What's the word on Tapatalk integration?  I've come to appreciate it more than mobile site navigation.

It would be great to have better integration with the front page reviews and topic discussion, but it might make those non-specific discussions drop off from awareness.

What's missing from Tapatalk?  Should be working as intended...is that not the case?
2  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / The forums - how can we improve the experience? on: September 12, 2014, 10:05:12 PM
We've had plans to get the forums, the front page, G+, facebook, etc. all integrated to all comments from all locations feed the same.  It helps spur conversation.  I'm going to put finances on that to make it happen, with any luck, before the end of this year.  I wanted to ask though...

What else would you like to see?   What other wish-list items do you have?

For frame of reference, this is an example of the software we'll be moving towards and how it can be implemented:  http://www.shadowrun.com/forums/

I welcome your feedback and look forward to making some serious improvements across the entire site.  smile

I put together a writeup on my thoughts on the road to release for Dragon Age: Inquisition and why it's the most ambitious, and thus most dangerous, game that Bioware has ever made.  hit the front page and you'll spot the sweet banner Mike put together, but here's an easy link:

So I scored an early copy of the movie and put up a review on it:  http://www.gamingtrend.com/reviews/need-for-speed-this-movie-is-supercar-porn/

The plot is tired, but uhm...there's almost no CGI in this movie.  0_0   That kinda takes the crazy stunts to a new level for me.

The 'experts' are all saying that should it migrate to NA we have tried and true quarantine procedures that would serve to greatly lessen the impact.

Nothing to see here - move along (or keep watching Fox News..... ninja)

I'd like to politely ask to keep this from being moved to R&P because I legitimately want to participate, and my conservative ass isn't allowed there.

However, to think that it's unlikely it gets here is naive at best, and I Hope to God our quarantine procedures are that bullet proof.  The Fox News jab was frankly nauseatingly naive as well.

I agree - this isn't a political conversation.   Let's not make it into one unduly.

Yea, I'm not going to jump ship before I have sturdy something or other to land on.  I do feel like my job is paralleling a Dilbert cartoon though.

I told my boss today that I don't feel appreciated, haven't for several years, I think my previous bosses have torpedoed my chances of success here, and as a result I feel like I might need to start looking for other work.   I figure that'll either light a fire under his ass, nothing will happen, or I'll end up leaving.  Either way, it'll work itself out and I just started the countdown....
10  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / So when do you quit? on: July 25, 2014, 10:24:36 PM
So I've been at my job for coming up on three years now.  In that time I've had 8 bosses, 6 VPs, and 4 CIOs.  My newest boss sat back and analyzed things for over 4 months, leaving an ailing department to suffer in the wake.  We've also had 7 reorgs in that time.   I've not received a decent pay raise in three years.  (The first was pro-rated because reasons, the second they punished everyone because our current CIO was angry at our boss at the time, and the third got shuffled out to January to reset the cycle as we used to get raises in July)  I've been handed four teams to manage, with two managers reporting to me that I have to mentor.  I made a case for a promotion to Director more than enough times and I'm getting the runaround.   People adjacent to my boss in the org chart are telling me that it'll work itself out if I'm patient, but c'mon...I've been hearing that for three years.   I feel underappreciated and underpaid for the amount of work I do.   At what point do you say enough is enough?     icon_cry

I look at Kickstarter as gambling.  I only play with as much as I'm willing to lose.   There are some awesome things that I've backed that came to fruition, but at the end of the day I always knew that it could be something that bore no fruit.
12  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Kindle Unlimited - $10 a month for books on: July 19, 2014, 02:30:54 PM
That's really the big challenge.  I read a stat that most people read about 6-8 minutes a day.  A DAY!   I think I read a little more than that, and perhaps if I could have a book open on my second monitor all the time I'd read a lot more, but I just don't know if I'd read enough to justify the price.   I wonder how publishers are taking it....

Just got into this tangle with Centurylink.  So my mom lives in a 55+ community.  At the pedestal outside the park they are getting 26db of signal, but by the time it makes it to my mom's house it's 5.3 db, less than what is required to even remain connected, much less actually use the Internet with any reliability.  So I talk to the tech and he tells me that they'll likely just disqualify the entire area and roll back all of their internet rather than putting a tap in to boost the signal.   saywhat   I'm continuously blown away by just how awful customer service has become.

We'll see. Really hoping this game is great.  If it is, I'll probably bump up to the one with the expansion pass...

In the alpha it was quite easy to get into a random group, I just selected the mission area and the game found two other players to join in.  No issues at all.

Yep, talking with the team at Bungie that's their goal.  They want seamless jump-in, jump-out at all times, even for Raids.

Not as of now. Well, maybe. But low quality. Like iphone shot stuff. We recorded a few weeks back still waiting for it to get mixed this week. 8-10 hrs of recording turns into a chore. A fun chore but still..

Keep us posted - would love to hear it.

As for the mixing stuff, yea...I've done my share of that in the past.  It's a lot of small adjustments on super-zoomed waveforms and audio balancing over and over and over.  Tedious, but when it's done right it's pretty awesome.

I liked the chili cheese as well, but I never understood why and it kind if scared me. The chili didn't look or taste like chili, if I order a bowl of chili from someplace and they gave me that I would be disgusted. Somehow it worked wrapped in a tortilla though.

what happen?

That is a great question.  We took a massive influx of folks to the forum and it flipped over and cried like a little girl.  When the database crashed it corrupted the table for the forum posts.  That's nearly 1 million posts.  0_0     Attempting a repair from phpmyadmin GUI was fruitless due to the size of the table, but it did take the whole box down in its wake, twice.  I went through some of the code and repaired sections by hand and was able to repair the rest from the command line over night last night.  After that, a few more crashed tables surfaced.  I knocked those out.   The last one was a 2GB cache file called "Pretty URLs".   It's what makes this post, as an example, http://gamingtrend.com/forums/forum-and-site-feedback/so-the-news/ easily read from the title rather than saying something like http://gamingtrend.com/forums/forum-and-site-feedback/23498071    Using the knowledge I gained from repairing the other obscenely huge file I was able to crank that one out, fixing the paging issue (users who clicked page 95 of the Steam Deal thread, for instance, instead just redirected to a random page in the forum).

I've done a great deal of maintenance on the forums and they seem zippier than I've seen in a very long time.  I think, while painful, this netted us some additional speed (and me a lot of knowledge) in the long run.
