I read Hunt for Red October and Red Storm Rising years ago, which I consider two of the best books I've read. The pacing in those two were so well done you couldn't put them down.

Wow, really odd that some of you are seeing such a performance hit on the iPad 3. I just don't see it, or maybe I'm not looking hard enough. icon_razz

One thing I would recommend is after the update, power the device off and then on to reset it. Let the battery run all the way down until the device shuts down on it's own, then charge it up fully. From what I've been reading, that will help with performance and battery life.

It's a bit bizarre that the experiences of people are so all over the map.

What the performance like on your iPad3?

I've been holding off on updating mine after reading about a pretty big performance hit.

I did upgrade my iPhone4 and although it's slower than my work-provided 5 it's still usable.

Performance feels pretty much the same as before the update. I have not noticed anything out of the ordinary.

I went ahead and updated my iPhone 5 and iPad 3 over the weekend. I was dreading the worst, but it seems to have gone off without any problems. I updated them through connection to a PC and downloading via iTunes. The battery performance on the iPhone is actually the same as before so luckily I avoided the weird battery issues many other people have reported. On the iPad the battery seems to drain a little faster than before but still acceptable in my mind.

I like the new look but a couple of things are annoying:

1. The folder view has been reduced to a 3x3 grid, resulting in a lot of wasted screen space and the need for extra swipes in folder that have more than 9 apps.
2. The default OS font is harder to read, even with the bold text enabled. For old fogies like me with not so great eyesight, it's a pain in the ass.

The parallax home screen and dynamic backgrounds are an interesting curiosity but disabled after the initial wow factor.

Really like it so far. Some of it is quite ugly, like the Safari icon, but lot's of nice little touches. Finally an Android like control panel!

Battery is getting slaughtered on my iPhone 5 of course.

Turning off Background App Refresh and enabling "Reduce Motion" to kill the annoying and gimmicky parallax effect is believed to improve battery life. If you could, try that and report back if it makes any difference. I'm holding off on the update until there is more info on the battery problem. Plus I'm sure the update servers are getting slammed now anyways.

172  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NFL 2013 -- Week 1 on: September 09, 2013, 07:06:53 PM
Gellar says:

1) I didn't see it live, but post game I saw the replay. The hit was incredibly dirty, but it's not suspendible. If Matthews were some jobber maybe, but the league is not going to suspend Clay Matthews on a personal foul that didn't injure someone. Staley's penalty was laughable, and the league stated as such post-game.

Yep, that hit was pretty ordinary by dirty hits standards in the NFL. The only concern I had was Staley or someone else doing some thing stupid in retaliation and getting kicked out of the game and possibly suspended. Thank god that didn't happen.

2) Jim Harbaugh would drive me insane if he was not the coach of my favorite team. How other 49er fans can't agree that he is a complete and total asshat is beyond me. But he's OUR asshat. Let's embrace it.

Totally agree. As a Niner fan, I find him hilarious at best and an obnoxious douchebag at worst, but the guy is an awesome head coach. He's our Bill Belichick, and as long as the team keeps winning, the personality is not an issue.

3) Yes, most 49er fans know nothing about football. But that's true of all football fans. Collectively, it's the biggest group of passionate, non-sensical fans in all of sports. Maybe basketball rivals them in cluelessness, but not passion.

The post game call in shows are totally unlistenable to me just based on the sheer idiocy half drunk people spew on the way home from the game.

Hard fought game in SF. Clay Matthews is a great LB, but he's Harbaugh's an ass. That's all I gotta say about that.

At least Harbaugh doesn't intentionally try to injure the QB of the other team with a dirty, laaaaaaaaaaaaaaate hit.  If Rodgers got hit as late as Kaepernick did, the league office would have exploded.

Please tell me you don't honestly think that is true. It's a late hit, which Matthews even owned up to after the game, but intentionally trying to injure? Come on now.
174  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NFL 2013 -- Week 1 on: September 09, 2013, 03:42:07 AM
Kaepernick is the whole package. The one thing that he does which is underrated now is his ability to throw on the run. The few times he rolled out, by design or not, the passes he made were incredible. Right on target with velocity. Boldin must think he's gone to football heaven.

No way the Niners win that game with Alex Smith.

And on an unrelated note, LOL at the Buccaneers giving the game away to the Jets and saving Ryan's neck.

I have not run into any impossible situations yet. The frustration comes from the pattern memorization through constant failure. It's required a level of gaming patience from me that I have not had to dig into in a long time. It's kind of old school.

Every time I get so frustrated I am about to break the controller, I have to stop playing and go do something non-gaming related (like laundry LOL). I come back to it later and am able to get past the frustrating part. It's all very zen in a bizarre way.  icon_smile

I picked this up on PSN as it is discounted for PS+ subscribers. Really good Metroid-vania type game with slick colorful graphics, but holy cow, some of the moves you need to pull off are nearly worthy of throwing the controller across the room in frustration. The speed and precision with which moves have to be executed are almost too much for my advanced aged skills.

