161  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Mad Max Returns in Fury Road on: May 16, 2015, 05:11:43 AM
Saw it today. Quite possibly the best action movie I've ever seen in my life. It was that good. It's really amazing that since the invention of modern cgi, action movies have changed so radically over the years. By going old school with predominantly practical and real stunts it results in editing that is more deliberate and visible to the viewer. No more frantic quick, blurry cuts where you almost get a headache from the sheer kinetic edits and lose track of what is happening. By editing longer sequences during the chaos you can really appreciate the detail and the choreography of the fights, the chase, and the mayhem.

The story is pretty simple, which is the case with all the previous Mad Max movies but there is just enough character development and back story to really give it another level beyond mindless action. It was a little surprising how Max was not such a main character in the story. Furiosa had as much if not more emphasis. Max was more along for the ride than the focal point but I guess that was the case in Road Warrior as well, which Fury Road reminded me of. One thing I really really liked was how epic it was, more than any of the other previous movies. Some of the wide panoramic shots of the chase as well as of the desert were beautiful. The scene where Furiosa is kneeling on the sand late in the movie during one of the big plot reveals was such a spectacular visual image. I need to find that image to make it a desktop picture.

I have a feeling this movie is going to gain momentum over time because the word of mouth will spread about how good it is. As much as Avengers is presumed to be the movie of the summer season, Fury Road deserves it just as much. I'm ready to see it again immediately, which I have not felt about a movie in a very long time.

I'm convinced that IMAX and Dolby Atmos are marketing gimmicks that just mean theaters can crank the volume to 11, which is skull busting volume.

There was one person in my group that didn't enjoy Fury Road, and it was for a legit reason IMO.
During one of the last released trailers for Fury Road, there is a dude playing a flame throwing electric guitar during a destructive car chase.
If you think this is ridiculously awesome, you will most likely enjoy the hell out of this movie.
If you think that a scene like that would be ridiculously stupid, probably not going to enjoy Fury Road.

LOL, I personally thought the flame throwing guitar was sheer inspired genius, thus I guarantee I will enjoy the hell out of this movie.

My brain just exploded. So IN it's not even funny.

Pretty much this.  Absolutely epic.

The other thing that blew my mind was during the Episode 7 panel live broadcast, they brought out the fully functioning remote controlled BB-8 ball droid on the stage, proving that it was not a CGI creation but a working mechanical prop. I'm sure it works based on some complex magnetic system but it was a magical moment when it rolled out. I'm as jaded as any movie fan nowadays and that was an "oh wow" moment for me. JJ Abrams discussed the fact that they wanted to shoot as much of the movie as they could using practical sets and props. Sure the movie will have a ton of CG effects, but to Abrams, a lot of the magic of the original trilogy is that you felt like you were there because the world and the vehicles felt so real. Something the prequel trilogy really lacked in it's overuse of blue screen and CG everything. That aspect alone has me so excited and I have all the faith in the world that episode 7 is in very good hands.

Between Marvel and Lucasfilm, the Disney corporation has pretty much become the overlords of all of nerd-dom, and I don't even mind one bit!  icon_smile

So the PS4/XBO version came out today and the discussion online suggests that the game is slightly borked compared to the original PS3/360 version. The jump to 60 fps, first seen in the PC version, results in  weapons wearing out at a much faster rate (2x allegedly). While this was "fixed" in the PC version via a user made mod, no such fix for the next gen console versions and the developer says this difference is as designed.

Wondering if anyone has experienced this with the PC version? I bought the game today, but have not unwrapped it. Going to hold out to see what develops further from this.

I've been streaming one guy's live feed for going on three hours and counting now. I have the sound turned down but still on if something loud happens and every 15 minutes or so I hear "no, no, NOOOO!" or "WHAT THE FUCK!!??" and when I turn to see what happened, I see the post death loading screen. I give him credit though. As frustrated as he sounds, he's been plugging away at it for hours.

Very entertaining to watch though.

179  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4] The Order: 1886 on: February 23, 2015, 07:14:05 PM
I finally got to play a bit of this. I am up to chapter 3, probably where TiLT was when you posted your initial impressions. I have to say, your observations are right on target. This game is unabashedly all about the cinematic storytelling experience and less so about game mechanics. In my limited time with the game, the thing that struck me was just how good it looked. Years ago everyone sort of wondered whether or not console game graphics could get to the point where the whole thing could be cut scene quality, and not just limited to the jarring transition to non-interactive movie sequences. I think with this game that point has clearly been reached. The graphic fidelity is so good and transitions so seamlessly from movie to gameplay that it's quite stunning. I don't actually mind the bits where you cannot run and are forced to walk at a slow pace because I can take my time to see the little details the developers have put into the environments. There's some pretty amazing stuff in this game world to look at, which honestly no one would even bother with if the game was a high adrenaline, fast paced shooter.

That being said, I can see why a fair number of reviews have been negative. Sony themselves sort of set the game up to fail by not being transparent with their marketing of the game. I don't recall any of the preview material ever emphasizing the cinematic nature of the storytelling. There were a lot of videos of the shooter aspect though so I bet that set the expectation that the game was a pure squad based shooter. And as TiLT suggested, the Battlefield and Call of Duty games over the years have pretty much primed the game playing public to expect all first/third person shooter games to be fast paced, chaotic experiences.

