Anyone know what the differences are between the Xbox and Xbox360 versions? I get this sneaking suspicion that they are exactly the same except the 360 version looks slightly prettier.

1247  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 - Massive Shortages at Launch on: November 11, 2005, 07:13:41 PM
According to the content details on EBGames.com, the cable that ships in the box is a combo component and composite AV cable, so if you don't have an HDTV, you will not have to buy an extra video cable.

1253  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox360 Preorders Open Again on EBGames on: October 28, 2005, 05:04:52 PM
Yes, it looks pretty straighforward to cancel an order. Just look at the order details page online and click on the "cancel" button.

A new twist has appeared when I checked my order this morning. Each item in the bundle has been broken out separately in the overall order. All the items now have varying expected ship dates, so I don't know if EB will hold everything and ship it all in one big box or in separate boxes as items become available. I gave EB a call and they really couldn't tell me anything. My order will most likely ship in early January according to their estimates, but they are hoping that Microsoft is shipping more units than what they are saying initially. What will most likely happen is that they will ship me the games and various accessories first in Nov./Dec. and then the console itself in January. But like I said, they are not really sure what the situation will be come the launch day.

So, if you HAVE to have one on launch day, you're probably better off waiting in line at Best Buy or Walmart. If you can wait up to a month or month and a half, then place an order with EB.

For me, I'm going to think it over in the next couple of days. I'd like to have one on launch day, but the thought of waiting in line for hours with a mass of people doesn't really appeal to me.
1254  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox360 Preorders Open Again on EBGames on: October 28, 2005, 06:39:34 AM

Are you able to cancel your order if you want to before you actually get it?

It appears that you can cancel the order. I figure I'll try waiting in line at Best Buy for the midnight release.  If I get one there, I'll cancel the EB order.
1255  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox360 Preorders Open Again on EBGames on: October 28, 2005, 05:18:24 AM
For those who didn't pre-order an Xbox and regretted it later, you have a second chance. I just happened to visit EBGames.com and noticed that they are taking preorders for an "ultimate" bundle and a "core" bundle (click 'Xbox360' on the top nav bar). Prices are $700 for the ultimate and $600 for the core. Unlike some of the more ridiculous bundles at Gamestop, these bundles seem more reasonable, with games that I actually want.

There's a warning that orders placed after Oct. 26 may not ship until 2006, but the estimated ship date when I placed the order was Dec. 1.

It's worth considering if you really, really want one now...

I guess this is kinda off-topic, but what do you all do when daylight savings comes around? It's coming up in another week and a half, and my kid, who usually goes to bed at 8:00 pm to 8:30 pm pre-daylight savings, will now be getting ready for bed at 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm once DST kicks in.

1263  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [parenting] MY SON WILL NOT GO TO SLEEP on: October 19, 2005, 05:01:44 PM
Like I said, different things work for different people. Do what you are comfortable with.

The reason why it is not recommended that kids sleep in the parents' bed is that the kid can get TOO attached to it and have a difficult time transitioning to their own bed later on. Also, for very young infants, there is a risk of mom or dad tossing and turning in bed and accidentally rolling over the kid. For the folks who have had success with sharing their bed with the kids, that's great. There is no be-all end all right or wrong answers. Just suggestions to try. What pediatricians recommend are just guidelines for parents who need a little direction.

1265  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [parenting] MY SON WILL NOT GO TO SLEEP on: October 19, 2005, 06:46:27 AM
What are your son's nap pattern during the day? Also, when does he eat dinner? At what age did he transition from sleeping in a bassinet in your room  to his crib in his room? Answers to these questions might shed some light on why he can't sleep through the night.

One thing that might help is if he is conditioned to sleep with a "lovey", usually a favorite blanket or stuff toy. Something that can soothe him when he is trying to sleep.

Letting him cry it out may be the last resort. Your wife has to realize that if someone constantly goes running to him when he wakes up in the middle of the night, he will LEARN that he can control the situation. That is a bad situation. You may have to tough it out for several days and let him cry himself to sleep, but once he is conditioned over several days, he SHOULD be able to sleep through the night.

th'FOOL's situation is more the exception than the rule. It's great that it ended up working but pediatricians generally recommend against letting infants getting used to sleeping with the parents. Who knows, maybe letting junior sleep with mom and dad in their bed may work. While there are general recommendations, it always comes down to what works best for you.

I cannot believe an attorney actually wrote that letter. Any real attorney would read that and fall to the floor laughing his/her ass off. The guy is just a two bit, wannabe, hack "lawyer".

The Seattle police should arrest Thompson for wasting the paper in their fax machine.

1268  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The NHL is officially back TONIGHT! on: October 17, 2005, 04:28:27 AM
I was at the Sharks/Blackhawks game (season tickets, yeah!). Two things: the Hawks were coming in on the 2nd game of a back to back, so they were no doubt tired by the 3rd period, and they could not keep up with the Sharks team speed. The Hawks goalie, Anderson, also played a whale of a game. The Sharks would have scored several more goals if it were not for him.

1270  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The NHL is officially back TONIGHT! on: October 13, 2005, 09:52:22 PM
I was at the Sharks game last night. Columbus was turned into roadkill by the Sharks speed and Kyle MacLaren's cement butt. The Jackets had a real hard time keeping up and Marc Denis got NO help from his team on defense when the Sharks scored two goals that came off of fourth or fifth rebounds.

Even though I hate the delay of game penalty for firing the puck over the glass, Im liking the speed and offense of the new league.

1272  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The NHL is officially back TONIGHT! on: October 12, 2005, 12:07:32 AM
Most of the changes are good except for two:

1. I HATE the fact that the goalies cannot touch the puck in the corners. It's an idiotic rule to penalized goalies who are good at handling the puck. Why not let them play the corners and trigger breakouts?

2. The rule about shooting the puck over the glass makes no sense. You get a two minute penalty for firing the puck into the stands if it does not touch the boards/glass first. If the puck hits the boards/glass and then goes into the stands, it is not a penalty. That is a pointless rule.

I'll be going to the Sharks home opener wednesday night. Hopefully they will play better than they have in the first three games on the road. It's been like watching a live version of EA NHL hockey set to rookie skill level.
1273  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / First game you ever played on the PC? on: October 11, 2005, 09:14:43 PM
Speaking of elementary school, does anyone remember Wilderness Campaign and Odyssey on the Apple II? Those two games were awesome. They were sort of like a very primitive strategy RPG where you had to raise a small army, rampage through the countryside, and kill the UBG (ultimate bad guy).
1274  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Conquest of Origin Systems on: October 11, 2005, 09:11:57 PM
What an incredibly SAD story. Origin was one of the best game companies in its heyday. Just about every old-time PC gamer holds the Ultima series (up to U7 at least) near and dear to their hearts. Wing Commander too.

Of course, this is yet another example of how EA is the anti-christ in the game industry. The sad thing is that the politics and bureaucracy there is not unique just to EA. It's that way in a lot of huge mega-corporations. As an ex-employee of Microsoft, I can attest to that.
1275  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / First game you ever played on the PC? on: October 10, 2005, 09:59:44 PM
Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves on an Atari 800. An obscure turn-based RPG-type of game that allowed four player cooperative gameplay. My best friend and I would stay up all night playing that.

Even though it was not the first PC  game I ever played, I still hold Jumpman very dear to my heart. I can still hear the Jumpman theme in my head. I recently downloaded an Atari computer emulator and the Jumpman game image, and much to my surprise, I STILL remember the patterns I used on some of the levels.

I want to see some reviews of SSX and LA Rush before I'll consider getting those.
