Oh man, I can't wait. One of my favorite games ever, and it has an amazing soundtrack by the Gone Jackals.

Damn, last night's tribal council was epic. The person who got voted out got hosed big-time indirectly by Ken the model, who did something so headscratchingly lame it's a wonder he didn't get eliminated himself.
3  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Survivor 2016 - Millennials vs. Gen X on: November 29, 2016, 10:15:26 PM
The random rock draw is the single lamest way to get voted out at tribal. I understand why they all chose to do it, since it comes down to pure probability, but damn, playing so hard up to that point only to get knocked out by random draw.

To me, the show finally started to get interesting once the lovey dovey power couple was eliminated and the merge happened. God, those two were SO annoying.

My guess as to who wins is David. He comes off as a neurotic, but when he's not having an emo episode, he is actually thinking things out and playing strategies, although his idol play at tribal was a major tactical error. The nice thing about this season so far is that the competition to the end seems pretty wide open with things changing week to week. I hate those seasons where the endgame is pretty much a foregone conclusion

Arise!!!

Seriously is anyone still playing this? Hell, does anyone still even have the game installed? After months of radio silence, the most hated and criticized game since Daikatana just got a massive "foundation" patch that adds a ton of fixes and new features including base building, player purchaseable freighters, new game modes, and numerous interface and graphic improvements. It's the first in what Sean Murray claims is a series of patches to make the game what they envisioned.

To be honest, so many new games have come out since No Man's Sky release, I've moved on from it. That plus the major disappointment I felt after playing the game has made it difficult to be interested again, but I'll probably try it again eventually after they release another patch to fix more bugs and flesh out the new stuff that was added in this latest patch release.

Wow, $49 for the leather case, and the silicone case is $39. Apple sure knows how to charge a premium.

This is the case I am using:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IHAJZGY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's a super thin, lightweight case that adds no weight or bulk to the phone. Of course, the big drawback is that it provides no drop protection whatsoever, but it's cheap, it feels really good on my iPhone, and it looks pretty sleek.

Glenn's death was not mishandled because they followed the same imagery and events of the comic. Glenn's death in the comic was a watershed moment in that medium so the show was pretty much obligated to be faithful to the original material.

Okay, I'm going to reveal just how dense I am, but all the stuff in the RV, was that all in Rick's mind or did it really happen? I think it was all in his mind, but the way the episode played out, I'm not entirely certain. The editing was confusing.

Overall, a really rough episode, even if I knew in advance who was going to get it. Seeing it play out was pretty distressing.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is pretty awesome as Negan though. As sadistic and twisted as he is, you cannot stop watching the guy.
10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nintendo Switch - the NX unveiled on: October 20, 2016, 06:36:16 PM
No idea about the validity of this. I'm sure we'll know in the coming days and weeks but apparently the portable screen displays a max resolution of 720p, so I'm assuming there is going to be some upscaling  being done by the dock unit. Thing is, what do game developers have to do to their games? Do they do native 1080p support and the portable hardware do downscaling, or vice versa?

The GPU is a custom nVidia Tegra chip. Isn't that mobile device GPU? While it should have low power requirements I wonder if it has the horsepower to run complex games at 1080p.

I don't know. Obviously no one should ever underestimate Nintendo but my personal impression is that they developed a hybrid console that won't excel at handheld gaming or traditional console gaming. Plus, it's cartridge based. Unless they can cram the same amount of data as a blu ray disc based system I wonder how much cross platform games will have to be compromised to run on the Switch.

I watched Kingsglaive recently as well. Aaron Paul's voice acting was surprisingly excellent. I think the story got terribly convoluted in the second half, which I've come to expect in a Final Fantasy property. I still don't know why Nix didn't die in that pivotal scene near the end. He was special somehow and it totally went over my head why he was. Oh well.

That being said, the CGI animation was quite possibly some of the best CGI I've ever seen. Really quite spectacular, especially the photorealism of the people's faces and their expressions. The whole way the mercenaries used their weapons to instantly teleport from place to place was really cool.

I'm totally ready to play the game because it looks like the end of the movie ties in directly to the beginning back story of the upcoming game.

Batman: Return to Arkham
Battlefield 1
Lego Harry Potter Collection

All for PS4. When will I have time to play them all, that's the mystery.

I finally got a 7 Plus (matte black) to replace a Galaxy Note 4.

