If those Walmart numbers are correct it al least sounds like there getting them to the stores as fast as they can with new units every week.

1483  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Do you think MS will ever phase out the Core unit? on: November 27, 2005, 06:23:52 AM
Yea thats basically it. The $50 or so MS pays for the HD is as low as its going to get whatever the size so its basically fixed for the life of the system.
1484  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Do you think MS will ever phase out the Core unit? on: November 26, 2005, 09:01:06 PM
Quote from: "CrayolaSmoker"

The CPU and GPU savings would apply to both versions.  If you're suggesting Microsoft wouldn't drop the price of the HD'ed unit in order to make up some of the $126 loss they're taking, it's possible.  However, I'd bank on any price drops hitting both SKUs while keeping the $100 price difference through the life of the system.  I think it'd be too hard to justify NOT dropping them both to the public.

Also, why wouldn't the HD drop in price?  HDs for PCs always do.

I thinks a combination of the HD just being already about as cheap as it can get(think its $50 or so for MS in cost). I'd think MS would have to pay a certain minimmum for it since a HD manufactuer can say well if there going to devote a certain amount of production capacity for the 360 HD's they have to be paid a certain minimum since they could use that production for something newer and more profitable in the future. Also the 360 uses laptop HD's which are more expensive to make.

As to my first point. The non-HD will allow them to hit the $199 and $150 "magical" pricepoints faster. These prices have always meant a jump in sales for past consoles. I've never liked the 2 SKU idea either but thats the only reason I can think of why there doing it.
1485  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Do you think MS will ever phase out the Core unit? on: November 26, 2005, 07:08:33 AM
From what I understand the core system is that way because of costs. The HD isn't a component thats going to come down in price. Its gonna cost MS about the same throughout the life of the system. But stuff like the CPU and GPU will so I guess the core version will be able to drop in price faster. So maybe in the future you could start to see a greater diffrence in price between the two systems than it is now so MS can offer a better low cost value to get people hooked in.

Even with Blu-ray getting more support the factors of cost will keep a new DVD standard from coming for years yet. We will be at the tail end of the 360/PS3 by the time it happens.
1488  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Worst Launch Ever on: November 22, 2005, 07:10:49 PM
Not quite seeing how this has anything to do with MS(the manufacturer). They have nothing to do with all the people lining up for the system(thats a choice those people made). And the rest is on the shoulders of Sears. Just because you had a crap experience at one retailer doesn't make it "The worst launch ever".

The fact that the PS3 will be more powerful, have more developer support and debut at around the same price as the 360 has eased my mind in my decision to wait for it.  I'm really happy about the price-point.

There's nothing to prove the PS3 will debut at around the same price point. As has already been said those quotes by Stringer have been debunked. The only real statements so far are Kutagari saying stuff to the opposite(i.e. expect the PS3 to be much more expensive because its way more powerful and much more than a games system).

Show me a game on the PC that looks anywhere near as good as Kameo.

Half Life 2 and Total War Rome are two I can think of that I've recently played.  Kameo is very colorful, another game that will be more dependent most likely on your monitor vs TV, rather then PC vs 360.

Half Life 2 and Total War? Sorry, I'm going to have to disagree there. The graphical effects used in Kameo are mindblowing and stuff I have really not seen before in a PC game. Half Life 2 looks good, but it's just not as good as Kameo, heck Condemned looks better than Half-Life 2.

There are HUNDREDS of very detailed characters on screen at once in Kameo, with explosions going off around you. No slowdown at all. In Total War, I'm sorry but those soldiers are nowhere near the level of graphical detail as the soldiers and orcs in Kameo.

Guess we are going to just have to agree to disagree.

I'll disagee. HL2 overall looks as good as anything out there. The texture work and art direction is superb, and the character animation system is still the best around. Plus you don't need a killer machine to run the game well in high resolution.

