But his post was a seriously unwarranted cheap shot. I tried to be PC yesterday in describing why this community isn't for me. The people gravitating here are largely (but certainly not solely) the group that acting like complete ******** when the R&P forum split on GG. That's not any community that I want to be a part of anymore.

Want to hear the most hilarious part?  I have no idea what you are talking about.  I didn't know that there was a big rift until long after it had happened.  All this mass gravitation towards here is largely imagined...

Its not that I'm out of touch, its just that our growth numbers don't show some sort of spike like you describe.

Ok here's the situation. I want to re-clarify our stance. Nobody is censoring anyone here.  A question like "Hey did you vote today?" is fine.  Something like "Did you see that piece on global warming?" is fine.  Something like "Hey, I think Kerry is a baby killing psycho, and only a cock-swilling psycho would vote for him!" is not fine.  Each thread will be evaluated on an individual basis but we are not going to be dedicating a forum to it.  We are not going to be encouraging political discussion here because, as I've explained before, it doesn't fit what we do here.  We are a gaming site.  GONE GOLD was a gaming site.   You wanna talk about the latest debate?  Do so with a bit of caution in the off topic forum and label it CLEARLY with [P] Debate in Tempe.  The second I think we have gotten into some assinine immature non-productive bullshitery I'll lock the thread.

It has to do with the fact that CG staff is now insulting the GG mods, which is totally classless.
Ok stop.  Just stop right there.  Mitch made a comment and prefaced it that this was his own commentary.  While I recognize that he is staff, he did make this clear that he he didn't represent the staff in this.  Don't throw that blanket on all of us.

Obviously, to you, this is irrelevant, but to people like me, and many others, its a bit of a slap in the face, because I dont think our wishes were REALLY considered, nor do I believe that in the long run, we were really given a chance here.
Obviously you haven't paid too much attention to the many things that we have done to this site to make it better for all invovled.  I care deeply for the community, and I won't have you or anyone else slander that jblank.  The whole reason why I waited this long was to weigh the tons of email and private messages I received.  I looked at the angles and I looked at the costs and benifits.  Don't say that I don't care...I haven't slept more than a few hours in days because I've dedicated it all to this site and the recent transitions.

15611  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / R&P Decision on: October 12, 2004, 07:15:02 PM
All,

We promised that we'd have a final decision on the fate of a R&P forum here at ConsoleGold today, and here is our decision for better or worse.

When we first launched our own forums, we had decided against launching our own R&P forum for many reasons (not the least of which was the fact that Gone Gold already had their own forum dedicated for that purpose). With the unfortunate loss of Gone Gold, we wanted to do what we could to help out the community. Fortunately for us, most of the things that we've needed to do to support the GG refugees were already in our long range plans. So most of the things that we've done over the last few days has really just been speeding up our timelines rather than causing us to change our vision.

With that being said, we did listen to all of the requests for an R&P forum here at CG and wanted to give it a lot of careful consideration.

Quite simply, we just don't see it fitting into our long range plans of building a great place for gamers on the web.

This was a very hard decision to make, and I know it will be dissapointing to some of you and for that I apologize. We understand that some of you may leave because of this decision (just as some have said they will stay because of it), but we needed to remain true to our vision. Gone Gold was truly something special - the likes of which would be impossible to ever re-create. Rich was the heart of Gone Gold, and it was his vision and love for the community that really built Gone Gold into the place it was.

Being children of that vision, we obviously loved everything that Rich had done with Gone Gold, and have strived to allow that same heart and his influence affect everything that we do here as well, but we're not Rich and we recognize that there are just some things that could never work here because of that.

Comments in here please.

*edit*  It's not nice to say comments in here and then make it an announcement where people can't comment. slywink  Sorry.

** Edit ** Apparently I was unclear.  Here is a paste in from later in the conversation -

A lot of these ideas were in my head already.  The timetables just got spun up considerably faster thanks to my pretty sister. smile

I do have a big concern though.  I don't want to have just a forum here.  There is a lot of great content to be had on that front page and in the Gold Guide.  The Gold Guide was awesome on GG and a resource that was unrivaled for a very long time.  We could make something even more grand with Eldon's tools and the communities support.

As for people feeling like refugees...you can stop feeling like that now.  With all the cards apparently on the table, and with us making the modifications we are now, you are now members.

One little comment: I run my rig at 1152x864, and the first topic starts more than halfway down the page! Add in the sticky threads, and maybe 35-40% of the page is actually useful content. That's pretty ridiculous. Maybe a scaling of the big 'CG' logo is in order. Way too much wasted or underused space, IMO
Agreed.  On it.

What do you guys think of this....now this is just a brainstorm so this isn't well thought out or in any way condoned or green-lit.

What if we hosted the GG forums as an archive?  We lock that shite software down and just make it a searchable archive so the data isn't lost.  If somebody has a wild hair they could move the data, but it'd be accessable if we could get ahold of the data.