I have not had a chance to really explore how good the camera is but after being an iPhone person since the very first model, then taking a 2 year break with a Note 4, being back on an iPhone was surprisingly smooth. Like riding a bike. Compared to the Note 4, the 7 Plus feels so much responsive. No lag at all moving around the screens and launching apps. The Note 4 had annoying lagging in general and the battery was starting to hold a shorter charge so I switched at the perfect time.

I also have Carplay integration in my SUV. It's the first time I've been able to try this feature and wow, is it awesome. Being able to do texting all through Siri is really cool.

PS4: Tomb Raider and Dragon Quest Builders
3DS: Disney Magical World 2

Sadly, I canceled my PS4 VR pre-order. I was all gung-ho months ago when I placed the order but the lukewarm reviews have made me reconsider and now I'm taking a wait and see attitude. The VR games that have gotten reviewed so far have not been great. I thought Battlezone VR would be a killer app but it sounds like it is far short of that. EVE: Valkyrie was the one game I felt was going to be system seller for me, but now I am thinking whether or not shelling out $400 to play one game is really worth the investment. I'm actually more interested in getting a PS4 Pro instead since I am on the verge of getting a 4K TV. Right now, the PS4 Pro seems like the more lasting long term purchase instead of the VR unit.

Well...we're a couple of weeks away from the season premiere. Wonder who Negan whacks. paranoid

On Geeking Out, Greg Nicotero said that the premiere will be the most emotionally gut wrenching episode ever. We'll see.
18  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] The Walking Dead Season 6 (Careful there will be Spoilers!) on: October 03, 2016, 11:58:12 PM
And with that, season 2 comes to an end, with everything pretty much left as a cliffhanger.

Man, this show is so wildly inconsistent. The whole premise of starting out the season on the boat seemed pretty interesting and they did take it in some new directions. I think the problem with the show is that most of the characters were terribly written. One note personalities who often did completely reckless and illogical things, as well as weird liberties with the timeline of both the progression of the apocalypse and the immediate events directly affecting the characters. One thing that really annoyed me was the notion that smearing yourself with zombie blood and giblets would allow you to walk among the dead untouched. In the Walking Dead, it was used as a tactic of last resort and that show always made it seem like a very risky thing to do that invited things to go very wrong. Yet on Fear, it's done so matter of factly that no one even thinks twice about it. That strategy was taken to a ridiculous extreme in the final episode too and just made me cringe.

However, I thought the two hour finale for the most part really redeemed the whole season. First of all, they crammed a ton of stuff into the finale, with the pace really amped up. Second, more importantly to me, they completely changed the nature of the mom and dad characters and opened up lots of new possibilities with them that hopefully will evolve them beyond the one dimensional idiots they were up to now. The dad (Travis) in particular could be headed in a VERY dark direction. The kids though are still kind of 'meh'. Enough good stuff happened at the end that I'll continue watching when season 3 rolls around.

Let us know how long the battery charge lasts. It's nice to get an idea about real world use conditions.

Oh, and I'd also be interested in seeing some low light or night time photos.

Congratulations though. Nice looking phone. I've always appreciated Apple's attention to industrial design.

Just ordered a 256GB 7 Plus.

Reading various reviews, it sounds like the camera is about on par with the Galaxy S7/Note 7 camera, which is what I was hoping for.

I wonder if there are any theories that no one dies. There are several ways this could realistically happen. Sudden walker heard or maybe they somehow manage to get the upper hand. Who knows, but it's an acceptable outcome if you ask me. They somehow escape and the stage is then set for total war.

If that were to happen, the shark would have jumped so hard, it'd be in orbit.

I watched the live event online and boy, Apple sure does an expert job at being pretentious. I had to chuckle because as far as I can tell the camera is now about in line with my Galaxy Note 4. Only Apple can hype features that are a couple of years late.

That being said, the camera is THE most important thing to me. Two years ago, I switched from being an iPhone person to the Samsung Note 4 because the camera simply blew away the iPhone's camera at the time. While the switch to Android didn't bother me that much, I still missed the aesthetic simplicity of the iPhone. So as long as the iPhone 7 camera is on par with the Note 4 I'll definitely switch back.

I was debating phone cameras with my co-workers yesterday.  Here's an interesting article comparing the Galaxy S7 (same camera as Note 7 I believe) and the iPhone 6S.

http://www.greenbot.com/article/3060209/android/smartphone-camera-shootout-galaxy-s7-vs-iphone-6s.html

Sounds to me like professional (or more serious) photographers would prefer the iPhone (even more so now in the 7 where you will be able to output RAW), but the S7 has better low light performance and gives better (for the most part) looking shots straight up.

