1081  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: TiVo Series 3 = $800.00 on: September 06, 2006, 06:07:23 PM

I was a Tivo user for five years and loved it, but what does this offer over the Comcast HD DVR (Motorola DCT-6412/2005) I currently have? (besides the superior Tivo interface, of course)

Uh, the superior Tivo interface. icon_biggrin

I'm not familiar with the HD DVRs that the cable companies give out so I can't truly give a decent comparison, but the Series 3 would essentially replace their box with dual asymetric tuners, Dolby digital 5.1 output, broadband content, and up to 35 hours of HD content storage.
1082  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: TiVo Series 3 = $800.00 on: September 06, 2006, 05:21:38 PM
Uhh, guys I hate to be the one to tell you, but the lifetime subscription option was discontinued quite some time ago. The subscription structure is now more like a cell phone provider where you can pay for service contracts of varying length (monthly, one, two or three years). The longer the contract the bigger the discount on the per month rate. I don't know what the plan is for the subscription structure for Series 3 at this point.

Without revealing too much that would get me in trouble, the Series 3 is an important milestone in Tivo's history. I was, and still am a part of the engineering group that designed and tested the Series 3 over the past year. It was a very complex project, and while we did draw on some of the past experience with the DirecTV HD Tivo box, a lot of the work was uncharted territory, like CableCard functionality for one.

I hope the average consumer understands what Series 3 is and is not. For folks who get one I think they will be very satisfied with it. Watching TV shows in glorious widescreen HD is awesome. Sports programming in HD is spectacular. Once you go HD, you never go back, I say. A lot of blood, sweat, and late nights went into the Series 3 and I know I am very proud to have been involved in my small way in this project.

Yes. Yes it does come with cables, including an HDMI cable (take that you cheap Sony bastards).

How would I know? I work for Tivo.  icon_biggrin

LE, my opinion is this. If you need people on an internet messageboard to convince you to buy it, then you shouldn't. Spending that much money on a console should be based on whether or not you are excited about the system and whether or not it has games you really want to  play.

1089  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: One-hit-Wonder Companies and their Games. on: August 31, 2006, 06:04:03 AM
This might be a stretch, but Larian Studios. They did Divine Divinity which was a minor hit, then did Beyond Divinity which was a colossal disappointment and bombed. They've done nothing else of note except for a couple of obscure games no one has ever heard of. They are working on a true sequel to Divine Divinity which could save them from one hit wonder status...or further cement them in that category.

Also, if you want to talk about companies dropping the ball, Troika Games was the poster child for that. They did three games in their short lifetime: Arcanum, Temple of Elemental Evil, and Vampire: The Masquerade-Bloodlines. All highly anticipated prior to their release, and all released in brutally buggy states eventually "fixed" much later after countless patches.

1092  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Keyboards - Saitek Eclipse II, Logitech G15, or what? on: August 29, 2006, 06:16:51 PM
The original Saitek Eclipse had the keys where the light would only light up around them, and not through them. Dumb design decision there. They did release an updated version where the light did shine through the keys so you could see the letters. I have that keyboard. It's nice but the keys are a little too mushy for my tastes. I like that the keys are relatively quiet. I'm interested in getting the Eclipse II, but I've only had the original Eclipse for less than a year. I can't justify getting a new keyboard so soon.

One annoying quirk about my Eclipse is that for some reason, on WindowsXP, the volume controls don't work at all. Apparently this is a known problem and Saitek has a workaround posted, which involves poking around in the registry. I tried it but it didn't work.

Sometimes though I get the feeling he goes against popular though just for the sake of saying "Look at me! I'm a rebel! I'm COOL!". Just from reading the boards on QT3, it's apparent to me that he is a legend in his own mind.

Ouch.  Not sure how to respond to that last part, other than to assure you I have just as much self-doubt and loathing as the next guy.  Legend in my own mind?  Hardly.  My mother tends to think pretty highly of me, though.

As for going against "popular thought", I rarely even keep up with "popular thought".  I don't read reviews before I've written my own, and as I so clumsily demonstrated by calling Gaming Trend 'fifth-rate', I don't even keep up with the gaming press.

So I can assure you that I'm just like the rest of you guys: if I like or don't like something, it's for no reason other than liking or not liking it.

Wow, do I ever feel like a tool now. Well, whether I agree or disagree with your reviews, at least they are well written and more compelling than what most other reviewers write. I will give you credit for that. I think maybe I am turned off by your persona on the QT3 boards more so than how you come across in your publication articles. I do find it interesting that occasionally, you will write a review of game that is completely opposite in opinion compared to what most other reviewers say. If anything, Tom, at least you are an interesting character in the large community of game reviewers.

Argh! Too many games, not enough time. Okay, I'll be playing 99 Nights, Dead Rising, Paraworld demo, and hopefully some Darkstar One.

And if I'm really bored, I'll fired up an oldie, Fool's Errand on DosBox, and try to finish that infernally sadistic puzzle game.
1098  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Casino Royale Script Review & Thoughts on: August 18, 2006, 05:33:59 PM
I'll give it a chance because I love the Bond movies, and it'll be something different. I still remain skeptical though. Daniel Craig just doesn't seem like a natural fit as Bond, especially after Brosnan, who did a great job.
1099  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ninety-Nine Nights: Anyone take the plunge? on: August 18, 2006, 05:09:56 PM
About the army AI of the demo compared to the full game, it feels like the AI in the full game is smarter. I have not had my units completely killed off in any missions yet and when I stand around watching them, they do seem to actively fight the enemies instead of standing around looking confused.

