I recommend Child of Light, Ubisoft's downloadable beautiful RPG. As RPGs go, not terribly complicated or deep, but the watercolor style graphics are awesome.

Another vote for Strider, especially if you like Metroid-vania style games.

Whoops, it's the remake BGC 2040. Still worth seeing though.
164  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Anime thread of anime on: July 22, 2014, 06:22:01 PM
Kill La Kill is on Netflix and Hulu.
Attack on Titan is on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon.
Trigun is also on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon.

A couple more that I can think of:
Bubblegum Crisis on Netflix - old school 80's anime that is vaguely inspired by Blade Runner
Rurouni Kenshin on Crackle - about a samurai who protects people in need. Really well done series. Kind of odd because there is an underlying violence that is contrasted with the slightly more whimsical animation style.

I'll have to check those out. I love me some good mecha anime.  icon_cool

It's not out on any streaming service that I know of but Space Cruiser Yamato 2199 is a reboot/remake of the original Space Cruiser Yamato (aka Starblazers) TV series. The animation is superb and there is enough in the story that is different from the original that it still feels fresh.

I actually liked Kill La Kill. I went into it not knowing anything about it other than the crazy costumes that some female cosplayers were making based on the show. The series is good but holy cow it is a hyperactive, over the top crazy show.
166  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Anime thread of anime on: July 22, 2014, 05:46:36 PM
Trigun and Cowboy Bebop are classics. Can't go wrong with either.

Netflix has Knights of Sidonia, which is a mecha based show. I've always been partial to mecha anime shows and it's nice to see since mecha isn't as popular these days for some reason.

There is also Attack on Titan and Kill La Kill. Both seem pretty popular although I didn't really connect with Titan. Kill La Kill is just...well let's say it's pretty over the top.

I finished up the season watching the last three episodes last night. Overall, a really well done season and the suspense during those last three episodes was really awesome. The president's conversation with the British PM at the end was really sad and poignant, and the final exchange between Jack and Chloe was a really nice emotional touch. I hope Fox renews 24 for another season. They can't leave a badass like Jack rotting away in a prison in Russia. That's no way to go out. Ideally, Chloe and Jack's mercenary friend are coming up with some plan to spring him from prison and save the world one more time.

Arise!  icon_biggrin

I just got a Wii U Deluxe over the weekend. When this thing first came out, I swore I would never get one, but the temptation was too much. There seems to be a critical mass of good games out or coming out in the next year that makes it worth getting now. I got Mario Kart 8, which is a total blast. I downloaded the Zelda HD remake as my freebie game and it looks pretty awesome. A couple of things were really annoying thought. First, the initial setup is such a long and convoluted process, particularly since you have to download what seems like a fairly large software update after connecting to the internet. Second, I knew the pad battery life was not great but holy cow, does it suck. I had to do a full recharge the next day. I ordered a Wii U Pro Controller which apparently has a really long charge capacity so while the pad is pretty cool in concept, I think I'll do most game playing with the other controller instead. I've seen a larger capacity battery for the pad on Amazon. Anyone have any experience with these?

The game I am really looking forward to is Bayonetta 2. I loved the first one and played the hell out of it on the Xbox 360, so the Wii U will be worth it just for the sequel.

Interesting. I wonder how faithful it will be to the original anime, which was pretty graphic.

Did anybody else end up watching this (Live Another Day)?  Wrapped up last night, writing and direction in this last episode felt really choppy and discombobulated, and I found the last couple of plot "twists" irritating and contrived.  Pretty disappointing after a good start to the season, and I really liked Yvonne Strahotski in it.  I suspect the show won't be back, but who knows.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Really?  After all they did to bring Audrey back, this is how they kill her, without even a scene with Jack in the final episode?  I found it almost insultingly annoying, pretty much a slap in the face.  I call it the Game of Thrones effect.  Everyone and their brother now apparently thinks it's cool to kill off main characters for shock value.  The whole point of bringing the show back, I thought, was to service the fans with a last hurrah (or two).  Instead I guess they thought it would be cool to kill off one of the series' best characters (again) with an unceremonious random shot.  Sadly the only actress Kiefer Sutherland has ever shown any palpable chemistry with is Audrey, so it was pretty stupid all in all.  Oh well, time to move on.

It actually kind of makes sense in that:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Just about everyone Jack really cares about eventually gets whacked.

Thanks for all the recommendations. There are some good looking games in there so we'll check them out.
173  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Question about Dixit on: June 27, 2014, 05:57:29 PM
Actually we don't have much in the way of co-op games. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Forbidden Island. If you have any good recommendations, that would be most appreciated.

Dixit was appealing because the sessions seemed like they did not take too long to play. My family doesn't have a ton of time to spend playing board/card games, so reasonably quick games are what appeal to us.
174  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Question about Dixit on: June 27, 2014, 12:32:11 AM

Unfortunately, an overwhelming percentage of people do not recommend the game for a group of three. That's a bummer. We rarely game with more than three people. Oh well...
175  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Question about Dixit on: June 26, 2014, 06:55:02 PM
I just read the review of the Dixit: Origins expansion on the GT front page and it's piqued my interest.