Here is the hitch.  Its 30GB.  We'd need someplace to host it and $$ to pay the cost for access.  If those are donated, its free.  If not, we'll have to beat the support drum.  I'm listening....
15631  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / EVERYONE READ PLEASE on: October 12, 2004, 02:02:22 AM
Ok, now that I've had a few hours to think about this.  There are some things I want to say, and some things I want to ask.

Things I want to say:
1.) Thanks to everyone for respecting the rules. (well, except for the jacktards, but I've dispatched them easily enough)  We really have had a very quiet moderation scene until recently...

2.) Console Gold is Console Gold.  That means that we aren't going to rip up the floorboards and become something we are not.  We'll open new forums, we'll make concessions, we'll expand.  We will bring on new staff and cover PC gaming with PC reviews, PC news, with seperated PC forums and adapt to the needs of the community, but at the end of the day, we are still Console Gold.

3.) Moderation, Moderators, And Everything in Moderation:  There have been a deluge of emails that have gone unanswered in my email box about bringing in Gone Gold moderators to run things at CG.  I assure you that every mod at CG is hand-picked by my senior staff and this would include any ex-GG mods.  There won't be an open blanket shift from one to the other though.  You've probably also noticed that I'm a more no-nonsense moderator.  I'm of very low tolerance for things like pictures of Tubgirl or Goatse, so expect a permanent vacation on your first offense for things like that.  I'll be stern, but fair.

Things I want to ask:
1.) What do you want out of Console Gold?  What can we do to faciliate you? (within reason)

2.) What do you want resserected out of Gone Gold?  What worked?  What didn't?

3.) Can I count on your support with the ads?  I don't have a lot but they support the site. (and the massive increase in traffic)

4.) If we invest a ton of time, will everyone up and leave?  There was a mass influx of people and with splinter forums opening up there are a lot of ways out.  I'm loathe to invest my staff's time to build this place into what you want if everyone will say thank you and leave.  I'm not looking for a membership oath, but some of my staff are getting a vibe that folks might be about to jump ship off CG again.

Here are the plans for the short, medium/long term:

Short Term:
By the time you read this, I'll have set up (or will be in the process of doing so) the forums into a more PC friendly environment.  This is to meet the needs of our new PC friends.  I will have also setup a few new forums that will give you a familiar feeling as well.  We will begin reviewing PC titles in the forums and making infrastructure changes to facilitate PC reviews, previews, interviews, and so forth which leads into the medium and long term plans.

Medium Term/Long Term:
We will setup a system by which you can filter the news.  You will be able to flush out any console related or pc related news based on some simple selections to make your news reading an easier to digest format.  We will also have begun work on reviving the PC Gold Guide but in a fashion similar to what we do at Console Gold.  While there is no way it would ever be as inclusive (PC games go HOW far back?!) we will be working towards that lofty goal.  Community support will be paramount here and we will try to facilitate this by making a system whereby you can enter in submissions to make our guide more complete.

Given the information contained in the recent post from RPGHero from Rich's brother, it seems like the waiting has come to an end.  I'll move forward with this until I hear otherwise.  It seems like what is best for the community.  Please drop your comments in here.  Thank you.

15633  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PC-PR] Men of Valor™ for PC Goes Gold! on: October 11, 2004, 07:07:55 PM
LOS ANGELES, CA (October 11, 2004) – Vivendi Universal Games and 2015 Inc. announced today that the PC version of their upcoming first-person action game Men of Valor has gone gold and will ship to retail stores in the United States on October 26th.  The game will be released on the Xbox video game system from Microsoft on October 19th.  A Macintosh operating system version will be published by Aspyr Media, Inc.

A multi-player demo and more information about Men of Valor can be found on the official website at http://www.menofvalorgame.com/.

Men of Valor is an historical action experience that portrays infantry combat during the Vietnam War. Combining the latest Unreal technology with the gameplay expertise of 2015 (developers of the award-winning Medal of Honor: Allied Assault), the game immerses the player in the humid jungles of Southeast Asia in the most controversial conflict of the modern era.

Men of Valor follows an African-American Marine through the early stages of the conflict in Vietnam to the Tet Offensive. Touching on the some of the most familiar scenes of the war as they exist in the popular imagination, the player guides his group of fellow soldiers through the hardship and confusion of the battlefield, bonding with them as they do their duty for their country with the heroism and valor typical of the American soldier, but unsung during the turbulent times.

As we move at a quick pace to augment our existing internal network with high speed internet connections, content filtering has become a hot topic again.  Over the past week, we have been using a passive content filter system to log how our associates use the Internet / World Wide Web in their normal day to day business lives.  Needless to say, the results were disappointing.

Effective immediately, this content filtering system has been activated to block inappropriate content.  Our goal is to have a safe, harmonious and professional work environment where there are minimal distractions from work.  As friendly a place as this is and we want it to continue to be, it is also expected that our associates will exhibit high standards of professional conduct.  This decision will help us in that regard.

Also, if you need more information about Internet access and electronic communications, please consult section 8.3 of the Cable One Associate Handbook.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to send me an email or give me a call.  Thanks.

Thankfully its aimed at everyone, but yowza!
