1081  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Need a Primer on HDTV's on: October 26, 2007, 11:08:17 PM
I would recommend an LCD flat panel HDTV. Plasmas are slightly cheaper, but since you mention gaming, then screen burn-in might be an issue if you plan to do a lot of gaming.

As for brands, I like Sony. Yes they are more expensive but the quality is really really good. If you are more cost conscious, you might consider Sharp LCDs. Samsung LCDs are also good. If you want really inexpensive, Vizio is popular, but quality of their LCDs seem to vary quite a bit. If you have the budget for it, get a set that can do 1080p.

Boy is he going to be real disappointed.

Probably because not everyone is online with their consoles. Also, EA has in the past discontinued online support of a bunch of their sports games after a couple of years.

1089  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: School me on marriage on: August 08, 2007, 01:54:51 AM
If you and the girlfriend both feel the situation is fine the way it is, then there is no reason to try to rationalize the lack of marriage, and if other people have a problem with it, then that is their hangup. Your relationship should be based on what YOU feel is right, not what others feel is the "correct" thing to do. The only drawback is of course, having to constantly explain it to friends and family, but that is just a mild annoyance compared to the positives of your relationship. If it works, then it works. Don't bother psycho-analyzing it. You and the GF are at a point in your lives where the priorities are different from other couples. Maybe in a number of years it will change and you'll start having the feeling that getting married is important. Honestly, if you've been living together for a while, then the only difference getting married will make is that you get a nice certificate saying that you're legally married.

1096  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone get Grim Grimoire? on: July 18, 2007, 09:06:18 PM
I have it and I even opened it!  icon_biggrin

I have not played it much but I can give some quick impressions. The graphics are done by the same group that did Odin Sphere, so the anime character designs are very well done and quite colorful. Actually, I think the look for both this game and Odin Sphere are quite fantastic. Basically, Grim Grimoire is a real time strategy game. The unusual aspect is that the "maps" are not top down perspective like common RTS games do. Instead, in GG they are side view areas, like you see in side scrolling arcade games. You create an army of units, explore the environment and fight enemies. I have not gotten too far into the game so unfortunately I can't comment on the overall difficulty of the game, but it definitely plays like an RTS game. The voice acting is decent (you can select English or Japanese).

I guess it comes down to whether or not you like an anime based RTS game.

1100  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Good news for XBOX 360 dogfighting lovers (not that kind of dogfighting) on: July 13, 2007, 07:52:31 AM
Well I've played Ace Combat since the original game on Playstation 1. This new one definitely feels like every other iteration of the series. A big part of whether you will like the new one or not will come down to how accepting you are that it is just more of the same AC formula. I'm a big fan of the series and while the new game seems to be more of the same, I am okay with that. Ace Combat has never been about ultra realism, or even anything vaguely resembling a full blown PC-like flight sim experience. That being said, the graphics are simply stunning. The planes and the terrain look photo-realistic. It's truly incredible how good it looks. Since I am an Ace Combat fan and a graphics whore, this game will be a day one purchase for me.
1101  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Good news for XBOX 360 dogfighting lovers (not that kind of dogfighting) on: July 11, 2007, 03:31:53 PM
The Ace Combat games have always been arcade-like, and after so many iterations of the game since 1995, it's never going to be anything close to a full blown PC flight sim. Anyone hoping for that is going to be disappointed every time an AC game comes out.

Here is the first footage of not only the game but video of people playing it (some of the developers at Harmonix). For people who had doubts about this game, you can now only say one thing: BAD ASS.

The group playing is two on guitar, one on drums and one singing. The drum set looks incredibly awesome to play. Also, it appears they are playing the Xbox 360 version because it looks like the guitars they are using are the 360 Guitar Hero guitars.

1106  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Santa Cruz Info on: July 02, 2007, 06:58:46 PM
The west side of town is generally a lot safer and nicer to live. The closer you get to Natural Bridges state beach the more expensive it will be though. I echo the other senitments about the Boardwalk area. Crowded, lots of homeless people and not the safest area.

