I have this:

It might be overkill for most people. I'm not some sort of networking power user that configs the heck out of routers, but the wireless range that thing puts out is ridiculous. The price has gone down though. I bought it for $199 when it was a new model release. In the time I've had it, I've never had any problems with it and it performs like a champ.

I used to hit gone gold every day, it was probably my first stop in the morning. I had even agreed to do some game reviews for the site, (I was the games editor at another site, and writing for a few others) but then everything just went south. Anyway, GT's a great place to hang. Here's to another 10 years - <virtual quaff>.

Yeah, Gone Gold was my go-to gaming stop too. Really sad when it died. I liked Rich and corresponded with him occasionally. Nice guy. Then he literally disappeared, the site withered into oblivion, and the rest is Gaming Trend history.

124  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Problems with Amazon Prime on: January 08, 2014, 06:02:41 PM
I order a ton of stuff from Amazon and the vast majority of stuff arrives on time as expected. Amazon uses a bewildering array of delivery options though, so if there are problems, take a look at your order history to see if there are specific delivery options that are failing to deliver on time. Also, keep in mind that during the holiday season, UPS and I believe the US postal service, had issues keeping up with the volume of package deliveries. In my experience Amazon uses these options:

1. UPS - seems to be the most common. For me, has been pretty much 100% reliable.
2. Smartpost (FedEx and UPS) - this is where FedEx or UPS will deliver to the nearest US Post Office to you and the USPS makes the local delivery. If anything goes wrong, it is usually because the USPS delays/loses the package.
3. Local regional delivery vendor - In the SF Bay Area where I live, the local vendor is Ontrac. It's like a courier service. I occasionally get packages late from these guys. It's possible consistent delivery issues may be due to these local delivery companies. Reliability will vary from region to region depending on the local delivery company.
4. US Postal Service - occasionally, I'll get orders delivered end to end by the USPS. Usually small items like video games or movies. Very occasionally will get delayed a day or two.
5. DHL - Every once in a blue moon, Amazon ships something to me via DHL. I have no idea why but it happens maybe once or twice a year. Usually reliable, but it's a small sample size.

Overall, Amazon Prime has been excellent in my experience, but I live in a major city with lots of nearby delivery stations and hubs so I'm sure it's not quite as reliable as living out in more sparsely populated areas where there are not as much infrastructure.

The whole metaphysical nonsense didn't bother me much. I was much more interested in the cloning stuff they integrated into the story. So far I have been really really impressed with the series. The blending of current tech and extrapolation into future/sci-fi tech is incredibly well done. None of it seems contrived to me at all, which makes the world they've created feel totally plausible yet retain the whole exotic future that makes the show feel unique.

I agree though that the ineptitude of the MX androids in comparison with Dorian is really jarring. They've only made vague references to the fact that the DRN models are "crazy" so hopefully they will expand on that angle in future episodes.

I've always liked Karl Urban but he is really awesome in this series.

The show has set a high bar right out of the gates and hopefully they will continue those standards. Anyhow, it's fast becoming one of my favorite shows on TV right now.

Oh boy. Since it's a Lars Von Trier movie, it's going to be visually stunning, if disturbing at times, with crushingly depressing themes and all sorts of uncomfortable scenes.

In other words, not the feel good comedy of the year stuff. icon_razz

Spoiler for Hiden:
also, not 100% sure the governor is dead. They did not show the actual headshot. She might have flinched at the end.

Spoiler for Hiden:
After being run clean through with a sword and left in a field of zombies, I think the only question is whether the Gov is going to be eaten or zombified, or if he was spared both of those fates. While it's true that we didn't see the coup de grace, I'll be very surprised if he comes back after that.

Speaking of not seeing the body, though, are we sure that Little Asskicker is dead? We saw a bloody carseat, but no actual baby bits (unless I missed that). It's possible that Weird Girl or some other child got the baby onto the bus.

Spoiler for Hiden:
In the Talking Dead after show, the governor was included in the "in memorium" segment which confirms he is dead.

Personally, I just want my console to play games. All this other extra media hub business is just pointless distraction, and if the functionality isn't spot on, then what's the point?

Aside from the price point, the main reason I went PS4 instead of XBO is that I felt more interested in Sony's emphasis on the games rather than all the other extra stuff. Sure it may be PS3 2.0 but that's fine with me.

I guess I'm old skool that way. tear

That link Jimmy gave doesn't seem to be the update to me.  It seems to be the full install if you are installing a new drive and need to get the OS installed.  Maybe it will work like the update, but you are downloading more than you need to.

Egads I think you're right!

This procedure is for initializing your PS4 system and performing a new installation of the system software, such as for when you replace the hard disk drive.

Thanks guys. Good to know that we are all still in a waiting pattern.

