Human compassion?  Why would I have human compassion for someone that chooses to be nonproductive, if not a drain, to society.  I work hard to be able to afford my luxuries and have to sacrifice my time to be able to afford such things.  If he was starving and naked, I might feel a little sorry just because I "know" him through some messageboards.

You know, I'm not going to get into a pissing match with you or Kratz. No one is forcing either of you to give him money. If you don't, you don't, but to say things like "you need a fucking job", well I don't understand where that kind of nastiness is coming from. Maybe you don't know who Daehawk is, but one thing he is not is some schmuck who just signed up here last week. I've known him since the goddamn Gone Gold days and while he isn't my best friend, I know him well enough that if he's in a bind, I have no problems helping him out. I agree that some people do need to get a job. I never give free handouts to homeless people or bums on the street because it's not the best use of my money. Daehawk is different because I know who he is and if he says he needs a little help, I'll help because I know he'll put the money or whatever to good use.

And now that you've made Daehawk explain his situation, maybe you two should cut him some slack and apologize.

1091  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: God Hand on: October 13, 2006, 05:12:22 PM
I picked it up at Fry's for $25 and played for about two hours last night.

This is one of the more uneven games I've played in a long time. The graphics are barely passable as a PS2 game. The environments are really sparse, with breakable objects (barrels, boxes, oil drums, etc.) randomly located. The object textures are very bland. However, the character graphics are a lot better looking.

Gameplay is where you'll develop a love it/hate it attitude. The fighting is fun in a Final Fight or Streets of Rage sort of way. The camera is just plain annoying. It's locked behind your character, and cannot be rotated, so you don't see who is coming up behind you or from the sides. I started up button mashing, but you can only get so far doing that. The combo system is interesting. You earn money to buy new moves which can then be mapped to the controller in the character screen. Obviously, you start out with basic moves that are not very powerful, but eventually earn more powerful impressive looking moves.

There is a special move wheel that you can bring up by hittng the R1 button. It slows the action way down while you select a move. The special moves you can select are dependent on the number of orbs (up to three) you find. There is also the God Hand mode that is activated with the R2 button. Whent he meter is maxed out you can hit R2 and your guy goes into a kind of overdrive mode where he run, punches and kicks at a high rate of speed.

The best parts of the game are the over the top voice acting, which is really hilarious. The bizarre characters like the two gay wrestlers, the midget Power Rangers, and the scantily clad women. The fighting, which can get ridiculous with the exaggerated moves, like rapid fire stomping and spanking. It's all very bizarre, but very funny.  Between levels, you can buy new moves and spend time in a casino earning money playing various games, like video poker, blackjack, and slot machines.

The game is annoyingly hard, but as far as I can tell, there are unlimited continues, so it's a matter of slogging through with brute force when you get to a difficult part. It took me something like seven attempts to get past the two gay wrestlers. I think there is enough in the game that makes it very entertaining, although it will frustrate you with the difficulty and the lack of camera control. For $25 it's worth it, but I think most people will want to rent it first.

1094  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: NHL Games - Verdict on: September 19, 2006, 07:17:56 PM
I bought both games this week. Last night I tried one game of each to get some quick first impressions.

NHL07 is by far the better looking game. It's no contest in the graphics department. Player and uniform detail in particular are much better than NHL2K7. The one area where 2K7 looks better is the ice surface and the arenas. I've been a 2K7 man for the last several years, but to me their graphics engine seems pretty creaky now. It barely even looks "next generation" and pretty much pales in comparison to NHL07 this year. Also, the frame rate seems more fluid on 2K7. In NHL07, there is a really strange sort of slight jerkiness to the players skating up and down the ice.

Gameplay-wise, it was hard to tell based on one game. However, EA definitely has changed a lot of the AI so that it is no longer the pathetic representation of hockey it has been lately. Defensive coverage is way better, especially on power plays and penalty kill. Players set up properly on the perimeter and in the 4 man PK box. The speed of the game has been slowed down so it is not a track meet. Goalies seem smarter and more fluid. This is the one area I was really impressed with that EA improved. I am still undecided about the lack of the speed boost. Certainly I can understand taking it away since it is unrealistic to constantly sprint from one end of the ice to the other. However taking it away completely might have been a mistake. What should have been implemented was a speed boost that would last two or three seconds at a time with a "cooldown" time where you can't use it.

Of course the huge difference between the two games is NHL07 with the stick control. It really is as good as people have been raving about. There is a bit of a learning curve, but one you get comfortable with it, you'll never go back to the traditional button layout.

Out of the box, the rosters in 2K7 seem more accurate than NHL07.

So for me bottom line was this. NHL2K7 felt like more of the same, with a graphics engine that seems more and more obsolete and downright ugly in places (the coaches look scary). The Cinemotion thing felt pointless. Extra chrome that didn't add anything exciting to the game. NHL07 looks much better and while it may not be as good as 2K7 as an accurate representation of the game of hockey, EA did make enough changes to at least come close. The new stick control scheme makes 07 worth the price of admission alone. It's that good. 2K7 is probably the deeper game, but 07 is definitely the more accessible, instant gratification game.

The logic? Whatever Charles Wang wants Charles Wang gets. The Islanders are nothing more than a cute toy for him to play with.

The best part about the contract? If DiPietro retires early due to injury the balance of the contract is GUARANTEED. Charles Wang better pray that his goalie doesn't develop chronic knee or back injuries during his career.

Oh and he better not be a bust as a goalie. That contract guarantees that he'll be untradeable.

