1441  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Space Sims in general on: February 04, 2006, 05:43:52 PM
I remember having fun with Prophecy. I think that was the one origionally released episodically too. I'll also add that I think Freelancer gets a bad rap because of the hype. It could have been much more but as a standard WC space shooter I thought it was fun.
1442  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is the slim PS2 faster? on: February 04, 2006, 05:21:20 PM
The only thing that might make the slim a little faster could be a faster DVD drive, for loading levels and such quicker.

Granted, it's two years out of date, but that's the last heads-up comparison I've seen.  I think Kevin Grey's estimation is a decent guess at the current numbers.  At any rate, I think it's more than fair to say that Sony is doing much better in the online realm than most give it credit for.

I don't because they havn't shown anything solid to prove people are online with the PS2 on any regular basis. Two or three million adapter sales doesn't mean that many regular players online.
1444  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Game graphics too good? on: February 03, 2006, 08:53:58 PM
To me your "warm fuzzy feeling" is just the standard the "good old days" talk of past gaming when you were a kid or a teenager. Most games were a new experience(your first FPS, RPG, RTS or whatever).

I won't argue that I think graphics get too much emphasis these days but I'll also admit a game like Battlefield 2 wouldn't quite be the same with Quake 1 level graphics.

1446  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is Halo 2 coming to the PC? on: February 03, 2006, 01:18:12 AM
I doubt we'll ever see a Halo game on the PC again. Its become MS flagship for the Xbox so I don't think Ms would let it on anything else.

The company trying to pass off the games as origionals isn't cool, but this is nothing like selling fake merchandise. The important part of the product( the game), is the same as the origional product was.

Here's a guess at system specs:  Note, these are what I'd think to be about minimum specs.

P4 2.0 Ghz or Athlon XP 2000+
512 MB Ram
Radeon 9700 / Geforce 5200
3-4 gigs HDD space
Windows XP or Windows 2000.

This is just a guess, by the by.

There's a wide diffrence in power of the 9700 vs the 5200. I highly doubt a 5200 would get you much past the game menu.
1452  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What country will Bush attack next? [RP] on: January 23, 2006, 04:27:02 PM
Maybe some sort of targeted strikes at their nuclear facilities(although Iran has really spread themselves out to make it much harder), but there won't be any sort of invasion.

1457  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Battlefield 2 Booster?? on: January 12, 2006, 04:15:42 PM
Only thing that interests me is the maps(if there any good). Don't really care about the new vehicles and weapons. I mean the Leopard/Challenger tank is basically just going to be the M1 with a diffrent looking model(maybe it will have slighty diffrent damage and/or armor values). The same with the weapons. I see mostly fluff there. The second pack looks to add some stuff that will actualy offer some new gameplay with Attack jet and scout copter...maybe.  :?
1458  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 $500!?? on: January 12, 2006, 04:07:05 PM
If MS was losing $300 per system the 360 would be another Xbox with no chance of financial success.

The same way microsoft takes a hit whenever they sell one for $300 or $400 USD.

They take a huge hit and go into negatives on console release, but get profit from the games, accessories, and other licenses that are released for the system.

According to all of the stuuf I've seen the PS3 is going to cost a fair amount more than the 360 to produce though. Console mfgs take a loss on hardware but only to a point. You can see with the Xbox what happens when you take too much of one. With the PS3 having Blue-ray I just dont see how they could match the $400 price. I think it would be too much of a a loss.
1460  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 Blu-ray HD thought / question on: January 11, 2006, 04:25:57 PM

HD-DVD *requires* HDMI connection (with HDCP copy protection) to display movies in HD.  Video content being output via component (instead of HDMI) will be downgraded to 480p resolution.

Bluray is still undetermined on copy protection.  Officially, its up to the studios whether they enable HDCP or not.  If they don't enable (ie force) it, then the movies will be able to display HD resolution via component input.  If HDCP is enforced, then HDMI is required for a HD picture, and component connections will have a downgraded 480p.

I can just see some salesman trying to explain this to a customer who wants to get into the whole HD thing with a new TV and DVD player. Assuming they even bother to do it and let the person find out when they get home and try to hook it up.

This whole thing is a frigging mess...
1461  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Killzone should have gotten more attention on: January 11, 2006, 04:20:14 PM
I think it was a medicore game too. From a tech strandpoint it clearly outstripped what the PS2 could do and it should have scaled back to make the game more playable. From a gamplay aspect I never saw anything great, just your standard stuff. Nothing that hadn't been done many times already.
1462  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Miscrosoft: What the hell? on: January 11, 2006, 04:12:03 PM
Quote from: "warning"

Yeah I understand that.  But here's the thing.  I believe a DVD hold 4.7 gigs of data.

