1681  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Five things that irritate me about console gaming on: February 04, 2005, 07:15:56 PM
Quote from: "Rob_Merritt"

2. Dual analog sticks in third person games. I remember that third person action games didn't use to be so hard when we just used one analog stick or the dpad. Aiming is an extreme chore and drains the fun right out of games of the genre.

3. Forward - back - strafe? This sort of goes with number 2. In third person games, game developers almost always put strafing controls with the forward and backwards motion. I think having forward, back, and turn left or right controls as one stick makes far more sense. Its like steering then. Simple things like Doors get me very angry. I moving forward and then I slightly strafe and hit the wall and start sliding around.

Don't know why you would complain about this as its the closest equivelent to a PC gaming setup with a mouse/keyboard.

I'll personally take the keyboard/mouse anyday for a game if I could but the dual analog stick setup is the closest there is for a gamepad. I've been a PC games for most of my life but don't find using the dual sticks hard.

I'll always agree about the checkpoint save system. It just sucks, its outdated and there is no reason to have it anymore. Even on a system that uses memmory cards. Simply let people save when they want. Period. I actually got frustrated playing GR2 n the Xbox initially because I couldn't believe I wasn't making it to at least the first save point ever in a map. Then I realized the game lets you save when you want. What a console game without a checkpoint system? Hell is freezing over...

Any newz on whether they fixed that button issue, or is it still a problem for the US release?

From what I heard, it was an underlying circuit board manufacturing defect and they just needed to alter the board, not the whole design.

Not what I herd. They didn't want the machine to be any bigger than a certain size nor make the screen any smaller so they moved the button "detector" or whatever you call it partially off to the side to make it fit. Hence the x button isn't very responsive. Was a deliberate choice on their part it seems. Boggles my mind personally. First and formost thing the machine should be reliable, work exactly as advertised and just plain do its thing. When a company puts "looks" ahead of funcionality I get uneasy.
1683  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP Launch Details March 24, $249 on: February 03, 2005, 07:14:13 PM
This would probably be the first console tpye system I've ever pre-ordered home ro portable in my life if the button issue hadn't appeared. I can live with the battery life but now seeing how they purposely crippled  a part of the machine to meet some asthetic look as made me stay on hold. I'll wait to see if the hardware gets revised before the US launch.

Enjoyed it for the recreation of the world and production values for awhile but  it became tedious and dull after awhile for me. Just felt like I was going through the motions.
1686  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / VGA Adapters (PS2) on: January 29, 2005, 12:45:20 AM
Don't think there are any specifically for the PS2. Just generic adapters that can take the RCA/component video output and turn it into a VGA signal.
1687  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 2 and Cartridges might have some teeth? on: January 26, 2005, 08:55:47 AM

Remember, if they use Disk media for the next system it will either be Blu-Ray or HD-DVD and those are not yet cheap enough to make them that much more cost effective.

Yes it would be. Far cheaper. HD and Blue ray costs will come down in time like regular DVD costs have. The cost diffrential between flash media and DVD(even Blue-ray) is allot. Its not even remotely close.

Even if you stick with today's dual-layer DVD's you have about 9GB of storage for 40 cents or so. How much would even a 1GB flash card cost?

This stuff is for a storage medium for saves, and DL's like maps and such.
1688  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 2 and Cartridges might have some teeth? on: January 25, 2005, 06:53:54 AM
Thee cost effectivness of any flash media around and a DVD format isn't even in the same galaxy in terms of being close. There is zero reason for them to change from disc media. Its proven, its cheap and it allows the system to do things like be a DVD player too. No idea why people have taken the rumors of MS doing stuff with flash type media meaning that must be how games on the next Xbox will be. There's other much more logical reason for it i.e as a storage medium for the system.
1689  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vampire worth getting? on: January 25, 2005, 06:41:35 AM
I've enjoyed the game overall, but the run through the sewers part in Hollywood was blech. No idea what they were thinking with that part. Its like some annoying Bloodlines version of a dungeon crawl just stuck in there for no reason. I hope this doesn't preview how they rest of the game will be.
1690  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Anyone getting bored with WOW? on: January 22, 2005, 10:53:55 PM
I have had a drop off in interest myself. Not to the point of wanting to quit but to where I don't want to always play on my free time with it. I think thats just because in the end these games arn't at the top of my lists as favorites. WoW is easily the best of the lot I've played, and I like hooking up with friends to do things but I also want to still play other games. I like it enough to keep going but I'm probably playing maybe 10 hours a week now vs 20+ duing the first month or so after getting it.
1691  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Cell Architecture explained on: January 22, 2005, 03:58:42 AM
It all sounds terrrific on paper. The problem is getting it into a working design that can be massed produced. They've been at this for years and from whats gotten out about cell it hasn't been easy for them. Just shows how complex and hard making a brand new design is and why in the PC world we are still using updated variations of the same CPU's as we had years ago.
1692  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half Life 2 ending...NO SPOILERS plz on: January 21, 2005, 09:36:15 AM
Yea the ending for HL2 is right up there with Halo 2 in the "WTF...you gotta be kidding me" territory. I can see having a setup for a sequal but give people  a good satisfying ending for the game they just finished. A cliff-hanger/keep you guessing ending is okay for a a weekly TV show but not for a game series were it might be several years till the next installment comes out.
1693  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: What if WoW was not made by Blizzard? on: January 20, 2005, 05:30:12 PM

