Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dragon Age Install Problems with 64bit Win 7?

It's definitely a problem with the installation files. I've copied the contents of the disc to a folder (successfully, so no issue with the DVD rom) and tried to run the install from there. It fails in the same place again, this time only running off the hard drive. Don't understand though how files on one disc can be corrupt when they're being mass printed by the millions? Unless it's another issue? Do DRM errors still come into play if I'm installing from a folder on my HD and not from a disc drive?
DRM shouldn't come into play off the hard drive, and really shouldn't come into play when installing off the DVD either, that is if the DRM is just a simple disc check at game load time, which is what DA:O uses. There is no securerom drm in Dragon Age. That was explicitly stated by the developers. The only thing it does is a disc check at the start of the game. So, did you ever try after disabling the A/V? Also, check your Windows running processes and see what's going on there. Lastly, can you post the exact error message you're getting?

Bioware has responded to the allegations of a $7 storage fee. Apparently, Tom Chick made a post about the "storage fee" and how EA seemed to be milking their customers. The DA:O lead systems designer responded: Hey Tom, For what it's worth, 'EA' has nothing to do with this (apart from being the parent company of BioWare). The game was designed with limited inventory for a number of reasons, the least of which being to limit savegame size and therefore loadtimes. Originally there was a small storage chest in the party camp, until we realized that due to the fact that there are several versions of the camp area (for reasons evident in the story) and that people were losing their items (as they were stored in the area). By the time this problem was discovered, we had not enough time to fix the problem, plus, we decided that it was not really necessary anyway since the item limitation was rather generous compared to the initial designs at least. The game was finalized tested without a storage chest. The item limit was never questioned or brought up during the QA phase, after all, it was part of the design. The 'storage chest' in Warden's Keep DLC was added by the DLC team as part of their 'hey, what would be a cool feature for your own keep' brainstorming. I'm fine with you being upset about the item limit design in the game - and fine with you being upset about the chest being included in the DLC, but I must protest the 'Oh, EA is pushing the limit for more money' tagline, because that's just not what has happened. I categorically reject that any features or game systems in this game were designed or removed to 'bilk users for more money'

Looks like it's not Windows 7 related. I tried to install on my XP box, with the same results. About 5 seconds in I get 'Dragon Age Installer has encountered and error and needs to close' on XP. On Win 7 it was a different error message but similar amount of time into the file copy process.
So is this a problem with corrupt media? My DVD drive firmware is up to date. I tried changing the path from C to another drive letter with no success. I do have anti-virus running, but in 2009 I don't believe that's the problem. I've installed hundreds of games with anti-virus running without problems. I suppose I'll try that.
I would definite try without the A/V. Is the same A/V on both machines? If it's not the A/V then it sounds like a bad disc maybe. I've been following the DA:O thread at GamersWithJobs and there have been some to get bad 360 version discs. If it's not working on either of your machines, I'm not sure what else it could be.

We need to change the title of this thread to "one mans garbage is now my 51" paperweight"
I had a 51" rear-projection last year that developed a very blurry, washed out looking picture. It was 4 or 5 years old, and I wanted a new one anyway. I felt like I was lucky just getting a guy to come pick it up for free. It worked, and probably could have been repaired, but it was a 200 lb behemoth, and didn't even have HDMI connections. msteelers, following your link on that model, it maxes at 1080i, which is quite dated, and not great IMO. It'll be fine for just watching TV, but you'll miss out on 720p and 1080p gaming. Again, fine if you just want it for TV, but I'd be careful on how much you spend to repair it, when that money could go towards a far better, new TV with many more features.

I'm not sure why people pick on Fox for their slant when something like CNN has its own slant. The sad thing is that all of our new sources in the U.S. are tainted in some way by a particular agenda.
Fox goes far beyond having a subtle slant. And ragging on Fox isn't necessarily a commendation of CNN or any others. I think CNN is garbage, essentially tabloid journalism, but not in the same league with Fox when it comes to promoting a political agenda.

