It's still a very well-written and -acted soap opera and I don't disparage anybody for liking it. Maggie Smith alone is worth the price of admission. I just stopped caring about it.

You can't leave out the Grandmother/Duchess. Her couple of one liners and facial expressions she gets every show are some of the best stuff on TV.

Curious about this. When the title, "soap opera" is given to a show what does that mean to you?
To me its always conjured up images of over acted, poorly directed, cheap sets and B rank and file actors.

I don't see Downton in that light. That's why I'd like to know others definition of the phrase.

I guess the definition means the shows plots come from the personal likes/dislikes of characters with each other. So its all about this character hates that one, and this character is in love with this one etc. and the plots about outside stuff like WW I aren't' there as much. For example the love triangle stuff that has been going on with the 2 young girl cooks(Daisy and Ivy) and the valet would be an example of a 'soap opera' plot I'd say.

The ratings for season 4 in the UK were as high as past seasons.

I officially bailed on this show effective with tonight's episode. I started to lose interest -- and the show started to wander -- when WW1 ended. Then a few weeks ago they threw in a subplot that was completely gratuitous because they felt like a particular character (OK, Anna...if you're watching you know what I'm talking about) was too happy or needed some conflict. It crossed completely into soap opera territory at that point. Now that The Walking Dead is back on the same day and time, I am done with Downton.

The first two seasons were really good, I'll give it that.

You leave Downton cause of lost interest but watch the Walking Dead? That show stopped being good after the first season.
51  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Annual Installments discussion on: February 09, 2014, 06:23:07 AM
First several of those titles listed don't have annual releases. Second series like CoD and AC are at the top of the sales charts every year. So while some here don't like the development choices the fact is they have made the publishers massive revenues.

Except they turn right around and have two of the main chicks have a lesbo scene right away. There's promise here and I realize there's going to be a certain amount the sex cause its Starz, but they need to take a look at other premium cable channels like HBO and Showtime that can have adult content without always going to titillation for viewers.

Yeah, because all those people who bought a Wii bought it because of the killer resolutions and frame rates.  Roll Eyes

Most people buy consoles for the games, period. Most gamers don't know WTF a frame rate is, or what resolutions are. You're applying your technical expertise to the population as a whole. Case in point, the "vastly inferior" 720p version of Call of Duty sold more copies on XB1 than PS4 in December.

I definitely don't have any sour grapes considering I've put in nearly 100 hours in XB1 exclusives I couldn't have played had I gone with the PS4. Likewise, I'll be buying a PS4 later it's year when they actually have something besides indie titles to play.

Sure dude. You first try and give examples to disprove the power difference while admitting they aren't good examples, then just say "well it doesn't matter anyways" pretty much the definition of it.

As for the Wii it sold allot fast then its sales fell off fast(look it up), and all those people didn't stick with Nintendo seeing the Wii U bombing in sales. Not a good example. As for people buying consoles for games...wow what a statement. As for more copies of CoD on the One yea its was more but it used to be far more in the 360 vs PS3. Its far closer now and that's the point you conveniently ignore.

In the end its a fact there is a power difference between the two. There's no disputing it. Whether that matters to a gamer is a personal choice but saying that people who think frame rate and resolution don't matter aren't gamers is just lame.

I've gotten well over 100 hours on my PS4 already. IMO I didn't see anything on the One for exclusives worth playing.
Different strokes.

Not true. Forza 5, FIFA and NBA 2K14 run full 1080p/60fps. I will grant you those are sports titles and presumably may not be as difficult to get to run as smooth as an action shooter.

At any (frame)rate, all I know is Dead Rising 3 ran at 720p and 30fps and I had a freaking blast with that game. If you're basing your enjoyment of a game on framerate and resolution, you're doing it (gaming) wrong.

We can look back to the first two Xbox's and how many fanboys tried to tout games as superior graphics wise for years over the PS2/PS3 when it came to multiplat titles.

It doesn't make sense that the Xbox gap is so bad from a hardware standpoint that it's forcing devs into 30fps vs 60fps decisions. The XB1 has games - even multi-platform games - that run at 60fps.

What does this mean? Well, it means a respectable amount of extra GPU power will be available to devs, which will be of particular use when it comes to cross-platform titles. It's somewhat bad news for fans of the Kinect though, as this also means that devs will now have to make a choice between Kinect support or more GPU, and I don't think Kinect is going to win that battle very often.

It will help but its not going to stop the multiplatform titles we see being 1080p vs 720p, or 60 vs 30 fps.

Black Tusk were originally supposed to be developing a new IP to alternate years with Halo, but now it looks like they are just going to be the Gears shop.  What they showed at E3 has now been said to have just been concept work, and didn't represent an actual game in development.

Well that's sort of what Gears was on the 360. Get Halo one year and a Gears game the next. I also feel its not quite the franchise anymore MS thinks it is. They would be better of trying to lock up Titanfall beyond the initial game and pair it with Halo like Gears was last generation.

The fact that two systems sold 7+ million in a month and a half completely puts to rest the dumb comments about gamers not wanting a new generation. Quite the opposite in fact. Heck we've never had two big consoles launch literally head to head like this. Its always been a a year or so separation so the fact they can sell that many is really impressive.

I think what Purge is trying to say is that even if Sony has been a proponent for digital distribution, they certainly didn't trumpet that when MS was facing a backlash over online DRM.

That's called being a smart business. Also they don't need to trumpet it. Their actions in what they offer with digital speak for themsleves. MS screwing up their own PR is their own fault. Sony had no obligation to bail them out.

Nobody said they Sony had to - even I pointed out how it was a good strategy for THEM, as in Sony. For progress in gaming? Notsomuch - they set back disk-less console gaming licenses being more than just buy it and be stuck with it. There is nothing to be done about it now - MS will likely swing their product in that direction via open-market means (eg: hey buy Halo 5 online, and you could trade it in / share it vs buying in-store). If they're smart, they'll make it slightly cheaper. Or they may just nurse their DRM backlash wounds and not push further.

OMG you are freaking hilarious. You actually think that MS was on some amazing path with digital distribution an licensing with the Xbox One and Sony irrecoverably ruined it? Geez dude talk about going off the rails....

To me, the most interesting part of that is the Wii U number (which doesn't include the extremely important Nov/Dec numbers).  Their sales aren't quite as dire as I'd been imagining.

I get that Nintendo didn't have the impressive out-of-the-gate stats (and, in fact, stumbled), but this indicates that they're gaining more traction than I expected.  I don't imagine they'll overtake either of the other two in the long run, however.

Huh? That shows how Nintendo sales have utterly collapsed. The PS4 has basically caught the Wii in 6 weeks. The Wii U has zero traction at this point.

Microsoft clearly put allot of stock into the US since its already become easy to get one now. If they had taken some of that into other markets they could have been closer in sales, but then again they are also hindered by having to get Kinect voice working  in all those different languages.

Here's something that will blow your mind.

It took the 360 2 1/2 years to reach 10 million units. The XB1 has already hit nearly 1/3 of that in less than 2 months.

The PS3 reached 20 million units in 2 years. The PS4 has already reached nearly 1/4 of that in less than 2 months.

Both of these consoles are crushing records. Game publishers have to be doing a happy dance right now, because apparently the console industry is FAR from dead.

Your numbers look like just U.S. not worldwide. 360 sold more than that in total after 2 /12 years.
