1521  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Zelda Project! on: October 17, 2005, 11:22:18 PM

I tried replaying Majora's Mask recently, but I was shocked to see how dated the graphics are.  I can't believe I used to be amazed by these visuals!  The funny thing is, I can usually look right past dated graphics--I've replayed the NES Zelda very often, I still enjoy text-input Sierra games...

I think old 2d games just age better than old 3d.

Because 2D graphics don't change that much. Stuff from today looks the same as it did 10 years ago.

Anybody still playing SWG?

Anybody think this sounds like a good idea?

Some low points:

Interact with iconic characters never before seen in-game such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and the infamous HK-47 from the award-winning Star WarsTM: Knights of the Old RepublicTM.

Why I don't think stuff like MMO's based on liscensed stuff works that well. You can't let everybody be the big hero that changes the world like a single player game, and running into the named NPC's and "interacting" with them doesn't make much sense. It feels forced, like the characters there just so you can say "Hey I saw Darth Vader".

I am soooooooooooooooo loving this. LOL!  I could not agree more!!!!!!!

Gaming either descends into having to play a difficult section OVER and OVER and OVER OR not knowing what to do next.

Amen! Amen!  Amen!

This is not an isolated problem either.  I've seen the statistic many times indicating that a very small percentage of games are played until the end.  Why is that?????  That's sad.  My prediction is they they either got bored (could not figure out what to do next) OR gave up (got stuck).

Quote from: "Gratch"
One of my biggest pet peeves (I do realize I'm in the minority here) is the trend towards open-ended gaming.  There is nothing I hate more than wandering around wondering what to do next.  Many of the newer RPG's are leaning that way by giving 8,000 different quests and letting the player decide which to do first.  No thanks.  I much prefer something stricly linear like FFX where I'm lead from place to place with a strong narrative and memorable characters.

The tendency of most players to not finish a game has been around long before the GTA 'open ended gameplay' trend came about.

I like the idea of sticking with one game.  I'm mainly an RPG gamer, but I do enjoy stealth action (mainly the Thief and Tenchu variety, not the Splinter Cell or Metal Gear type.  Not into military games of any type.).  maybe I'll play through one of those again, as I thoroughly enjoyed both those games.

If you enjoyed the Thief series then I'd reccomend the 'unofficial' Thief 2 expansion that came out awhile ago(after years of waiting). It's as well done as any of the official Thief stuff.

Well its got to be designed so your "average" consumer can hook it up, so I'm sure its fairly easy too do.

Man, this must have been like a formative conflict for Hetz.

Think of all the horrific tension that went into this post, folks -- Hetz had to decide which of his masters got more pander:  should it be fair Bethesda, maker of worlds so real they're just as boring as real life, or should it be strong Microsoft, bane of innovation, baron of Bigger-is-Better?

Frankly, I'm surprised at the result!

So lame, so non-funny.

How are they lying?  They've been honest that they don't want to pay for it, and are letting gamers decide.  No one used the XBox's hard drive, so even if they included it with the 360 standard, why would developers suddenly start using it?  Come on.  You can do better then attacking the same things over and over.

The actual running of the game isn't the only way you can use the HD. Allot of MS marketing basically requires the HD. They pump up Live all the time and you are going to need the HD to really take advantage of all the stuff they talk about.. DL's like new maps/ units takes up space. They want to offer demos which takes space etc etc. You need a HD for MMO games unless you want to just port a  games that been running for years already like they did with Everquest on the PS2. The measly 64MB memmory card will barely cover the average gamers saves.

The bottom line is Allards talk of thats its for the consumer is a joke. The core system is just bad deal. Compare all that you get with the $400 dollar system with the "true" cost of the basic system and its not even that much more. The "true" part is the fact that you have to buy a memmory card anyways with the core system so its only $60 less then. Well I guess you don't if you never plan on saving a single game.

They gimped developers out of the HD to meet some stupid marketing point so they can meet the $300 price point of previous generations.

Well I'm the opposite. I have been happy with just about everything they have talked out in gameplay changes. Things like just getting rid of the annoying, time wasting pollution brings a smile to my face. I must have installed Civ 3 about 4-5 times trying to like the game but could never finish a single one. If they can pull it off I'll be happy for a long time.

I was fairly impressed with the demo. They seemed to have done a good job bringing the game over from the PC. Its not the equal of what you can get on the PC, as they didn't show any really large areas like the PC version had(at least not in the 2 demo levels). Still what they did on a machine with the specs of the Xbox its not bad.

Huh? You need to do some research. Wondows has made them tons of money, and it still does.

As for the Xbox losses. They never had a chance with how they designed the machine. Basically buying the components and doing obvioulsy bad deals like the one with Nividia where they were still paying high component costs when they were lowering the cost of the system to keep up with Sony. They have at least learned that lesson buy going the route of just contracting for the designs of the components so they own it.
1538  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Best Game You've Played This Gen? on: September 27, 2005, 06:59:22 AM
Just quick off the top of my head.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory-This one is so much better than the first two in single player I couldn't ever go back to them again. The nulti-player in both games is one of the best variations in action/FPS gaming done in years.

