Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Old classics... Where to get besides EBAY?
|
on: November 22, 2005, 01:33:51 PM
|
Hey guys thanks for the tip. I too having been looking for this one on EBAY for some years now. Its been a "favorite" email search that I've had to renew but never get any hits on. Actually I do "know how to get a copy for emu" but as a collector I'm looking for the whole package. I'll do some looking around and see if I can't find some old school boards. I didn't even think of pawn shops or thrift stores! I'll check those out too.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Old classics... Where to get besides EBAY?
|
on: November 19, 2005, 02:43:44 PM
|
I've been looking for a while now, but I was wondering if anyone here knows where to buy old classics (besides EBAY). I'm particularly looking for The Eternal Dagger at the moment. I want the complete manual, disks etc. for whatever platform i can find. And I'd pay quite a bit for it. Problem is I haven't seen this on ebay EVER. Is there some shop for classics anyone knows about? I've been collecting stuff like this for a long time and would love to find a place that deals in this stuff. I'm thinking that someone here might have an idea or two?[/url]

I dont think using a nocd crack constitues piracy. I agree with you. I in fact like the idea of not having to have to put the CD in to play. Illegal or not. Obviosly that ability is extremely open to piracy. (and screw you if you call me a pirate cause I spend WAY TO MUCH on computer and video games each year than I should and I am no pirate!) Cool w/ me. I was talking to those that do specifically. I guess if I want to play a game, I'll buy it. Regardless of copy protection. I really tihnk that the "negatives" of starforce (especially the latest version, at least from what I've read) are blown way out of proportion. Come on, you know this statement is stupid, inflammatory and just plain wrong. Rolling Eyes for you. I know. I was emotional. (hence the "VENT" clause) Does Starforce = sales? Apparently, quite the contrary. What I was getting at was -> Starforce = Less piracy. And there is a TON of it. I've seen it first hand. As I'm sure everyone (<-uh-oh, another one) here has. Maybe publishers and middlemen are a bigger problem than piracy then. I don't think that they are a bigger problem but I think that they are definitely part of it. I still believe that piracy is the biggest killer to devs. You asked for them, you got them. :Twisted Evil: Hey, everyone gets a chance to VENT, right? True... True. Would you care to retract your bullshit statement now? No. Thats why I said, "(generalization, you know what I mean, you know who you are)". Because YOU DO KNOW WHO YOU ARE. I'm sorry but copy protection the the publishers problem. Is it? If people didn't pirate we wouldn't need copy protection. I would say that it is OUR (players) problem. Well I am suprized that the response hasn't been worse. Now that I've calmed down, my perspective is a little better. Thx for the vent GT.

IF I hear another complaint about starforce CD protection I'll *&^#&*! Starforce is great for s/w makers, period. Anyone (generalization, you know what I mean, you know who you are) who says otherwise is a pirate and steals others work. If STARFORCE doesn't work or breaks shit on your computer, thats starforce dev's fault. I'm sure that whoever decides to use starforce has been assured that starforce will not cause any problems on peoples machines. Its not like the dev is out to get your computer busted. If I was a developer needing some cash I'd be tempted to use it on my S/W. Last I checked STARFORCE was working fine. Poor devs, breaking their asses for pennies already with publishers and other middle*#&@s carving out profit. Okay got that out of the way. I can't wait to see all the  posts on me. But C'est La Vie. It seems that any new game that comes out with SF protect, there are 50 threads everywhere filled with people that say they won't buy the game. Pshaaa. Thats because you weren't going to buy it anyway. Does ANYONE agree with me? . . . Okay I'm ready for the flames now.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / What do you think of this setup?
|
on: November 05, 2005, 05:25:48 AM

Couple -o- terms first. DDR = Double Data Rate FSB = Front Side Bus So if your running 200Mhz FSB which is default for most moden CPU's you need DDR 400 memory. If your going to overclock by increasing the speed of the front side bus as high as 250Mhz you'd need atleast DDR 500 memory. A good place to check out would be the memory forum here http://www.ocforums.com/ -Tony I gotchya there. But in order to use the DDR don't you have to have two matched sticks? Or is that something else I'm thinking of. (note: I'm a CprE, I understand the terms but haven't kept up with the changes and where we are at tech-wise.) I guess I expected something more out of the MBs these days. It seems like we've been at PC3200 forever for standard stuff. And I needed a refresher. Thanks for the tips!

Does Civ IV have one of the best intro tunes ever... TWICE. One for the intro movie and one for the menu music. Every time I start the game I turn off the monitor and just listen. good stuff.

What about the memory type? 3200 seems pretty standard these days. But I've seen 3500 and other types, whats the best and fastest? If your not going to overclock PC3200 is all you'll need. The speed of the bus (200Mhz) defines how fast the memory runs and you'll gain nothing by running PC4000 memory, you might actually loose performance if the PC4000 cant run memory timings as tight as the PC3200 can. -Tony Hmmm.. Anyone have a real good resource where I can catch up on the new memory these days? It used to be easier. The number was a clock speed. What does it mean now? The motherboard spec for memory is: * Supports dual channel DDR 266/333/400, using four 184-pin DDR DIMMs. Doesn't that mean 400MHz Bus for RAM? I need to read up on this somewheres. I'll scour over at toms hardware for a bit i guess. (I'm sick of research. ) Wait a minute... PC3200 is 400 isn't it... It's all coming back to me...

