121  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Ender's Game on: February 17, 2014, 07:36:45 PM
My wife, mother, and I went to the theater and saw this.   We all enjoyed it, but none of us had read the book.  Somebody was nice enough to spoil the goddamned thing for me before hand (just like Harry Potter!  Awesome!) but I thought it was decent.   They certainly spent the dollars on the space sim sections!  I just wonder if they'll tackle any of the other books.  When I finish up Game of Thrones, Ender is next on my list.

Actually, I take that back.  The reason is that people can make a big deal out of shaking it.

I didn't notice a hand switch except for when they first show him to himself.. but that was a mirror...

I liked Sam Jackson, but his character looked..off....

Spoiler for Hiden:
Michael Keaton's character seemed pretty good for most of it, but he seemed to change too quickly towards the ending..

Yea, I agree with you on Keaton.  They really did marginalize Chalkie's character ...er..I mean "Lewis".  Not a lot of screentime to what was a pretty integral character last time.

I quit soda cold turkey.   I'm drinking about 100oz of water (large 'workout' bottle 3x a day for straight water) and then I drink the Costco flavored 0 carb waters (Talking Rain).  Takes care of the sweet tooth craving for soda, but not bad for me.  If I taste soda now it's like putting a battery on my tongue.

Ugh, 'free to play' on a feature list continues to throw up gigantic red flags for me.  Even the "but you can try it for free to see if you like it!" angle doesn't work for me, because I'd find it supremely annoying if I did like it only to run into a paywall scheme I can't stand.
A lot of free to play stuff on the PC is quite good.   League of Legends, Smite, Dota2, Warframe, and Loadout all spring to mind.
Yup, that's why I said red flags rather than an outright disqualification.  But like with Smite, I was supremely happy to be able to pay the $30 forever-hero unlock and make it so I bought the whole game rather than having to pay piecemeal as I go.

100% this.  "I recognize that I like your game, developer person.   Please allow me to purchase it and then not be bothered ever again.  Thank you!"

So I did the 'everybody' thing and decided to get myself in great shape this year.  Better than that, I set in motion.   I lift 4x a week with a trainer HIIT style (high intensity intervals, no breaks, 60 minutes) and then I've been using Xbox Fitness 2-3 days a week for cardio for 50 minutes each session.   Since Jan 1st I've lost 12.5lbs and I'm lifting FAR more than I ever thought I could.  (e.g. seated dumbell shoulder press with 90lbs in each arm)  I'm gonna keep going on this track and see where it leads me, but so far so good.

Lol, you are?  nifty!   You have to keep track of which gate is open and when.  For instance, to get the the Warrens (aka slums) they are only open between midnight and 6am.  After that they close the doors and you can't get there until the next day.  There are only a handful of days to finish the game, so getting there to find a closed gate is just annoying.

It writes those times on the map.

True, but in most RPGs you could get there when you get there and that'd be just fine.  Go solving side quests, level up your characters, etc.  Now we are forced to say "Well, I only have an hour so I better run and be past that gate before it closes or I can't access that area.  Oh shit, but that means I can't do this other thing till tomorrow".  It's arbitrary and that's what bugs me.

Was it the whole first mission? I am concerned if missions can be finished in 17 minutes, but don't want to watch it and be spoiled... Hopefully, if it is the whole mission they get longer...

This was clearly a player who knew the map perfectly already, and if you look at the stats at the very end of the video, you'll see that he barely got any treasures or collectibles, and there was lots of room for improvement.

The video was promising, but what I'm really wondering about is what happens when you get spotted. If you can reliably fight your way out of trouble, much of the tension disappears.

From my hands-on time with it, if you get spotted you are going to get clubbed like a baby seal.  You could probably go toe-to-toe with one peon guard, but get a Sergeant or a pair of them and you're worm food.  I completely agree though - I'm Garrett, not Master Chief.

This is turn-based? Weird, every video I've ever seen of the game made it seem like an action spin off.

No, it isn't turn-based.  You can assign up to 4 actions (one each to a controller button).  You then pick those actions and they use so much of a bar.  If that bar goes empty, you can switch over to another "class" which has its own bar.  It's all real time.

Blarg watched lots of videos, know the answer

And when you are 'empty' on that bar it makes this obnoxious honking sound.  You'll hear it. A lot.

I'm very stoked for this one.  I am the rare person that actually really liked FFXIII and FFXIII-2 and I also enjoyed the demo for LR.  I like the switching between jobs mechanic a whole bunch and like this new combat system I played in the demo.  I knew this one wouldn't review very well and lots of people talk about how the franchise has declined, but I think the deal is that games as a medium has expanded so much and lots of people have moved past JRPGs.  Also, people hold onto the old games and how they worked and so when they try something new, it kind of upsets people.  I was okay with them taking away the exploration of typical FF games in XIII, though they did give you some more freedom about 40 hours into the game.  For me, I just like the general world of a FF game and am okay with them experimenting.  I like this 13 days until the end of the world mechanic they're putting into this one.

