1  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Windows 10 and Steam on: November 25, 2015, 02:28:55 AM
Ever since I updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10, my Steam games have been working funny. They often won't start or save properly unless I run the game in administrator mode. I searched the steam discussion forums and have seen several people with the same problem without seeing a solution. Anyone else have this problem?
2  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Windows 10 Game Saves on: August 01, 2015, 07:10:30 PM
I just upgraded and now can't save my games. When I hit save in the game, the screen shows that it is saving, but I can't find the file when I try to load it earlier. Any ideas?

Update: I'm playing Dragon Age 1 off of Origin. I am able to save if I run the game as an administrator, but not if I just click on the icon from the start menu.
3  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Any Sales on Elder Scrolls Online? on: March 15, 2015, 03:36:37 PM
I believe that this game is going F2P this week. Does anyone know if there will be a sale on the base game?
4  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Another video card question on: September 14, 2014, 12:30:34 AM
I have a two year old Intel i7 desktop with dying Radeon HD 7770 video card. There is a green tint showing up on my monitor whether I use the hdmi or dvi input. I tried using my hdmi input on my laptop and it looks fine on the same monitor. I've also tried updating drivers and making sure the cables are plugged in correctly.

I've resigned myself to needing a new video card. My monitor is a 24 inch Asus LED. I play mostly RPGs (Skyrim) and strategy games, so I don't need a super fast video card like I would for a FPS game. I do like my eye candy though. Can someone recommend a replacement card? i would like to get a little more visual oomph, buit would like to spend about $150.

Also, since this is the first time I will have to replace a video card in at least 10 years, can you confirm that they all use the same type of slots now so that I don't have to worry about AGP vs PCI?

Thanks in advance for the help.

6  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Sump Pump/Plumbing Question on: May 04, 2014, 06:13:08 PM
Thanks for the input. Instead of agonizing over this issue, I just ordered a 1.5 inch hose from Amazon.
7  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sump Pump/Plumbing Question on: May 03, 2014, 05:32:20 PM
I hope this doesn't sound dumb, but I don't remember my high school physics class from 30 years ago. My sump pump discharges through a 1.5 inch diameter PVC pipe outside my house. I want to extent the discharge pipe so that the water is being channeled further from my house. The Home Depot plumbing guy sold me a flexible 1.25 inch diameter sump pump hose kit and an adapter. However, if the sump pump water discharge coming out of my house is running through and 1.5 inch line and then feeding into a 1.25 inch line, will this cause a problem in the system because more water is being forced through a smaller diameter hose? Will it cause my sump pump to fail? The Home Depot guy said that it doesn't matter because the 1.25 inch hose is open on the end.  Does this make sense?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I finished the expansion over the holidays. I don't think that the Exalt missions added much. I did prefer the genetics upgrades over the Mec upgrades though. Too bad you can't add the genetic upgrades after you unlock the psi abilities though.

I got older and have a lot less time to pay video games now.  I actually read a lot more now because unlike gaming, I can have the same experience whether I am reading on my phone, tablet, or hardcopy

I'm not sure that I will get this. Ten years after D2, D3 just felt boring.

I've been playing this for a few hours over the weekend. I am playing as a human smg shooter and just completed the mission in the cemetery. So far the game seems very linear - enter a new map, talk, look around, fight, repeat. I wish that there were more loot drops.

18  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Replaying KOTOR1 and 2 on: July 14, 2013, 03:01:59 AM
I just finished KOTOR2 on the PC. with the restoration mod.  I originally played the first one on the Xbox about 10 years ago. I think I liked the first one much better, probably because the plot twist was so dramatic. Even with the restoration mod, KOTOR2 felt unfinished. I did notice that there were a lot of similarities between this game and Mass Effect though:

1. One of the KOTOR2 minibosses was named Darth Nihilus.
2. On Dantooine, there were these creatures that looked like praying mantisses, just like the Keepers on the Citadel.
3. The ability to have a PG romance with the female characters.

I'm glad I played KOTOR2 to finish the series. I doubt that I will play them again though. I just finished Mass Effect 1 before starting KOTOR2, so I guess it is time to go back to Mass Effect 2.

20  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: RIP Google Reader on: June 24, 2013, 01:29:06 AM
I switched to Feedly too. I agree with a prior comment about disappointment that Feedly will show previously read feeds when you have read all of the new feeds. I'm also having a problem with the iOS version in that when I get to the end of the category and mark everything read, it stays in the category instead of automatically moving to the next category with unread feeds.