Fox News is so obvious is scares me to think that they can call themselves "fair and balanced."
They're just as impartial as all the rest - in other words, not at all. Uh... yeah. Ale Yeah, FOX is not just impartial, they are a blatant propaganda machine. In my life, I've never seen anything like it, and am amazed that this is what has become of a major network in the U.S. I'm all for free speech, and there's obviously a market for their brand of "news", but they have taken bias to new, astronomical levels.

I dunno, is there anything that in 1993 you thought you'd be able to do by now, that you can't? Yeah, stop going to the gas pump. It's shameful that we're still dependent on a 100 year old technology for our main transportation. Or that you can do easily today, that you never dreamed you'd be able to now? I think what I'm most amazed about that I can do now is get virtually any piece of public information in seconds. If I want to see how to beat the final boss of my current video game, I can be watching a video of the fight in as long as it takes me to type it youtube. If I want to recall when Lucille Ball died, I can find out in seconds. If I want the recipe for Red Lobster's cheese biscuits, it's mine almost instantly. I can see any movie trailer at will. I can learn how to wire a light socket, with video instruction, at will. So I guess I'd say in short, the instantaneous availability of almost all the world's public information resources at my fingertips. I also think it's pretty cool that I can chat with, and play video games with people virtually anywhere in the world, for free.

Mr Lettuce,
I must exclaim my extreme displeasure in your decision to create a thread stating that you are the worst fighting game player of all time, when that title clearly belongs to me. That you got 31,000 points in any challenge map in Arkham, undeniably proves that you are better at melee combat than myself. How dare you try to claim my title! I demand an apology, and full submission of the Fighting Belt of Suck to me at once.
Sincerely, Jeff (4900 pts high score in Sewer Bat)
You probably don't want to know what Kato and I scored in Sewer Bat Extreme, then. I can only imagine. I've seen the insane scores on the PSN list ... 60,000, etc. You know that fight just before the final fight in the game? Oddly, it didn't frustrate me (much).

You didn't tell the price.
It's $400. It wouldn't be a good deal for me even if I didn't have a 360, as I have no need for a 2nd controller, and I have zero interest in MW2. I have a 120GB drive now, 3 or 4 games installed, lots of XBLA games, and a huge amount of Rock Band DLC, and I still have 78GB free.

i just finished the game on normal difficulty tonight with all of the riddles, upgrades, and bios collected...fantastic game from start to finish. i can honestly say that this is one of my favorite games that i've played in a very long time...definitely my best so far this year. i really can't remember the last time i played a game that felt so well polished. everything from the art design, to the story, to the gameplay and general atmosphere of the game was just spot-on perfect for what i would want from a Batman game. now that i've finished the story, i can dig into the challenge mode that everyone is talking so much about...can't wait to check it out Just finished too, and you basically just wrote my feelings on the game. I'll go a step further and call it one of the best games I've ever played in genre, on any platform. I'm tempted to call it a masterpiece.

It looks like there are a bunch of those Riddler things where you have to examine certain objects in the game, so that could provide lots of extra looking around if I get sick of beating on thugs. Which may not happen. The 'riddles' work like this: There are specific zones in the game, and each zone has X number of Riddler challenges to find. They can be: * Joker teeth = use the quick batarang on every one of those you see to smash them. you'll get a bit of XP, plus if you get 5, 10, and then all 20 in each zone, you get a bonus and a Riddle solved. * "?" symbols painted on the wall - these are usually the big question mark (only visible in detective mode), but the dot will be missing. You have to locate the dot and situate your viewing angle so that the dot and question mark align, then press and hold ... uh... whatever it is on the PC to "scan" the picture. * simple riddler question mark "trophies". These you just walk near them and pick them up and you're done. Nothing more to solve. The tricky part is getting to them. Some are obvious and easy, others are much better hidden, and some require gadgets to get to them that you don't necessarily possess yet. Keep in mind you'll be doing some backtracking in the game, so if you can't access a riddler question mark trophy yet, don't sweat it, you can come back and get it later. * Riddles ....each zone has an overall riddle to it, and you will see the green text of the riddle displayed as you enter the zone. It's a clue, and solving it involves spotting something and then doing a detective mode scan of it. A good tip would be to try and find the Riddle map for each zone. Somewhere in the zone is the riddler's map showing the general location of all his riddles for that zone. If you get it, you can open your map, and you'll see green question marks floating about in a general area. It's very helpful, but keep in mind that it doesn't account for layers in the map - so it could be displaying a riddle location right where you are, but it could be a floor above you, or a floor below you, something like that. There are 240 total riddles in the game. Good luck!

