I loved Ender's Game and I read the 3 follow-ups and Ender's Shadow.  IMHO, none of them were near as good as EG.  Ender's Shadow was a fun read, but the others just left me scratching my head.  They were just...weird...and heavy on religion...weird religion.  The one with the girl with the OCD I thought was actually bad whereas the others at least had some entertaining chunks.

So you're saying it's probably good, then?  icon_twisted

When I first played it I was mostly disappointed.  But after playing the demo a few times it became apparent that it was they type of game that wasn't a button mash and required learning the controls.  Once I did so the demo became immensely entertaining to replay figuring out new ways to deal with each encounter.  Certainly, the full game might not be perfect, but I also discount Star Wars reviews these days due to the popularity of bashing the property (not undeserved in some cases, but still not outside the tar-and-feather mentality).

Yes, my avatar naturally suggests that I'm a Lucas apologist...but I also think the prequels were crap.

What a d-bag.  Over the past 15-years they have turned in to exactly opposite what I though they stood for so many years ago.  In the end James and Lars turned out to be huge sell-outs.  They used to be the last bastion of the heavy-metal side of my youth that I could listen to these days.  But after living in Marin and dealing with James' douche-baggery I am finally done with them.  I'm sure they could give a sh*t less from atop their Paris Hilton sized piles of money, though.   disgust

87  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Tattoo Thread on: August 29, 2008, 05:38:06 PM
When I was 19 I drove an acquaintance when he was getting a tattoo.  Naturally, being young, dumb and full of c*m, I walked out with one for myself. No thought put into it besides, "this'll be cool."  I've found that while I don't regret having a tattoo, unsurprisingly I've never really cared for the one I've had.  I spent a long time trying to figure out what I could do with it and in a bout of frustration started having part of it removed last year.

But after recent life altering events I've come to the conclusion that I'd really like to have it covered up with something meaningful.  I found an amazing local artist and set up a series of appointments with him.  Unfortunately he's booked for 5 months in advance so, barring any cancellations, I won't be able to get in until late January.  Ugh.  But after seeing his work I'm willing to wait to get what I want this time around.

I will make it a point to return to this thread and post pics of my progress.

Thanks to everyone for posting as I always enjoy seeing them.

In the PSP version there is a speed play option that cuts out the animations before and after shots.   Is this in the 360 or PS3 versions?   I hate hitting 'A' three times for each shot.

Another request for an answer to this one.  As silly as it sounds I actually gave up playing/buying this game because of these unskippable animations.

I've been using Vista now for the past 5 months as my main OS.  It's true the driver annoyances at the start were off putting.  But at this point it is a really great and slick OS.  In fact I've even switched back from OS X and boot to it by default on my MacBook Pro.  Outside of GarageBand there is no reason for me to go back to the headache of permission issues and option barren software in OS X.  And there certainly is no reason for me to use XP anymore, either.

The article Laner linked to above is an excellent summary of the woes and "Howard Dean-ing" Vista has gone through.

It certainly looks nice, but it's basically Dragon's Lair gameplay?  That makes sense that they can up the graphics level if they've minimized the interaction.  That said, this is the first I've heard of it and all I know I just gleened from that trailer.

I'm interested in PS3 stuff because I might be picking up a unit as a Blu-Ray player this Fall if they drop the price.

Just came back from seeing it with my kids and had a good time. I really do love the art style as they basically took the style from the Clone Wars cartoon series and put it in a 3D model environment.  No problems with baby Hutt, but I will admit that hearing a Truman Capote-eqsue gay Hutt was a bit odd.  At least he was interesting with his dayglo-colored rave makeup on.  Maybe it helps that I really love the period of the Clone Wars a great deal.  Anyway, I am not a harsh critic of movies at all and so I enjoyed it, which is all I want when I go to the movies.

I took my son and two nephews to see this on Saturday. I agree with everything you said.  I enjoyed the movie but Zero the Hutt was way out of place. Very strange character.

+1  Saw it with my family this weekend and it was entertaining.  Certainly not great, but it delivered what I expected.  I think the reviews are far too harsh and probably just the result of the ever so trendy George Lucas bashing (of which I am sometimes guilty as well).  I knew it was basically 3 episodes of a TV show turned in to a movie and that's what it felt like.

My biggest gripe was the horrible character animation.  Everyone was stiff and it seemed like they didn't have time to finish the 'tweening work.  The robots seemed okay, but the problem is that the humans move just like them.

As for the art style, I think it works much better in a 2D medium, but it was passable in 3D.  I longed to see this movie in the style of the previous shorts.

And I think he's a dud of an actor, personally.

I'll split the difference here.  I think he's very good at playing the silent, weird types but nothing noteworthy overall.  In fact I find Maggie to be a much more diverse actor.  I am completely ambivalent to him playing this role as the chances of a video game movie being good are slim to none anyway.

102  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XBLA] Braid on: August 10, 2008, 09:19:20 PM
I am absolutely loving this gem.  It's takes a very unique experience for me to get in to platformers these days but Braid definitely has it.

I feel it probably should have been 800 points, but I've certainly enjoyed the game so far and don't have regrets about the price.  I only have 4 or 5 more puzzle pieces to snag.  I'm tempted to look up a hint for the "Hunt" level on World 3 as I just can't seem to wrap my head around it.  But then again I'm down to the last few and don't want to shorten an already bite sized game.

I'll have to look up those stars as I had no idea about them.

Microsoft can get away with charging for Xbox Live because it's a damned good service and an awesome value. The market has proven this already. That market is not going to change unless PS3 or Wii can somehow pull a magical service out of their ass that provides that same value for no cost. Their current offerings ain't it.

Exactly.  It's a great service and worth every measly little penny I pay for it each year.  It is an excellent service that currently cannot be matched on any other platform...yes, even on my once beloved PC.

The more I play this game the more I agree with everyone here.  It's not a replacement for Civ4, but very nicely done nonetheless.  I hate to bring the King Kong of subjective language out, but I have "fun" when I play it.

It does move very quickly through the ages so I really can't comment on how I feel about it yet.  Diplomacy seems to boil down to other civs demanding tech or money from you and declaring war if you refuse.  As I start out I know that I need to prepare a good defensive front as at least one civ will be at nigh constant war with me.

Bottom line is that it is a great starting point and I hope that it sells well so that we see sequels down the line with some tweaks and a little more depth added in.

I'm on my third game right now on the 360 and I think they did a really great job with it.  Sure,  its fast paced, but I like it as a reasonably quick alternative to Civ IV. It is a little weird at times because they've brought back some concepts from Civ II(Leonardo's Workshop, for one), but I like it. I imagine I'll play the heck out of it this summer and then probably return to Civ IV at some point.

A big, fat, huge +1.  I've played a couple games and it's great.  They did a fantastic job of streamlining it for the console.  Now I can Civ (yes it's a verb) on my couch with a six pack and bring the nuke hammer down on anyone ignorant enough to cross my path.  icon_twisted
