1441  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Shadowrun MMO on: December 30, 2005, 08:16:52 PM
I've never herd of this game before. Not even small blurbs in any of the magazines. Also wonder about releasing for the Xbox.
1442  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Minions of Mirth - Awesome Game! on: December 30, 2005, 12:55:44 AM
On one hand I will give the devs credit for making this game with so few people, but I have to say I think the gushing is frankly overrated and mostly because the the game is from a very small indie team. I mean as a gamer I look at what is worth spending my time with regardless of who made it and after trying the demo for awhile I don't see what puts this game above other titles.

Of course I doubt the same case will be with the PSP, but with the upcoming Bluray and HD-DVD, fitting movies on tiny 1.8gb discs is going to be tough with the next-gen DVD format right around the corner.

HD DVD/Blue-Ray stuff is irrelevent for the PSP. The movies for it are made to look good on its screen which is a set resolution that isn't going to change.

Umm wrong. Look at the complete picture. The sales numbers are always console vs the PC. The flaw there is that console is 3 diffrent platforms. The only one which has better sales consistantly is the PS2.
1447  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 in Japan: The Kancho of MS Continues on: December 25, 2005, 08:44:29 PM
I'll wait to see how the japanese developed games do. If they can deliver a few that make a magazine like Famitsu go gaga or something they might have a chance at getting some traction going. Probably not enough to ever make it worthwhile though.

Ok so if you dind'nt want to run the game to look like it was advertised in magazines and trailers it didn't run like crap.
1449  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / UT 2007 Confirmed as PS3 launch title on: December 23, 2005, 04:58:14 PM
Sony could easily get away with a spring Japan launch having only a few titles. Plenty there would buy it for just being the next PS and the blue-ray. They won't need a big number of launch titles untill it comes over here.

Nobody's still shown any proof of MS ever promising certain numbers. That one quote isn't proof its what a single person claimed. To me its still a simple matter of Gamestop and EB just taking money from people before they had any idea of what they could actually offer. Also anybody who put in a pre-order at a store like that and being like say #50 or higher in line but still thinking they were getting one on launch day was dreaming and should have known better anyways.

That 300k number is not confirmed so I wouldn't blame anyone if those numbers don't show up.

Regardless of what you were told, no one at the store level knows what's going on because they aren't being told.

My Gamestop told me that they're getting under 10 in their 'second' shipment. And at last check (when I was told the shipment info), there were still 77 preorders on file.

And the store got a whopping 14 when it first came out.

So...why are the Best Buys, Circuit Cities, and CompUSA getting all the consoles, but the 'dedicated' gaming stores aren't?

Thats sounds normal when you take into account how many stores sell the things. There are thousands of stores out there when you add up all the Targets, Walmarts, BB, gamestops etc up.
1454  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 will be scarce for some time it seems on: December 15, 2005, 05:24:38 AM
I don't see what's to chafe about. Has anybody shown any proof that MS guarenteed x number of 360's to retailers then didn't deliver? The bottom line is retailers like Gamestop just took anybody's money who came in for pre-orders without having any clue as to what they were going to get then they blame MS.

The MS hate does go a tad overboard at times...

You shouldn't have to deal with black bars or stretching, based on this from Gamespot.

The system allows you to set your display resolution and aspect ratio depending on the type of video cables you use. VGA cables will give you six different resolution options: 640x480, 848x480, 1024x768, 1280x720, 1280x768, and 1360x768. Component cables will give you 480p, 720p, and 1080i resolution choices. Games are actually rendered internally at 720p, and the ATI video engine scales the video up or down to the desired resolution.

I've seen a 360 screenshot with 1280x1024 as an option too. At least you could get 1024x768 which is a descent high res 4:3 aspect image.

The problem I have with Nintendo is that there "BIG" releases seem kinda stale to me. From the SNES to the N64 right up to the CG and DS it's like they aren't even trying anymore. Companies like EA take a ton of heat for it but so why can't we question Nintendo?

Good point. People seem to forget that they are living off of the same few characters Miyamoto created 20+ years ago. People gush over the new Mario Kart game when its basically the same thing on the N64 or the "umpteenth" Mario Party game. Then they trash EA for another Madden.

Not if the rumors are anywhere close to correct. Having double or about double the power of the GC won't put it anywhere near the other two.

I still don't buy the needing a whole new controller paradigm to get this vast untapped casual gamer audience Nintendo keeps talking about. A game like Katamari is very casual gamer friendly, easy to learn and they didn't need a whole new controller to make it.

You can make all sorts of casual gamer stuff that will work fine with standard controllers(i.e. just use a single button or two too play).