I am reasonably sure that some other developers could have made a very similar game given the material.

The question then, is it the material?  Is it the name "Blizzard"?  Or is it simply a good game?

You could say that about any succesful developer. That fact is another developer couldn't do it because....well no one has untill WoW came along(at least thats the opinion of the games current fans) your opinion may differ. Does Blizzard get more attention that many devs? Yea but they have earned that by the games they have released.
1694  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / ***EA Signs exclusive deal with ESPN*** :'[ on: January 19, 2005, 05:46:34 PM
Wouldn't disagree with that. Never understood myself people who would pay $50 every year for minor changes. I think $20 is fair for the inbetween new console generations versions of the games with a full $50 price when its updated for those new consoles. With EA having the lock though we will never see that.
1695  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / ***EA Signs exclusive deal with ESPN*** :'[ on: January 18, 2005, 08:10:40 PM
Quote from: "Purge"

They're the BIG FISH. It has nothing to do with smarts, it has to do with pull. Sega was also bidding on the NFL exclusivity.

The fact that Sega was able to dent the hull of the EA Behemoth shows they were smart. They gambled and if EA hadn't landed the exclusivity contract now, do you think they'd be nearly as profitable this time next year? What's the only way EA can stop their (arguably better) upstart competitor? Take away their ability to compete. Break their knees, sign exclusive contracts, whatever. If Sega had won the NFL contract (which was VERY unlikely) they would have had the same advantage.

While the new pricing did cut into EA's sales they had to make a drastic price cut to do it. Would it have made along term effect is anybody's guess. Now we won't know.
1696  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Blizzard - No more WoW copies being made available on: January 18, 2005, 06:24:12 PM

The problem isnt money, or the number of servers.  They already threw hardware at the problem, remember?  /quote]

The problem was the servers, or the lack of them. Blizzard didn't have enough up when the game launched. Now they have a number of servers that can't handle the loads they must have assumed they could. Now they have a number of overloaded high pop servers and many low pop ones. Offering a way for players and guilds to switch over would be a viable way to spread the load. If theirs any way they can do this it should be looked into.
1697  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I never thought I say this about Gamepro... on: January 18, 2005, 12:14:30 AM
So what? Only the most brainless Halo fanboy would lap up the massive hype for the game. The same goes with any of the other titles released that get listed "As the greatest thing since sliced bread". The game never was going to live up to the hype. Neither was HL2 or any other game. Stop listening to all that hype crap and you will enjoy your games allot more I say.
1698  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / ***EA Signs exclusive deal with ESPN*** :'[ on: January 18, 2005, 12:09:15 AM
Don't know if its stupid. Does Sega have a reason to continue with ESPN after EA got the NFL. A pro football game with ESPN in the title but with everything else made up doesn't make much sense to me from a marketing standpoint. And with EA maybe going after the NBA and such again the ESPN licsense doesn't have much meaning for them if they loose all of the official deals with the major leagues.

Never had a problem or a que either and Whisperwind is a 'high' volume server.

Same here. My server Deathwing is a high pop server and I've never seen a que either. We had some downtime but its way less than other MMO's I've played. I've personally been very happy with the game. SUcks that there do seem to be issues with some of the servers.
1700  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Blizzard - No more WoW copies being made available on: January 17, 2005, 11:59:05 PM
The problems thay've had since launch wouldn't have been around in beta. That was a much smaller number playing the game. The main issues arn't in gamebugs that I have seen, its overloading on the system, or on specific servers. I think they may have let the population cap be too high per server.

If there is a way for them to migrate people(and include guilds as a whole) to the lower population servers this would be a good move on their part. Again if they can even do it.

I highly doubt that Steam is the way PC games are going. There are so many people against Steam (take a look at the official forums) that I don't think the PC gaming community would put up with another steam from another company.

Saying this is always misleading for any game. The forums are always full of  people having problems. This goes for HL2 or any other game. It doesn't take that many people to make it look like "everybody" doesn't like it. The people not having a problem with STEAM arn't posting there because well they don't have a problem with it.