Ok guys I'm about to click the ORDER button on this one. I'm an expert (or so I thought) on building my own PCs but a lot has changed in the last few years. Motherboards are everywhere, reviews are relatively vague and there are more CPUs out with multiple versions of the same thing! (I'm and AMD only guy BTW)
I've done some research and come up with this:
# MSI K8N NEO4 SLI: Audio/GigaLAN (939/ 4 DDR, 3 PCI, 2 PCIe X16, SATA, RAID, IEEE1394) # Athlon64 3500+ (939 / 2.2GHz / 640K / 2000FSB) # 1.0GB DDR Memory (PC3200/400MHz - 1x1GB) # Standard Mid-Tower Case with Power Supply (Silver/Black) # 450W Approved Power Supply # EVGA GeForce 7800GT # Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum (I'll never buy anything with the word 'Fata1ity' on it)
Any suggestions? I'm trying to save SOME money (hence the 3500+ over anything else due to giant price jump. X-Fi Plat vs X-Fi Elite, and GF7800GT vs GF7800GTX)
Anyone have opinions on X-Fi Plat vs X-Fi Elite, GF7800GT vs GF7800GTX. What about my memory selection? Whats the best memory I can get for this motherboard and what kind of performace increase does it involve? If anyone has an online reference for memory that would be sweet. I researched everything else so much I'm sick of it and don't want to look at memory. I figured someone on here would have an quick answer.
Also any opinions/suggestions/critical information on the above setup are welcome

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / IGN Civ IV review
|
on: October 23, 2005, 02:28:21 AM
|
LE is spot on. Have we not learned anything yet? IGN tells the gaming masses what they want to hear. If the game has sufficient hype and IGN perceives that gamers want it to be good, it'll get a 9+. Course there's always the editor's choice award to tack onto a game they just can't bring themselves to award with a 9+.
Does IGN care if a game is legitimately good? No. Can they even tell if it is? Doubtful. As long as the hits keep coming.
Pardon my cynicism, which, for the record, is not directed at anyone in particular, but let's all just be aware of reality here. We still don't really know if Civ 4 is great or not. Next week will clarify. Its Civilization... It is good.

So where is the best place to get one of these things? Looks like EB and GS do bundles only? And what about the HD? Is it just a standard IDE or SATA drive? If so is there a maximum drive size? I will probably just install my own HD into the thing (if its possible?)
I'd like to just pick up the basic system with maybe a few accessories NOT including the HD (because I'd like to install it myself) and NO games. Any internet farmers out there know what the deal is? Whats the best online resource for checking out prices and bundles/non-bundles for this thing?

X3: Reunion is gold. I've got mine on preorder so I get the nerdy T-SHIRT! YEAH!
Anyone else excited? Uhm, where did you hear that it went gold? As far as I know it's still in the middle of beta testing with no announced release date. Hmmm... Where did I hear that. I don't remember. The release date is set for 10/17/05 (according to online sellers) but we all know how accurate they are. I DID see that it went gold SOMEWHERE, maybe a bunch of BS though?

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / X3 Reunion: WHATS UP DUDE!
|
on: October 07, 2005, 07:53:37 PM

I really enjoyed X2, but given that previews of X3 written as recently as September 26th were still reporting major game-stopping bugs, I have some serious concerns about the new one. From PC.IGN.COM's 9/26/05 preview: More important than the ability to quickly move from barter to navigation menus is the ability to delegate disparate orders to members of a fleet spread across the breadth of the universe... But we didn't actually get to do any of that.
X3, you see, still needs a fair bit of work before it releases later this year on PC. Right now our current build didn't allow us to dig too deeply into any single component of the game. The interface freaked out constantly, functions seemed to spontaneously switch themselves up, and we even experienced very serious performance hiccups on the most ridiculously powerful machines.
Obviously these issues will have to be resolved before launch, but they were big enough to forbid us from really experiencing X3 in any significant detail, and since X3 is a game that must be experienced in depth to appreciate, we're kind of boned until a new build comes around. So please look for more info when we get the latest burn. Eleven days is an awfully short time to go from demonstrating a completely broken version of a game to sending that same game into production. I'll have to wait for reviews on this one...it's a shame because I had a ton of fun with the last one. -Autistic Angel Hmmm I hope they actually saw the game way earlier and didn't write the article until a month or two later. I hadn't seen that preview yet. My parade sees clouds.

LE is the "Voice of Doom" here. After a while, you get used to it as background noise or static. Am I? I post kindly about plenty of games. I just like to get creative with the shitty ones. It just really, really worries me that we can have a thread where we all sit down and the majority opinion comes out to be, man, Black and White (1) was a overrated disaster, not falling for that again! Then two weeks later Black and White 2 comes out and suddenly everyone's sniffing it over and reading IGN's review like it might be something other than bullshit and saying well the first level WAS kind of fun...I think this effect is some sort of mind screw. I REALLY think that most people really liked black and white 1 and its innovations. But somehow over time people were somehow more and more people were convinced that some minor problems were really large problems and that the game really sucked. I'm still sticking with: I loved B&W1 and am so far really liking B&W2. Its okay to like B&W1. REALLY! All of this is Just my OPINION of course. I just wish I could turn off the creatures thought bubble and WHEN IS THE MULTIPLAYER COMING?
