Any of you guys playing with quick counts on?  I am and I do like it because I can get through games quicker but it seems that my pitchers pitch count hits the 90ís by the 5th-6th inning.  Just wondering.

I'm using quick counts and I have a love-hate relationship with it. I love it because with two young kids my gaming time is extremely limited and I can get through a couple of games in an hour with quick counts on. It also does a reasonably good job of mixing things up so I'm forced to deal with a variety of hitter's counts or pitcher's counts, etc.

I also don't like it because it sometimes puts me in situations where it's hard to succeed. Bases loaded, 2 out, and my next hitter starts at 3-2. That sucks. Bases loaded, 2 out, and my pitcher starts the next batter off at 3-0. That's tough, too. But the worst is if I'm down by a run late and get a speedster on first and my next batter starts with two strikes thereby preventing me from bunting him to scoring position. In general, I hit worse with quick counts because otherwise I would always take the first pitch and get my "eye" in early in the count to get a feel for the timing and try work a hitters count. Can't really work the count very well in quick counts. The flip side is that pitching can be easier because you can be stuck in a bad situation but have the next batter start out with two strikes, so you're one pitch away from getting out of a jam. But these less than ideal situations aren't that common so I just deal with them because the positives outweigh the negatives for my particular gaming situation. Without quick counts I would get through maybe three weeks of a season before the next version of the game came out.

I was having a really tough time hitting and was striking out 10+ times per game and couldn't figure out why. I couldn't get my Dynamic Difficulty above Rookie which was insulting because I was an All-Star level hitter last year. Then I read that turning off Guess Pitch helps because while guessing correctly is a huge boost, it also hampers your ability to make good contact when you swing at a pitch you didn't guess correctly. I didn't know that, I thought it just gave you a boost and had no negative side effects otherwise.

So I turned off the Guess Pitch feature and just started looking for pitches in certain locations myself, using directional hitting to help square up a pitch in hitters counts. And in the last three games I've got 10+ hits and scored 6+ runs and improved my hitting difficulty from Rookie to Veteran, and am already making progress towards the next step up.  I should hit my sweet spot for difficulty soon.

Dynamic Difficulty is still the best feature that anyone has ever incorporated into a sports video game, by the way.

PS4 or PS3?  I'm still on a PS3 and wondering if I should buy this year's version.

PS4. I haven't played the PS3 version so I can't comment on how much they upgraded over last year's.

This year's version is a huge upgrade from 2014. The graphics are some of the best I've seen on the console and they managed to pull them off without the frame-rate hiccups that plagued last year's version. The gameplay is so much improved. Fielding is actually a ton of fun now. There are a ton of variety in how balls come off the bat. You can really work the count and force walks. Hitting against elite pitchers is very tough (as it should be) but you can light up middle relief scrubs if you're patient and wait for your pitch.

I'm going to be putting a lot of time into this game.

Have MLB 15 The Show arriving tomorrow from Amazon. Excited to play this since its been years since I played a baseball game and I watched their entire developers tournament on YouTube and it was a blast.

I played a bit last night and it's unbelievably good. A giant step forward from last year's version.

MLB The Show is a no-doubter. The main reason I got my PS4 in the first place was for this franchise.

Sony needs to step up their AAA title game for the PS4. Xbox One got Tomb Raider Remastered and PS4 gets more indies. In fact the only AAA title I can recall PS+ giving out is the DLC for Infamous.

Video game ratings are irrelevant to me. I couldn't even tell you what half of the games on my shelf are rated. If the gameplay is good and the story is decent I don't care how "mature" or how potty-mouthed the characters are.

You understand not everyone is the same age as you, right?

I do, but the question posed in the OP was "Do ratings matter to YOU". With an example about how KD will skip PG-13 horror movies because they aren't horror enough. So in that context, nope doesn't matter to me. My kids are too young to play video games.

Maybe we're just too old for their shit? I know that the location by my house is always overrun with kids and teenagers not old enough to drive buying a ton of stuff. The location is such that it's the only place within walking distance to get video games. So unless parents are available to drive their kids to a wal mart or best buy the place is packed, especially after school hours.

14  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Help me pick my next game on: February 18, 2015, 08:15:53 PM
So I ended up going with Shadows of Mordor. I read through the giant thread over on OO and watched some YouTube videos and the gameplay seems right up my alley. Also, with two little kids at home my gaming time is usually in 45 minute to hour long bursts and SoM seems to ideal for that type of situation. I haven't tried it yet as I had to wait for it to download last night but I hope to get a bit of time in tonight. I'm still going to try DA:I one day, but as was mentioned above it'll probably be cheaper in a few months when I'm ready to dive in. SoM should carry me over until The Show 15 comes out and then that game will eat up most of my time.

Thanks to everyone who offered their thoughts and opinions! They were helpful.
15  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Help me pick my next game on: February 17, 2015, 09:02:09 PM
I really want to get DA: I if only because I want to get involved in a big, deep RPG. But there is no guarantee I'm going to like it since it's been years since I've played a tactical RPG. SoM, however, is right up my alley. I really like Action RPGs. So I *should* get that to stay in my comfort zone, right? But I've heard such good things about DA: I. I want to experience that joy too!!!!

I've ruled out the shooters as I just realized I still have BF4 left unplayed from the last sale. So that will have to scratch my FPS itch for now.

Decisions, decisions.

PSN is having a big sale this week on a lot of good stuff. I'm going to buy one game, just not sure which one. I'm picking one from the list below. Which do you guys recommend? I'm leaning towards either Shadow of Mordor or Dragon Age but can be persuaded otherwise. I like shooters, 3rd person games like AssCreed and Last of Us, and have dabbled in the occasional RPG but wouldn't mind getting into one (not sure if DA:I is the place to start though).

