Great trailer. I'm a big fan of trailers that leave some mystery to the movie going in.

They've been very deliberate about it. I heard something about how the previous teasers hadn't shown anything that isn't in the first 1/3 of the film, and it doesn't look to me like the full trailer goes any further in. Just the way a good trailer should be for a franchise as familiar as this. We have the basic outline of a plot, but not enough to actually spoil it.

I for one appreciate the trailer still leaving a LOT unanswered. The trend of trailers nowadays pretty much giving away the whole story, or huge spoilers (Terminator Genisys anyone?) is ridiculous.

BTW, the new SW trailer is GLORIOUS.
123  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] The Walking Dead Season 6 (Careful for Spoilers) on: October 12, 2015, 09:11:24 PM
They could have saved themselves a lot of effort by simply throwing a whole bunch of molotov cocktails in the quarry, but I guess it's less dramatic that way.

Also, where did they get all those cars to line up along the sides of the road??

I wasn't a fan of the constant jumping back and forth between the black and white flashbacks and the colorized action. It was too distracting to the flow of the story.
124  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Fear the Walking Dead on: October 06, 2015, 03:09:21 AM
The original Walking Dead season 1 was awesome despite a small handful of episodes.

The Fear finale, well the pacing for most of the episode was well done. The big problem I had was with the appearance of the massive herd, which I guess was the crowd locked up in the arena? It wasn't clearly defined which is just flat out lazy storytelling. Wherever the horde came from, it was pretty laughable that Salazar just strolled right up to the military compound so casually with the zombie herd literally right behind him. That was truly a WTF moment. Then the lady doctor mercy killing everyone and then sitting there in a mentally checked out state was such a cliche moment.

The character who died at the end because she was bitten, well that bite looked so unconvincing. It looked like a deep scratch and completely unbelievable. I get that they wanted to make it a surprise moment at the end for drama, but hiding it by making the "bite" a mere flesh wound was lame.

A truly frustrating season to watch. There were elements that were compelling or interesting, but holy cow there were so many missed opportunities and unlikeable characters. I'll still give it a go with season 2 because they've set up some interesting stuff like the boat, zombie apocalypse coast side, the mysterious rich black guy, and the remnants of the army are still running around.

Now we have Walking Dead to look forward to next Sunday.

The hidden immunity idol became a part of the show starting season 11 in 2005 (Survivor: Guatemala). Those players from the first 10 seasons better get their game going fast.

I can't wait to see what other crazy stuff Psycho Abby stirs up. You get the feeling that she is a ticking bomb ready to blow up. She talks about being more patient and becoming "a better person", but trying to learn life lessons on the fly in that environment is going to be hard.
127  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Survivor 2015: Second Chance! on: September 25, 2015, 12:00:33 AM
I'm excited about this season too. Having all these returning players means it's hardcore strategizing from the moment they hit the beach so hopefully we don't have to endure the stupid stuff when novices have no idea what they hell they are doing.

I won't mention who got eliminated first in case there are people who have yet to see the first episode, but the person booted out first was a bit of a surprise. There are a couple of people already on shaky ground, like Abby the crazy psycho Brazilian woman ("WHERE'S MY BRACELET!!!") and Stephen the physically hopeless nerd. Since these people all more or less know how to play the game, I expect big blindsides of some of the physically strong people long before the merge happens. It'll be awesome.
128  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Fear the Walking Dead on: September 22, 2015, 05:32:22 PM
Yeah, I guess I can see that comparison with the Alexandria group, but it's a weak premise to me. Taking a step back, it's kind of ridiculous for us to second guess how people would behave during a zombie apocalypse. It's not like any of us has any experience with that.  icon_razz paranoid

I think for me, I'd be willing to accept the whole notion of pretending life is normal if the characters were more appealing and easier to sympathize with. For whatever reason, I just have not had an easy time getting behind all these people.

I wonder how the show would have been perceived if the original series had never happened. The bar has been set so high and Rick and the gang are so ingrained in viewers' minds it's hard not to compare the two series even if it's not a fair comparison.

Its really hard to do anything if your offensive and defensive lines are terrible. QUEST FOR SIX WINS.