I was wondering though. It seems to be the kind of game that is more fun with a larger group of people. Anyone know how well the game plays with the minimum three people?

No kidding. Kaep gets a shit ton on money if he keeps getting better each year and the Niners can cut bait at any time if they feel like he is not giving them what they want on the field or if he gets hurt. Baalke should get a trophy for hammering out a deal that seems to satisfy both sides so much.
178  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NFL 2014 OTAs on: June 04, 2014, 11:33:38 PM
Considering what Cutler and Flacco are making, Kaep's deal isn't all that outrageous in the context of what upper tier QBs make in the NFL. Yeah, it's a lot of money, but I'm okay with it because it wasn't that long ago that the Niners were trotting out the likes of Tim Rattay, JT O'Sullivan, Shaun Hill and shellshocked Alex Smith at QB.

180  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: iPhone/iTouch app and game thread on: May 28, 2014, 04:29:31 PM
Me too. The graphics are hilariously terri-bad. It's like 6 year old art quality, but man, the gameplay design is genius. the dev says he is willing to bring the graphics up to par at some point in a future update, but that would kind of kill some of the charm for me.

I really hope the Niners somehow manage to draft David Fales out of San Jose State. I've seen some of his games this past season and the kid looks about as pro-ready as any college QB. Big, mobile, strong arm and accurate. I was at the home game against Navy and while Navy's defense isn't exactly top caliber, Fales was incredible with his athleticism and arm strength.

Yeah the whole pants episode was pretty suspicious.

I was laughing when Spencer was walking up the creek bed and Woo just suddenly came out all "oh hey what's up. I'm taking a walk". Thank goodness it's a reality show because his acting job there was stupendously bad.

I think Doofus is LJ. Athletic and physically fit but dumb as a log.

crybaby Nooooooo! Boobs McBooberson is out, although can't say that I am surprised considering she was a self entitled, lazy ass sloth around camp, but it's sad knowing her epic bouncing chest will no longer be hypnotizing us.

As for Kass, aka crazy old lawyer lady, good god she is a trainwreck waiting to happen. For a minute I almost thought she would switch back to her original group but her hatred of Boobs seemed to reign her crazy in this week.

Spencer seems to be picking up momentum and emerging as a smart player. For the most part, the contestants are all pretty harmless or clueless but the show will continue to be entertaining as long as Kass and Tony are still in it. There are too many people sitting back just waiting for things to happen. Someone or something needs to stir things up and generate some chaos.

Is there even going to be a season 2? I have not seen any news that there will be one.

It certainly was not what I expected from a pirate show. Surprisingly, a lot of it was land locked in the town dealing with political and interpersonal drama. Kind of disappointed that there was not much in the way of stuff out at sea. The end with the battle against the Spanish galleon was pretty cool though.

Clearly they edited out a lot of stuff that went into explaining why LJ did not play the idol, because the way the events unfolded, it would have been completely logical for him to play it. Too bad though. I liked Cliff and thought he was a pretty smart player. He probably fell trap to one of the oldest adages in Survivor. The moment you start getting really confident about your situation, that's when you usually get blindsided.

I have to agree with the general consensus about the older lady from Boston. Oh lord she is annoying as hell and has a laugh like nails on a chalkboard.

I'll remain completely engaged with this season as long as Morgan is still in the game. Her bouncing boobies are a sight to behold.  drool

Oh man, the speaker scam out of the back of a van is LEGENDARY. Back in the late 80's I was hit up at a bank walking up to the ATM. Two guys in a plain white van came screaming around the corner, threw open the door and tried to sell me a pair of speakers they said they had extra stock of due to an inventory mistake. I'll never forget their sales pitch:

"The subwoofers have nitrogen cooling!"

Wow, really Mr. Wizard? Needless to say, I laughed at them and walked away.

So Ron, without giving anything away, were you ultimately able to beat those sadistically hard boss battles? It's one thing if those fights are hard, but if they at least are beatable in a mildly realistic way then I guess it's tolerable.

I was, but man...they always felt totally unfair.  I have 2000HP versus their 400,000HP?  And I can only heal with my 6 potions, but he has a skill that allows him to get all of his HP back once?  0_0   You really feel like the cards are stacked against you, and those fights take upwards of 15-20 minutes each.   It feels a little like a combination of luck, trial and error, and some laser-precision with blocking, and even then even the most minor of slips can kill you.   One boss had an attack that did just shy of 2k worth of damage if you missed the block.  No way to beat him when you have 1400HP (the staying in one area thing I mentioned), but if you do a bunch of side quest grinding and get up to 2k HP you can live through it, once.  smile     It's just odd to go from "this is kinda challenging" in a good way to "WTF?  How was I supposed to prepare for this?!" kind of moments.

Sheesh, the Final Fantasy series really has jumped the shark. I just picked up the game but I have a feeling it's going to be one of those experiences where it stops being fun and becomes just a chore to finish for the sake of finishing it.

There must be some correlation with how much of a Lego maniac you were growing up. I thought it was one of the best "kids" movies in a very long time. I found it clever, incredibly funny and surprisingly touching at the end. Then again, I still build Legos as an adult. My 9 year old daughter loved it too.