My local BBs carry the wireless version for PC (including adapter, which is probably why it's so godawful expensive), but I have no need for it. They don't carry the wired version, for some reason. I'll check some other locations.
Look for it in the XBOX360 section, not the pc gamepad section. The hardware is the same and you can just download the drivers from Microsoft (or maybe Windows will autodownload them for you, haven't tried it). Exactly, just buy a wired 360 controller, and plug it in to your PC. For me, it "just worked" with XP, Vista, and Win 7.

That's only if you pre-ordered from Gamestop They got the exclusive .... again. I'm sick of this "exclusive" bullshit. A demo should not be a consumer reward, it should be a demonstration (and thus a marketing tool) freely available to all upon release.

I'm going to say maybe The Negotiator with Kevin Spacey and Sam Jackson.
For Sam Jackson, I prefer his "negotiation" with Brett in Pulp Fiction. "Tell me Brett, what does Marcellus Wallace LOOK like?" Not sure if this one counts or not, but a favorite of mine is Marge Gunderson at the desk of Jerry Lundegard in Fargo.

You might have pressed a hotkey that disables them. Look in the menus somewhere for "Quick Preferences". should be there IIRC. If not, it will be under regular preferences somewhere.

It exists, just not here. Fanboys tend to be younger, and like someone else said, we have an older demographic here.
Yep, I think fanboyism is most definitely a 'young guy' thing. Mostly for teens and college age people with not much in the way of expendable income. Aside from the maturity issues with fanboyism, my theory is that it's mostly financial. What possible reason can there be to fight over which system is better if you can afford all 3? I think it's pretty clear at this point that all 3 systems are pretty damn good, and all have strong points and a few weak points. Younger people (on average) tend to have less money thus choose one console, and then vehemently defend the thing they just spent 75% of their free income on. Another thing to consider is the fact that the Wii really shouldn't be in the argument at all, IMO. Is there seriously a defense that a person should forego the 360 or PS3 in favor of the Wii? seems like apples & oranges to me.

I'd say your choice. I think they are fairly independent of each other. I'd get the first one on the cheap if possible, to make sure you like the gameplay style before dropping $60 on the new one.

Biggest problem is that if you download the Juggernaut pre-order character, you can't play with people who didn't get it. This is complete bullshit.
What's complete bullshit is this new trend of giving 'exclusives' to various systems, or even worse, to various stores. Just put all the fucking characters in all the versions. Buy from Wal-Mart you get X Buy from Gamestop you get Y Buy from Amazon, you get N It all adds up to selling an incomplete game to everyone.

You don't see it much anymore (never really did here, but there was some). Has it disappeared? If so why? If not, where is it?
If you're referring to PS3 vs 360, I think it's because most gamers own both now.

Yes, PS3. Not quite sure what that means. When you put your thumb drive in, did it show up under the Photos, Music and Videos menus as a valid source? It should and helps show it is being recognized first. When I then went to my BAA game save, hit triangle for options and then 'Copy', one of the copy destinations listed was my thumb drive. And then just selected it. The copy back is pretty much the same, find it on the thumb drive and copy. You don't have any control over exactly where it goes in both places, btw, but that should be all there is to it.
Thanks. For some reason mine's not showing up. It's a brand new Kingston data traveler, pretty standard fare. so not sure why it's not being recognized. Any chance it's not formatted as FAT32? That's required for the PS3 to 'see' it properly. I think that's it, it's probably formatted NTFS. I'll check that, thanks for the tip. edit: yep, just checked, it was NTFS, reformatting it FAT32.

Just pre-ordered at Amazon. There's a lot of positive buzz around Shift, I played it at bit at E3 but not for long. Others who have put a lot of time into it say it's incredible. Between GT5, Forza, and Shift, I'm choosing Shift this year.
GT5 is hardly in the running for "this year". It'll be amazing if it sees the light of day in 2010.