182  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Movie] Elysium on: August 19, 2013, 02:20:51 AM
Saw it tonight. I don't think I've seen a more frustrating movie in recent years. On one hand, Blokamp's visual style and ability to create worlds is nearly unmatched in movies today. Future LA and Elysium look completely believable and visually incredible and WETA Workshop did some truly Oscar worthy FX work.

On the other hand, elements of the plot were really poorly thought out and the characters made no emotional impact. Jodie Foster was totally underused, with a character so boring and undeveloped that she might as well have not been in the movie. Plus, she had the weirdest speaking accent that I could not figure out. I still don't understand Kruger's motivation for turning at the end. Yeah, he' a bit mentally unhinged. That was established very early on, but I just didn't buy his actions near the end.

However, the biggest thing that drove me completely nuts was the constant use of shaky cam editing. That style has been the bane of action movies ever since directors started using it in the 90's. It's my opinion that directors who can't frame shots properly and edit competently resort to the shaky cam to disguise their deficiencies. Not only does the close in, constant movement of the camera give you a headache, it kills whatever sense of scale and movement is going on in the action.

In the end, I guess I liked it mainly for how visually interesting it was but it could have been so much more. Just another case of a pretty, but soulless movie.

I have been stuck in the 190s for 6 weeks. Talk about a plateau. Next week I should break through to the 180s, but man the last few weeks have just been a war to see any weight loss.

I even did a 6 day stretch of exercising last week  (6mi run, 17mi bike, 6 mi run, 21mi bike, 3mi run, 28 mi bike) to try to jumpstart and not much return so far.

Not feeling hopeless or demoralized, just frustrated.

Without knowing the details of your training program, the only thing I can offer is that once you hit that wall where the weight stops coming off, you need to modify your diet to start seeing results again. I'm not saying you have to stop eating or take up some crazy diet program. Just need to take a hard, critical look at what you eat and how much you eat. Maybe you need to adjust the amount of refined carbs or increase you intake of protein. Stuff like that.
187  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The 201X Health Improvement Thread on: July 18, 2013, 10:11:46 PM
Crossfit isn't necessarily about practical strength. It's more about a combination of a wide variety of movements. The idea is that you do not specialize in any particular movement or exercise, rather you become generally proficient at everything from Olympic weightlifting to body weight gymnastics to running/cardio work. If your goal is good general overall fitness, Crossfit is a great way to do it. The other thing about Crossfit is that instead of long extended workouts, you do shorter more intense ones. They can be as short as 5 minutes or as long as 30-45 minutes. A typical CF class would last an hour with warmup in the beginning, then some instruction about specific movements (weightlifting most commonly) followed by the workout, then finish with a cooldown (stretching mainly). There is a lot of stuff online about the theory of CF, so I won't rehash it here, but I've been doing it for about 5 years and I've dropped 25-30 pounds, increased muscle mass and endurance overall. I'm 45 years old and I've tried just about everything with no success. It was not until I locked on to CF that I finally got results.

I'm not one of those fanatical CF weirdos that go around preaching about it, but I will tell people about it if they are really interested. As with any exercise plan/routine, there are good and bad things about CF, and if you are not careful you can get hurt doing it, but the risk isn't any greater than any other physical activity. Just have to know your limits and pay attention to technique.

It's taken me the better part of 4 years in my crossfit experience, but I FINALLY was able to squat snatch over 100 lbs today. A far cry from some of the ungodly crossfit athletes who can snatch close to and above 200 lbs, but it's the toughest, most technique driven Olympic lift possible, IMO.

Anyhow, it's the little things in life that get you excited sometimes.  Tongue

It's so obvious he was given the choice of leaving gracefully on his own terms or outright fired by MS. No exec with a brain would leave a high profile situation like his at MS to go to a dying company that everyone despises.

Agree...sort of.

I thought the remake was just okay. While it was visually interesting, which is usually the case with most of Tim Burton's movies, there wasn't much heart, soul, or whatever you call it, especially in comparison with the original. Johnny Depp's version of Willy Wonka was just a creepy weirdo. I wasn't as overtly offended as Gene Wilder, but I think that it was kind of a needless remake, much like a lot of movie reboot/remakes nowadays.

I've asked around and from what it seems, Microsoft is not trying to sell the console to US, the gamers, because we're going to buy it anyway.  They're trying to sell it to the nongamer who wants a fancy box in their living room so Microsoft can "own the living room."  This sort of makes sense since they used to own the office and don't own that anymore, so they've gotta try dominating at something.

The problem for them is that they forgot they have a real strong competitor in Sony and that the assumption that we're 'going to buy it anyway' was probably a shitty one.

That's interesting because back in 2001 or 2002 when the first Xbox was in development, I was a Microsoft employee in the old WebTV group in the SF Bay Area. I remember going to an internal group meeting/presentation where Xbox was unveiled (there wasn't even a prototype ready yet)  and even back then, over 10 years ago, it was made pretty clear during the presentation that the Xbox would be the first step in a long range goal of putting an entertainment hub in everyone's living room. Xbone sounds like the final iteration of that goal.