In the mean time, in anticipation of the onslaught of new PS4 units hitting Sony's update servers, I'm not taking any chances with slow download access of the day one patch, which is nearly 1 GB in size. I recommend downloading it and copying it to a USB drive now so that you don't have to wait during setup. Instructions here:

That's crazy talk! Honestly, I'll have to think hard about trying another half marathon again. I'm glad I did it the last two years but it's definitely at the upper end of my pain tolerance.

If I do another one, no more Gatorade for me. That stuff is so overrated.
148  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The 201X Health Improvement Thread on: October 08, 2013, 12:10:54 AM
There were water and Gatorade stations all along the route, but I didn't start taking any until around the 4 mile mark. Then I hydrated at every station until the end, although I skipped the last one since it was so close to the finish. I also took one of those Gu energy packs at the midway point.

I guess Gatorade is suppose to hydrate you but I still felt thirsty after drinking that stuff. I think I should have stuck to plain old water. If I ever decide to run another half marathon, I might buy one of those belts with the small water bottles and hydrate on my own schedule rather than relying on the stations along the race route.

Amazingly enough today, the day after, I don't feel bad at all. The hamstrings are a little sore but that's it. The hurt in the feet is gone and the knees feel okay.

Some of you may remember that I do Crossfit regularly and I really believe that has helped with my overall strength, endurance, and ability to recover. I did not specifically train as much for the half marathon this year. The longest distance I ran in preparation was 6 miles and I only did that twice. Otherwise I ran 3 miles multiple time over the 4 weeks leading up to the race. However, I stuck to my Crossfitting routine of 3 to 4 times a week, with a good mix of metabolic stuff and weightlifting. From what people have been telling me, a near 10 minute improvement in my half marathon time is pretty major, so I am happy about that.

Now I have to decide whether or not I want to run it again next year. I am not that much of a fan of distance running. The only reason I did the half two years in a row is due to peer pressure from my friends.

Oh, and the winner of the San Jose Rock and Roll Half Marathon this year finished in 1:02. That's better than my 10K time! Gah!
149  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The 201X Health Improvement Thread on: October 06, 2013, 08:22:03 PM
Finished the half marathon in about 2:20 which is almost 10 minutes better than last year. I was in good shape until about mile 11 when I really started to feel it physically. The last mile was done solely on guts, duct tape and string. I SO wanted to walk across the finish line but fought that urge mentally and managed to run the entire race (no walking).

My legs are sore in a way that cannot be described. Hopefully some Aleve and rest in the next 24 hours will enable me to walk again.

I have no idea how people can do a full marathon. The thought of running for four hours is incomprehensible to me.
150  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The 201X Health Improvement Thread on: October 04, 2013, 11:45:13 PM
I have a half marathon this Sunday. For the last month, I've been running 3 mile, then 6 mile loops one to two times a week. I ran 6.35 miles this past Wednesday in 1:08 and felt pretty good at the end. Certainly could have kept going, so I don't feel as nervous about going past the 6 mile barrier. I ran the same half marathon a year ago and did that in 2:28, so I guess I am shooting for around the same time.

Sorry to derail the conversation. Carry on...

Wow, really odd that some of you are seeing such a performance hit on the iPad 3. I just don't see it, or maybe I'm not looking hard enough. icon_razz

One thing I would recommend is after the update, power the device off and then on to reset it. Let the battery run all the way down until the device shuts down on it's own, then charge it up fully. From what I've been reading, that will help with performance and battery life.

It's a bit bizarre that the experiences of people are so all over the map.

I went ahead and updated my iPhone 5 and iPad 3 over the weekend. I was dreading the worst, but it seems to have gone off without any problems. I updated them through connection to a PC and downloading via iTunes. The battery performance on the iPhone is actually the same as before so luckily I avoided the weird battery issues many other people have reported. On the iPad the battery seems to drain a little faster than before but still acceptable in my mind.

I like the new look but a couple of things are annoying:

1. The folder view has been reduced to a 3x3 grid, resulting in a lot of wasted screen space and the need for extra swipes in folder that have more than 9 apps.
2. The default OS font is harder to read, even with the bold text enabled. For old fogies like me with not so great eyesight, it's a pain in the ass.

The parallax home screen and dynamic backgrounds are an interesting curiosity but disabled after the initial wow factor.

Really like it so far. Some of it is quite ugly, like the Safari icon, but lot's of nice little touches. Finally an Android like control panel!

Battery is getting slaughtered on my iPhone 5 of course.

Turning off Background App Refresh and enabling "Reduce Motion" to kill the annoying and gimmicky parallax effect is believed to improve battery life. If you could, try that and report back if it makes any difference. I'm holding off on the update until there is more info on the battery problem. Plus I'm sure the update servers are getting slammed now anyways.
