To me, I like a little of both, but in different circumstances. For instance, sometimes I'll be looking for info, and don't necessarily want to look at a video. I'll want more of a digest that can be glanced at,  that I can get the finer points from. And then, if a game does interest me, then I go out of my way looking for videos, most of the time being gameplay videos by some of Youtube's personalities. But almost never big sites like Gamespot, which seem to almost always veer too much towards being too basic. Sometimes these Youtube personalities tend to be more honest about what is and what isn't. So, I think there's a place for both, but like JayDee, I do like to have an option. Write a nice enough description that entices me to want to watch a video though, and you'll be golden. But if the video is the only thing on the page content-wise, then I'm likely to just hit the back button.

You nailed it. If you want to have a video then have it embedded within an article that summarizes what's in the video. Previewing a new game? Then how about a brief article outlining some features, initial impressions and other assorted info and have the video "personality" available on the same page. If I like what I see I'm going to click on the video to see the game in action and hear what you have to say in more detail. But if it's just a headline saying "NEW GAME PREVIEW!!!" with a video underneath and no other context, nope, no thanks I'm moving on. I'm not watching a 15-30 second ad and then sitting through a minute or two of video to determine I'm not really interested when a paragraph of text can tell me in seconds if I want more info.
5  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Dear Gamespot, Stop Trying to Make Me Care about Your Host Personalities on: July 13, 2015, 01:27:12 PM
The #1 way to get me to leave your site? Make your information and content primarily available via videos. I have no interest in watching personalities talk about games. Give me a well-written preview or review anyday over embedded vidoes, thanks.
6  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4/XB1/PC] Batman: Arkham Knight (Rocksteady Returns) on: July 08, 2015, 02:38:36 PM
I'm liking this game much more than Arkham City. I found City too chaotic and unfocussed in terms of plot and all the things you could do in the world. I find AK to be much more straightforward and focused, even though it is open world, and the story really has it's hooks into me. And I don't hate the Batmobile, at all. In fact, it's my preferred method of getting around the city. I have no problems driving it and tank battles last a minute or less for me as I have no issues taking out the bad guys.

The Harley DLC is very short, but they were very clever with the way they translated Batman's moves and abilities on to her.

Which version are you playing? I looked in the PS4 store and saw the Scarecrow DLC but nothing about Harley. Is it Xbox only or Season Pass only?

9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4/XB1/PC] Batman: Arkham Knight (Rocksteady Returns) on: July 02, 2015, 01:16:52 PM
I am loving the game the more I play it. Just finished the Ace Chemicals sequence and man that was some of the most fun I've had on my PS4 in a long, long time. I'm even loving the Batmobile at the moment. So good. Want to play more.

One question I do have with the story though (I'm just past the chemical plant so no spoilers beyond that please).

Spoiler for Hiden:
Is Batman infected with Joker blood or is he just seeing Joker because he's infected with Scarecrow gas? The sequence in the power plant with Joker was a little confusing to me because my wife was asking me a couple of questions and I missed a couple lines of dialog.

I completely forgot the guys with the red squiggles over their head need to be vaulted and not just countered normally. I only eventually remembered because I played the previous games. As of now the game itself hasn't told me how to handle them and I've faced a dozen or so at least. If I was new to the series I'd be so frustrated.

It's definitely a Rocksteady game in that I'm about an hour in and I have no idea what I'm doing or how the controls really work. I find the learning curve on these games to be high but once I settle in and figure things out it's a blast to play.
13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4/XB1/PC] Batman: Arkham Knight (Rocksteady Returns) on: June 24, 2015, 12:24:43 PM
Would have loved to play last night but the PS4 digital download was *craaaawwwwwwllllliiiiinnnnngggg* and said it was going to take 14 hours to download. The downside of going digital is the wait, the upside is once it's done I don't have put the disc in to play.

Any of you guys playing with quick counts on?  I am and I do like it because I can get through games quicker but it seems that my pitchers pitch count hits the 90ís by the 5th-6th inning.  Just wondering.

I'm using quick counts and I have a love-hate relationship with it. I love it because with two young kids my gaming time is extremely limited and I can get through a couple of games in an hour with quick counts on. It also does a reasonably good job of mixing things up so I'm forced to deal with a variety of hitter's counts or pitcher's counts, etc.

I also don't like it because it sometimes puts me in situations where it's hard to succeed. Bases loaded, 2 out, and my next hitter starts at 3-2. That sucks. Bases loaded, 2 out, and my pitcher starts the next batter off at 3-0. That's tough, too. But the worst is if I'm down by a run late and get a speedster on first and my next batter starts with two strikes thereby preventing me from bunting him to scoring position. In general, I hit worse with quick counts because otherwise I would always take the first pitch and get my "eye" in early in the count to get a feel for the timing and try work a hitters count. Can't really work the count very well in quick counts. The flip side is that pitching can be easier because you can be stuck in a bad situation but have the next batter start out with two strikes, so you're one pitch away from getting out of a jam. But these less than ideal situations aren't that common so I just deal with them because the positives outweigh the negatives for my particular gaming situation. Without quick counts I would get through maybe three weeks of a season before the next version of the game came out.
15  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: MLB The Show 15 .... 10 Year Anniversary on: April 27, 2015, 01:35:19 PM
I was having a really tough time hitting and was striking out 10+ times per game and couldn't figure out why. I couldn't get my Dynamic Difficulty above Rookie which was insulting because I was an All-Star level hitter last year. Then I read that turning off Guess Pitch helps because while guessing correctly is a huge boost, it also hampers your ability to make good contact when you swing at a pitch you didn't guess correctly. I didn't know that, I thought it just gave you a boost and had no negative side effects otherwise.