The good news was that it gave me an excuse to stop watching at halftime and start playing Destiny. At least in that game, my offense was SWEET.
130  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Fear the Walking Dead on: September 21, 2015, 06:01:57 PM
I'm trying to think back to when I watched season 1 of Walking Dead for the first time and I don't recall any of the characters being so annoying or plain stupid. Maybe Dale or Carol, but most importantly, Rick and Shane were well written believable characters from the very beginning and as the focal point of those early episodes, the show was way more compelling than this new series. Honestly, I find ALL the characters on Fear the Walking Dead to be annoying, stupid and not very believable. The episode last night, they were making it so hard to stay with the series. Without spoiling anything, the mom did something so unbelievably stupid and irrational I was shaking my head. The drug addicted son is such an unlikable character you WANT him to get bitten. The emo daughter is useless. The dad is a weakling, and maybe it's me, but jogging in the middle of the zombie outbreak?? Is he in training to run away from them? And 9 days after the outbreak, the army sure did erect that fence in a hurry. Donald Trump should hire those guys for the border fence he wants to build.

I love the original WD show, even with all its faults, but holy crap, this new series is so hard to watch. There's a lot of potential material telling the story of the outbreak origins, but building the story around such a collection of unlikable characters is derailing all the potential. I'll keep grinding through it since there are only two more episodes, but the writing HAS to get better for the inevitable season 2.

I have to say, I suck at these type of games, online shooters, so I've been focused on the basic story mode by myself. After a number of missions, I hit a mandatory co-op multiplayer mission which matched me up with two random people. I don't use a headset during gaming so there was no coordinated effort when we hit the level boss, but I really enjoyed the level. The other two players were a lot higher level than me but just the simple notion of ganging up on the boss and resurrecting each other when someone died was more fun than I had expected.

I remember when I saw Aliens in the theater for the first time. Ebert's reaction is totally not what I felt. I walked out thinking "phew, that was intense, but AWESOME!".

I had the same reaction walking out after Mad Max Fury Road.

From a technical standpoint, both movies were about as good as it gets.

This final season is being broken up into two seasons, like AMC did with Breaking Bad. 7 episodes now and 7 next year. Kinda lame.

I've watched the show from the beginning and it is fantastic. What I like is that the portrayal of the era, sets, costumes, props, are authentic. The best thing about this season is that finally they show the contribution of the Chinese in the construction of the railroad. It's something that is rarely shown in westerns.

At the least, Cullen Bohannan is a total bad ass.

I agree! icon_lol

Seriously though, I kind of think there is a correlation to the notion that the volume of major game releases has decreased over the last 20 years or so, both PC and console. The industry has consolidated so much that games are either derivative high profile AAA releases or indie/crowdfunded obscure releases. The result is that there simply isn't the volume of decent games to talk about or get excited about. As a group, we seem to be on the older side of the gaming demographic here so it takes a lot to get amped up about a lot of games. I know for me personally, I used to be a big PC gamer but the way gaming has evolved, I rarely game on PC and spend almost all my time on consoles but even then I play for shorter sessions than I used to. It's often because life in general intrudes, but frequently, by the time I have free time in the evenings to game, I'm just too tired. Getting old definitely has an effect on my gaming habits.

Anyone watching the streaming "Conversations with Creators" series on Playstation Network? I was curious about it and turns out it's really quite good. Wil Wheaton is the host so how much you like/hate him might taint your enjoyment of the series. He does get over the top fanboy-ish at times but he does ask some pretty insightful questions. Anyhow, the first episode was with Bungie, the second one was with Naughty Dog and the third one, out today, is with Treyarch (Call of Duty). Not sure how many episodes are in the series. The format is just Wheaton sitting with several people from each company, having a conversation about their games, the development process and other various topics.

Highly recommended for those who have PSN access.

To me it seemed like a wash in the Sony vs. Microsoft comparison. They each had their share of exclusives, but for me, the Sony exclusives seemed more compelling. I don't think either one "won" the battle of presentations. It all seemed sort of by the book and uneventful. No 'holy crap' moments for me. I was mildly surprised about the Xbox backward compatibility reveal, so I may end up getting an Xbox One this Christmas.

I wouldn't want to have to keep trying that Jeep sequence over and over even if it does look good.

Maybe it's due to the partially developed state of the game, but the worrisome thing is that there were NO visual cues telling you where to go.
