1082  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: A prayer to the Lord my God--PLEASE get rid of Sanjaya Malakar on: March 21, 2007, 05:19:29 PM
Amazingly enough, Sanjaya wasn't the most annoying thing about the show. The most annoying thing was that girl who kept crying through literally the ENTIRE show. Every time the camera switched over to a shot of her, which became more and more frequent through the show, I wanted to smack some sense into her.

Oh, and Sanjaya singing the Kinks song was a total train wreck.

Simon's comment was classic: "Well I think the crying girl just about says it all!" crybaby

Crap. That royally SUCKS. I hate the other two major PC mags and CGM was my favorite.

Depressing. Just depressing.
1084  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Titan Quest Expansion on: March 13, 2007, 07:55:59 PM
Anyone having a weird rubber-band slowdown/speed up lag effect? Before installing the expansion, TQ ran fine on my PC. Now I get the rubber-band lag constantly. It's not a gamestopping problem, but it's pretty annoying. Judging from the stuff I've been reading at various TQ messageboards, it's a pretty widespread issue.

On another note, I am playing the Epic level in Egypt and had an "aauugghh!!" moment. I'm in a very large cave somewhere clearing out undead and scorpions with ease. Then out of nowhere, a HUGE Manticore comes swooping in, hits me once, hits me twice, unleashes a cold blast--BOOM I'm dead. My character is a level 40 tank and the Manticore is level 61! Sweet mother of Cleopatra! How do you kill that thing?? I tried maybe another 5 or 6 times to kill it but it has massive hit points and TWO instant death attacks-- the cold blast and poison darts. I figure I need to upgrade my weapons an armor and go back later to take it out.

Oh man, that sounds fantastic. An open ended Titan Quest-like game? Sign me up!

Is there going to be a domestic release?

EDIT: Looks llike the game comes out in the U.S on March 27 according to EB Games:

I agree that this game might be a case of a very good game becoming overlooked. It doesn't help that the cover of the game box looks LAME.

I refuse to acknowledge that this abomination is attached in any way with the Wing Commander name. That's not Wing Commander. It's some bizarre bastardized remake of the old Bosconian arcade game.

Ugh, shame on you EA. I know Wing Commander and you sir, are no Wing Commander.

LOL, Judy Judy absolutely destroyed that girl on national TV. Priceless!

What gets me is that even if the auction was legit in some small way, why would anyone logically spend several hundred dollars on a photo? Okay, so technically the auction winner didn't read the fine print, but the intention of the seller was so freaking obvious. Just disgusting. People with those kind of intentions should be banned from eBay.

I would've thought it was a given that people'd know that Microsoft's not "holding out" on XBLA games to make people upset, but it turns out that's not the case. slywink

I had a fun time with the first Mercenaries, so I'm glad this one didn't turn out to be a platform exclusive.  Crackdown'll whet my appetite for more sandbox games for sure, so sign me up for this (and GTA IV etc etc etc).  Wikipedia says co-op is confirmed, so I'm double in!

They are not doing it to make people upset, they are doing it because the whole Live Arcade division are a little slow at best and incompetent at worst.

Two head guys over at Live Arcade have left the company the last month. Interesting, no?

That doesn't surprise me. I spent two years as a MS employee and it was amazing that anything ever got accomplished there despite all the bureaucratic BS that goes on. You can bet that two upper level guys leaving the Live Arcade group has a lot more behind it than just random chance.

These are the 10 games (in no particular order) from my past that I consider unforgettable moments/experiences in my game playing life:

1. Ultima III - One of the greatest CRPGs ever. I played it on my Atari 400 and one of the few CRPGs I played over and over again. One of the defining experiences during my high school years.

2. Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves - An obscure Atari 400/800 CRPG that was probably one of the first coop multiplayer games on any platform. It was turn-based and had an ungodly number of characters to choose from. My best friend and I spent many nights playing coop.

3. Civilization II - It's a classic with endless replayability. So addicting.

4. Chuck Yeager's Air Combat - I used to be a hardcore flight sim player but lost interest over time as the games got more and more complicated and time consuming. CYAC was brilliant because it was not complicated and the dogfighting experience was really well done. Plus, it had an impressive variety of planes to fly, missions to complete, and a nice flexible scenario generator.