GTA: Vice City- I guess I should put GTA 3 here but I just loved the 80's/Miami Vice theme so much being a kid of the 80's that I spent more time just messing around with this game as I did going through the story.

KOTOR-Bioware bringing their great gameplay, character, and story telling ability to the console world. I more "casual gamer" title than than say the BG series but still had allot of fun with the game..

Rachet & Clank-Was never much of a platform player but this game was fun enough for me to keep playing it far longer than any other game of its type.

Doesn't help in the actual devlivery times to you on the east cost but helps cut a couple of days or more off the turnaround times.

Does this mean that Gamefly sends out your next game when they receive notification from the Post Office?  I guess that'd save quite a few days in theory, as the games would pass in the mail.

Yea, when they see thats its in the postal system they will ship the next game.
1541  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is there a confirmed list of launch day titles for the 360? on: September 22, 2005, 05:30:55 PM

1542  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Alternatives to Gamefly? on: September 22, 2005, 05:24:59 PM
Gamefly has recently implemented a tracking system that ties in with the postal service so they can know when a game gets dropped in the mail. Since its started it usually lists the game as returning the day after I put it in the mail. Doesn't help in the actual devlivery times to you on the east cost but helps cut a couple of days or more off the turnaround  times.

I'd like it if Netflix started offering games too or just maybe bought Gamefly and expanded its service.

I get a kick out of people who call it disasterous, "DOA", "worst idea from Nintendo", and so on.  What's the difference if you call it "innovative" from others calling it a huge mistake?

Uh oh watch out!  If you read the article you would see how it's meant to have "remote control" instead of controller.  I don't see how it's funny.  I see how it's a correct headline for the story.

Sorry you don't approve of change or an original idea or concept.

Good job lumping me with other posters to try and derail my point. Did I say anywhere that this thing is a disaster already? The "worst" I've said is I'm personally not buying into it untill I see it in real action. Actually I think your response pretty much proves my point though. Somebody questions anything that Nintendo says or does...anything and they are labeled a hater who doesn't like "origional" ideas or "true innovation".

Just becuase something is diffrent from the norm doesn't automatically make it innovative. The word is used so much anymore I doubt most people actually know the meaning of the word.

I guess nintendo knows that they can't compete w/ microsoft or sony if they just put out a high powered/super graphics system...they simply don't have the developer they're going innovative, which is definitely awesome....

let's seeif they put out any new genre of games for the revolution....

Actually I don't think Nintendo feels that way at all. What they've been saying the whole time is that they Don't want to just update hardware and graphics. They don't feel that's enough to entice new gamers or to grow the market. You can read that in all of their quotes. They're definately beating their own drum because they think that they can create a whole new market segment, so to say.[/quote]

This is nothing more than Nintendo marketing. They sit there and say that game gaming market is stagnate, its not getting new people blah blah. The facts in terms of sales say the opposite. Gaming is becoming more mainstream. More and more people are playing games they just arn't doing it on Nintendo systems.

I'll just repeat what I said in another thread. they will have to show stuff that works and is cool to get me interested at all. Just looking at the remote control part and I it just doesn't look easy to use. Holding it for long times looks like it could become uncomfortable.

Just not buying it yet...

i strongly disagree...

You cant adjust your speed with keys, with an analog stick you can adjust how fast you walk and run.  I personally just dont see the point to using keys, when you would have to hold down a button to run faster or slower.

In a game like Splinter Cell the anlog stick is nice but people don't care about speed in a run and gun shooter. Your moving(fast) or your not.

I agree. After quiting EQ I thought I was done with MMO's for awile, but after trying the free demo week they had before it launched I got sucked in again. It help that my "mentor"(I forgot the titles they used for the pyramid scheme thing they had set up) was a really cool guy that was always helping us low players out. I rember the first monthly event. They had winter come to the world and made everything white. It was a pretty basic change(just make all the textures white pretty much), but they added new monsters that started to roam around and such. It was a cool idea overall.

Yeah I think that is exactly correct. I don't really understand all the Morrowind hate from LE-yeah, the game had glaring flaws-but if you enjoyed the sandbox open-endedness of it all it could be tremendously engrossing-there was a cubic assload of things to do and so many many ways of going about it. Plus the game had more "joy of discovery" moments than any game not an MMO that I can ever remember playing.

You basically answered the question of the "hate" although I think for most is diffrent levels of disappointment. Glaring flaws are just that. Some gamers didn't mind them as much as others or liked other parts of the game enough to put up with them. This game sounds like they really did try to see what worked and what didn't and to impliment improvements where needed. I hope they can pull it off as AAA level RPG's are very few and far between these days. Not a fan of Japanese RPG's so the pickings have been slim lately.

It will be more powerful so it will look better.  That is the simple fact of putting it out later.  Did the Xbox look better than the PS2?

Thats just buying into the Sony hype machine of the Cell processor. Just because its 6 months later isn't going to mean some quantum leap in power. Plus with the Xbox MS built a machine that was well above its selling price in terms of cost to build so they could try to outdo the PS2. As we saw they lost so much money per machine they never had a chance to be profitable. Neither of them is going to do that this time around.
