Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Amazon Kindle: Kindle Fire, Touch and Keyboard unveiled! Lending Unleashed!

How do people like the Kindle Fire after a few months and the software update? I'm thinking about getting one for the following uses:
1. reading books on planes and trains (I'm particulalry interested in the lending library feature) 2. web surfing 3. Netflix streaming
I was thinking about getting a Kindle Touch, but am willing to pay an extra $100 to get functions 2 and 3 above. Hopefully still works well on the Fire.
So, what do the early adopters think? I'll probably wait until the CES this week to make sure nothing is announced that will give me buyers remorse.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Wireless N Question

How can I tell if my HP and ASUS laptops can receive 5 ghz wireless N signals? The paper documentation only refers to wireless n without mention of 2.4 ghz vs 5 ghz. If they can't receive the 5 ghz signals, then there is no point in getting a dual-band router.

Back in the gonegold.com days, I proposed a new forum category called postpatch which would be dedicated to games that were horrible as released but turned out to be pretty good post-patch. One of the Red Baron games comes to mind in this regard.

I just finished the book. It was good except that the last couple of chapters seemed rushed. Also, having been in high school in the 80s, a lot of pop culture seemed to be missing:
Top Gun Wrath of Khan Madonna Rock Lobster Miami Vice

I have my cable modem and wireless N router in the basement of my two story house, and am having dead spots on my second floor. I'm thinking about moving my cable modem and router to the first floor to see if it will clear up the dead spots. However, i only have one cable outlet on my first floor and it is attached to my DVR and TV. Currently, the cable jack in the basement attaches only to the cable modem. Here are my questions for those who can help:
1. Will a cable splitter allow me to attach both my DVR and cable modem to the same outlet? I have Comcast and live in the metro-DC area.
2. Will the cable splitter degrade the performance/quality of the signal to the DVR and cable modem?
3. Will the cable modem, wireless router, and DVR interfere with one another if they sit within a few feet of one another?
4. Will any cable splitter work, or is there one in particular that is useful in this situation?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I managed to get Batman Arkham City last night. I clicked on it within 5 seconds of the deal becoming active. It took about a minute to be added to the cart. By the time I checked out a minute later, they were all gone.
I'm not sure I really want this though. Anyone pick up a Forza 4 and want to trade?

Anyone play this game in 3rd person view instead of 1st person view? I get motion sickness playing first person games, but have played some of the recent thrid person RPGs without a problem. How does it play in 3rd person?

Batter life does seem a little better now, but I need to give it a few days more to see how it goes.
On a side note, Siri keeps activating whenever I try to listen to my voicemail on the handset. I'm not pushing the button, so I don't know why it keeps popping up. I'm now forced to listen to my voicemails through my speaker phone. Anyone else have this problem?
Also, does anyone know if there is an app like Blackberry Mobile conferencing which scans your appointments and will call the dial-in number and conference code?

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Iphone Email Signature Question
|
on: October 29, 2011, 02:26:20 AM
|
|
I just received my first Iphone, a work-issued 4S. I use it for both work email (MS Exchange) and Gmail. Is there a way to automatically use a different email signature based on which email address I sue to send the message? I want to include my professional contact signature when using work email and my personal contact info when sending from Gmail.
Has anyone else done this?

It's stuff like this that made me give up modern PC gaming in favor of GOG.com, consoles and iOS games. The only exception will probably be Diablo 3, but I understand that you don't need a cutting edge system.

If you're looking for a fun .99 time waster, be sure to check out Cashing King. It's a fun mix of RPG and slot machine that works remarkably well. Ack this is terribly addictive lol, thanks Gratch!!!! I picked this up too. The first hour was fun, but it became a grindfest with no skill required. Just keep grinding and you will max out your weapons and win. It was fun for a .99 game though.

I had an Apple 2e back in the mid-80s and loved it (mostly for the games). After that, I pretty much abandoned Apple products in favor of the PC world until 2 years ago when I got my first Ipod Touch, which I love (mostly for the games). RIP.

I noticed that the 4S has the same body dimensions as the 4. Does that mean that third party cases are compatible? Or did Apple move the buttons and ports to require people to buy new overpriced cases again?
Also, whatever happened to the initiative to require phone makes to use micro USB for charging and syncing? Did Apple adopt this policy?