The game does have some shortcoming though. No multiplayer is significant and a bit of a missed opportunity. Multiplayer in the awesome game world that the developers created would have been unique. I assume the game really has no replay value once it's finished. These two factors alone make the $60 cost pretty dicey.  All in all, I like the game a lot. It's certainly a polarizing game but I hope it does well enough for Sony to greenlight a sequel.
180  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4] The Order: 1886 on: February 20, 2015, 11:30:07 PM
TiLT's description is exactly the type of game I like and appreciate. I too am weary of full blast shooters that are pretty much amped up all the time. Maybe it's my advanced age icon_razz but I like games that are more deliberate. I watched a bit of Giant Bomb's quick look of the game and the thing that struck me is that the game just looks really awesome. The graphics and the world they created are clearly the draw here. I don't mind relatively short games if they are well done. The only thing that the GB guys said that worries me is that they suggested the story of the game is driving towards an end that never gets fully realized, whatever that means. Maybe it's a setup for a sequel. They said the ending wasn't Halo 2 bad, but it did leave a lot to be desired.

Anyhow, I pre-ordered and received the edition of the game with the Galahad statue. Looks really nice and I look forward to playing the game.

Jupiter Ascending in its opening weekend made all of 19 million, which qualifies it as a bomb of flaming wreck status considering it cost 179 million to make (ouch).
I think the Wachowski's make great, if often flawed, movies but I can't say that I am surprised that JA crashed and burned so hard.

Variety had an interesting perspective on the consequences of the failure of the movie:

The top movie of the weekend was Spongebob Squarepants at 56 million. Oh cruel irony...

It's another ambitious movie from the Wachowski's (The Matrix trilogy). Their movies are pretty hit or miss to most people. Their last one, Cloud Atlas bombed financially and was a pretty love it or hate it movie. I happen to think the Wachowski's are brilliant, and I was one of the love it category with Cloud Atlas, so I am totally psyched for Jupiter Ascending. You can never really tell how good a story is just from the trailer, but visually, it's pretty incredible.

Pretty easy, just get one of these and swap the drive with the PS4 drive.

Oh, I've already done that. The Nyko thing lets you use a drive larger than 2TB though.

I'm tempted because who wouldn't like to have a massive hard drive in a PS4 instead of the laughably small default 500GB one. Only thing is that Nyko hardware is not the greatest quality and there is no info yet on drive performance in that enclosure. A product to keep an eye on though.

Wow, this is just remarkable. Jed York went on KNBR radio this morning and was absolutely grilled quite aggressively by Brian Murphy, the morning host and ex-sports reporter for the SF Chronicle. He didn't hold back at all in his questioning and asked the tough questions everyone has been wondering. The result is York coming across as a total hypocrite and contradicting himself repeatedly. I give York credit for not hiding and trying to explain things from his perspective but holy crap, he might have been better off just not even going on the air.

In any case, here is the transcript in all its crazy glory:

The thing about the 49ers under the Yorks is that the Harbaugh hire is the anomaly.  Losing him seems to be business as usual, and is a major reason why we gave up our season tickets a few years ago.

Baalke actually hasn't done too bad of a job - eg the Kaepernick contract is nowhere near the albatross that the Cutler contract is, and the 49ers have generally stayed out of cap hell, but he has had some huge misses in the draft, likely in places where there was contention with Harbaugh.  The biggest to me was not resigning Delainie Walker and then passing on Coby Fleener in the draft for AJ Jenkins.  This move completely trashed Harbaugh's 2+ TE offense that took the 49ers to the Super Bowl, and the offense never quite looked the same afterwards.  Whiffing on LaMichael James was another issue.

Of course, letting Harbaugh go will be the biggest.  They can't afford to get this wrong.  If they can't retain Fangio as well, I see a near future of mediocrity with a downward trend, ending with Baalke's firing.

Listening and watching the BS spin doctoring York and Baalke are doing today and yesterday to the media, it's flat out disgusting. Jed talks about "winning with class", doing things the 49er way, and invoking the name of Bill Walsh and the Super Bowl or bust attitude over and over, but their actions not only under him but also under his dad back in the dark days after Mariucci was fired flies against everything he is spewing. As a fan, it insulting, confusing and frustrating as hell. Everything he is saying is so passive-aggressive. He wants to blame Harbaugh for stuff but won't come out and say it, suggesting everyone, including him, is at fault.

Fucking aggravating.

Two games really stood out for me this year.

Child of Light: as an RPG, it wasn't terribly sophisticated, but as an artistic effort it was really really well done. The art style of the graphics was beautiful and the music was excellent.

Shadows of Mordor: from beginning to end it was an awesome game. Great graphics, music and gameplay. The system of Orc promotion and progression was interesting and different, although I'm not sure how much of an effect it had on the final outcome. The voice acting was movie quality too. I don't finish too many games but this was one that engaged me the whole time and I never got tired of. I felt motivated to finish every mission and find every collectable item. If there's going to be a sequel, it'll be an insta-buy to me.
199  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Terminator: Genesis + a TV series? on: December 16, 2014, 11:43:12 PM
It's not about being cynical. It's about the media saturation everyone has access to from every online source imaginable. In today's world, long before any movie is out, you can find out just about anything and everything about it before setting foot into the theater. I 100% guarantee that the plot of the new Star Wars movie will be leaked/stolen/posted months before anyone will see it. It's this kind of ease of access in media that makes it just about impossible for a movie to come out of nowhere and really surprise people in a magical way that Blackjack was referring to. IMO, people are even conditioned to find out everything they can about a movie before paying to see it. I really doubt a lot of people want to purposely avoid reading/watching anything about a movie in order to just walk in thinking "I wonder what this is about".

I'm not being critical of this attitude, just saying it's a product of today's social media and online saturated world we live in, and it's changed the movie watching attitudes of everyone. Nothing cynical about that.
