Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Quitting WoW - what's the best MMORPG for me?

I get a big laugh at the people who say WoW has a less mature crowd. Give me a break people. Every single friggin online game(RTS, MMO, FPS) has more than its share of pricks.
You go online you are going to have to deal with those types every now and then. Just a fact of the online world. Not a fun one buts its the truth.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution - touchpad controllers?
|
on: April 22, 2005, 08:59:58 AM
|
I think Nintendo is going to make a strong push for exclusive content for almost all of their third party products next generation and they are going to do it by introducing a new controller style that will make ports of games for PS3 and Xbox 2 very difficult. By introducing a new controller type they are effectively ensuring any games being built around it are exclusive to Revolution. The flaw in that logic would be I see there being less and less exclusive 3rd party content. Games are simply costing too much to make and will only go up. This generation has shown it even more with all the ports and multi-platform titles. Publishers need to spread out the costs. Only a select few first party AAA titles like MGS, Halo, Mario, Zelda can make it as an exclusive IMO. Yea they can make any games exclusive by the choice of a controller design like that(if its true) but how many publishers are simply going to say Revolution or PS3/XB2? I think thats a pretty easy answer.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Phantom Dust : Best Crack Ever??

on: April 18, 2005, 05:11:02 PM

Guess I have a a somewhat dissenting opinion. To me it felt like half a game(talking about single player). The combat was fun, but not the rest. The small area you have to keep running around in got old fast, and the dialog and story were pretty lame IMO. Its as is they spent all their time on the combat then had to slap something together at the last moment to try in finish it. Just allot of unrealized potential as a game IMO. For me I was having allot of fun after the first hour but was bored and tired of dealing with the crap outside of combat after about hour 3.

Rogues are incredibly useful, totally soloable, and the most lethal class in the game all the way up to 60. They are far too good, especially in comparison to other classes.
That is simply false. period. Your "experience" that you listed about playing Rogues just shows that you don't really have it, especially in higher levels. Playing one to the 20's means nothing. Trying out a higher level one is minimal. Play one all the way to at least the 50's then come back and talk(I'd say this about any class, becasue unless the person has then they don't know what their talking about). They arn't the best PvP. IMO a well specced priest for example played decently is right up their as the best in PvP. The biggest fallacy of all this PvP talk is that everybody talks about this as if its only 1v1 dual stuff. This isn't the reality of PvP for the most part(at least not on a PvP server) out in contested areas. All this talk is nothing more than "on paper" stuff which mostly goes out the window when you get into the game.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just got the OXM demo disk - Pariah kicks and Doom 3 licks

Ron, when can we expect a review? Pariah has got to rule. I hope your review shows that. What I saw was just fabulous.
I also noticed that it comes with a multiplayer level editor that looks brain-dead simple to operate. That's a major first for the consoles.
No its not. Timeslpitters 2 had a editor. If console games can start coming out with level editors and the next versions of consoles can accomodate a mouse/keyboard,,, the PC is finally as dead as a hammer.
Uhh yea sure...

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP Sales Numbers Revealed...

I agree with you here. If they released a 149.99 system without anything but a charger, it would sell more. Taking out the simple cloth case, basic pair of earbuds, and a 32MB memmory stick(ignoring the movie as that just a one time add-in for the initial release) isn't going to drop the price by $100.

Funny the comments about this being a poor launch or something. 600K in a week makes it one of the most successful launches ever. I mean if Sony had only made 500K availible and they had sold out would people be going "Wow the PSP is a smash Hit!"?

For me the usual turnaround time is 5 days including the days its sent/ recieved. Its not bad to me, and still makes the cost well worth it since the fee for 2 at a time per month is less than half the cost of a new game. Only recommend it for people on the west cost though.
I'll add that their "keep it" prices are pretty good too. Especially for new games a couple of months after they have been out. I assume that their cleaning out the excess stock after the initial rush of game rentals for the title.

