81  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What are you buying this week? on: September 26, 2005, 06:41:41 PM
Just played Xbox version of TW06.  Its much better than 05.  The putting requires that you actually look at the lie now (not guess where the caddy tells you.)  THere are also some better multiplayer modes like a target type competition.  THe HUD is improved as well.

I have never heard of this game...  reading about it, is it like an RPG with Morrowind like freedom, or what? :?:

Its kind of like a turn-based top-down ELITE.  With an optional RTS ground battle dealy.

I love the way they set up the turn-based system BTW.

Nobunaga's Ambition
Space Hulk
Star Control II
Star Flight II
TIE Fighter
Wing Commander III

Shogun: Total War on the R:TW engine.
I'd love to see X-Com with a graphical overhaul.

Semaj, I love the idea of a new Baseball Stars!  Don't even care about the MLB license since the game was all about making the team and players!  Another NES baseball game I loved was Dusty Diamond All-Star Softball.

I'm sure there are more (Dune II, which was already done -- do it again!).  Desert Commander on the NES...  A Boy and His Blob...

I know this is like from forever ago....  BUT:

Nobunaga's Ambition = ROTTK in Japan

And ROTTK is on Version 10....
Released in 2005

Ironic seeing this post... I just fired up X-Com on the dos emulator dosbox last week (i think thats what its called)  And have been playing all the way through.  I don' t know if any of you recall an article in CGW recently that stated that old games aren't as fun now as they were when they were new... What a bunch of HOOEY!  Xcom (for me at least) is still just as engaging and fun even with the old graphics engine.

In fact it was that article that made me try it out to see if he was right.  Thank god he was wrong! smile

Likewise, turn based games have their own strangeness to them that I find odd, especially apparent in RPGs like Fallout.

Man everyone has an opinion.  No one is right.

Die hard/Old School Fans of Fallout just want the same engine and mechanincs with a new story with maybe some added weapons, characters, perks etc. etc.

It seems that new(er?) fans of Fallout like the atmosphere of Fallout (post-apoc environment) but want the newer "trendy" type engines (FPS, RTS, MMORPGs)

Me, I'm one of the former.  I would love them to keep the "engine" relatively the same and add new content.  I don't see why they can't do what they did with Fallout:BOS...  Provide both types of combat (RT and TB).

For those of you that want a MMORPG:  How do you preserve the environment of Fallout if everyone is a hero?  A license like Mad Max would probably make much more sense and give you the atmosphere you want.  (also make sure everyone looking for something like this looks at Auto Assault)

Personally, I doubt us diehards will ever see another "licensed" Fallout like the first two.  The new game will probably be "real-time" and "first-person."  But thats just speculation.  In reality, none of us knows what Bethsoft is going to do.  But from all the interviews I've read, the team doing the development is well aware of what made the original Fallouts great.

In the end, I think that the die hards get pissed off because if the great name of Fallout becomes tainted (much like Master of Orion 3 tainted the MOO series), then we have just lost another great franchise to history in our long career of playing great games.  Most of us (probably) feel like the direction of games in general now is way off course.  You can usually identify a die hard by them constantly repeating, "They just don't make 'em like they used to."

I won't be totally disappointed if Fallout 3 isn't like 1 or 2.  As long as its good and still has some of the elements of the originals I'll be happy. smile

I've had to get used to things changing in the gaming world.  These kids just don't like the stuff I liked as a kid. slywink

Here's to hoping for Fallout 3!  Make it great Bethsoft!

If this is the case it is Extremely unfortunate.  I can't live without my Fallouts, Master of orions, civilizations, X-coms, star controls and X2s.

Sports games like ESPN FOOTBALL, SSX, Tony Hawk, Basketball, Winning Eleven, Golf are generally better for the console market

Do you think some of their popularity on consoles is due to the genre more than anything else? Meaning, you watch football on TV, so therefore playing it on TV fits better than playing it on a computer. While I do not own a sports title for my PC, it would seem like if enough time was spent developing it, it could be more fun using keyboard and mouse (kind of RTSish). Wouldn't it be cool if you could actually mouse-click where your quarterback is going to throw the ball? Seems like it would be neat to me ~shrug~. But, I just do not think the "target" audience for football games have PCs, hence thats why sports games tend to be on consoles, not because they play better.

Hmmm..  I am a big PC guy.  I like consoles too.  But I can tell you because of the way these sports games are made (maybe if they changed how the games was playted) reaction times and control layout is highly important.  So if someone was going to play them on a PC they would probably have a gamepad.  So why not just have it on the console.  Plus Sports games are great side-by-side multiplayer games.  PCs can do LAN or internet well.  but consoles do four guys on the couch well. smile

You can still play ANY and ALL of the GBA games on your Cube, on your TV, get a gameboy player for the Cube, and have at you 2d gaming glory!

