So I decided to use part of my tax refund to buy the new 3ds xl, but it appears Amazon doesn't have any pre-order stock... wth...

Anyone has any insight on why?

I don't recall the specifics why but Amazon is not an official retailer of Nintendo hardware.

163  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Jupiter Ascending on: January 23, 2015, 11:34:50 PM
It's another ambitious movie from the Wachowski's (The Matrix trilogy). Their movies are pretty hit or miss to most people. Their last one, Cloud Atlas bombed financially and was a pretty love it or hate it movie. I happen to think the Wachowski's are brilliant, and I was one of the love it category with Cloud Atlas, so I am totally psyched for Jupiter Ascending. You can never really tell how good a story is just from the trailer, but visually, it's pretty incredible.

I bought the Wii U in anticipation of Bayonetta 2. There ARE other great games for it, and aside from Xenoblade Chronicles X, the open world Zelda game is coming too.

In other words, resistance if futile. slywink

I upgraded mine to 2TB already and got a 500 GB external drive out of it as well.

Pretty easy, just get one of these and swap the drive with the PS4 drive.

Oh, I've already done that. The Nyko thing lets you use a drive larger than 2TB though.
166  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nyko Data Bank for Playstation 4 on: January 07, 2015, 06:31:58 PM

I'm tempted because who wouldn't like to have a massive hard drive in a PS4 instead of the laughably small default 500GB one. Only thing is that Nyko hardware is not the greatest quality and there is no info yet on drive performance in that enclosure. A product to keep an eye on though.

Wow, this is just remarkable. Jed York went on KNBR radio this morning and was absolutely grilled quite aggressively by Brian Murphy, the morning host and ex-sports reporter for the SF Chronicle. He didn't hold back at all in his questioning and asked the tough questions everyone has been wondering. The result is York coming across as a total hypocrite and contradicting himself repeatedly. I give York credit for not hiding and trying to explain things from his perspective but holy crap, he might have been better off just not even going on the air.

In any case, here is the transcript in all its crazy glory:

The thing about the 49ers under the Yorks is that the Harbaugh hire is the anomaly.  Losing him seems to be business as usual, and is a major reason why we gave up our season tickets a few years ago.

Baalke actually hasn't done too bad of a job - eg the Kaepernick contract is nowhere near the albatross that the Cutler contract is, and the 49ers have generally stayed out of cap hell, but he has had some huge misses in the draft, likely in places where there was contention with Harbaugh.  The biggest to me was not resigning Delainie Walker and then passing on Coby Fleener in the draft for AJ Jenkins.  This move completely trashed Harbaugh's 2+ TE offense that took the 49ers to the Super Bowl, and the offense never quite looked the same afterwards.  Whiffing on LaMichael James was another issue.

Of course, letting Harbaugh go will be the biggest.  They can't afford to get this wrong.  If they can't retain Fangio as well, I see a near future of mediocrity with a downward trend, ending with Baalke's firing.

Listening and watching the BS spin doctoring York and Baalke are doing today and yesterday to the media, it's flat out disgusting. Jed talks about "winning with class", doing things the 49er way, and invoking the name of Bill Walsh and the Super Bowl or bust attitude over and over, but their actions not only under him but also under his dad back in the dark days after Mariucci was fired flies against everything he is spewing. As a fan, it insulting, confusing and frustrating as hell. Everything he is saying is so passive-aggressive. He wants to blame Harbaugh for stuff but won't come out and say it, suggesting everyone, including him, is at fault.

Fucking aggravating.

Two games really stood out for me this year.

Child of Light: as an RPG, it wasn't terribly sophisticated, but as an artistic effort it was really really well done. The art style of the graphics was beautiful and the music was excellent.

Shadows of Mordor: from beginning to end it was an awesome game. Great graphics, music and gameplay. The system of Orc promotion and progression was interesting and different, although I'm not sure how much of an effect it had on the final outcome. The voice acting was movie quality too. I don't finish too many games but this was one that engaged me the whole time and I never got tired of. I felt motivated to finish every mission and find every collectable item. If there's going to be a sequel, it'll be an insta-buy to me.
171  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Terminator: Genesis + a TV series? on: December 16, 2014, 11:43:12 PM
It's not about being cynical. It's about the media saturation everyone has access to from every online source imaginable. In today's world, long before any movie is out, you can find out just about anything and everything about it before setting foot into the theater. I 100% guarantee that the plot of the new Star Wars movie will be leaked/stolen/posted months before anyone will see it. It's this kind of ease of access in media that makes it just about impossible for a movie to come out of nowhere and really surprise people in a magical way that Blackjack was referring to. IMO, people are even conditioned to find out everything they can about a movie before paying to see it. I really doubt a lot of people want to purposely avoid reading/watching anything about a movie in order to just walk in thinking "I wonder what this is about".

I'm not being critical of this attitude, just saying it's a product of today's social media and online saturated world we live in, and it's changed the movie watching attitudes of everyone. Nothing cynical about that.

173  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ubisoft - A sinking ship? on: December 12, 2014, 08:34:39 PM
If you're going to compare Ubisoft to any company, a more relevant comparison would be EA.

Thing is, as high profile a disaster as AC Unity has been, it's not like Ubisoft has been a flaming plane crash of a company. The reality is with any mega-publisher of their scale, they are going to run the gamut of successes and failures. Sure Unity and The Crew have been the more recent missteps, they also release a number of successful franchise games in the last year. I thought Assassin's Creed Black Flag was their best AC game by far. While it's had no publicity, AC Rogue has had decent reviews even if it is a derivative lesser release. Far Cry 4 has had good reviews. Rayman, Rocksmith are well regarded. Also, Ubi published what I consider two of the most underrated games in the last year. Valiant Hearts and Child of Light.