1468  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Do you think MS will ever phase out the Core unit? on: November 27, 2005, 06:23:52 AM
Yea thats basically it. The $50 or so MS pays for the HD is as low as its going to get whatever the size so its basically fixed for the life of the system.
1469  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Do you think MS will ever phase out the Core unit? on: November 26, 2005, 09:01:06 PM
Quote from: "CrayolaSmoker"

The CPU and GPU savings would apply to both versions.  If you're suggesting Microsoft wouldn't drop the price of the HD'ed unit in order to make up some of the $126 loss they're taking, it's possible.  However, I'd bank on any price drops hitting both SKUs while keeping the $100 price difference through the life of the system.  I think it'd be too hard to justify NOT dropping them both to the public.

Also, why wouldn't the HD drop in price?  HDs for PCs always do.

I thinks a combination of the HD just being already about as cheap as it can get(think its $50 or so for MS in cost). I'd think MS would have to pay a certain minimmum for it since a HD manufactuer can say well if there going to devote a certain amount of production capacity for the 360 HD's they have to be paid a certain minimum since they could use that production for something newer and more profitable in the future. Also the 360 uses laptop HD's which are more expensive to make.

As to my first point. The non-HD will allow them to hit the $199 and $150 "magical" pricepoints faster. These prices have always meant a jump in sales for past consoles. I've never liked the 2 SKU idea either but thats the only reason I can think of why there doing it.
1470  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Do you think MS will ever phase out the Core unit? on: November 26, 2005, 07:08:33 AM
From what I understand the core system is that way because of costs. The HD isn't a component thats going to come down in price. Its gonna cost MS about the same throughout the life of the system. But stuff like the CPU and GPU will so I guess the core version will be able to drop in price faster. So maybe in the future you could start to see a greater diffrence in price between the two systems than it is now so MS can offer a better low cost value to get people hooked in.

1473  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Worst Launch Ever on: November 22, 2005, 07:10:49 PM
Not quite seeing how this has anything to do with MS(the manufacturer). They have nothing to do with all the people lining up for the system(thats a choice those people made). And the rest is on the shoulders of Sears. Just because you had a crap experience at one retailer doesn't make it "The worst launch ever".

The fact that the PS3 will be more powerful, have more developer support and debut at around the same price as the 360 has eased my mind in my decision to wait for it.  I'm really happy about the price-point.

There's nothing to prove the PS3 will debut at around the same price point. As has already been said those quotes by Stringer have been debunked. The only real statements so far are Kutagari saying stuff to the opposite(i.e. expect the PS3 to be much more expensive because its way more powerful and much more than a games system).

Show me a game on the PC that looks anywhere near as good as Kameo.

Half Life 2 and Total War Rome are two I can think of that I've recently played.  Kameo is very colorful, another game that will be more dependent most likely on your monitor vs TV, rather then PC vs 360.

Half Life 2 and Total War? Sorry, I'm going to have to disagree there. The graphical effects used in Kameo are mindblowing and stuff I have really not seen before in a PC game. Half Life 2 looks good, but it's just not as good as Kameo, heck Condemned looks better than Half-Life 2.

There are HUNDREDS of very detailed characters on screen at once in Kameo, with explosions going off around you. No slowdown at all. In Total War, I'm sorry but those soldiers are nowhere near the level of graphical detail as the soldiers and orcs in Kameo.

Guess we are going to just have to agree to disagree.

I'll disagee. HL2 overall looks as good as anything out there. The texture work and art direction is superb, and the character animation system is still the best around. Plus you don't need a killer machine to run the game well in high resolution.

The indavidual units in Total War may not look as good, but I have fought battles with over 7000 units. That would be many times the number in Kameo. Nuff said.
1476  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PC Gaming has ruined my Xbox 360 fever. on: November 19, 2005, 07:19:53 PM
People can go back and forth about what looks better as its a matter of personal taste many times as to the developers choice in art direction and such. Even then the thing that makes the 360 still so attractive is the cost. To get a game like FEAR runninng at 1600x1200 your going to need a video card that costs about as much as a whole 360 does.

This doesn't quite jive with that screenshot since it shows an option of 1280x1024. Maybe someone who goes for the VGA adapter can post what the actual supported resolutions are of US 360's.

EB and GameStop took reservations based on numbers provided to them by Microsoft.  They never would have taken the reservations they did if they had been told something else.  There is no gain to either company in this situation and thus, there is no motivation for them to have intentionally mislead people.

Your kidding right? Places like EB and Gamestop started taking pre-orders last spring, long before MS would have had any indication of what they could give them. There is a gain for them in it. The pre-orders are advanced money for them months before they have to pay for the games/hardware themselves. They blame it all on MS because its easy thing for them to do. Sorry but the whole pre-order thing at stores like EB/Gamestop is basically a scam for them to get mooney out of customers. I've never understood why people want to deal with them.
