I submitted the flashing ads to be removed this morning as they appear to be in this batch of ads as well.  Just FYI.

This was more from the other side of the coin, once I throw Eldergamer (who absolutely was Vagabond, despite his attempts to hide himself) out the door he stays gone.   That said, you guys have made some good points, we'll leave things as it is and just keep vigilant.   smile
15404  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Registration Method on: January 27, 2005, 09:44:37 PM
Should we change our methods of Registration acceptance?  Quarter To Three doesn't have people like Bplotkin or his twin Vagabond (or Eldergamer if you like) popping up on the radar as they require a moderator to approve their entry into the board.  What do you think?  Should we change the board to require that extra step as long as our mods are quick to get it done?
15405  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Resident Evil 4 Impressions on: January 27, 2005, 02:45:21 PM
The learning phase is over.  Re-editing a post that I edited is a no-no and he damned well knows that.  He's banned and I'd have to have a fairly compelling reason to let him back in the door.  When my staff has to spend 98% of their moderation energy on him and 2% on everyone else, well...seems like simple math to me.

Now, back to the impressions already in progress. slywink

15407  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Martial arts on: January 26, 2005, 05:57:22 PM
He said he currently is the only 10 dan even in Japan, also said something about it being bestowed on him because he beat a 10 Dan in combat, if you did this wouldn't take any time.

Emphasis on 'he says'.  There is a lot to be said about instruction level, maturation, knowledge level, patience, ability, etc. etc. etc. that isn't measured in a single fight.  (based on the assumption that what he said is even true, which I sincerely doubt or if it is its probably a "Look I made my own martial art! I declare myself a 10th Dan...oops, I got beat" art)  Let me explain:

A 10th Dan that has earned his way there will have learned the humility of his art, knowing that there is power in his fists as well as his mind and heart.  There is power in knowing how to pass knowledge properly to other students in a safe manner.  There is power in understanding that, while some may not understand the value of Kata, you do - and they should do them just the same to build muscle, balance, and discipline.  You should understand how to run your business and to grow your art, not just in your own Dojang but to expand your art and allow new ideas and concepts to be integrated.  (i.e. we practice knife defence and gun defence differently now than we did 7-10 years ago, it has evolved)  They should understand the human mind as well as the human spirit and how to motivate both.

All that said, if I get the faster shot off and punch you in the neck and watch you choke out, has it proved I know any of those things?  No.  It proves I've either caught you off guard, maybe even just this once, and I capitolized on it, or that I have faster hand speed.  I know a lot of street punks with faster hand speed than me, doesn't make them better fighters or 'higher rank'.  If Muhammed Ali and Roy Jones Jr. squared off today, MA would lose in a heartbeat...does that make his years of knowledge and training somehow worthless?  Its foolish to think so.  The problem with these shows is that they seek out the showboats...the real martial artists are busy, practicing their martial arts in the unfortunate event that one day they just might need it.

15411  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Martial arts on: January 25, 2005, 05:04:32 PM

You said it all right there my friend.

I've trained with Grandmaster Lee in Florida.  I just can't condone that chain as a martial art.  They have a camo belt and were guaranteeing people their blackbelt if they signed a 1 year contract.  Everything else in the conversation aside, there is no way to justify that.   That style is a damned sham...I have their black belt instructor manuals (they tried to recruit me over from Tang Soo Do) should see the nonsense in this thing.  Its embarrasing.  I did enjoy destroying their fighters though, especially ones 4 and 5 ranks above me. smile

I'll just punch a hole in this theory right now - this guy was a 10th Dan in karate and a 9th Dan in Judo?  That's impossible unless he is part of the McBlackbelt system.  You are required to spend 1 year as a 1st Dan, 2 years as a 2nd, 3 years as a 3rd, and so on and so forth.  That is 55 years not even counting the time it takes to GET your blackbelt.  To do it twice?  Entirely impossible.

As for fighting boxers, I have - they lose just as quick as street fighters, you just have to know where to hit them.  Don't confuse the silly slap-boxing that passes for martial arts on TV with a real traditional martial art.  Same thing with grapplers...they lose just as quick, as they are fumbling with their locks, I'm working on tearing out their eyes.

Katas are not meant for combat.  Only an idiot would associate them to combat, and The Karate Kid was the perpetrator of that foolish notion.   They are meant to teach you balance, control, and muscle memory.  Are you going to tell me those things aren't important to combat?

As for will and big movements...again...traditional martial arts are not flashy and don't have big arching movements.  If its life or death for me, I'm looking to incapacitate my opponent in one or two strikes, just the same as if I was firing a gun.  Will isn't a problem.   Don't think that having a gun suddenly makes you Mr. Willpower either, I saw that firsthand in the military with some of the mouthy paper-soldiers who couldn't cut it when it counted.

You have my word, I'll write up a short take after I put a few hours in.  I'm hoping to have it today. The full review will come later after I've put some serious time into the game....

I'm ok if its 3 out of 5 stars, but you can't judge that by the back of the box and 15 minutes of gameplay....

15438  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden IV Review... on: January 14, 2005, 01:53:17 PM
Hey all,

I'll be doing the review on Suikoden IV but rather than rushing something out the door as quickly as possible and giving an incomplete picture of the game, I was thinking of putting at least 40-50 hours into the game first.  That'd be roughly half from what I hear.  I'd like to hear what you think...for incredibly long RPG titles like this, what do you think about delaying reviews to ensure a  more accurate review?  Or do you think they are any more accurate if they are delayed?
