I for one cannot wait for the first week of release. I'm not even that keen to play the games I just want to see how things play out. Who was right, who was wrong, who was covering up, etc.

Oh who was right or wrong will go on long after these systems are released. Were just finishing round one guys.

I thought MS was running some series of events in different cities were people could play Xbox One games?

The Xbox backlash has been from a very small segment of the market - people who read gaming sites and preorder consoles.

Then why did MS reverse so many of their initial policies? Why bow down to such a small minority if the majority would want all of these "awesome features" as they were originally described as?

MS fans still can't seem to accept the truth that MS royally fucked up those first couple of months and has had to spend all this time doing damage control.

THey already announced the XB1 will allow added HDD space  via USB3 IIRC. It's not in place as of yet.

Right, which is why I said it didn't support it at launch. I know it will later. If someone were to get 8-10 games at launch (not even counting downloadable things), are they just SOL? Can you even replace the drive in the XB1? I honestly don't know.

How many people would have 8+ games they are actually playing installed at once. If its more than 5% I'd be very surprised.

Besides the PS4 will have the easy HD upgrade just like the PS3 did.

Long as the reviews hit before the system comes out then I don't see the big deal. I guess Xbone fanboys don't like the possibility of positive PS4 reviews being out there with no corresponding XB1 reviews.

In a situation where pre-orders are almost necessary in order to get a console within the first few months after launch, pre-release information is extra important so that we can make educated choices about which product to buy, if any. Sony knows this and Microsoft knows this, so when either of them holds back information, it's easy to get suspicious as the consumer.

Those pre-orders were made long ago. If someone went with one of the bundles they know full well they are committing to the game(s) without having reviews to make a decision so no it still doesn't matter much. As for the rest if the Nov 12th info is right then you got 10 days to read reviews to your hearts content before its out.

With Ghosts I think its that the majority of the sales are still going to come from the current gen systems because of the install bases, hence they aren't putting that much effort into the One/PS4 versions. Turn Ten can get Forza because they are making a signature game for the system and they have to make it for one spec not the 5 for Ghosts. Plus and this is a guess I bet its easier to get a racing game looking good at high FPS than a big shooter like Battlefield.

I think the difference is that Turn 10 was on the inside - I recall videos where they had direct input on product design.

The teams working with outside vendors (due to the confidentiality agreements and the nature of competitive business) are not going to have those same inside tracks. MS will surely help them, but they're not going to invite  Dice, IW, and the like into the design process proper - it would be like a cook asking you to help sear your steak as opposed to your waiter asking how you like your steak done. EA, Activision, Ubisoft - they are individually collaborators with MS and Sony, but also their customers. MS doesn't dictate what gets put in their games - and they don't get the kind of insider benefits a first party developer does.

If true I find that very telling as to why the Xbox one ended up the way it did. Kinect, Cable TV addon stuff, etc..

Mark Cerny publicly talked about spending a long time talking to many different developers about what they wanted in a new console. Basically the opposite of what they had done with the PS3. Conversely it looks like Microsoft came up with what they thought was best and then released it to developers and said here ya go guys now make games for it.

One of the major reasons why I've personally switched and pre-orderd the PS4 after being mostly an Xbox gamer for the last generation.

I don't see why people would have trouble with other super hero stuff not being mentioned. The very basis of Marvel comics is based on the concept of all these different timeline/universes etc. Just look at the crazy number of X-men variations they have spit out over the years. I think it would be bad to incorporate all that into the show. It would quickly get very convoluted and IMO only appeals to the most hardcore comic book fan that follows every thread. This is a mass market TV show on a major Network. That stuff isn't gonna fly.

Stupid China's terrible and corrupt labor and business culture. I hate having to worry about this with every big purchase.
The worst thing about this particular instance is that consumers get screwed either way because there's not a lot of choice when it comes to games consoles. We don't have much power to influence the console manufacturers here. Only for electronics where there is actual choice do we get the chance to make a difference. I know Apple uses Foxconn extensively, despite getting grilled about it in the media multiple times. Don't buy iPhones or iPads. Buy competing products that don't use labor practices that equate to slavery. I think some of their competitors do the same thing (Samsung maybe?) but I don't remember the details at the moment.

All of them do it. ALL of them. Don't buy the horseshit that it's just Apple. Our electronics empire is built on the back of cheap asian labor, and it's not going to stop until China changes their labor laws

Most of them use chinese labor, yes. Not all of them use Foxconn though, which is where the biggest problems are. There are varying degrees of worker abuse in China too, but Foxconn uses every single opportunity, every single loophole, to drain their workers of everything they've got. Foxconn is the problem that has to be dealt with first.

How do you know that Foxconn is the worst? We know about their problems because they are the biggest and associated with companies like Apple so the news covers it. I hardly doubt other manufacturers are any better. They just don't have reporters snooping around their factories.

People this is a beta version without all the stuff like the best textures used. There's no reason this doesn't look the same as BF3 on the 360 did which was just fine for a current gen game.