NOTE: prices are in CDN $ so subtract a few $$$ to get the US equivalent. Should also be noted that full retail price for games here in Canada are $69.99.

Dragon Age : Inquisition - $42
Shadow of Mordor - $35
Wolfenstein - $24
Far Cry 4 - $42
Call of Duty: AW - $46

This is a weak month for me. After First Light last month I was hoping we'd get some more AAA content. Hell, I'd take Knack at this point. Disappointed that it's only the PS3 Thief and not the PS4 version.

Overall, in my 13 months with PS+ I have been very underwhelmed with the PS4 offerings.

I'm a stupid sucker for city building Freemium games and I hate myself a bit for it. First it was the Simpsons: Tapped Out, now it's SimCity: BuildIt. I never spend a dime on these games because I have the patience of a saint, but they scratch that 10 minute gaming itch each night while I queue up resources and build more things and I have fun watching my little cities grow bigger over time.

I wouldn't call it "hiding" those games from your wife, I'd say it's more selecting your audience.

Would you watch The Expendables or Game of Thrones with your wife?  Or would you more likely wait for a night/weekend she's not around and watch it then?

I started playing GTA V while my wife sat on the couch doing stuff on the iPad. After a few minutes she said "that language is foul, mind playing with headphone?" So I did. Problem solved.

Need for Speed Rivals is pretty good if you like arcade racers and I think the Game of the Year edition is on sale on the PSN for $30 through today.

It's a big open world type racer in which you can drive around and take on various driving missions as a racer or as a cop. The handling it tight and the sense of speed is really good.

Thanks.  Sale must have ended yesterday, it's back up to $40 this morning.  Might still grab it anyways.

EDIT:  Looks like it is available on PC for $15.  Only catch is that you have to buy it through Origin (blech).

Heads up that Rivals in now on sale for $12.00 on PSN. I'll probably grab it at that price.

Pretty easy, just get one of these and swap the drive with the PS4 drive.

Personal preference. Performance wise the two systems are close so it depends on what games you want to play. And that's a personal choice. For example YK likes the XB1 exclusives better where I have no interest in any of them and enjoyed three PS4 exclusives this year alone.

Short answer: up to you.

My game(s) of the year are Infamous: Second Son and Diablo 3, both for PS4. Infamous because it's the only game I finished this year which is saying a lot since when it came out we had a 3 month old in the house and limited time. Diablo 3 because even though I put 100 hours into the PC version the console version still felt fresh and new and I have put almost the same amount of time into this one as well.

Honourable mentions:

GTA V - falls just short because it came out later in the year and I'm barely past the point I got to on the 360 version before I stopped playing it. So I haven't seen anything "new" to me yet, although the first person mode and revamped graphics are amazing

The Last of Us - I really liked this game but not as much as I thought I would. I found it overly difficult mostly because I don't have the patience to crawl around with limited ammo avoiding zombies. I'm more of a run and gun guy. I still plan on finishing this though.

Dissapointments:

NHL 15 - I find the gameplay to be the best in the series, but the lack of game modes and the removal of key features (unable to skip shifts you're not playing in Be A Pro, for example) is inexcusable. No season mode means I have to play Franchise GM mode if I want any semblance of a continuous season, and I hate this mode.

FIFA 15 - I'm in the minority but I liked 14 so much better. The graphics for 15 are a huge step up but I find the gameplay has suffered. It's basically a pace-fest now with everyone spamming their speedy guys through defenders with abandon. It's back to more Ping-Pong style soccer which I though they were getting away from with 14.

Bah, US and in-store only. I have a US address in Niagara Falls that I ship to when I want to order from US sites but that requires me to be able purchase and/or sign up online. For example if US Best Buy or Amazon has a crazy deal on something I'll buy it from there and ship it to Niagara Falls and then drive the hour to pick it up rather than just waiting for a sale in Canada.

I'd say Red for Canada as that's perhaps the primary colour in the flag, and it's always a colour that comes up with talking about Canada.

Others I'd go for would be USA=Blue, Greenland=Green, Norway=Yellow, Russia=White

I second this, although my Canadian bias is showing. We're red, dammit!

I've been playing the SimCity Citybuilder for a couple of days now, and I can honestly say I don't even know where to go in order to pay real money for things. Maybe I just block it out because there is a zero percent chance I would ever spend money, but I can't say the IAP are in your face at all.

Is it fun? Is there a real game to it, or is it just another timer reset game?

It's nothing special. At its core I think it's FarmVille with pretty graphics, although I never played FarmVille, so that's more of a guess. There are disaster scenarios that unlock eventually. My playtime lends itself to small chunks spread out over the day, so I'll keep with it and see if there's actually a game here. I doubt it though.

Have you played Simpsons: Tapped Out? Is this SimCity game similar to that? Because my guilty pleasure is Tapped Out. I haven't spent a dime but I've put hours into it. I'm slightly ashamed.
40  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The end of a gaming era on: December 09, 2014, 07:43:16 PM
To me it's about exclusives and PS4's exclusives are head and shoulders better than what XB1 is offering, to my gaming tastes anyway. Infamous, MLB The Show, and The Last of Us were all fantastic. Uncharted is coming up next year. On the other side I have no interest in Halo or Dead Rising and while I hear Sunset Overdrive was good fun, it's not a game I'd hinge my system purchasing decision on.

Spec-wise, ya the PS4 is better but I'm not sure if it's going to mean all that much two or three years into this generation's life cycle. 90% of the games I want are available on both and the ones that aren't I am more interested in the Sony versions, thus I own a PS4. Which is still strange for me to say since I was a big 360 guy and had zero interest in the PS4 last generation.
