1401  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Revolution SDK only $2000 - projected price $150-$200 on: February 24, 2006, 04:35:10 PM
Quote from: "Tebunker"
300 bucks is just more of an initial investment. While what you say is very true, it's easier to absorb that 150 impact than the 300 dollar one. On top of that I can get 3 games with my console for 300 or 2 and an accessory, so it's more enticing when the platform is inexpensive. I'd rather spend 300 for a system and 3 games than 350 or 400 or even 450 or in the case of the Xbox 360 580 bucks for a 360 and three 360 games, that's almost $600 bucks and is a very big intial investment versus $300 for the same perceived value.

That theory doesn't pan out in practice as the lower price of the Gamecube had no effect on PS2 sales.
1402  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Revolution SDK only $2000 - projected price $150-$200 on: February 24, 2006, 12:52:06 AM
Never really understood the price being so much of a factor for a console. Why would someone definately pre-order for $150 but not $199? Even at say $300 when you factor in the years of the console's life span things like memmory cards, replacement controllers, and games add up more than what a console itself will.
1403  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Why can't more PC games come in DVD style cases? on: February 19, 2006, 07:25:36 AM
I kinda even miss the wierd trapezoid style ones that Edios used to put out.

How could they take a step back in carrer mode when the previous game was nothing more than you working up the rankings until you got to the top? Can't get more basic than that.

I'm sending two staff members to get roughly 16 hours of combined gameplay later this month.  You'll have our hands-on report before it hits shelves.  smile

Yeah, there are going to be press events next week in a couple cities. We should start to hear a ton of new info on the game starting next week. smile

They have already been giving magazines the chance to play an all day session with the game. The new OXM has an article about their experience with it.
1406  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Tribes 4 anyone? on: February 17, 2006, 03:57:40 PM
I could be interested(Tribes 1 was my first experience online after getting broadband and was a blast), but I'm not sure the Tribes name carries much weight anymore except to a small hardcore audience.
1407  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 to launch in September? Plus PS3 online info. on: February 17, 2006, 12:21:07 AM
Quote from: "farley2k"

The question is whether it will be better but that remains to be seen.

After seeing this I wouldn't hold your breath.

GameSpot followed up on the story, and got the following reaction from a PS3 developer who claims to be in the know regarding HUB: "They [Sony management] don't understand it. They don't understand why it's important. They don't get what developers need to make it good. They're trying to adapt due to tons of inside pressure (there are, of course, many incredibly brilliant people in Sony who have been screaming about this stuff for about a decade), but essentially Microsoft is on the cutting edge of this stuff and Sony is like your grandmother who just got her first AOL account."
1408  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 to launch in September? Plus PS3 online info. on: February 16, 2006, 07:22:49 AM
I find it hard to believe Sony would do an almost worldwide style launch too.

Anyway, I could care less about the media.  I'm just kind of suspicious of the fact that the proper authorities weren't informed.  But with this administration's disregard for the law, it really isnt all that surprising.

From the NY Times:

The local sheriff, Ramon Salinas III of Kenedy County, said the Secret Service called him shortly after the shooting occurred.

Sheriff Salinas said he sent his chief deputy, Gilbert Sanmiguel, to the Armstrong Ranch that night. He said Mr. Sanmiguel interviewed Mr. Cheney and reported that the shooting was an accident.

Took me all of about a minute to find this. Next time try doing some basic research instead of flying off the deep end with conspiracy crap.

Who cares about this stuff anyways? Leveling in WoW was easy and straightforward. I never once had to scheck stuff outside of the game when doing quests or just grinding.

Sorry but some of you people are being rather thick headed because of your political hatred of Bush/Cheney. The local authorities were notifed and the guy was properly treated. There is no law period that the media has to be notified. How hard is it for you people to understand that?
1413  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Resident Evil 4 sucks. You know it is true. on: February 13, 2006, 06:38:11 AM
Your not alone warning.

Sorry but I laugh at the apologists that say the controls are supposed to be that way. Forcing the player to use clunky un-intuative controls to force a certain gameplay is just lame. Its like some half-assed inbetween the previous RE schemes and standard controls. It just sucks, and there is no reason for it.

IMO they're making the same mistake the Fantastic 4 movie did with The Thing. The both need to be CGI characters.
1416  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Hands on with the close to final PS3 dev kit on: February 12, 2006, 06:59:03 AM
Which was funny since Sony makes 720p TV's that they market as HDTV's. Just more of the right hand not knowing what the left is saying when it comes to Sony.
1417  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Video] Splinter Cell: Double Agent on: February 10, 2006, 05:43:24 AM
I'll give the Shanghai team a pass for Pandora since they were origionally only doing the MP part of the game(which was was cool), and the SP portion was added on later.
1418  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lets talk about AI on: February 08, 2006, 04:05:16 PM
For single player fps FEAR is tops now in my book. The combat AI in that game was main reason I enjoyed it enough to finish the game. It wasn't perfect by any means but way better than what I've played mostly before. I think the UT bots are a tad overrated simply because most other FPS with bots totally suck. They arn't bad, and I guess are playable for somebody not wanting to go online but they don't replace human players.