So I turned off the Guess Pitch feature and just started looking for pitches in certain locations myself, using directional hitting to help square up a pitch in hitters counts. And in the last three games I've got 10+ hits and scored 6+ runs and improved my hitting difficulty from Rookie to Veteran, and am already making progress towards the next step up.  I should hit my sweet spot for difficulty soon.

Dynamic Difficulty is still the best feature that anyone has ever incorporated into a sports video game, by the way.

PS4. I haven't played the PS3 version so I can't comment on how much they upgraded over last year's.
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: MLB The Show 15 .... 10 Year Anniversary on: April 06, 2015, 01:17:07 PM
This year's version is a huge upgrade from 2014. The graphics are some of the best I've seen on the console and they managed to pull them off without the frame-rate hiccups that plagued last year's version. The gameplay is so much improved. Fielding is actually a ton of fun now. There are a ton of variety in how balls come off the bat. You can really work the count and force walks. Hitting against elite pitchers is very tough (as it should be) but you can light up middle relief scrubs if you're patient and wait for your pitch.

I'm going to be putting a lot of time into this game.

I played a bit last night and it's unbelievably good. A giant step forward from last year's version.

Video game ratings are irrelevant to me. I couldn't even tell you what half of the games on my shelf are rated. If the gameplay is good and the story is decent I don't care how "mature" or how potty-mouthed the characters are.

You understand not everyone is the same age as you, right?

I do, but the question posed in the OP was "Do ratings matter to YOU". With an example about how KD will skip PG-13 horror movies because they aren't horror enough. So in that context, nope doesn't matter to me. My kids are too young to play video games.

Maybe we're just too old for their shit? I know that the location by my house is always overrun with kids and teenagers not old enough to drive buying a ton of stuff. The location is such that it's the only place within walking distance to get video games. So unless parents are available to drive their kids to a wal mart or best buy the place is packed, especially after school hours.

So I ended up going with Shadows of Mordor. I read through the giant thread over on OO and watched some YouTube videos and the gameplay seems right up my alley. Also, with two little kids at home my gaming time is usually in 45 minute to hour long bursts and SoM seems to ideal for that type of situation. I haven't tried it yet as I had to wait for it to download last night but I hope to get a bit of time in tonight. I'm still going to try DA:I one day, but as was mentioned above it'll probably be cheaper in a few months when I'm ready to dive in. SoM should carry me over until The Show 15 comes out and then that game will eat up most of my time.

Thanks to everyone who offered their thoughts and opinions! They were helpful.
28  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Help me pick my next game on: February 17, 2015, 09:02:09 PM
I really want to get DA: I if only because I want to get involved in a big, deep RPG. But there is no guarantee I'm going to like it since it's been years since I've played a tactical RPG. SoM, however, is right up my alley. I really like Action RPGs. So I *should* get that to stay in my comfort zone, right? But I've heard such good things about DA: I. I want to experience that joy too!!!!

I've ruled out the shooters as I just realized I still have BF4 left unplayed from the last sale. So that will have to scratch my FPS itch for now.

Decisions, decisions.

PSN is having a big sale this week on a lot of good stuff. I'm going to buy one game, just not sure which one. I'm picking one from the list below. Which do you guys recommend? I'm leaning towards either Shadow of Mordor or Dragon Age but can be persuaded otherwise. I like shooters, 3rd person games like AssCreed and Last of Us, and have dabbled in the occasional RPG but wouldn't mind getting into one (not sure if DA:I is the place to start though).

NOTE: prices are in CDN $ so subtract a few $$$ to get the US equivalent. Should also be noted that full retail price for games here in Canada are $69.99.

Dragon Age : Inquisition - $42
Shadow of Mordor - $35
Wolfenstein - $24
Far Cry 4 - $42
Call of Duty: AW - $46

This is a weak month for me. After First Light last month I was hoping we'd get some more AAA content. Hell, I'd take Knack at this point. Disappointed that it's only the PS3 Thief and not the PS4 version.

Overall, in my 13 months with PS+ I have been very underwhelmed with the PS4 offerings.

I'm a stupid sucker for city building Freemium games and I hate myself a bit for it. First it was the Simpsons: Tapped Out, now it's SimCity: BuildIt. I never spend a dime on these games because I have the patience of a saint, but they scratch that 10 minute gaming itch each night while I queue up resources and build more things and I have fun watching my little cities grow bigger over time.

I wouldn't call it "hiding" those games from your wife, I'd say it's more selecting your audience.

Would you watch The Expendables or Game of Thrones with your wife?  Or would you more likely wait for a night/weekend she's not around and watch it then?

I started playing GTA V while my wife sat on the couch doing stuff on the iPad. After a few minutes she said "that language is foul, mind playing with headphone?" So I did. Problem solved.

Need for Speed Rivals is pretty good if you like arcade racers and I think the Game of the Year edition is on sale on the PSN for $30 through today.

It's a big open world type racer in which you can drive around and take on various driving missions as a racer or as a cop. The handling it tight and the sense of speed is really good.

Thanks.  Sale must have ended yesterday, it's back up to $40 this morning.  Might still grab it anyways.

EDIT:  Looks like it is available on PC for $15.  Only catch is that you have to buy it through Origin (blech).

Heads up that Rivals in now on sale for $12.00 on PSN. I'll probably grab it at that price.

Pretty easy, just get one of these and swap the drive with the PS4 drive.
