Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Thinking of buying an Apple computer

But Virus writers like attention. What better way to get attention than to write a virus for, by far, the most prolific OS out there. If Macs and PCs were flipped in ratio I still say we'd be see a dramatic increase in attacks aimed at Macs, don't you think?. Same sh*t different flies, IMHO. Macs have built a very impressive and strong fort, but the seige against it is nigh negligible compared to the armies of pasty-skinned, living-in-Mom's-basement, pissed-at-life nerds arrayed against the Windows fort.* Microsoft has definitely made some bumbling mistakes along the way (ignoring the internet, ahem), but all of their dirty laundry gets aired (and rightfully) in the public eye because of their dominance. Apple has had the not-necessarily wanted luxury of being able to watch and learn without being exposed. Of course a lot of this is educated speculation, and Macs are more secure. But for many reasons, not just the OS. I've been watching the History Channel if you can't tell.

Just wait until they can advertise underwear in your dreams! Leela: Didn't you have ads in the 20th century? Fry: Well sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio. And in magazines. And movies. And at ball games and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts and written on the sky. But not in dreams. No siree!

Mine is currently being boxed up. That was fast! I had to call yesterday because the website somehow dropped my wireless option. They were so swamped with orders that I was on the phone (to India) for 3 hours. It sucked, but now I understand why. What a great deal!

Capitalism ate my baby!
Advertising in some games fits, well, at least by the standards of ubiquitous ads in everyday life. Sports games are what comes to mind first. But I have been wondering when they were going to figure out a way to stream ads dynamically in to our games. Obviously MMOGs are prime for this type of revenue stream.

Subject: How to possibly survive a heart attack when you are alone.
> A prominent cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it > to 10 people you can bet that we'll save at least one life. Read > this... It could save your life!! > Let's say it's 6:15 PM and you're driving home (alone of course), > after an unusually hard day on the job. You're really tired, upset and > frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest > that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You > are only about five k's from the hospital nearest your home. > Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. > You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did > not tell you how to perform it on yourself. > > HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE > > Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, > the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel > faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these > victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very > vigorously. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds > without letup until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating > normally again. > Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the > heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also > helps it regain normal rhythm. > In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many > other people as possible about this. I find the PC vs. Mac stuff pretty amusing. Personally I could care less except that I develop Windows apps using Visual Studio .NET. So my life has to have Windows machines in it. My brother has Macs (artist) and I like messing around on them whenever I'm at his place. Nice machines. IF something came along that led me to develop for Macs I wouldn't hesistate at all.
It strikes me odd that people get upset about Microsoft's control over the software when Apple controls both the software and the hardware. Considering my job I'm all for stability and would love to see more consolidation and standards in the PC market. I guess the X-Box, while obviously a very specific use computer, is somewhat similar to the Mac biz philosophy.
I remember when I bought an iPod for my gf at an Apple store the clerk actually got pissy with me when I told him we were going to use it with Windows. But there are plenty of elitists in any group. I still cringe at those uber-nerds in the back of my computer classes who would get in to chest thumping constests over code.
Oh yeah, go for it! Macs are nice.

We have both P.F. Chang's and Pei Wei around here. I find both to be pretty meh food. Not good, not terrible, just unremarkable. I call it pop food as it follows the same format as pop music and pop movies: try be as unoffensive to as many people as possible. Most of the clients remind me of the Starbucks couple from Best in Show. That lettuce wrap chicken is chopped up so small that it's probably beaks and claws anyway.

Sounds great. Especially the want-list part. Cross-referencing the available with the wants and you could display who all has a game available immediately and perhaps an option to e-mail that person as well. But be careful, if you build it, the asshats will come.

Ok, the pic of the guy was in here (and his near-death friend) and now it's a link to felatio? Hmm, crazy CGers. Bad taste is one of those qualities that trascends ethnic boundaries. Why someone would do this to a nice looking car and think it looks good is beyond my current level of brain damaged comprehension. You can use this to show your children the evils of too much Need for Speed Underground.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / So how was everyone's weekend?

I had pretty good one. Friday: -My birthday! Met about 20 of my friends at Flying Saucer for drinks. Around 11 we mosied across the street to a place that serves shots. Thus begins the only bad part. I was fed so many in a row, and had enough beers not to turn them down, that I blanked out for about 3 hours. I never do that and always regulate my drinking! But apparently I was very entertaining as I danced for everyone. Saturday: -no hangover! -wake up to find my bud had dropped off Burnout 3 for my gift! -watched some college ball -went to a 1 yr olds b-day party -saw Team America (f*ck yeah!) -brain still rebooting from Friday so I went to bed early Sunday: -Cowboys lost -Cardinals lost -Red Sox win -cleaned my place -went to BB and picked up Midway Treasures Vol. 2 and Ren & Stimpy -watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (great flick!)

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What compelled you to go Console?
|

I had an Odyssey2 and a NES but became an exclusive PC gamer until I picked up an N64. Since then I've owned a PS2 for about a year and a GC for about 6 months until I settled on the X-Box. I just didn't have the time and money to play all 3 consoles and I enjoyed the X-Box the most. Over the past 3 or 4 years my PC gaming has declined to the point where nowadays I even like playing FPS games on a console. The couch, 5.1 surround and large TV are great. But the main reason is that I work on a computer all day long, all week long and I just don't want to go upstairs and sit in my office in front of one at night anymore. I still love the PC for the strategy and RPG games, but I would say that these days I pretty much a console gamer.

I'll be collecting all your man cards at the door. I like a couple of them every now and then, but I don't get all hard core about it like you guys. Amelie is really such a different movie that I'd put it much more art house than chick-flick. But perhaps I'm just making excuses. I liked Love Actually, When Harry Met Sally and Princess Bride (hey, if Amelie qualifies then so does this movie).

Wow, that looks so great. It has the horizontal configuration of the orignal GBA so it won't actually cause me to have pain in my hands anymore. If the battery life is acceptable and the word-of-mouth is good then I'll be picking one up shortly after launch.

Last night reminded me of why I played nothing but PGR2 for about a month straight. Lots of fun. Especially playing with the gang. I'm going to download those packs before the next session. My birthday is this weekend and I know I'm getting Burnout 3 so I can hook up with you all on that one too.

Please, please don't let this one suck. Please. Ditto. I'm probably setting myself up for disappointment again, but I can't help but be excited. I want a movie that I can actually watch instead of just popping in for a few action scenes.