The main flaw in RTS games I've seen is no real ability to use combined arms to beat an opponent, or take notice of a defensive layout and maybe bypass it to get at say the main base. Designers simply rely on the perfect micomanagment abilites of the computer.
1419  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Space Sims in general on: February 04, 2006, 05:43:52 PM
I remember having fun with Prophecy. I think that was the one origionally released episodically too. I'll also add that I think Freelancer gets a bad rap because of the hype. It could have been much more but as a standard WC space shooter I thought it was fun.
1420  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is the slim PS2 faster? on: February 04, 2006, 05:21:20 PM

Quote from: "Temjin"

Granted, it's two years out of date, but that's the last heads-up comparison I've seen.  I think Kevin Grey's estimation is a decent guess at the current numbers.  At any rate, I think it's more than fair to say that Sony is doing much better in the online realm than most give it credit for.

I don't because they havn't shown anything solid to prove people are online with the PS2 on any regular basis. Two or three million adapter sales doesn't mean that many regular players online.
1422  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Game graphics too good? on: February 03, 2006, 08:53:58 PM
To me your "warm fuzzy feeling" is just the standard the "good old days" talk of past gaming when you were a kid or a teenager. Most games were a new experience(your first FPS, RPG, RTS or whatever).

I won't argue that I think graphics get too much emphasis these days but I'll also admit a game like Battlefield 2 wouldn't quite be the same with Quake 1 level graphics.

The company trying to pass off the games as origionals isn't cool, but this is nothing like selling fake merchandise. The important part of the product( the game), is the same as the origional product was.

Here's a guess at system specs:  Note, these are what I'd think to be about minimum specs.

P4 2.0 Ghz or Athlon XP 2000+
512 MB Ram
Radeon 9700 / Geforce 5200
3-4 gigs HDD space
Windows XP or Windows 2000.

This is just a guess, by the by.

There's a wide diffrence in power of the 9700 vs the 5200. I highly doubt a 5200 would get you much past the game menu.

1435  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Battlefield 2 Booster?? on: January 12, 2006, 04:15:42 PM
Only thing that interests me is the maps(if there any good). Don't really care about the new vehicles and weapons. I mean the Leopard/Challenger tank is basically just going to be the M1 with a diffrent looking model(maybe it will have slighty diffrent damage and/or armor values). The same with the weapons. I see mostly fluff there. The second pack looks to add some stuff that will actualy offer some new gameplay with Attack jet and scout copter...maybe.  :?
1436  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 $500!?? on: January 12, 2006, 04:07:05 PM
If MS was losing $300 per system the 360 would be another Xbox with no chance of financial success.

The same way microsoft takes a hit whenever they sell one for $300 or $400 USD.

They take a huge hit and go into negatives on console release, but get profit from the games, accessories, and other licenses that are released for the system.

According to all of the stuuf I've seen the PS3 is going to cost a fair amount more than the 360 to produce though. Console mfgs take a loss on hardware but only to a point. You can see with the Xbox what happens when you take too much of one. With the PS3 having Blue-ray I just dont see how they could match the $400 price. I think it would be too much of a a loss.
1438  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 Blu-ray HD thought / question on: January 11, 2006, 04:25:57 PM

HD-DVD *requires* HDMI connection (with HDCP copy protection) to display movies in HD.  Video content being output via component (instead of HDMI) will be downgraded to 480p resolution.

Bluray is still undetermined on copy protection.  Officially, its up to the studios whether they enable HDCP or not.  If they don't enable (ie force) it, then the movies will be able to display HD resolution via component input.  If HDCP is enforced, then HDMI is required for a HD picture, and component connections will have a downgraded 480p.

I can just see some salesman trying to explain this to a customer who wants to get into the whole HD thing with a new TV and DVD player. Assuming they even bother to do it and let the person find out when they get home and try to hook it up.

This whole thing is a frigging mess...
1439  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Killzone should have gotten more attention on: January 11, 2006, 04:20:14 PM
I think it was a medicore game too. From a tech strandpoint it clearly outstripped what the PS2 could do and it should have scaled back to make the game more playable. From a gamplay aspect I never saw anything great, just your standard stuff. Nothing that hadn't been done many times already.

Yeah I understand that.  But here's the thing.  I believe a DVD hold 4.7 gigs of data.

Xbox games use dual layer disks like movies do. That gives them around 8+ gigs of usable space(its not the full 9.4 gigs the discs are rated at for some reason).