The indavidual units in Total War may not look as good, but I have fought battles with over 7000 units. That would be many times the number in Kameo. Nuff said.
1491  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PC Gaming has ruined my Xbox 360 fever. on: November 19, 2005, 07:19:53 PM
People can go back and forth about what looks better as its a matter of personal taste many times as to the developers choice in art direction and such. Even then the thing that makes the 360 still so attractive is the cost. To get a game like FEAR runninng at 1600x1200 your going to need a video card that costs about as much as a whole 360 does.
1492  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is This What I Think It Is? (360 related) on: November 18, 2005, 07:49:34 PM

The system allows you to set your display resolution and aspect ratio depending on the type of video cables you use. VGA cables will give you six different resolution options: 640x480, 848x480, 1024x768, 1280x720, 1280x768, and 1360x768. Component cables will give you 480p, 720p, and 1080i resolution choices. Games are actually rendered internally at 720p, and the ATI video engine scales the video up or down to the desired resolution.

This doesn't quite jive with that screenshot since it shows an option of 1280x1024. Maybe someone who goes for the VGA adapter can post what the actual supported resolutions are of US 360's.
1493  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 - Massive Shortages at Launch on: November 17, 2005, 07:36:21 AM
Quote from: "Sarkus"
EB and GameStop took reservations based on numbers provided to them by Microsoft.  They never would have taken the reservations they did if they had been told something else.  There is no gain to either company in this situation and thus, there is no motivation for them to have intentionally mislead people.

Your kidding right? Places like EB and Gamestop started taking pre-orders last spring, long before MS would have had any indication of what they could give them. There is a gain for them in it. The pre-orders are advanced money for them months before they have to pay for the games/hardware themselves. They blame it all on MS because its easy thing for them to do. Sorry but the whole pre-order thing at stores like EB/Gamestop is basically a scam for them to get mooney out of customers. I've never understood why people want to deal with them.

1495  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 - Massive Shortages at Launch on: November 13, 2005, 07:12:57 AM
Looks like the core system could sell well at launch to just because of the people who might bite the bullet and get one of those so they can have a system at launch.

It seems like to me a lot of xbox live games are missing.  Maybe there is an issue there.

The Q&A said the top sellers and most popular Live! titles have been a priority. All the second tier titles are there because they use similar technology. Makes sense as once you get something running that uses an engine like Renderware you could easily get allot others running too.

Yeah true - nearly all system launches have ultimately faced system shortages and such.

But I'm with Dimmona here.  I don't see a "system seller", a star among the titles announced.  Practically every other console launch has had one - Mario 64.  Soul Calibur II.  Halo.  I know that some games could somehow be considered a "system seller", but, realistically, I really don't see one for the 360.

Neither the PS2 or the Gamecube had a "system seller" at launch so thats not entirely true.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the 360 itself but I gotta say that as a launch, this is shaping up to be one of the worst ever.

You never been through a console launch before then. They all start with issues like shortages here and there. Plus poeple talk about places like Gamestop or EB and assume whats going on with them is the base for whats going on with a console launch.

I also havn't seen anything that proves there's some massive shortage. The places that take pre-orders represent a small segment of the retailers that sell systems. I see poeple taking the usual internet mumbo jumbo talk and turning it into fact. I'd say how about we chill out and just see what really happens. Now that would make we'll to much sense I guess...
1499  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Theory on the Xbox 360 shortage? on: November 08, 2005, 09:00:51 PM
Guess its fun to make up conspiricies but the potential shortage problem is about as easy to figure out as you can get. MS is doing an almost simulatanious worldwide launch. Hence they need more system that usual. Hence if everything doesn't get ramped up and going smoothly fast there's gonna be shortages.

There's a link from the news showing one of those wafers with Cell chips on it. They do seem big too me vs other pictures of CPU wafers I've seen before..

