15721  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Halo 2 Pre-Orders Reach 1 Million on: October 06, 2004, 10:25:12 PM
EXACTLY.  You also have to look at how much of those presales are paid in full and how much are 10.00 pre-sales.   EB wins out big time as they get to more tightly control their inventory as well.  (Not like this one is going to burn them to have extras on the shelf)

That said, the second they sell em to EB or whomever they get paid.

Yowza!  That is crazy!  Think about this:

Average Gross Profit Margin on a 50.00 game is 8-10 bucks, we'll go on the top end for calculations:

10 * 1,000,000 = 10 million dollars profit on pre-orders alone.  CRAAAZY!

15728  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Stomp] Blizzard Entertainment Wins Judgment in BnetD Case on: October 05, 2004, 05:23:24 PM
Looks like the free BattleNet servers are coming to an end.  Good riddance I say...Blizzard does a fantastic job with their servers, the only reason I can see to run your own is to cheat or pirate.  Neither of which pays to develop the next title.

Blizzard Entertainment Wins Summary Judgment in BnetD Case

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 4, 2004--A federal district court in St. Louis has found that members of the BnetD project violated Blizzard Entertainment(R)'s End User License Agreements (EULAs) and Battle.net(R) Terms of Use (TOU), as well as the provision of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that prohibits the circumvention of anti-piracy technology and trafficking in such technology.

"We consider this ruling to be a major victory against software piracy," stated Mike Morhaime, president and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment. "By ruling in our favor on every count, the court is sending a clear message that creating unauthorized servers which emulate Blizzard's Battle.net servers is without question illegal. We have worked hard to provide gamers with a free, safe, secure, reliable environment on Battle.net, and this ruling is a strong validation that we are justified in protecting and ensuring the integrity of our game service."

Granting Blizzard Entertainment's motion for summary judgment on all counts, Judge Charles Shaw ruled that the defendants were bound to the terms of Blizzard's EULAs and Battle.net TOUs, and that by reverse engineering Blizzard software, creating servers that emulated Battle.net, and providing matchmaking services for users of Blizzard software, they were in violation of those terms. Furthermore, Judge Shaw held that because the BnetD servers created a functional alternative to Battle.net and were used to bypass Blizzard's anti-piracy technology, "the defendants' actions constitute a circumvention of copyright under the DMCA."

This judgment upholds Blizzard Entertainment's End User License Agreements and Battle.net Terms of Use as legally binding documents that are legally enforceable. In addition, the judgment enjoins others who distribute BnetD or act in concert with the BnetD members from creating and providing access to unauthorized servers that emulate Blizzard's own servers for the purpose of playing legal or illegal copies of Blizzard games as against the law.

Best known for their series Warcraft(R), StarCraft(R) and Diablo(R), Blizzard Entertainment (www.blizzard.com, a division of Vivendi Universal Games) is a premier developer and publisher of entertainment software renowned for creating many of the industry's most critically acclaimed games. Auctions....the basis of a player-run economy.

___________________________________________________

MMOG HORIZONS: EMPIRE OF ISTARIA ANNOUNCES START OF IN-GAME VIRTUAL PROPERTY AUCTIONS.

September 30, 2004  MESA, Ariz. – Artifact Entertainment, the developers of Horizons: Empire of Istaria today announced the commencement of in-game property auctions for subscribers. Horizons, a massively multiplayer on-line game (MMOG), allows subscriber characters to bid on over 1770 available plots of in-game land. Once the auction is complete, the plot owner has the opportunity to build, or contract other players to build, personal houses, and workable structures ranging from a blacksmith shop to a jewelry center, to storage silo on that property.

Groups of players with similar interests who have banded together as a Guild may also pool their resources to purchase a master Guild plot. When the associated Guild house is complete, over 900 other Guild Plots are then available to guild members for purchase and development.

Artifact Entertainment’s CEO, David Bowman says, “In Horizons, crafting is an integral part of community building and the player developed economy. The Istarian Auction was necessary after our shard consolidation and provides a well-rounded and equitable solution for many players who previously owned property.” Bowman continued, “Right now Horizons has 20 trade and craft schools a player can join. Our crafting system is well known to be intricate, specialized and fun. Increasing the number of available structures a plot owner can develop on their property continues our tradition of this robust crafting system.”

Istarian property is available in many different sizes. Depending on the size of the plot a player can construct a single building or, on larger plots, develop many buildings that provide different benefits to the player and their community.

Player built structures also feature new functionality. “Previously, player built personal residences were simply meeting areas, now these homes can be used as inventory storage for the many items a player accumulates through ordinary game play.” stated Mr. Bowman.  “If a character chooses to create the structure themselves they earn crafting experience points in that crafting school; this is another reward and incentive for players to experience all that Horizons has to offer. This plot auction is the first of its kind in a massively multiplayer fantasy world; it adds a new level of excitement to the game and allows players to form a strategy to get the plot they want. The process for all 1,770+ plots will take about 10 days to complete. To accommodate this auction we have added technology and functionality to the game that can be used again and again.” said Bowman.

1.) There will never be pop up/under/anywhere ads of any sort.
2.) The ads will never have sound
3.) I will try to run the site without them, but I ask that you click them now and again as it keeps the lights on at CG when we do run them.
4.) Advertisements = improvements.  I re-invest the vast majority of any money we make directly back into the site in the form of improvements for you.

I just wanted to make those items clear before we move forward.  Don't worry...there won't be any McGriddle madness on the site, you have my word. slywink