Anyhow, as for a direct comparison between Ubi and Naughty Dog, I don't see it.

And Shadows of Mordor is a phenomenal game (not an Ubisoft game btw).

According to the movie's IMDB page, they shot 80% of the movie with practical effects, which is about as old skool as you can get nowadays on a movie of this type.
176  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Mad Max Returns in Fury Road on: December 10, 2014, 07:40:10 PM
Whoa, didn't even catch that until you brought it up.

The trailer is all sorts of crazy. Reading up on the background of this, it's a reboot but George Miller decided to go straight to the apocalyptic wasteland story rather than retell the origin story from the very first Mad Max movie. Smart move IMO. The Road Warrior was the best out of all the Max movies and the simplest of stories and it sound like Miller wanted to return to that. I'm really looking forward to this new movie.

I understand that, but I would expect more professionalism from coach and the QB. It's ridiculous for Kaep to give one or two word answers to legit questions. Look, I watch the replay of many of the press conferences and obviously there are certain reporters who are just incredible dicks. Guys like Lowell Cohn and his amateur level son Grant, Tim Kawakami, Ann Killion to name a few. But there are other reporters who are respectful and ask questions I would not consider outrageous. As a fan, I want to hear what their thought process is. Look at the difference compared to Frank Gore and Vernon Davis. Things are bad and they face the questions and answer them honestly. The press doesn't seem to have any problems with them.

Kaep, when he's on, is an otherworldly talent, but as a fan it is so frustrating to see his behavior. He is so obsessed with this world is out to get me attitude that it's distracting. He should spend less time worrying about what people are saying to and about him and spend more time on figuring out how he can improve his game.

Whatever though. The whole season is a train wreck and could have been avoided by all parties involved. Everyone should share the blame.
179  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [NFL 2014] Week 14 on: December 09, 2014, 08:06:38 PM
If they hire Jim Tomsula as the head coach, then we'll know all they wanted was a 'yes man'. Now if they go out and get someone like Sean Payton, then maybe there's hope.

Problem is we have no freaking idea what they are thinking. Baalke talks like there is nothing wrong with the relationship with Harbaugh and other than the infamous Thanksgiving night tweet, who knows what wonderboy Jed York is thinking. I thought maybe he'd be different and be more like Eddie D, but in the end he's coming across as just another clueless York family member.

I agree that it's crazy to fire Harbaugh over what amounts to butt hurt feelings but it doesn't help their cause when he and Kaepernick are so openly defiant and often hostile to the local media. As a fan I want to understand things from their perspective both in good times and bad times, but it's hard to sympathize with either of them at this point.

While I enjoyed Courtney's work in Spartacus, can Hollywood please stop trying to jam him Jai down our throats as the New Action Star Du Jour? Just reminds me that the late Andy Whitfield probably would've done much better work in movies here had he lived to get the chance.  tear

And please let's have a moratorium on "person hanging from a person hanging from a person, dangling off a bridge or rooftop or helicopter or etc. etc." There has GOT to be a different signature action scene someone can come up with, right?  icon_razz

imho the beauty of the first film (my brother and I did see it when it opened in 1984) is not something you can recapture today. You just can't do this type of film with "practical" FX on a shoestring budget and actually surprise people. You can't get people to go to a Terminator film and wonder, "What is this about it? It's probably terrible," because you don't know what to expect, and then deliver a wonderful experience instead. Now it's just a long in the tooth franchise dragging around too much expectation and hype.

They can reimagine it and reboot it and recast aside from Arnold along with a dozen digital FX houses painting every frame digitally and trying to make Arnold looking young again, but I suspect that's not going to do any better box office than Jonathan Mostow's Terminator 3, which actually did pretty well overseas but nobody afik fondly remembers it.

Exactly how I feel. Sadly, I think the same thing can be applied to the new Star Wars movie as well. Not to say that it won't be a really good movie, but the sense of wonder and magic is near impossible to capture in today's media saturated world.

I don't know. It seems like a reboot/alternate/parallel universe story sort of like the Star Trek reboot movies. I was skeptical at first, but I'll give it a chance. It'll either be a flaming wreck of a mess or a pleasant surprise.

I subscribe to a similar thing called Nerd Block. Same concept of a monthly subscription where you get random mystery items. The kicker for me though is that every month comes with a Shirt Punch t-shirt. I generally like Shirt Punch t-shirts so those are usually the thing I look forward to the most. The quality and "coolness" of the other items will vary wildly from month to month, I am sure as it does with Loot Crate. Nerd Block also has several other theme subscriptions in addition to the main "classic" subscription. They have cheaper ($20) subs for boys and girls. I tried both but canceled the boys sub because I found the quality of loot from month to month pretty poor. The girls Nerd Block surprisingly has been very good so far and my 10 year old daughter loves it. They also have a horror Block and an Arcade (gaming) Block. I have not tried either of those because it would be way too expensive to subscribe to 4 of these things at one time.

There is a thread over on the messageboards where there is increasing evidence that LucasArts games will be coming, maybe as soon as tomorrow. There are supposedly a total of about 30 games due to be released over time but the initial group will consist of:

Star Wars: X-Wing Special Edition
Star Wars: TIE Fighter Special Edition
Sam & Max Hit the Road
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Personally, this is incredibly exciting. X-Wing and Tie Fighter are no brainer purchases, as well as the Indy game. I would assume that The Dig and Full Throttle will be coming later, which are two more must-haves to me.