Same here. While I still enjoy seeing the sets, and outdoor shots of New Zealand they put in I just never got into the movie. It just sort of plodded along. Scenes like the council meeting in Rivendale felt like forced fan service to show past characters and some of the action stuff like the chase at the end felt way too long. No reason this thing should have been dragged out to 3 movies IMO but I guess the money is too much of a lure.

Xbox One Day One Update expected to take up to 15-20 minutes

Xbox One chief product officer Marc Whitten says the console's mandatory day one update will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes to download.

The executive told IGN: "We are optimising Xbox One so that the day one update is as fast as possible. While we're still finalizing the details, we expect that the download will take between 15 and 20 minutes for most users."

This isn't that bad TBH,remember the day one Wii U update?

Estimated time based on what? End user bandwidth in the US can vary wildly. Not everyone lives in places where they can get 50Mb cable or FIOS.

I didn't read it as being Lucas's fault. From reading the article, he was genuinely interested in making good games, even becoming excited about them when involved. I think the fault lies in the management not schooling him in game development procedure (a problem when the management itself was disconnected from the process) which led him to have an unnatural expectation of what could be done. I don't blame him for thinking it could be done. If someone like the LucasArts president were able to approach him without restriction with concerns instead of that liaison dictacting everything, then I think things could have been different. He did what he knew best, making decisions from a filmmaker's point of view which was unfortunate, instead of decisions from a gamemaker's point of view due to a disconnect.

Its clearly stated in the article that he came in and told them to make major changes after they were well into development with the 1313 game. Maybe he felt its wasn't that big of a deal but someone needed to stand up and say that's too much, but its apparent the management was a bunch of "yes men" that bowed to the mighty Lucas.
187  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Disney closes Lucasarts! on: September 28, 2013, 06:03:53 PM
Man such a love/hate when it comes to Lucas. He makes a series of movies that defines so many geek childhoods and then in the later years proceeds to drag that imagery through the mud with the prequels and crap like the special edition of the originals. Now we read that he screwed with game developers because he doesn't have a damn clue about the difference between games and movies.

I'll always appreciate what he started but man am I glad he has finally left the building.

My favorite part... you could have a relatively low-powered box sitting under your TV and stream locally from your gaming rig in another room.

Or I could just play the game on my gaming rig.

*shrug* I prefer playing on the couch on a big TV for a number of reasons.  Having access to my entire Steam library in the living room sounds great.

Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo.

Most STEAM games were made for the PC and a mouse/keyboard and I'd bet many of the ones that do support a controller came out on console too.

This is a "solution" to a problem that doesn't exist except in Gabe Newell's mind.

I actually wouldn't have minded a disc less console even if that meant always on DRM if they gave incentive for it. With being able to cut out physical media and the middleman retail store lower the prices. Come out and say all Day 1 games will be $49.99 instead of $60. You show that yea your making this change but here is a clear benefit for the consumer for going all digital. Steam enticed people to go this way on the PC with all the great sales they do, not just trying to force it down gamers throats.

The negatives seem mostly from reviewers putting this game up against the PS3 Killzone games and other shooters which isn't totally fair IMO. At the end of the day its still a handheld game, and I'm pretty sure was made by a smaller team than would be on the regular games. Plus its $40($36 for digital version) not $60. For the price I think its great and shows the Vita can be that PlayStation experience in your hand.

The reason why I see everyone switching to development on the new consoles is simple:

The three main platforms (XBO, PS4, PC) are all one platform - a PC. The XBO is a PC (AMD processor and an ATI graphic card, 8GB of RAM and 500GB HD). The PS4 is a PC (same). The PC, well, is a PC.

If you were a 3rd Party Developer, wouldn't you want to be developing solely on a single platform that allows you to release titles on 3 different systems?

This is also why the WiiU is (even more) screwed - because it's not a PC. And it's not like the 3rd Parties are seriously supporting it to begin with.

They have vastly bigger users bases for the time being and developers have been making games for them for years now. The tools/engines are well developed regardless of hardware differences. The huge cost of AAA will make publishers offer a 360/PS3 version too just like Titanfall is getting for a couple of years still for money reasons.

So apparently Battlefield 4 sucks for the PS4 and Xbox One (compared to the PC version).
Perhaps this is rose colored glasses talking but wasn't there a time when consoles outperformed PCs graphically for at least a couple of months after they were first released?
http://www.videogamer.com/ps4/battlefield_4/news/battlefield_4_on_ps4_and_xbox_one_we_need_to_compromise_in_some_places_says_dice.html

But even BF3 on the PS3 and 360 looked good.  Not PC good, but good.  Won't it be even better on the next gen consoles?

It's a relative comparison.  The articles they are referring to aren't comparing it to BF3 for PS3/360, they are comparing it to the videos of BF4 (PC) already shown, wherein apparently it looks a lot less awesome.

Those PC demos were also probably run on $500 GTX 780's too. Compare performance/detail level on a $200 card that the vast majority of gamers have and I'd bet its much closer in quality.