I KNEW someone was going to say that. slywink ->

Yeah I've got one.... And thats not a bad deal except that it actually goes backwards as far as graphics and sound quality as compared to say... the PS one.  Which is where Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is.  But you've got a bit of a point.  I would just like the use of the CUBE hardware.  Besides you know what I'm REALLY talking about here. I think AGTFOX is probably the closest to target here except that I think Viewtiful Joe did pretty well didn't it?  I mean its not old school Metroid or Castlevania but its 2D right?

Its too bad the big boys own rights to the good stuff.  We need some Indie developer to help us out in this arena.

Oh well, its not like I can do anything about it except buy good 2D games for consoles.
107  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / A watershed moment for PC Gamers on: May 19, 2005, 08:15:15 PM
Different game types excel on different platforms.  For example:

Big time strategy games (turn based or RTS) like heroes of might and magic, master of orion, x-com, wargames, starcraft, civilization etc. fit great for the armchair general and his/her PC.

Story, menu driven and relatively light RPGs like final fantasy go great on Consoles.

In depth RPGs like any of the gold box games, wizardry, might and magic, planescape, temple of elemental evil fit well on the PC.  (especially anything that can be MODDED)

Sports games like ESPN FOOTBALL, SSX, Tony Hawk, Basketball, Winning Eleven, Golf are generally better for the console market.

Simulations like Freespace, X2, B-17, Elite, Silent Hunter, Privateer, X-wing vs Tie Fighter fit much better in the PC realm.

Fighting games like Killer Instinct, Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, Samurai Showdown and Tekken fit better on the Consoles.

Right now, highly competitive FPS is better on the PCs because of the quick controls most FPSers are used to (also with hi competeition mice like the Razer Diamondback)
(I still cant understand how people can like using a Control Pad in FPSes!)

The list goes on.  Of course as Consoles become more capable of using PC type input devices like mice and keyboards and become more internet capable then some of this becomes less relevant and consoles will work better.

We will eventually end up with game dedicated machines that are both console-like and PC-like.  It'll be a PConsole. smile

[rant]

I suppose the days of great platformers for next gen systems are about dead.  Except for the Viewtiful Joe series all the other greats have gone to 3D pot.  Metroid is now a shell of its former self.  Castlevania is now a shell.  Rygar is a shell.  Blaster Master Turned into a shell a LONG time ago.

All the good platformers are on handhelds now ->  I will never play them. (edit: ok maybe a little bit slywink )  Why?  I have an Xbox, Gamecube and PS2.  Why would I seek out and play games on a handheld?  I don't travel much.

Why don't they take after viewtiful Joe?  I would love to see another 2D super graphics game like Symphony of the Night or old school metroid or old school ... you get the picture.  The new 3D games are NOTHING like the previous versions.  NOt even the Mario series (even though they got that one right)

So tell me whats wrong with doing a 2D platformer on a high-end system?  You can still make it with great graphics!  The soundtrack could be even better!

I'd buy the next gen Castlevania 2D platformer for $50... Would you?

(a new Einhander would be fantastic too biggrin)

-Romance of the Three Kingdoms series
-Winning Eleven (soccer) series

I should have pointed it out, but you do need the network adapter to connect the hard drive and not all hard drives fit the network adapter (Western Digital being the primary culprit that doesn't fit).  It's possible to jury rig something that will allow any drive to fit, but it's usually easier to use a Maxtor or Seagate or something.

Btw.  Even though it's practically impossible to explain why, the quote in your sig is the best in the movie.  That's saying something given the great one liners.

Roger that.  I've got the HD from FFXI and the Net adapter so I'm already all set.

I'm also sorry I can't help you.  In fact, I've been keeping an eye out for one myself.

Have you considered using Hd Loader?  It doesn't  work with the slimline PStwo and you do need a hard drive, but less risk of busting disks when you're not swapping them out all the time.  It's especially good for strategy games and games you play over and over.

Sorry, Jack, but I've had to remove the link to that site out of your post. While I've visited there myself in the past, that place is basically one step away from piracy.

Yes, it's nothing but old games that aren't available in stores anymore, but none of those games have truly been released into the public domain.

And yes, I know there are exceptions (X-Com, the older Grand Theft Auto titles, among a few others).

You're more than welcome to continue the discussion though. I for one loved some of my classic PC titles. Heck - I still own some of the ancient things (the first two Wing Commanders for example) for reasons I still can't explain.