Valve's releasing the Official CS Bot on Monday for those who don't like to play online.
1702  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / EB Games Price gouging ?? on: January 13, 2005, 07:36:31 PM
Huh? are you saying people who pre-ordered from EB who didn't get the game when it first came out because of shortages now can't get it at what they pre-ordered at even though there are now copies availible? That I havn't herd of and would need to see something official to believe thats happening.
1703  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Don't forget! 24 starts tonight! on: January 12, 2005, 08:57:04 PM
Great start IMO. I'm glad they almost completely changed the cast. They needed to after season 3 which I never watched all the way through(definatly the weakest one).

Chloe is great. Her attitude and the looks she gives are the best. Keifer is also just great in is role. Jack Bower just kicks ass. The ending of episode 3 when he "improvises" a way to keep the terrorist held up for awhile longer is classic 24.

Yea the shows outrageous at times but so what? Its 10 times btter than the usual sitcom, police, or hospital show crap that is shown so much on TV these days.

Obviously Halo 2 has a nice multiplayer portion, and runs well on it's console, but nothing IMHO about the gameplay is innovative.  Compare it to any reasonably good PC FPS and it's lightyears behind the curve.

You'll have to tell me of all these PC FPS that are "light years" ahead of Halo 2 because I havn't played them and I like FPS allot and have played or at least tried most of them(mostly on the PC). Halo 2 isn't the second coming that its been hyped about I'll agree there, but its a quality, fun shooter that stands up to the others out there.

...but it just felt like MOTS in about every fashion as if it was just a stand alone expansion pack...

I had to respond to the More of the Same (MOTS) statement that I see quite often with games and their sequels.  MOTS is never an issue for me with games.  I view games like I view books.  If you are reading a "series" of books I never hear people exclaim that book numbers 2, 3, 4 etc. in the series is MOTS.  Why?  Because you know its a series and you expect it to be a continuation.

Well I think its fair to expect some new things and improvements to the game with a sequal. The general gameplay the same? Yes. KOTOR was not a perfect game. It was very good overall but it had some issues which have been discussed many times. KOTOR II solved none of them. Its literally more levels and a add-on story put together. They changed nothing about it. I expect more from a game(any game) when it has a II after it myself. Just my opninion of course.
1707  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / It's Official: KOTOR II is HALO 2's Daddee on: January 11, 2005, 04:41:18 PM
Played the second game for about 5-6 hours. It just didn't grab me like the first one. Its not like I hated it, but it just felt like MOTS in about every fashion as if it was just a stand alone expansion pack. I will probably go back to the game at a later date but with so many other things I'm interested in it will be awhile.

A press release today said that 600K copies have been sold so far(not sure if thats sell through or shipped). They've reached 200K users on at once too. Pretty impressive considering its only been released in the US so far.

Does a RTS really need a realistic physics system?

I imagine the physics system will come in handy when calculating the physics details of bodies being flung from explosions and crumpling upon death, among many other things.  Necessary?  No.  Pretty?  Yes.  Fun?  I bet it probably will be.

I guess but I don't see why thats needed in a RTS. Was anybody complaing about bodies being blown up unrealistically  before. I mean when stuff goes up in Warhammer 40K it looks cool to me and I'm not thinking are these guys flying the proper distance?

Just don't see the need for this in a RTS when you have dozens or more units on the screen at the same time shooting and blowing things up all over. There's so much action going on and at a smaller size on screen than say a FPS that I doubt anybody will even much notice. Seems like unnecassary overhead to me.

I'm probably 70/30 too. I group whenever I can hook up with my guild members since I just think its more fun even thought you can be pretty efficient on your own. Also have done a number of quick groupings too do a specific quest or two when there are others in the area doing the same.

I will say for BB what I said about Microsoft and it's Xbox when it first came out: If they are rich enough, and really push to achieve a goal, then it will be accomplished.  BB will not lose to Netflix.  They already have a huge user base for in-store customers.  Once they catch wind of the online options, BB's home delivery numbers with soar.  Netlfix has survived by being relatively unique.  And while Walmart and Target have tons of money as well, I am not sure they could take Blockbuster, if only because BB survives by selling/renting DVDs, while Walmart simply gains a profit from it.  Guess only time will tell.

Using that logic then a company like Amazon shouldn't have been able to compete against all the long time brick and mortor stores, but they do very well now. Netflix has more than a chance to keep going. IMO BB has waited too long to start changing(like most of the brick and mortor stores have done when it comes to the internet).

I will say that I wouldn't be surprised to see someone buy up Netflix though.

So shipping will be super duper fast.    biggrin

Ok the speed will be there but what about the selection. Another advantage that Netflix has is it offers basically everything. If its been put on DVD you can pretty much get it from them. Your average BB store doesn't have near the inventory.
