1081  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ninety-Nine Nights: Anyone take the plunge? on: August 18, 2006, 04:45:13 AM
I have it and I've spent a little time with it. Graphics are amazing at times, however there is one HUGE drawback. There is a strange blurring of the distant objects. So, everything in the foreground is nice and sharp, but everything in the background appears like being viewed through a dirty glass. It's strange and honestly, it was giving me a headache. On the plus side, the combos are cool and some of them look really impressive. On the negative side, the voice acting is abysmally bad, like as in porno acting bad. The voices don't match the lip movements either, so it looks like a badly dubbed kung fu movie.

I really enjoyed the demo but I have not played the full game enough to say whether or not I like it. I WANT to like it because I do enjoy Dynasty Warrior type of mindless hack and slash games. The bad voice acting doesn't bother me much because let's face it, how many Japanese made games have decent voice acting? The blurring effect is what I am concerned about most. If it is always so bad that it gives me a headache every time I play it, then it's going on my shelf to await trade-in.

I think what it comes down to is this. If you like games like Dynasty Warriors and have not gotten tired of the endless sequels, then chances are you'll like N3. If you don't like Dynasty Warriors, there is nothing about N3 that would change your mind.

I picked up Apocalypse Now, which was a double dip for me, but hey, what the heck, it was only $11.99.
Also got The Simpsons season 8.

Good for you! Getting a new job and getting far, far away from the scamming boss is the right thing to do.

The description of your old job makes sense now why he didn't have you fill out the W4. He's probably doing it to avoid all the worker's comp and insurance requirements. Since you were a driver for him, the potential for accidents and other road mayhem makes you a higher risk as an employee in his eyes. What a slimeball.

I must not be hardcore enough. The only spell name I can remember is Mahalito from Wizardry, I think.

DAMNIT!  I have been FOILED.  I thought he was the "Tom" from "Tom vs Bruce."  That's the only Tom I've read anyway.

Smart-ass comment backfire total.  Roll zero for massive damage to self.  Ritual suicide for regain honor.

...

No honor am having previous.  Am fail.

You know, that is the same Tom Chick in Tom vs. Bruce in CGW. Like I said, he's a freelance reviewer so his work is in several publications, but he is a regular reviewer for Computer Games Magazine.

So, you did make a saving throw after all. Bravo!

Ron, I'm sorry this turned into a Hatfield vs. McCoys battle of websites. I just thought it was amusing that in the middle of this long, detailed discussion of Dead Rising, a jab at GT came out of nowhere.

Whoa, I didn't know he was in TV.

Stiffler, actually, it's not the same magazine. Computer Games Magazine is the distant third of the "big 3" computer magazines after Computer Gaming World (soon to be Games for Windows), and PC Gamer. CGM is the one that Steve Bauman (who?) is the editor in chief of. Of the three, I like CGM the best. Their reviews and articles are better written than CGW and PC Gamer.
1089  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Tom Chick disses GT! on: August 17, 2006, 12:00:31 AM
He is a freelance game reviewer, most prominently featured in Computer Games Magazine. I actually kind of like Tom Chick's reviews. He is articulate and backs up his opinions on games. Sometimes though I get the feeling he goes against popular though just for the sake of saying "Look at me! I'm a rebel! I'm COOL!". Just from reading the boards on QT3, it's apparent to me that he is a legend in his own mind.
1090  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Tom Chick disses GT! on: August 16, 2006, 10:41:14 PM
So, I was over at the QT3 board reading a thread about Tom Chick's Dead Rising review he did for Yahoo (5 out of 5 stars), and on page two of the thread was this little gem, and I quote:

Quote
Good lord, I couldn't disagree more. No one's saying DR is perfect. And that's not what a rating is supposed to reflect. A rating is a matter of how good a game is, not how many points get docked for what decisions or whether it has Starforce* or how the scores for graphics, audio, and UI add up. If you're going to use ratings, don't mistake them for tallies or math or grades. They should be a measure of the writer's enthusiasm, or lack thereof. I couldn't be more enthusiastic about a game than I am Dead Rising, which is why it gets five stars.

Which is also another reasons that percentages are really really stupid.

-Tom

* I think I saw somwhere that some fifth-rate site is supposedly knocking ten percentage points off the rating for every game that uses Starforce.

Congratulations to Ron for running a "fifth-rate" site! Woo hoo!!  icon_lol

I haven't filled out a w4 (or whatever the tax form is) because he said it's "not necessary".

Your boss is full of crap. Not filling out a W4 is illegal. Getting your $10 back could be the least of your worries. What kind of job is this?

1095  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: So... My dad has cancer on: August 15, 2006, 08:22:10 PM
Oh man, I feel bad for you. It sounds like a really difficult situation. Honestly, I don't think your dad has much of a choice about retirement. Radiation treatment is not a pleasant experience and depending on how intensive it will be, he's not going to be anywhere close to a physical state strong enough to walk, let alone do hard labor.

Financially, I think you should look into state and federal disability options, which is something different from social security. Your mom could help, but considering the emotional journey she is going to be on, going back to work will be difficult. If you and your brother can help, do it. Family is too important not to. If anyone in the family has 401K money, it might be an option to withdrawl it early. Yes, there will be a tax penalty, but it can be another source of funds to pay the medical bills. Same with investments like stocks and mutual funds.

LE's suggestion about worker's comp is also worth a shot.

1098  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Battlestar Galactica - When is season 2 coming? on: August 14, 2006, 06:28:49 PM
Yep. BSG is THE best series on TV, imo. Even better than some pretty good shows like 24 and Prison Break. I remember in the year before the new BSG started, the hardcore fans of the old, original, 70's Galactica were so violently vocal in their total condemnation of the new series, particularly over the fact that Starbuck was going to be a woman. Funny how we don't hear from these old school hardcore fanatics anymore.

Well, Ron should at least have another job lined up before he does that. Kind of dumb to tell the boss to F-off and then end up unemployed because of it.

Despite the terrible review at Gamespot, I'm getting N3. I don't mind the repetitive nature of the game and it looks fantastic. I'll also pick up Darkstar One.

I am interested in Dirge of Cerebus: FFVII, Xyanide, Deep Labyrinth, Konductra, and Freedom Wings, but I'll wait for reviews or impressions first. It could be an expensive week for me. Hopefully most of these game will suck.  Tongue

Just like she ignored the parking ticket being written up on her snazzy expensive car:

I may be the only one on the planet, but I am looking forward to Eternal Champion. I had it on the Genesis when it first came out. It was a freaking hard fighting game, but it had a lot of depth to it and it was different from all the Street Fighter clones coming out in those days.
1113  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The marketplace Bomberman Act:Zero trailer makes me LOL on: August 11, 2006, 06:14:02 AM
This is like that pirate game from Akella that had the Disney Pirates of the Carribbean name tacked on at the last minute just to cash in on the movie name.

It's like another game was being developed and someone decided to tack on the Bomberman name just to cash in on the franchise.

I've been a member here since the day Gone Gold imploded and it's been nothing but great.

1118  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dead Rising impressions! on: August 10, 2006, 06:27:42 AM
Not much more can be said. The save system is very unusual and kind of lame. One other minor gripe I have is that there are an annoying number of "now loading" screens. It kills the flow of the game to have to wait for levels to load so frequently.

Unlike that 'other' Capcom zombie game franchise, the voice acting in Dead Rising is surprisingly good. I like the photo taking element which gives you something different to do. I found my first lawn mower and damn if that wasn't fun as hell to use.

Really great game.