The end of the world stuff I liked, the damned Franklin Covey simulator of what gates are open, what vendors are present, etc. got old very fast.  I like the experimentation, but there is a point where a gameplay mechanic that is well meaning can become irritating.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_HEeHUmzjI&oref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DL_HEeHUmzjI&has_verified=1

Some of it seems decent, but other things make me scoff or laugh. Mostly its the violence approach I guess. One of the things that was unique to thief was the horror of being discovered. If the guards found you, you had to be lucky to escape with your life. Here, you can just kill everyone and be done with it it seems. That takes away a great deal of the tension. Imagine Cradle level where you could just slaugther everything - fun? Not really.

That's the trailer that Ron posted yesterday.

Its new to this page of the thread though.

No, it's not.

Like many, I've been nervous about this new Thief.  At first because it was going to be some futuristic thing, then because it was supposedly more action-oriented and most recently because of reports that it was all small spaces with little choice about where to go or what to do.

I have to say that trailer would only feel more like Thief if someone called Garrett a taffer.  That doesn't mean it'll be good, of course, but I'm certainly more interested.  That said, I do hope they maintain the rich world with its steampunky feel and the various factions (Order of the Hammer and whatnot), even if it's evolved in time slightly.

I'm a Thief purist.  I'll be making sure this game is "Thiefy" enough before you have to put down your cash.

So Ron, without giving anything away, were you ultimately able to beat those sadistically hard boss battles? It's one thing if those fights are hard, but if they at least are beatable in a mildly realistic way then I guess it's tolerable.

I was, but man...they always felt totally unfair.  I have 2000HP versus their 400,000HP?  And I can only heal with my 6 potions, but he has a skill that allows him to get all of his HP back once?  0_0   You really feel like the cards are stacked against you, and those fights take upwards of 15-20 minutes each.   It feels a little like a combination of luck, trial and error, and some laser-precision with blocking, and even then even the most minor of slips can kill you.   One boss had an attack that did just shy of 2k worth of damage if you missed the block.  No way to beat him when you have 1400HP (the staying in one area thing I mentioned), but if you do a bunch of side quest grinding and get up to 2k HP you can live through it, once.  smile     It's just odd to go from "this is kinda challenging" in a good way to "WTF?  How was I supposed to prepare for this?!" kind of moments.

If you look at the picture I posted up earlier, you can see that it's anything but. Both in terms of story, but also in terms of gameplay. The mere fact that the lead developer has stated that you can't have combat being as dangerous as it was in the originals shows how little they understand of the lure of the game. They also recently stated that the levels are small because they wanted the player to feel claustrophobic.... Oookay. Pretty much every Thief Level was a huge, huge area giving you tons of options and some of them pretty claustrophobic but more in terms of design, than just shrinking the levels.

After the delay they did a lot of rethinking.  They got rid of the XP system, they made combat shockingly lethal, etc.   I was with you - I was worried a little bit just before the original launch date.  I'm optimistic now - especially after that trailer.  Well done!

sadly, it seems that they just renamed XP into gold, seeing the latest screens from the game. Abilities now costs gold instead of xp.

Hence my caution.  I'm hopeful I'll have the build by next week to get a day 1 review out the door.  I'll let ya know, as a true fan of the series, what's what.

Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Batman, Resident Evil (so...many...remakes), Battlefield, Need for Speed, ALL sports titles, and I'm sure I've missed a few....

You look at these games and you have to wonder if some of these games would do better being every other year or even less frequent than that.  Hear me out.  If there was a Grand Theft Auto title every year, do you think that V would have done as well as it did?  Do you imagine you'd see as big a world with as much gameplay if GTA was forced to be shoved out the door every year?  I look at the fact that in the last 20 years of Madden it's only been twice that sales have "met expectations" and I wonder why expectations are so high (I don't have to be told anything 18 times...) and how the publisher expects the developer to iterate on Football every year.  The rules are kinda set, and you aren't going to mess with that, so what are you expecting to do other than introduce gimmicks and nonsense?  Call of Duty can iterate a story, but there are very few new 'concepts' in shooters.  What are your thoughts?

We have a tempurpedic bed with a topper.  It was 5k when it was new.  It's miserably hot during the summer here in Phx, and this tempurpedic material doesn't help with that.  If you go with a tempurpedic, get one with the cooling tech in it and some cooling sheets.

On the topic of the pricing thing - we got a mattress from one of those "random mattress R Us" in a shopping mall places for our spare room.  They had a king sized 500 dollar mattress for 200 bucks, including frame.  Why?  It got rubbed against during shipping and the logo was a little roughed up.  Entirely cosmetic and covered by a sheet.