I remember when the rumble feature was a gimmick; now people bitch if their wireless controller doesn't include it.
I remember when wireless controllers were a gimmick; now I can't imagine playing a game without one.
I remember when HDTV support was considered a gimmick; now I bitch if I play any game that doesn't support 480p.
I remember when mature content in games was considered a gimmick to sell the game; now we have people on this board who call any game not involving women in bikinis and/or extreme violence 'kiddie'.
One man's gimmick is another man's innovation, but what do I know? I'm just another jaded jerk....
You'll have to point out where all this gimmick talk about HDTV, and wireless controllers was because I never saw it. Those are cool ideas that make gaming better and its its to see how both of those would(ok wireless isn't about making gaming better just more convienent). Now the rumble features in controllers? Yea thats a gimmick.

Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW - Bored at 60?
|
on: April 01, 2005, 09:33:53 AM

I've started to slow down at lvl 53 myself. About the only thing that I still really have fun with is PvP. I'll always jump in on a fight if I see one as its allot more fun than fighting a mindless mob. Was kinda bored tonite even after I had just leveled(it was like meh another level), but happened across some alliance attacking the xroads and had a good 30-40mins of PvP fun.
I guess I have some back of my mind desire to get at least one character to max level in a MMO. WoW is the closest I've gotten. Maybe I'll still do it.
Ohh well maybe the honor system and battlegrounds will get put in sometime...

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP - When does Nintendo get scared?
|
on: March 25, 2005, 11:39:29 PM
|
Price doesn't seem to matter that much if the device has that "it factor" buzz to it though, and I think the PSP can get that, and in some ways already has. You see it with people paying $300-400 for a ipod just for music. The $100 price diffrence didn't seem to help Nintendo with the Gamecube. If the non-hardcore gaming market gives slight pause to the GBA's price tag, ranging from $100 to the current price of $70 (depending on sales & stuff), how much more are they going to pause at the $250 price tag? Not sure you really read my post there. Apple is going to pass 10 million units for the ipod soon. Thats 10 million for a $300+ machine for playing just music. Of course the 10yr old market isn't going to be affected by this machine but anyone say 15 and older? I frankly don't see Nintendo having a chance there even with the DS. I hear people who are even gamers being wary of the DS and saying they are holding off unitll they see something really neat from the 2 screens/touch stuff. The PSP fits in with the general tech/gadget crowd very well with its sleek design, great screen and movie/music ability(granted its a medioce music player overall witht the propriatary memmory and no easy to use interface for management). I'm not saying the PSP will kill Nintendo in the handheld market in a snap. But if Nintendo isn't careful I do see the potential for Sony to take the lead as a whole like they did in the home console market. I just don't think the DS is going to be a big success.

|
on: March 25, 2005, 08:35:50 AM

I think Nintendo has been conscious of Sony from the start, and if you look at the coming games for the DS they have some really cool looking games coming down the pipe. They also have 100 bucks on them in price point, and in general a different part of the market, DS is more aimed at the Teenager market and PSP is clearly aimed and the 18/21 and up market with more disposable income.

There are diffrent games that come out. Most players just don't buy them. What are devs/publishers going to do when mostly fighting games, NFS type driving games and WWII shooters are the ones that keep selling. A game like the new Oddworld comes out thats well made, refreshing and allot of fun but aparently sells poorly. :?

Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW's Patch Notes
|
on: March 09, 2005, 08:21:49 AM
|
I'd say it was a decent patch after three months if:
-It wasn't an MMORPG. -The guy next door (SoE) hadn't released six other patches of equal or greater size, both in terms of new content, player-friendly additions and bug fixes/balancings, in the same amount of time. Big deal. SOE has to do this. Their in scramble mode because WoW is kicking their ass. I think its a very good patch with allot of stuff in it. Blizzard doesn't release patches as fast for two reasons. First their games are well made for the most part on release(unlike most games). Second they make changes when they feel they are the right ones, and they won't have to go back again and redo it. Which is something I saw allot of with the first EQ. Patch then a few weeks later change again what they just modified cause it still didn't work right. I'm a fan of quality not quanity. If people want to think of SOE releasing patches left and right for EQ II is good then go ahead. I think that can be looked at another way though(a not so good way in some respects).

