15441  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [pic] HK47 from KoToR 2 on: November 19, 2004, 12:23:50 PM
Postulation: Perhaps one of the other moderators moved it as this shot is from the Xbox version, meatbag?

HK is my favorite character as well.  I don't know who moved this either, but if you guys want it in the other forum it can go right back.

15443  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden IV? on: November 18, 2004, 03:26:58 PM
I loved Suikoden III, I couldn't put it down until I found every character.  I put 110 hours into the game!  Did it have problems, sure.  I dunno, I just was pulled in.  As they say, your mileage may vary.  I'll have to get ahold of this Kitsune character....

Shalebridge Cradle from Thief 3

I'm throwing my hat into that ring as well.  I've not made it to Ravenholm yet, but it'd be hard pressed to get past the Cradle.  That said, I think Ocean View in Vampire is pretty damned solid as well.  If it were more confined it'd be even better (or worse, take your pick).

Does the game "require" fast twitch combat?

You know, that is a good way of putting it.  This is pretty low twitch combat.  The combat here is a little slower paced.  You pick your skills (celerity, blood rage, etc.) and you engage in combat.  You do a little damage, they do a little damage.  Its not like Halo 2 is or what I imagine HL2 will be (haven't gotten it yet) where combat is over very quickly.  Its a bit slower paced than that and the enemies (and you) can take a bit of a beating before they go down.

P.S. "Stars" for reviews are weak IMHO.  Quantify your reviews so they mean something.

Its been pretty quiet on Suikoden IV.  Anyone hearing anything? Its one of my 'high anticipation' titles, but I can't read Japanese yet so imports are out of the question. :/

Are firearms pretty much useless compared to claws/fists/melee weapons?

Oh, I wouldn't say useless by any stretch.  Realize that you are so poor that you can't even pay attentionwhen you start, so the best you can pick up is a shoddy revolver.  As you work your way through the game and take side missions (or mugging people) you earn money and can buy better weapons, when you find the right contacts. Your weapons will improve as you go, but you'll find that the claws are your best weapon for a good while.

As for a selection of firearms, its not a ton wide selection of weapons to start, but it expands as you move through the game.  I don't have a final number for you though.

I know it's an rpg, but it sounds pretty open-ended.
Can you run around the city and do what you want?
I don't want to run out and buy it if you're stuck to a story the entire time.
I think it would be a lot more interesting just exploring the city.

You can explore the city all you like and there are a ton of side missions that are complely voluntary and can be accomplished in any order, or you can skip em alltogether if that's your will.

How are the Nosferatu implemented? The previews say that you'll break the Masquerade if you're seen by regular people... how challenging is this to deal with, and do you know if you can't do certain quests because of it?

Crap, I knew I forgot something in my review.  I'll amend this in -

The Nosferatu are difficult to play as they cannot roam freely among the humans.  They have to rely on invisibility and sewers/shadows to not break The Masquerade.  On top of that, you also have an additional positional 'radar' system that will tell you when people are near so you can avoid them.

As for not being able to accomplish certain quests, there are a few that you have to be out in the open for, but they get quests that you wouldn't otherwise get, so it balances.

In order to get as much outta the game as possible, would you recommend getting the strategy guide to find all the hidden quests, or are things in the hubs small enough that with enough exploration, I can find anything the game can offer?

Normally I'd say pass on the strategy guides but this game has so much going on that I plan on picking one up.  The hubs aren't really that small.  Santa Monica isn't very big, but its the beginning area.  As you unlock more quests through talking to the right people or accomplishing goals it expands pretty quickly.  Downtown is pretty big and it only gets bigger from there.

Due to Troika's history with huge freaking bugs I think it is fair to ask....did you encounter any?

I mentioned a few in the review itself.  Nothing showstopper, but there are some graphic and AI glitches and balance issues that crop up.

That is correct, 60 hours is what Q&A is taking to run through the primary plot thread and they know where to go.  This game is not short by any stretch.

I realize that there are many different ways to go about tasks, but how is the balance between Combat and Roleplay, if I was to play a more physical character? I'd just like to know if you need to "FedEx" for 30 minutes to get to a 30 second fight.

Well, the game is geared primarily towards RPG it seems, but you can certainly brute force and intimidate your way through the game.  I won't spoil it for you, but you end up in a Sabbat warehouse that you have to blow up.  This mission was absolutely action oriented and there was no way to 'silver-tongue' your way out of it.  You better get good with stealth, claws, or my choice - the shotgun - really really quick.
By the way, don't think that the missions are all FedEx, they aren't by any stretch.  The early ones start out that way so you can learn about the area you are in, but those fade away pretty quick. The missions I'm in are fairly involved, or look simple then become very involved.

How big is the world? I keep seeing the term 'Hub' and for some reason it makes me think of tiny zones that you could run across in 2 minutes with lots of loading between them all.

The world is pretty big.  Each hub has about 15 buildings that you can enter if you have the right gear (lockpick, hacking, a key, etc.) or you are supposed to be there.  In the beginning there are a lot of places that you'll just have to come back to later.  As you gain reasons to leave Santa Monica and go to Downtown LA you can catch a cab and travel freely between them. (or use the sewers if you prefer or if you are Nosferatu)  There isn't much loading outside, if at all (one area had one side-zone that had to load briefly) but entering buildings is a mandatory few-second load.  Its very abbreviated and the game is compelling enough to keep me from noticing too much.  Of course, your mileage may vary.

It 'ships' today but most stores already have it.  So they will 'ship' it from the back room to the shelf.  smile

So I played a bit this weekend, a few times with the clan, and realized that I need more practice.  My skill varies from way on top to dead dead DEAD last.  I'm looking forward to getting together with you guys and getting an all CG game going.  I also gotta log some time in the single player to get some practice in there too so I don't get my ass handed to me so much.

But Joe Customer shouldn't have to browse Gamespy and PlanetHalfLife to make sure that a game he *buys* in a *store* in a *box* freakin' works when he takes it home. That's BS. It's not as much BS as world hunger or terrorism, but it's still BS.

I'm on this bandwagon as well.  I think its crazy that they are dragging this out any longer now that their management of the release has been botched all to shit and back.  It was a nice plan VU, now let it go and let us play already.  The only thing that waiting does is frustrate consumers.

That said, I've got more than enough to play to bother with HL2 right now.  A few more days will let me knock out a few more reviews before HL2 hits the 'shelves' so to speak.

Well....I've got a plan. slywink  I'm going to better coordinate the next one and see if we can get a bit more advertising.  Something like a FNF with us and Evil Avatar's crew or something.  I'm also inviting a local LAN party crew that Josh, one of our new staff members, plays with.  If we can get a regular game going that'd be cool and I'd definately support it.
