3  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Is Gamingtrend dying, or we are all just on a break? on: January 23, 2013, 04:28:00 PM
I have to admit that these forums used to be a daily stop for me but now I'm checking in maybe once a week. A big reason is that my gaming has dwindled to almost nothing. I basically play the latest NHL, CoD, or Assassin's Creed, and that's it. Every time I think about diving into a big complex RPG I look at my 2.5 year old running around the house and realize I'll NEVER have the time to get properly involved in something like that for a long, long time. So I've distanced myself from the gaming community a bit only because my interest has dropped off dramatically. I have no interest in reviews, top 10 charts, previews, etc because 95% of the stuff I'll never play.

But I still come to this forum and OO because I really like the people that participate in these communities. But I'm more interested in the Non-Gaming discussions. And GamingTrend's Off Topic forum is basically a movie and TV show forum. OO has more varied Non-Gaming topics to discuss so I find myself there more often these days. This is still my go-to place for Gaming discussions but I find I have less use for them now then before.

Nothing against this site at all quality-wise because it looks like there's a lot of hard work being spent on it. I'm just no longer the target audience. But I don't think my situation is unique and a lot of the "Originals" from the CG and GG days are finding less and less time for gaming. So we're posting less. Which causes a downward spiral in forum activity.

I'm not sure there is a solution at this point. Time moves on. C'est la vie and all that.

+1  It is just a silly witch hunt.  I can't see any practical value to it.

If 100% of the racers are doping, doesn't that make it an even playing field and Lance still the winner?

That seems like a logical argument.

No because apparently doping affect different people differently. Some people get more of a benefit from it than others. I saw this in an article that I can't find now but if I can dig it up I'll post a link.

I started playing this again too after watching Dark Knight Rises. I still find the learning curve a little steep as they drop you into a huge city with most of your abilities and gadgets unlocked. And it's a little unfocused in that I'm really not sure what I should be doing next some of the time.

So far I like Arkham Asylum better but I'm not far enough into Arkham City to make a definitive statement.

11  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Aurora and gun control on: July 23, 2012, 12:25:06 AM
It's culture. The idea that if I watch a movie in a theatre in the US and can expect a certain number of patrons to be carrying a gun scares the shit out of me. Being from Canada, where you can't really do that legally makes that situation feel so foreign to me.

I don't know anyone, and I mean anyone, personally that owns a handgun. A couple of hunting rifles, yes, but not a handgun.

It's the culture I grew up in and that's why the US culture of gun ownership is kinda scary to me.

Likewise, it is why any form of gun control will never work in the US. It's too ingrained culturally that you need your guns for protection.

Just got my marathon pass (non-IMAX only here in Canada). Looks like the shows in Canada start at 6:40, not like you guys in the US that start at 6:00. Which means less break in between movies for us since they both start DKR at 12:01. Pussies. slywink

I'm surprised to say I liked this better than Spider-Man 1 or 3 but it doesn't come close the the awesomeness of Spider-Man 2.

Good reboot, even if it was unnecessary. Looking forward to a sequel.

Wouldn't the white out work better if the team they are backing was also wearing white??

Back before the NHL fucked it up, the home team always wore white.  The tradition came from that.

Ah I didn't know that.  I always wondered why the NHL was backwards that way.  Although I guess the NFL wears colors at home.

Ya, it used to be Home = white and Away = whatever colour from the rainbow the visiting team is. Which was one of the best parts of going to a game live in that every game you would see different bright coloured jerseys. Now it's always "Your team colour" vs. white. When I go to a Leafs game it's Blue vs White. Every time. It sucks.

Apparently the change was made when 3rd jerseys became popular and most of them were non-white. Instead of making the visiting team wear white once in a while when the home team wanted to use their 3rds, they changed the whole thing up.

It's a small thing, but it sucks, makes me a bit more angry than it should, and still actually confuses me once in a while when I turn on a game at random.

Just got booted, beta is over. Good fun while it lasted.

I had two CTDs while playing but otherwise no other issues. Played just the barbarian and had a ton of fun.

It's going to be a long three weeks.

To unlock the tournaments you have to beat the individual levels that are in the tournaments first.

Halladay left the Blue Jays because he wanted a chance to win a World Series. I now wonder that if this year he would have a better chance pitching in the Jays rotation with their bats behind him than with the Phillies.

In other words, come back Roy, we miss you.

@kronovan

I'm not surprised that the Leafs are the most hated team in Canada. They are everywhere on TSN and CBC. Even I get annoyed sometimes and I'm a fan. But they aren't in the playoffs and it's between Vancouver and Ottawa to be "Canada's Team" and it definitely isn't Vancouver.

Anyways, the point wasn't to sling mud, I just found the twitter post funny, especially coming from an official team account.

And yes, I'm back and will try to post more often. Hopefully insightful stuff from time to time too. My previous job blocked this site from work but I was laid off a couple of weeks ago so no longer have that problem.   icon_cool

And I think Burke has been a disaster. But I won't de-rail this thread with Leafs talk. This is a place for people with good teams to enjoy the playoffs. I'll have plenty to say about the Leafs in an off-season thread.  icon_wink

The LA Kings will be my team to root for this year since my Leafs suck.

Two reasons:

1) The jerseys. My god, the jerseys rule.

2) They allow their Twitter guy to post this to their official twitter page:

To everyone in Canada outside of BC, you're welcome.

Pillars of the Earth is one of my favourite books of all time. Read it. The sequel is pretty good too.

If you like time travel Blackout and All Clear by Connie Willis are great. Beware it is one story broken into two books and the first book doesn't really have a self-contained conclusion. I found the last quarter of book 1 and the first quarter of book 2 dragged a bit, but the payoff at the end was great.
