1681  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Funniest quest I have ran across (WoW) on: January 09, 2005, 02:58:34 AM
The funniest reward I've gotten is a Stranglethorn quest were you get a "Goblin Fishing Pole". Its 5 sticks of Dynamite.
1682  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / So, how many alts do YOU have in WoW? on: January 09, 2005, 02:54:04 AM
Just one character, a lvl 35 Rogue. I've never sayed with a MMO long enough to get a really high level character before. I have enjoyed WoW enough that I can see myself sticking with it for awhile, and want to get one character up to the top.

The Adventure Packs aren't the only way we'll be adding content. Our Live Team is working on in-game events and storylines that will be surfacing in the coming weeks. Just as we added two new zones with this week's update, more free adventure areas will be coming in subsequent updates.

I love how they say those adventure areas are "free".

Does a RTS really need a realistic physics system?

I imagine the physics system will come in handy when calculating the physics details of bodies being flung from explosions and crumpling upon death, among many other things.  Necessary?  No.  Pretty?  Yes.  Fun?  I bet it probably will be.

I guess but I don't see why thats needed in a RTS. Was anybody complaing about bodies being blown up unrealistically  before. I mean when stuff goes up in Warhammer 40K it looks cool to me and I'm not thinking are these guys flying the proper distance?

Just don't see the need for this in a RTS when you have dozens or more units on the screen at the same time shooting and blowing things up all over. There's so much action going on and at a smaller size on screen than say a FPS that I doubt anybody will even much notice. Seems like unnecassary overhead to me.

1688  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / How much time do you solo vs. group in WoW? on: December 29, 2004, 06:59:02 PM
I'm probably 70/30 too. I group whenever I can hook up with my guild members since I just think its more fun even thought you can be pretty efficient on your own. Also have done a number of quick groupings too do a specific quest or two when there are others in the area doing the same.
1689  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Blockbuster online now $14.99 for 3 w/ 2 free in-store! on: December 28, 2004, 12:17:35 AM

I will say for BB what I said about Microsoft and it's Xbox when it first came out: If they are rich enough, and really push to achieve a goal, then it will be accomplished.  BB will not lose to Netflix.  They already have a huge user base for in-store customers.  Once they catch wind of the online options, BB's home delivery numbers with soar.  Netlfix has survived by being relatively unique.  And while Walmart and Target have tons of money as well, I am not sure they could take Blockbuster, if only because BB survives by selling/renting DVDs, while Walmart simply gains a profit from it.  Guess only time will tell.

Using that logic then a company like Amazon shouldn't have been able to compete against all the long time brick and mortor stores, but they do very well now. Netflix has more than a chance to keep going. IMO BB has waited too long to start changing(like most of the brick and mortor stores have done when it comes to the internet).

I will say that I wouldn't be surprised to see someone buy up Netflix though.

I just saw this on BB's website:

"In 2005, BLOCKBUSTER Online will gain inventory support from our network of more than 4,500 BLOCKBUSTER stores nationwide."

So shipping will be super duper fast.    biggrin

Ok the speed will be there but what about the selection. Another advantage that Netflix has is it offers basically everything. If its been put on DVD you can pretty much get it from them. Your average BB store doesn't have near the inventory.

I don't know why Blockbuster doesn't just do a monthly fee but with their local stores. Cut out the seperate rental fee per movie with lates fees all together.
1692  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Alliance Vs. Horde on: December 25, 2004, 03:28:02 AM
Horde- Troll Rogue.

Didn't think I would have fun playing a melee class in a MMO but Blizzard actually made it pretty fun. At least so far.

NEWS FLASH: That's not the point.

I'd say its a very good point. Considering all the stuff people put up with computers and other stuff in their life to see the amount of complaining about STEAM is just absurd. People want to make it out like the software will destroy your OS, burn out your hardware, and give personal information to Valve so they can sell it to people who will then destroy your credit.

Get over it people.

Mine is a GeForce 5600. Not cutting edge, but completely DirectX 9 compliant. Please don't misconstrue my comments as saying I thought HL2 was ugly. It was FAR from that. It's just after hearing the massive hyperbole for the engine (which in regards to animations, physics, and faces [EDIT: and FPS] was quite deserved) I was very disappointed to look at extremely blurry looking walls. (Even with textures set to High)[/quote

The 5600 cards don't run Dx9.0 in HL since the whole FX runs DX9.0 code so poorly so you arn't seeing what the engine can really do. No idea how you had blurry textures. Maybe its something with your card or the demo using smaller resolution textures. The full game on my 9500Pro has sharp fine textures. In fact IMO HL2 texturing work is some of the best. Way better than the constant dull look that DOOM 3 had.