Pauley Shore - See Carrot Top. The stupid surfer thing went out of style, oh, in 1989.

Lindsay Lohan - She USED to be a competent actress back in her early days before she became a prima donna skank. Now she's just a disgusting waste of oxygen.

Will Ferrell and Rob Schneider - two ex-SNL guys who are not funny. Just stupid.
1097  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: NHL 07 IGN Review on: September 12, 2006, 01:24:59 AM
One thing the "review" didn't even touch on at all is the defensive AI, which has ALWAYS been terrible in the EA's NHL games. For all we know, the defensive AI might cause the players to skate aimlessly all over the ice not even following the puck or their defensive assignments. If the AI stinks, then the cool stick controls and "sloppy" nature of the flow of the game is meaningless. Also, there is no mention as to how good the GM AI is in dynasty mode. Okay, it's accurate according to the CBA rules, but how well does the AI manage the league and other teams? Salary cap? Trades? Who knows.

All I know after reading the review is:
1. The graphics look great
2. The new stick control system is great

That's not a review. It barely even qualifies as a preview. I question whether the reviewer even played the game for more than a couple of hours.

The other lame thing about NHL2K7 is that while the Xbox and PS2 versions will be $20 retail, the Xbox 360 version will still be full price at $60. Considering it doesn't look like there is that much different, even graphically, that price difference makes it an OUT for me.

Two words: BAD ASS.

WHY do they always trash the sweet car in every Bond movie? You would think that Q might have noticed a long time ago and started substituting Chevy Novas instead of issuing him Aston Martins, Lamborghinis, or BMWs.

I'll see this on opening night. I love the Bond movies, even the sucky ones. Judging from the trailer, it looks like Daniel Craig's version of Bond is more of the icy, no nonsense, cold blooded variety of spy and waaaay far away from the one-liner cracking smug guy that Pierce Brosnan was at times. Couple of things I didn't like though. Poker? Uhhh, no. Also, what was with the dorky swim trunks? Wearing that goofy thing will get you beat up on the beach.

Oh, and the love interest is the hot chick from Kingdom of Heaven. Meeow.

There was one Genesis RPG strategy game I played for endless hours. I think it was called Warsong. I LOVED that game. Of course, I was fully into the Shining Force games as well. Also played a ton of Shining in the Darkness, which was a more traditional Japanese RPG that the Shining Force games were sort of based on. Somewhere in my garage I have a rectangular milk crate full of Sega Genesis games. Now I'm motivated to go rummage for it this weekend and relive some sweet 1990's gaming.

I picked up that Brazil single disc rerelase today at a Borders bookstore for $19.99. The price is definitely right. Can't wait to check it out and then retire the old non-anamorphic copy.

I also got the Gojira (Godzilla) 2 disc special edition. Then earlier this week I got that sweet Seven Samurai uber-relelase. Haven't watched it yet, but the packaging is very nice. I also got the rerelease of Blade Runner, which is my favorite movie of all time. I've owned the original DVD release from back in the early days of DVD and I think I watched it a grand total of one time in all those years. It was by far the WORST looking DVD I've ever owned. I can now finally do with it what it deserves. Microwaved for 20 seconds on high power. I watched the new release a couple of nights ago, and it was great. Being able to finally see a decent video transfer of the movie was well worth it despite the fact that I'll double dip next year and get the upcoming full blown special edition.

http://www.new.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare7/sevensamurai.htm

and I believe the only new thing with Brazil is the anamorphic widescreen.

Thanks for the link!

That looks very nice.  I might have to upgrade.  I wish there was some kind of exchange program.  I know they reissued Wages of Fear as well.

While I'm sure it would be nice to have Brazil in anamorphic widescreen I think I will survive with the set I have.  It wasn't cheap!  Actually, a little digging around that FANTASTIC site, it looks like the film itself will be released seperate from the whole set.  I am curious if the entire set is being redone.  Might be worthwhile to just pick up the single movie disc to go alongside the set.  I'll have to catch their comparison when they complete it.

Disc 2 and 3 of the Brazil set rerelease are exactly the same as the previous release. No need to double dip the whole thing. Just get the new release of disc 1. Having it in anamorphic widescreen is worth the upgrade.

A friend of mine had a cable card for his new TV and it was pretty much a nightmare.  If, when this Tivo hits the market, I hear glowing reviews of both it and the cable cards Comcast uses I'd be very interested.

Jimmy the Fish, what kind of outputs does this new Tivo have?  Due to my strange setup I need both component AND composite (or s-video) outputs.  Basically I have my Comcast DVR box output via component to my TV in HD if I am watching the television or I output via composite to my PC to watch in a little box when I am working at home.  Sounds complicated but it's not something I am willing to give up at the moment.  You should see the maze of cables I have back there, and I admit that it's amazing it works (since it basically outputs via s-video to the TV which displays it on the TV and then outputs it via composite to my PC All-in-Wonder card). icon_cool  Geek on!

I think our implementation of CableCard is easy. Installation should be pretty simple. I don't know what kind out nightmare could be possible from simply inserting a card into a slot. I'd be curious to hear about your friend's experience.

The outputs on the back of the Series 3 include one HDMI, one set of component (RGB), one S-video and two sets of composite. If I understand your Frankenstein setup icon_smile correctly, you have component and composite outputting from the Comcast DVR box simultaneously. If that is the case, the Series 3 can do the exact same thing. When the Series 3 box is running, video output is sent to all the connector types at the same time. No connectors are disabled if one specific one is active. So, like at work I have a Series 3 running HDMI and composite at the same time to two different TVs.