Well, I'm far from being a pro but the game changer to me is that the Samsung phones do a much, much better job taking good photos in low light, night time, and in zoom mode. Mind you, when I switched to the Note 4 I was coming from an iPhone 5 so the difference was quite dramatic. I've seen low light photos taken with an iPhone 6 and while better than the 5, visually it clearly was inferior to the Note 4. The other thing that was obvious to me was that the color saturation was much better on the Note 4. Colors looked more vibrant and rich. I find that the iPhone photos have more muted colors. Now, which one more accurately reflects reality is probably a different debate, but every time I show photos I take with my Note 4 to people they always comment how great the colors look and how the night time shots looks so much better than the iPhone.

One feature that Phil Schiller made a big deal about on stage was the bit where pictures can now be taken where the foreground object, like a person, is in focus but the back ground is out of focus which creates a nice effect that highlights the foreground object. Well, the Samsung phones have had that ability for the last couple of years. You have to download a free plug-in from the Samsung app store to get it, but it's not a new smartphone feature. As much as I've loved having the iPhone in the past, Apple has been a few steps behind Android phones for years, but if you are fully invested in iPhones then you don't really know what you're missing unless you switch.

But like I said, the camera is the most important thing to me. If the iPhone 7 Plus now brings the camera on par with Samsung, I would gladly switch back. The commotion about the earphone jack doesn't really bother me much.

**I wrote the above and posted it, then I read the article your linked, Rittchard, and it pretty much mirrors my feelings, although in my experience photos of people look pretty natural to my uneducated eyes.

This is a really weird game. Actually, it's not much of a game as it is a technical system. The programming behind it is very impressive considering the countless permutations of planets and biology possible. The graphics are cool and there is definitely a sense of sci-fi wonder, but the story seems to be highly minimalist. The main problem to me is that while the environments are countless, you do the same thing on every planet. Mine resources, inspect landmarks, scan the biology, rinse and repeat. You are alone in this big colossal universe with really not a whole lot to do, and without any sort of interaction with other players, the monotony sets in fairly quickly, despite how pretty it all looks.

Sean Murray was so in love with his tech that he failed to realize people want an actual game to go along with it.
28  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Netflix] Stranger Things on: August 03, 2016, 04:51:49 PM
Couple of things.

I think how much you like the show is directly related to how connected you are to the 80's. For me, I grew up in the 80's so it holds a lot of emotional impact and memories, thus I think Stranger Things is pretty damn fantastic.

That said, I do agree that Winona Ryder was the weak link in the show. She's a pretty one note character through the entire series. Not much depth to her which is surprising since all the other main characters are so interesting.

I will actually get this. I played it when it first came out on XBox360 and played the hell out of it. Problem is that it's so massive and time consuming I eventually stopped because I was distracted by countless other games at the time. If I were to go back to it, I'd probably be completely lost in terms of story and progress. If a remaster comes out on PS4, with better looking graphics, I would not mind starting over, and maybe even finishing it this time.  icon_razz

My brother is an architect/designer and he ended up moving to Hong Kong about 6 or 7 years ago because he could not find work in the U.S. He worked for a firm in LA for several years but got frustrated because of the politics and BS pecking order dynamic in the industry. It also didn't help that the U.S. economy was really down back then so there wasn't much investment in new building. Anyhow, he moved to Hong Kong because the Chinese economy was booming there and there were tons of projects available. The clients were also a lot more receptive to innovative design ideas too so my brother got to work on some really interesting projects.

However, he has decided to move to Vietnam because the Chinese economy has been slowing down in the last year or two and business has dried up. He keeps talking about the impending economic bubble, which is not a good thing for the world economy but a lot of people feel it will happen. Vietnam, of all places, seems to have a lot of design opportunities right now, so he's following the money.

I never ran into any issues knowing where to jump or climb. It felt pretty intuitive to me. The ledges and hand holds were pretty obvious visually and the locations were small enough to figure out quickly in the few instances where it was not obviously apparent where to go.

Man, this game is flat out the best looking game I've ever seen. The graphics are incredible, and it truly is like playing a movie. The dialog is incredibly well written and believable and I can totally picture someone like Jeremy Renner or Nathan Fillion playing Drake in an actual Uncharted movie.

I loved the quiet scene at Drake's house and his conversation with Elena. There is an awesome game within a game moment there that just blew me away.

I am tired as hell this morning but I want to get right back into it tonight.