"Better framerate? Personally, I see all next-gen games being locked at 60fps all the time. "

So? A constant 60fps is perectly fine.

"720i is 720x480 resolution and 1080i is 1080x480. "

720p is the VGA equivelent of 1280x720 & 1080i is like 1900 x1280(not sure about that but its around there).

They said the same thing before the PS2 was released.

The PS2 was going to kill the PC off years ago anyways. Sony is the king of hype.

There's nothing unfair about the practice. Exclusive liscense agreements happen all the time. Look around you. I don't like this myself but EA and the NFL has every right to do this if they want too.

What I meant was EA would never publish a military sim NOW such as Lock-On, Silent Hunter, Il-2 Sturmovik.  I loved the old Jane's Combat games.  But EA (maybe becasue Jane's didn't make enough), woudl not do that now.

Basically nobody would publisher a a flight Sim like the Janes titles anymore, just like Adventure games are pretty much the domain of smaller companies like The Adventure Company. At least outside of the couple of Myst titles recently.

I guess were on diffrent pages then. I never saw anything I would consider stealth gameplay from FC. Also never had the AI come after me if I sniped them. They would just try and shoot at me, but they never came after me regardless of the difficulty level.
1701  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / [WoW] PvP just not for me? on: December 16, 2004, 09:37:40 PM
While I do like the concept of PvP(its just so much more fun to get into a fight with other players than killing more mobs). I wish it was more than just open season. Have something like Planetside were you can take over outposts were the game would put your sides NPC's there if you held it for awhile. Get exp for killing players(even just the equivelent of what a mob at that level gives). The rush of getting into a fight with my guild member is fun, but there's more that they could do.

1703  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Far Cry for those who have finished HL2 on: December 16, 2004, 06:53:33 AM
Well I don't think your getting my point. I didn't see any way to "approach" things diffrently. You will have to list these diffrent ways you could complete objectives. Mind you I don't personally consider being able to approach a base from a diffrent way if the objective is still just to kill all the guards and or find something to be all that diffrent. In the end there was one way to complete the objectives that I saw. You just could approach the camp from a diffrent way(east, west, etc). Thats minimal too me and is pretty much negligable in terms of gameplay IMO.

Also don't see were Farcry took more "thought" to play than HL2.

I never got the "freedom" people talk about in Farcry. The places that don't have anything to do with the main game are just jungle and shoreline. Its fun to explore for awhile but there's no other reason to wander and it got boring with nothing to reward exploring. You still had to go to a specific place and do a specific thing in order to move forward like any FPS. Its nice to look at but it was style and not much substance for me.

They mean the fact that maps were wide open so that you could go about attacking a camp from any direction, instead of being lead straight into it without any other options.

*shrug* So? Don't see how that really changes the game. You go in from the left and fight those soldiers first and then the others, or vice versa. Its the same experience wether you went straight in or circled to the back. Its not like you had some sort of moment like say from the movie Predator were Arnold's character improvises with the truck on the blocks and the bomb. Now if they had put something along those lines in there to reward the player for taking their time to asses the situation then ok I would agree thats cool, but its not there. The same experience from a diffrent angle makes no diffrence to me. It might as well be a corridor setup then.

Jez, that about missing the point people. I think what  Iwata is trying to convey is just releasing a new system that can just push more polygons and preform more calculations is not the direction he wants to head in..

The sole reason he "thinks this way" is because he knows Nintendo isn't going to compete with the 800 pund Gorillas in MS and Sony in that area alone. Nintendo was happy to do the standard stuff with consoles for years and now it not the way to go suddenly? Please, I will give Nintendo credit for trying something new with the DS but this change in thinking is 100% a reaction to Sony and MS.

Exactly the same here. I felt I had basically flushed $60 down the toilet with SWG. It took about 5 diffrent friends telling me to give WoW a try, and I finally did. This is the first MMO I can actually see myself getting to the highest level in.

Kinda wish EQ2 hadn't come out at the same time. Would have liked to at least give that a try but one MMO is more than enough.

Agree 100%. This reminds me of an ad for Guild Wars in a magazine. I loved one of the lines in it ha that sums up my feelings on these games completely. It went something like "This is an online RPG built to be enjoyed not endured".

Not saying Guild Wars will live up to that line or WoW, I just like the sentiment behind that statement.

I wouldn't woory either about this game. As Fellow said the guys behind it are veterens of the industry. I also don't expect anything really new. Maybe for the hardcore gamers the PS2's backwards compatibility was a factor, but I'd say DVD drive was a bigger point in general for people looking to get the system at the time of its release.