As for the voice acting, I guess I have higher expectations. I think it's horrible in the game. Then again, I prefer original Japanese audio with subtitles whenever I watch anime.

One tip I found helpful. It's beneficial to explore the maps and go to every dead end location possible. They usually have chests to break open for useful items.

Personally, I think the Gamespot review was a little too harsh. I like the game a lot and compared to Dynasty Warriors, it's a better game.

1101  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ninety-Nine Nights: Anyone take the plunge? on: August 18, 2006, 07:20:35 AM
Okay, I've spent another couple of hours with the game. So the blur effect doesn't bother me as much as it did in the beginning. It's still noticeable, but really your focus is on the killing of goblins right near you. Mission 2 is the same one as in the demo and it took me three tries to get through it. The game almost lost my interest at this point because there are no checkpoints in the game. If you die, you have to restart the entire level over again and of course I died a couple of times right at the end where you fight the troll boss. I was almost about to turn off the 360 and call it a night, but I tried one more time and succeeded. After I completed that level, the next level drew me right back in. It's nothing more than a massive massacre for your character. Here is where it was really fun because filling the power meter was done quickly due to the sheer number of enemies you can kill, which enabled the special moves and then the ultimate power up where it is insta-death for any enemies that come near you. The number of dead bodies on the ground was impressive. The level felt like one of the huge battles in the Lord of the Rings movies. Very, very cool.

Despite the faults (bad voice acting, no checkpoints, blurry horizon), I'm really enjoying the game so far. When you're killing literally a thousand orcs, the game looks quite good.

I wouldn't put it past Bush to have said that to the poor woman. It fits the pattern of bonehead things that have been coming out of his mouth over the years he's been the president. This is the same guy who defined 'sovereign state' as "a state that is...sovereign". There is a video floating around that has him saying this.
1105  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ninety-Nine Nights: Anyone take the plunge? on: August 18, 2006, 04:45:13 AM
I have it and I've spent a little time with it. Graphics are amazing at times, however there is one HUGE drawback. There is a strange blurring of the distant objects. So, everything in the foreground is nice and sharp, but everything in the background appears like being viewed through a dirty glass. It's strange and honestly, it was giving me a headache. On the plus side, the combos are cool and some of them look really impressive. On the negative side, the voice acting is abysmally bad, like as in porno acting bad. The voices don't match the lip movements either, so it looks like a badly dubbed kung fu movie.

I really enjoyed the demo but I have not played the full game enough to say whether or not I like it. I WANT to like it because I do enjoy Dynasty Warrior type of mindless hack and slash games. The bad voice acting doesn't bother me much because let's face it, how many Japanese made games have decent voice acting? The blurring effect is what I am concerned about most. If it is always so bad that it gives me a headache every time I play it, then it's going on my shelf to await trade-in.

I think what it comes down to is this. If you like games like Dynasty Warriors and have not gotten tired of the endless sequels, then chances are you'll like N3. If you don't like Dynasty Warriors, there is nothing about N3 that would change your mind.

Good for you! Getting a new job and getting far, far away from the scamming boss is the right thing to do.

The description of your old job makes sense now why he didn't have you fill out the W4. He's probably doing it to avoid all the worker's comp and insurance requirements. Since you were a driver for him, the potential for accidents and other road mayhem makes you a higher risk as an employee in his eyes. What a slimeball.

Whoa, I didn't know he was in TV.

Stiffler, actually, it's not the same magazine. Computer Games Magazine is the distant third of the "big 3" computer magazines after Computer Gaming World (soon to be Games for Windows), and PC Gamer. CGM is the one that Steve Bauman (who?) is the editor in chief of. Of the three, I like CGM the best. Their reviews and articles are better written than CGW and PC Gamer.

So, I was over at the QT3 board reading a thread about Tom Chick's Dead Rising review he did for Yahoo (5 out of 5 stars), and on page two of the thread was this little gem, and I quote:

Quote
Good lord, I couldn't disagree more. No one's saying DR is perfect. And that's not what a rating is supposed to reflect. A rating is a matter of how good a game is, not how many points get docked for what decisions or whether it has Starforce* or how the scores for graphics, audio, and UI add up. If you're going to use ratings, don't mistake them for tallies or math or grades. They should be a measure of the writer's enthusiasm, or lack thereof. I couldn't be more enthusiastic about a game than I am Dead Rising, which is why it gets five stars.

Which is also another reasons that percentages are really really stupid.

-Tom

* I think I saw somwhere that some fifth-rate site is supposedly knocking ten percentage points off the rating for every game that uses Starforce.

Congratulations to Ron for running a "fifth-rate" site! Woo hoo!!  icon_lol

Oh man, I feel bad for you. It sounds like a really difficult situation. Honestly, I don't think your dad has much of a choice about retirement. Radiation treatment is not a pleasant experience and depending on how intensive it will be, he's not going to be anywhere close to a physical state strong enough to walk, let alone do hard labor.

Financially, I think you should look into state and federal disability options, which is something different from social security. Your mom could help, but considering the emotional journey she is going to be on, going back to work will be difficult. If you and your brother can help, do it. Family is too important not to. If anyone in the family has 401K money, it might be an option to withdrawl it early. Yes, there will be a tax penalty, but it can be another source of funds to pay the medical bills. Same with investments like stocks and mutual funds.

LE's suggestion about worker's comp is also worth a shot.