Xbox games use dual layer disks like movies do. That gives them around 8+ gigs of usable space(its not the full 9.4 gigs the discs are rated at for some reason).

It isn't just about movies.  The PS3 will be able to play games on Blu-ray.  Now if Blu-ray wins out then that means PS3 games will be able to have more content, better graphics, etc.

In 2-3 years people will be talking about how the 360 just can't handle the really big games.

OR 360 games could span disks like many PS1 games did.  I don't have a problem swapping disks in a game.

Wether a game comes out on one disk or two(maybe even three) isn't going to determine who sells more. The actual games will and nothing more.

Nor will the HDDVD or Blueray. People talk about the advantage of the PS3 in this area. The diffrence this time vs the PS2 is there was a standard with regular DVD's, this time there's not. Using Blue Ray is a double edged sword for Sony. Yea it helps push their standard but it makes the PS3 that much more expensive to make, and with HDDVD its still not clear who is coming out on top and maybe won't for awhile.  Stuff doesn't become mass market untill there's a clear standard. The whole real "HD era" is in limbo untill one of these wins out.
1464  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / UT 2007 Confirmed as PS3 launch title on: January 04, 2006, 04:57:23 PM
Uhh sorry but there's no proof that the MGS4 video wasn't the same thing(in engine but sped up to fast framerates). Realtime by him could have meant the same thing as what the Killzone guys eventually admitted. The PS3 would have still been early beta hardware, the Nvidia chip wasn't even ready by that point.

I'm not doubting the MGS4 video, but remember, that Ghost Recon video for the 360 that was shown at E3 was also "realtime."  Funny how it doesnt even look close to the same in gameplay footage now.  I will remain a skeptic until I see gameplay footage.

The game is coming out for both Xbox and the 360 so you could be mixing up stuff. Don't see why the full game couldn't look that good. All the in engine demos of Gears of War show the 360 can pump plenty of eye candy out.

I have co-winners or I could put it as single player and multiplayer. Civ IV and BF2. Nothing on the conoles(mostly Xbox and PS2) didn't impress me that much. Some well done games but nothing great.

MGS4 was real-time.  The hair on his moustache (which have more polygons than an entire enemy soldier in MGS3!) was being rendered in real-time.  Octacon was actually in the city, being rendered in real-time.

And to me, Killzone's video isn't too far out of the question, imo.  Looking at the original, they did some really amazing stuff with that game...I shall remain optimistic!

Try reading my post again. I wasn't talking about never seeing it, just not at launch.

I don't. I wonder how much showing off those Killzone and MSG4 videos will bite them in the ass as the PS3 launch stuff won't be anywhere close to those.

I don't think it will. Epic seems to want to put diffrent titles on the systems. Have exclusives(at least console wise) for each one.

1471  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guild Wars any good as single player game? on: January 01, 2006, 04:59:11 PM
I'd say its ok single player in terms of the PvE content, although when you get higher up the bots and too frustrating. But the biggest draw of GW is its PvP arena stuff, so if you arn't interested in that then I don't know if you would get much out of the game.

1473  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Minions of Mirth - Awesome Game! on: December 30, 2005, 12:55:44 AM
On one hand I will give the devs credit for making this game with so few people, but I have to say I think the gushing is frankly overrated and mostly because the the game is from a very small indie team. I mean as a gamer I look at what is worth spending my time with regardless of who made it and after trying the demo for awhile I don't see what puts this game above other titles.

Of course I doubt the same case will be with the PSP, but with the upcoming Bluray and HD-DVD, fitting movies on tiny 1.8gb discs is going to be tough with the next-gen DVD format right around the corner.

HD DVD/Blue-Ray stuff is irrelevent for the PSP. The movies for it are made to look good on its screen which is a set resolution that isn't going to change.

Umm wrong. Look at the complete picture. The sales numbers are always console vs the PC. The flaw there is that console is 3 diffrent platforms. The only one which has better sales consistantly is the PS2.
1478  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 in Japan: The Kancho of MS Continues on: December 25, 2005, 08:44:29 PM
I'll wait to see how the japanese developed games do. If they can deliver a few that make a magazine like Famitsu go gaga or something they might have a chance at getting some traction going. Probably not enough to ever make it worthwhile though.

That's utter ran find on my machine when it came out. Sure I didn't have draw distance maxed, but it most definitely did not run like ass.

Ok so if you dind'nt want to run the game to look like it was advertised in magazines and trailers it didn't run like crap.

Sony could easily get away with a spring Japan launch having only a few titles. Plenty there would buy it for just being the next PS and the blue-ray. They won't need a big number of launch titles untill it comes over here.