If you are looking to move to the area, Soquel, Capitola, Aptos are areas to consider. If you don't mind being a litter farther away from the beach, Scotts Valley is also worth considering.

1108  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is there any new PC game like Panzer General? on: June 22, 2007, 03:27:56 AM
One other game series that might be of interest are the Combat Mission games. Info can be seen at The games are a lot more tactical in nature than Panzer General. In fact the Combat Mission games have a very miniatures-like feel, with all 3d maps, individual vehicles and squads of infantry. There are no hexes or grids in the game. It's all free form movement. The games are simultaneous turn based, meaning you plot your moves at the same time as your opponent then press go and watch both sides' units move. There are three games in the series: Operation Overlord, Barbarossa to Berlin, and Afrika Korps. There is a 4th game in development, due to be released late July, called Shock Force that takes place in modern day Middle East. The series is very easy to learn and there is a lot of detail in the games.

1110  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is there any new PC game like Panzer General? on: June 20, 2007, 11:55:37 PM
Hearts of Iron 2 is not really all that similar to Panzer General. For one thing, the scale is totally different. PG is an operational level game with battalion level units while HOI2 is a grand strategic level game with division level units. Also, HOI2 is a much more complex game where you have to deal with resource management. PG only deals with abstract prestige points. Really the only common thing they share is that both games are turned based WWII games. Other than that, they are completely different.

For something that is more like Panzer General, I think Matrix Games Battlefront is more similar. Steel Panthers is as well.

1112  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: 24: Season 6 Talkback (Spoilers) on: June 09, 2007, 03:37:27 PM
It definitely was a frustrating season to watch. There were times when it was great, but most of the time, things seemed forced or so wildly ridiculous it was painful to watch. I kind of see what the writers were doing this season. After last season's focus on the grand conspiracy and emphasis of the whole scumbag president/wacked out first lady, it seemed like they wanted to make this season more personal with regards to Jack, thus the major focus on his family. Unfortunately, it was all so contrived it was lame.

What the 24 franchise needs is a complete and total reset of the universe. They need to set the next season somewhere other than LA and CTU. Perhaps Washington DC? There have been so many security breaches at CTU LA that I don't think I can take yet another one without screaming. For a complex that is so freaking important to national security, they have more holes in their internal security than a block of Swiss cheese. Whoever thought that breaking into CTU would be as easy as sneaking through the sewers?

If next season is just more of the same in LA, I'm not going to watch anymore.

The other two are all setup and most of it is completely superfluous. "Revenge of the Sith" stands on its own remarkably well which is partly why I treat it as its own film while ignoring the previous two. I also know that I am not alone in this line of thinking. slywink

+1  thumbsup

Looking back,  I thought The Phantom Menace was completely pointless. Attack of the Clones had its moments but was so frustratingly uneven. The overall story was decent, but often derailed by laughably bad dialogue and some truly awkward scenes. For my money though Revenge of the Sith completely redeemed the series. At least Lucas got ONE of the prequel movies right.

Another textbook example of how incompetent managers can destroy even the best of intentions, and Brad McQuaid seems like one of those genius mad scientists who would like nothing more than for society to leave him alone so that he can work on whatever inspires him at any given moment.

What a trainwreck.

1120  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: what time is the 360 dashboard update? on: May 11, 2007, 05:28:05 PM
My 360 was bricked during the last dashboard update. It was a launch unit that was working perfectly up until that point. Luckily I had an extended warranty through Best Buy so I replaced it. This week's updated thankfully did not brick it. There must be something about those launch units that make them significantly less reliable than any unit manufactured in the last 6 to 12 months.

Anyhow, I didn't realize this was one of the new features, but you can now put the console in a low power/standby state when downloads are cued up. So, if you have a bunch of items lined up to download, you can shut down the console, but the downloads continue to download. When everything is done, then the console automatically shuts down completely. In the low power/standby state, the power light on the front will slowly flash. Last night I cued up a whole bunch of items, like the C&C demo, which is a 1GB download. I shut it down before going to bed, and in the morning, the console had turned itself off after finishing.

Also, does navigating around in the dashboards feel a lot quicker? Seemed so to me.
