta test, in which everyone is free to participate, in the months ahead.

World of Warcraft is Blizzard Entertainment’s highly anticipated massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the award-winning Warcraft® universe. Players assume the roles of legendary heroes as they explore the game’s diverse cities and wilds, revisiting famous battlefields and questing through vast expanses of uncharted territory. 15941  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / My morning....ehhh....not so good. on: August 26, 2004, 04:05:32 PM
So this is not my morning.  On my way to work this morning I love-tapped a guy on a bike.  I was trying to round the corner, he waved me on and then darted out in front of me from the sidewalk.  No damage to my car, no damage to his bike.  So whats his natural reaction?  He starts swinging punches at me!  So I'm trying not to have to fight this guy, I'm blocking what he is throwing and its just making him more mad.  Finally he gets one shot in and hits me in the damned ear.  Instant Fight Club moment..."Why the EAR?!"  So I shoulder lock him and he keeps fighting so I threw him to the pavement.  He gets back up and I told him he needs to stop before I hurt him.  He lunges at me again and gets to meet Mr. Pavement again.  He gets back up and rages towards me again and I put him to the pavement for a third time.  At this point the cops roll up and send us to our seperate corners.  The cops came over and inspected my hands to see if it was true that I hadn't hit him. (thankfully there was a witness)  So the end result?  I get to pay the city 185 bucks (failure to yield ticket) and he got a free ride in the patrol car with a big stack of tickets.   Apparently you can add "Bike Rage" to the list of Road Rage categories.

New York - August 24, 2004 - Global Star Software, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:  TTWO), and Firefly Studios are pleased to announce Stronghold 2, the sequel to the award-winning titles Stronghold and Stronghold: Crusader. The Stronghold franchise has sold over 1.5 million units worldwide.

Due to be released for PC in early 2005, the castle-sim and siege-warfare RTS game Stronghold 2 will bring the series to life in glorious 3D. Stronghold 2 will also offer players a "castle-life" campaign, enhanced multiplayer capability and a new, innovative and exciting single player campaign that will be revealed in the months ahead.

"The first Stronghold game pioneered a genre by combining the elements of simulation games and combat strategy into a single unique experience," said Christoph Hartmann, Senior Vice President of Publishing at Global Star. "Now we are thrilled to bring Stronghold 2 to the market, which will undoubtedly set the standard as Firefly Studios has taken its already highly regarded gameplay and pushed it beyond anyone's expectations with new and innovative features.  We are confident that Stronghold 2 will captivate gamers in 2005."

"We decided to steer away from the typical RTS mold when we developed the original Stronghold," said Simon Bradbury, Director at Firefly Studios.  "Now, with a 3D engine that can render tens of thousands of animated characters on-screen simultaneously, we can explore the intricacies of castle-life and the machinations of siege-warfare like never before in Stronghold 2. Once again we will take the Stronghold franchise into new and exciting territory."

My problem with Mr. M's games are typically that they are one-trick ponies.  You can train your creature....and now I'm taking it away from you.  Now you have it back, but you've probably gotten bored by now.  Have fun!

I'm hoping that Fable is not all surface flash like B&W seemed to be for me.  If the good option and the bad option the same eventual outcome I'll be disappointed.  If everything you do truly does culminate in a different experience with a different ending (which I've heard time and time again that it does) then it'll be a knock-your-socks-off title.  In just a little bit we will know for sure...
