The Grue - I'm with you.  Dark Souls remains my favorite G.O.A.T.

Greg - Until Dark Souls, I never had used a XBOX controller either.
I tried DS with keyboard/mouse, and found it so very lame.
I ran out and bought a $30 controller, wired, and never looked back.  I highly recommend/second the suggestion on giving it a try with a controller......

I'm playing a second playthrough, this time as a high-INT build sorcerer.  I agree with Glycerine that playing Sorcerer makes a lot of the game easier - at least for the first half.
However, where I was 'ok' at multiplayer with my Mace-wielding dude, i'm finding it really hard to not get completely ganked in MP with my sorcerer.  Primarily due to targeting (though the homing spells help quite a bit).  I'm sure i"ll get better, but just pointing out that where Sorcerer makes SP easy, its quite a challenge in MP.

Outside of the occasional cheating - I really really like DS's multiiplayer environment.  COOP is pretty cool (Jolly Cooperation!)

Reemul - I really enjoyed LA Noire, despite the bad press.  Played it on the PC - if you can look past some poor combat mechanics, and focus on story and puzzle solving, as well as the awesome setting, I'm betting you'll enjoy it.

Late to the party, but loving the game.  Any of you still playing?  Would dig some coop and what-not.

So it's free until April 2014.......not sure there will be a huge addressable market for paying for the DLC 2 years from now.

Good call on Shadowrun!

One's I'd love to see and would waste many hours on....:

Thief
Morrowind (using Skyrim engine)
No One Lives Forever

Skyrim - Love the game for all the same reasons already noted; game world has pulled me in as no other Elder Scrolls before it.  I actually find myself interested in the politics, race details, back-history, and religion that is laid out in the quests, and supplemented/enhanced in the 500+ books.  Really well done.  And after 35 hours, not one single CTD.
The avalanche of new material that will come when  the tools are released means i'll be playing this game throughout the year.

Runner's Up:
Witcher 2
L.A. Noire

May have found an answer to my own question....gotta click the Skyrim4G.exe to get the benefit.

http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/476210-the-4gb-exe/
So if I have  4 gb ram but am running a  32 bit OS do I still get benefit from that mod?

My understanding is that the mod only benefits those with 64-bit Windows & => 4GB RAM.
I think the reason the mod was needed in the first place was that Bethesda decided not to allow the game to access 4GB as the benefit would only be for machines that were 64-bit OS + =>4GB.
However, I think they recognize that it is the top mod for players, and will probably include it in a future Skyrim patch.

Got a bit of vacation, so finally got around to getting Skyrim.
Regarding the 4GB mod - I downloaded it from SkyrimNexus using Download manager - and 'installed it' using the DM app.  Then I assume I launch the game from the D/L MGR - but can I also assume that the 4GB mod is used as the exe?  The 4GB Mod directions are to launch the game by directly executing the Skyrim4GB.exe.  Can't tell if the D/L MGR Skyrim launcher is tied to the 4GB exe.

Any way to ensure I am using the 4GB mod as the Skyrim exe via the DL MGR?

Question on those street crimes - is there an option to incapacitate a bad guy instead of putting two in their dome?  I've been unsuccessful so far in trying to "wing" one instead of creating A DOA - and if there are different ways to do the street crimes, are there differing benefits outside of just completing the task?

Been meaning to post - After the last Steam patch, and after a correction on my part with config, I have had no further issues with the game, and am really liking it.
I am almost done with Traffic missions, and have had no further technical issues.
Best adventure game I've played in years.

Whatever the fix was, it fixed me good - at least I can play the game now.

However, investigating one of the first cases in front of the shoe store, getting horrible lag/slow downs. Like playing a slide-show.  Not sure why performance went into the gutter.

thanks guys,
I'll try running Steam in "admin" mode, though I thought I already was by default.

Wish I had held out my $$$ for Skyrim frown

Blackjack, I'm having the same .net 3.5 error - it didn't install, and everytime i try to start the game, is chugs than dies.

I deleted .net 3.5, rebooted, reinstalled it, started game back up, same thing.
What did you do to get over the hump?
18  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rage on: October 02, 2011, 12:39:57 AM
I pre-ordered Friday night, and got an error message on pre-load "The Steam serves are currently too busy to handle any more preloads of RAGE.  Please try again in a few hours."

I have tried periodically off-and-on for the last 24 hours, and get same error message (as of 20:30 edt).
Reading Steam forums, seems to be common issue.

I'm guessing the left-out hubs will find their way to market via DLC - and I will probably gladly pay for all of them.
I'm in about 26 hours, just finished Montreal, pacifist and stealth build.  Hoping I am only half way through - don't want it to end!

Actually, i second the earlier question on being a pacifist.  I haven't killed anyone "directly" so far, but......I may have hacked a turrent or two and indirectly caused the death of 15-20 guards so far.
Assuming there is some notice of playstyle at end of game, does using turrents impact whether I "acted with restraint" and/or impact which ending of the game I get?  Anyone know?
21  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Lulz and "50,000 user's gaming forum accounts" on: June 26, 2011, 08:57:11 PM
Looks like as Lulz's last hurrah they apparently released 50,000 usernames, email addresses, and encrypted passwords of "various video game forum users", among other data including AT&T internal LTE docs and 500K user/pass's for Battlefield Heroes players.

Can't seem to find a ready-made list of the Gaming forums that were hit....

22  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - Impressions, Mods and all that good stuff! on: June 13, 2011, 08:30:21 PM
I'm really enjoying the game too - no issues, 17 hours in, and still on chapter 1 (though about to close it out).

I am apparently in the opposite camp as most, in that I really like the difficulty level.  Started on EASY, as I was not getting how to do the combat effectively, but slowly got better, and have been playing on Normal since around hour 5.  It is challenging, but as you grow you can really appreciate how much more ass you can kick.  I'm at level 11, and killin' stuff in Chap 1 is breezy.
I dig that there will be a great reason to play through a 2nd time with different story arc - plan on upping the difficulty level on my 2nd time through, for sure.  That should keep me busy until an expansion.

I'm usually a big, big fan of wide-open spaces, ala FO 3 and FOLV - and get claustrophobic/bored of smaller areas of play.  This happened when I played Witcher 1 - the swamp area really bogged me down.
Witcher 2, however, makes such good use of relatively small areas that they offer, that I never notice the "walls".  Graphics and excellent story (with supporting touches, like NPC storytellers, books, etc) make the world feel deep, and IMO make excellent use of the areas that are available.

My only criticism so far is that I wish there were more incentive with the dice game - though I do l like how the game was incorporated into the story arc.

I'm enjoying the game and story so much I think I may go back and give Witcher 1 a retry, see if I can get past what area(s) I got bored with previously.  Curious if its going to be hard to get into, given I like the way combat was implemented in 2.