22  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Switching from Iphone 4S to Samsung Galaxy S4? on: June 14, 2013, 12:56:30 AM
Thanks for all of the feedback! Sounds like switching is the way to go, especially since the larger screen is my top priority.
23  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Joe Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy on: June 13, 2013, 10:57:16 PM
I've read most of the books - the initial trilogy, Red Country, Best Served Cold, the Heroes. Many of the characters from the trilogy make cameos in later books and they are well done. It is probably best to pace yourself though. I read the trilogy all in a row and was a somewhat burned out by the end. I read the next three mixed in with other books and enjoyed them better that way. After the trilogy, I liked Best Served Cold the best.
24  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Switching from Iphone 4S to Samsung Galaxy S4? on: June 13, 2013, 06:24:34 PM
I'm thinking of switching from a Verizon Iphone 4S to a Samsung Galaxy S4. My primary reason is to get a bigger screen. I don't run any iOS specific apps, so I'm not concerned about the quantity and quality of the apps stores. I do use my pda to access work MS Outlook based email, contacts and calendar. I've had syncing problems on my Iphone, particularly the Outlook calendar. Can anyone give me their 2 cents as to whether this is a good move or not?

25  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mass Effect Impressions on: June 10, 2013, 01:11:43 AM
I was late to the party, but just finished PC version of Mass Effect. I started the game on the 360 several times, but could not get past the clunky controls. The PC controls made a world of difference. By 2013 standards, I would give this game a 7.5/10 score. What held it back for me were the long elevator rides and that the main story missions were pretty short compared to the side quests. That being said, I did feel much more emotionally invested in the characters than I did in Skyrim, which I finished before starting Mass Effect.

Mass Effect. The game became a lot more fun once I left the Citadel for the first time.

29  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Wireless Router / printer question on: May 28, 2013, 08:09:32 PM
I have a Netgear N600 dual band (2.4 and 5.0 ghz) wireless N router to which I have attached a Brother laser printer via an ethernet cable. When I go to print documents from a laptop connected wirelessly, I can only print if the laptop is connected on the 5.0 ghz frequency, but not on the 2.4 ghz frequency. Has anyone else had this problem? One of my laptops only has 2.4 ghz wireless N, so I can't print from it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm LTTP, but I just finished Skyrim. I would give it a score of 83. While the game mechanics were great, I did not get a feeling of attachment with any of the other characters. In this respect, I really liked the Fable games in which you could more readily see the impact of your decisions.

I watched the trailer, and my reaction was "where is the airpower"? The game takes place in a world with laser technology but no airpower?

36  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: RIP Google Reader on: March 17, 2013, 05:29:15 PM
I'm using Feedly too, primarily because it has both PC and iOS versions. I really liked Mr. Reader on the iPad and I don't know what will happen to it now.

I have two gripes with Feedly though: (1) when all of the feeds have been read, it continues to show the read feeds even though I have the "only unread" filter turned on, and (2) I wish there was a way to increase the size of the text on the screen.

I gave you a twenty minute fix (where 19 of them is waiting for the disk to copy over) and no money, no hassle involved.

If you want to fresh-install, go for it, but I wouldn't call it failproof. If there are drivers that aren't easy to come by, you may not be in the best position. lifting and moving the partition, switching SATA ports and rebooting is the best.

If you want all the dell drivers etc - just use my instructions above. I've used them 4 times already. It's ridiculously easy. The only warning I have is that when you boot from the SSD from the first time, the drive will try to do the copy again, indicate it can't do it (since that was the condition of the original system drive you moved). Let it reboot, and you're done.

So :

Install software.
Tell software to move 2TB drive to 256GB drive
Tell it to execute.
Let it do the work.
power down.
Switch SATA cables
Power on - tries to boot the software again.
let it fail and reboot

Windows (with all drivers) running from SSD.

You can now use windows to wipe out and repartition your SATA 2TB disk as you see fit.

Purge, I need your help. I downloaded the software and copied everything from the HD to the SSD. The I went into my BIOS and couldn't find the SSD in the options for the first boot priority. I let it reboot. I see that all the files are on both disks. I tried to reformat the HD, but got an error saying that I can't do this because Windows is running from this drive.  What am I missing here?
38  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Moving Windows 7 to SSD on: March 15, 2013, 09:43:05 PM

It turns out that others have received their computers and the OS is also installed on the HD instead of SSD. Someone in the Slickdeals forum were I found the deal posted the below advice.  Will this method work?

The most failproof way:

1. Open the case, unplug the power from the 2 TB hard disk
2. Boot up the PC with the Winodws Install DVD
3. Choose advanced install, format drive.
4. Install Windows onto the SSD drive
5. Turn off, reattach the 2TB HD
6. Boot up into the SSD Windows if it presents you two choices
7. Run disk management and delete boot partition on 2TB HD, create new volume, format.

More or less that. Dell are asshats for installing it on the slower non SSD drive.
39  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Moving Windows 7 to SSD on: March 15, 2013, 02:24:03 PM
Slickdeals listed a great deal of recertified Dell 8500s earlier this week and I picked one up.  It has both a 2 TB HD and a 256 GB SSD. To my surprise, Dell installed Windows 7 on the HD, not on the SSD. I've done some internet searches on how to move Windows 7 to the SSD, but many of the articles and posts were about 2 years old and some of the advice was contradictory. Has anyone done this recently and can recommend how to do it?

The HD only has about 50 GB on it now, so I don't have to worry about free space on the SSD for the move.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't understand why they would do this when AOE3 has been out for years.  Was AOE2 that much different or better?