5. Final Fantasy VII - At the time FF7 was an event as much as a gaming experience. Probably the first game I stood in line to buy. Maybe it doesn't hold up quite as well today, but when it first came out, it was all I played and I really got emotionally invested in the story and the characters.

6. Resident Evil - Even when it came out, it was obvious to me that it was a spiritual remake of Alone in the Dark, but it was memorable for it's suspense and jump out of your seat moments. The voice acting sucked. The controls were kind of lame, and the save system really blew, but despite the flaws, it scared the crap out of me. The first time the dog jumps through the window at you in the hallway was an unforgettable moment.

7. Jumpman - Another somewhat obscure Atari 400/800 computer game that I played endlessly. It was one of the first platform/jumping games ever and had the best mix of action, puzzles and music. The theme song still runs in my head today.

8. Full Throttle - One of the best adventure games ever made with a great story and excellent voice acting. Also had great songs in it from a band called the Gone Jackals. After finishing the game, I bought the Gone Jackals CD that had all the songs from the game. I still listen to it to this day.

9. EA NHL 94 - I believe it was the '94 edition that had the ability to knock little Wayne Gretzky to the ice and make his head bleed, as seen in the movie Swingers. My friends and I spent many a saturday night playing round robin games against each other. One of the best sports video games ever made.

10. Harpoon - An early real time strategy game of naval warfare. It was a complex game but the game engine made it a easy and a joy to play. I played it for years and never got tired of it.

Well, to play the devil's advocate for a second, you did list a "case" but left it to the buyer to ASSUME it was the paper sleeve and not a plastic case. In your defense, it was an honest oversight to not be more specific, but technically, it was sort of your bad to have left it to the buyer to make the assumption. I can see why the guy assumed he was getting a plastic case.

However, the buyer is truly being a dickwad for crying over a hunk of plastic.

I guess I'll reconfirm what I said last night. That's an in game, real-time shot of Duke standing in a random hallway. It was really done as a small teaser for a job ad on Nothing more.

I'm glad some of you enjoyed it, and we'll show more later as we start to wake from our slumber and decide how best to show the game off.

Slumber?? More like a flatlining coma.

Incredibly, they're deciding how to show the game off??

All I will say about Little Miss Sunshine is that it has one of the flat out most hilarious endings I've ever seen in a movie. What the little girl does on stage had me laughing so hard I was hyperventilating.

Great movie.
1106  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: And the 79th Oscar Nominations are... on: January 23, 2007, 10:10:17 PM
I saw Dreamgirls. The fact that it was not nominated for best picture is one of the great Oscar snubs in recent history. It was an incredibly fantastic movie. Every actor/actress in the ensemble cast was uniformly excellent. Everything about the movie was excellent. It's about as Oscar-friendly a movie as they come, yet no best picture nomination. What a colossal disappointment.

And if Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson win the supporting actor/actress awards, it'll only highlight the snub even more.

1109  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Netflix now will deliver movies to your PC on: January 18, 2007, 01:27:11 AM
kobra, unfortunately we (Tivo) don't have that kind of clout with the movie studios. Yes, the hardware could in theory handle movie downloads, but Tivo as a company is too much of a small fish to have any sort of major influence with the studios. Going it alone would be financially impossible right now, especially with how paranoid the major studios are over issues such as DRM, copy protection, piracy, etc.

I was at Fry's yesterday afternoon, and there was actually a line outside of around 50 people waiting for the midnight opening selling Burning Crusade. I was totally floored by this. It's not like there won't be enough copies around. You'd think a new console was being released.

1114  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: More Presidential Fun on: January 11, 2007, 07:44:34 AM
What exactly is the PLAN for these 20,000+ additional US troops? Sending more people there without any sort of clear strategy is completely useless. If Bush thinks sending more troops as an additional police presence is going to change the situation, he's even more out of touch with reality than we thought. I like how this move comes not too long after he removed the top two military commanders in Iraq, one of which was General John Abizaid who was NOT in favor of adding more troops. He wouldn't listen to his commanders in the theater of operations so he removed them instead. Smart.

Will any brand of SD card work? Nintendo says not all may work but did not specify which ones don't. All they say specifically is that anything larger than 2 GB will probably not work. Can anyone recommend a 1 GB or 2 GB card that does work?