On a totally random side note I've always wondered why the wafers they use are round and not square. You end up with a certain percentage of wasted space with partially etched CPU's that way.
1503  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / STALKER delayed...again on: October 31, 2005, 05:15:59 PM
Delays ok? yea sometimes there are for the best. Multiple delays over a long period that can be diffrent especially from a developer that hasn't ever actually produced anything before. There's been nothing of real substance shown of this game ever but snippits of some gameplay. I'm with the others in the thinking that this is dubious at best. Just sounds more to me like a developer that can't get the product done in the fashion that was origionally touted as(I'd bet especially getting the roaming unscripted AI characters working).

Unless you are in the opening day(s) crowd why dump your money with EB when the "deals" arn't any lower? I think old 2d games just age better than old 3d.

Because 2D graphics don't change that much. Stuff from today looks the same as it did 10 years ago.

Anybody think this sounds like a good idea?

Some low points:

Interact with iconic characters never before seen in-game such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and the infamous HK-47 from the award-winning Star WarsTM: Knights of the Old RepublicTM.

Why I don't think stuff like MMO's based on liscensed stuff works that well. You can't let everybody be the big hero that changes the world like a single player game, and running into the named NPC's and "interacting" with them doesn't make much sense. It feels forced, like the characters there just so you can say "Hey I saw Darth Vader".

Gaming either descends into having to play a difficult section OVER and OVER and OVER OR not knowing what to do next.

Amen! Amen!  Amen!

This is not an isolated problem either.  I've seen the statistic many times indicating that a very small percentage of games are played until the end.  Why is that?????  That's sad.  My prediction is they they either got bored (could not figure out what to do next) OR gave up (got stuck).

Quote from: "Gratch"
One of my biggest pet peeves (I do realize I'm in the minority here) is the trend towards open-ended gaming.  There is nothing I hate more than wandering around wondering what to do next.  Many of the newer RPG's are leaning that way by giving 8,000 different quests and letting the player decide which to do first.  No thanks.  I much prefer something stricly linear like FFX where I'm lead from place to place with a strong narrative and memorable characters.

The tendency of most players to not finish a game has been around long before the GTA 'open ended gameplay' trend came about.

I like the idea of sticking with one game.  I'm mainly an RPG gamer, but I do enjoy stealth action (mainly the Thief and Tenchu variety, not the Splinter Cell or Metal Gear type.  Not into military games of any type.).  maybe I'll play through one of those again, as I thoroughly enjoyed both those games.

If you enjoyed the Thief series then I'd reccomend the 'unofficial' Thief 2 expansion that came out awhile ago(after years of waiting). It's as well done as any of the official Thief stuff.

Think of all the horrific tension that went into this post, folks -- Hetz had to decide which of his masters got more pander:  should it be fair Bethesda, maker of worlds so real they're just as boring as real life, or should it be strong Microsoft, bane of innovation, baron of Bigger-is-Better?

Frankly, I'm surprised at the result!

How are they lying?  They've been honest that they don't want to pay for it, and are letting gamers decide.  No one used the XBox's hard drive, so even if they included it with the 360 standard, why would developers suddenly start using it?  Come on.  You can do better then attacking the same things over and over.

The actual running of the game isn't the only way you can use the HD. Allot of MS marketing basically requires the HD. They pump up Live all the time and you are going to need the HD to really take advantage of all the stuff they talk about.. DL's like new maps/ units takes up space. They want to offer demos which takes space etc etc. You need a HD for MMO games unless you want to just port a  games that been running for years already like they did with Everquest on the PS2. The measly 64MB memmory card will barely cover the average gamers saves.

The bottom line is Allards talk of thats its for the consumer is a joke. The core system is just bad deal. Compare all that you get with the $400 dollar system with the "true" cost of the basic system and its not even that much more. The "true" part is the fact that you have to buy a memmory card anyways with the core system so its only $60 less then. Well I guess you don't if you never plan on saving a single game.

They gimped developers out of the HD to meet some stupid marketing point so they can meet the $300 price point of previous generations.