The rumors I've seen of the "PS3 being way more powerful" come from assuming it would use the cell chip version used as an example when they introduced it awhile ago. There's no proof that the PS3 would use that version as they would have several obsticles to show they could overcome to use that version(cost, power consumption, heat issues etc). I'd bet the cell in the PS3 will be a scaled down of what was shown. Still very powerful but not the mind blowing power poeple are going gagga about.
Remember the hype of the PS2 and its "emotion engine" chip.

Some games cost that much back in the late '80s to early '90s (which I paid). Adjusted for inflation, that's probably close to 100 of today's dollars. I have no problem paying that for a great game. That was a diffrent time. You were dealing with a niche market with the PC in the 80's and more "hardcore" fans who really wanted to play those games. We are in the mass consumer market these days and price matters. Simply look at what happens when consoles hit certain price points and see the sales jump.

Riddick being better looking than RE4 is subjective. Riddick shows some really cool stuff but they had to sacrifice in areas. The architecture and level design is very simple in most of the game. There's really not much more than hallways, mostly empty rooms and sometimes boxes around in allot of the game. The Xbox may be more powerful than the Gamecube but remember the GC came out at $100 less and Nintendo wasn't loosing money on the systems because of trying top the competition in the hardware arena.

If Raven can pull off a great multiplayer version I will send them an extra hundred bucks. Soldier of Fortune 2's multi was outstanding, the only game I logged more online hours with was the original Quake. It was truely an underplayed gem. Monolith is the developer.

I'll agree about the auction houses. I would just make the auction houses in the smaller villages/camps just be sort of offices of the major ones. So the auction houes in say Camp Mojache or Gadgetzan would be the same as the one in Orgimmar. Also wish the mounts either flew faster or they had some sort of advanced transit system. "Three months into retail and not one shred of post 60 content added to the game. Not cool. "
Wow a dev that isn't focused on just catering to the hardcore, must get to the level cap as fast as possible and complain about more, mor,e more and I want it now, now, now crowd. I'd personally love it if these players got so pissed off they left the game, and went to some other level grind treadmill. I'd be happier for it.
I havn't had a problem with the Alliance/Horde imbalance as a Horde player myself. I havn't had any problems questing or anything because of it. I'd also say at least on my server(Deathwing) the Horde seems to be better organized so maybe that makes up for it.

Based on the domination of the PS2 in japan you could say they arn't making games that adhere to the primary market their either. Nintendo is becoming a niche gaming company. They have their fan base who will want their first party stuff, they will still make good money too, but I don't see anything that will get them back into any sort of comeptition with Sony. Maybe they don't care to though and are just happy to go their own way as long as they still make a profit.
I think you're understating Nintendo's position in Japan, somewhat. Nintenodo's in second place, sure, but they're have a higher percentage of the market there than the Xbox does in the U.S. And the worldwide sales of GC and Xbox are about even. Second is a relative term when it comes to console sales. A marketing person would say this because it sounds good. I'm talking about actual numbers, and when you look at that the PS2 has vastly oustsold the GC in Japan as much as it has elsewhere. That was my point. As to mentioning the Xbox that has nothing to do with what I said(was talking about GC and PS2 in Japan only). The whole who's second between the Xbox and GC is silly. Again that stuff is for fanboys and marketing people.

The reality and this is the plain truth is there is always small group of whining complaining, will bitch about anything and everything players who will say they will leavein these games. There numbers are vastly overrated. Forums do not give a indication of the general population. There's players that will simply never, ever be satisfied with what the devs do. It occurs in every game.
