201  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Game Disucssion: Fable [Xbox] on: September 09, 2004, 07:08:00 PM

My problem with Mr. M's games are typically that they are one-trick ponies.  You can train your creature....and now I'm taking it away from you.  Now you have it back, but you've probably gotten bored by now.  Have fun!

Well, Molyneaux had better games in the past that were more than "one trick ponies" (in my mind at least):

1. Populous
2. Syndicate
3. Dungeon Keeper

Obviously 1 and 3 also include the sequels.  I think Molyneaux's reputation has been tarnished by Black and White (I liked the game, although I understand people's qualms with it) and he needs it back with Fable and the upcoming Movies and B+W 2.

Isn't Peter also responsible for the awesome Magic Carpet series as well?  Hes got a great track record.  And you have to give him props on innovation on B&W.

Isn't Hero based on some of the same characters as Storm Riders?

Not really.  The three main characters in Storm Riders are Wind, Cloud and Frost.  The storylines between the two are way different.

Ahhh!  Yes.  But that was an american made movie right?  Not Chinese or Japanese.  I'm actually not very familiar with that one.  Is it entertaining?
204  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / HERO! Whoa...awesome movie on: August 31, 2004, 05:44:39 PM
I saw this last year on DVD (chinese import)
-The storyline is a little convoluted and the martial arts are okay.    But the CINEMA work and artistic expression is unbelieveably beautiful.

Whats the movie like in the Cinema?  Is it dubbed?  or subtitled?

I wonder if there are any differences from the Chinese release as far as scenes or editing.  Maybe i should go see it in the theatre...

By the way, If you guys need any recommendations for Kung Fu or Samurai movies just ask. smile
If you really liked the old Clint Eastwood movies (Good Bad Uglt, Fistful of Dollars) you should check out one of the greatest old school Samurai movies with the greatest Japanese actor of all time, Yojimbo starring, ToshirĂ´ Mifune.  Make sure to check out his other movies including Sanjuro and the SUPER LONG (200+ mins) Seven Samurai.  Old american westerns were eventually based on these movies.  More specifically Fistful of Dollars, Magnificent Seven and others.  You'll have to like old school stuff though.  Great storylines.

If you like the special effects and stuff like that I recommend, The Legend of Zu and the okay but cult classic Storm Riders.  You can rent some of these but they are hard to find.  Other wise check out amazon!  They come cheap.

And if you really like cheezy Kung Fu from the 70s and 80s I've got a ton of recommendations including The Prodigal Son, Unbeaten 28 and Five Deadly Venoms.

Most of those IMDB links are the chinese verison.  You can find released american versions of most of these on Amazon.  (most have different covers)

I assume were talking about Star Ocean: Till the End of Time right?  If so I saw the review in GameInformer and they said that the game is really good and their only gripe was that it didn't have the epic storytelling commonly found in other RPGs.

211  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / MS Trying to Buy Nintendo? An interesting comparison on: August 06, 2004, 10:16:04 PM

The bad thing about this is if this happened if Nintendo would become "Americanized."

American games typically have a very serious real-life tone to them. Games like Splinter Cell, Halo, Doom and others (help me out here)
are typical american thinking.  The idea is cool, composed, serious and bad ass.

Japanese designers bring us games like Zelda, Mario, Pikmin, Monster Rancher and Final Fantasy (again... Help me out here).  Which are arcadey, imaginative and "on the lighter side." (all relative)

I love the ideas from both sides of the ocean.  But if we lose one (not that Nintendo is the only game designer) of the sides I will dearly miss the other.  Who would make great console RPGs if the Japanese stopped designing video games?  Who would make me feel so ingrained in seriously saving the world (or nation or town) if American designers quit?

What do you guys think?  Am I full of poo?

Yup.  Attacks require a little more skill than just selecting an attack though.  Each of the attacks and skills requires a different method of hitting the buttons.  Makes it a little more neat in my opinion.

Great game.  Anyone else playing this?

All of the pilots seem as though they're geared for a specific wanzer so I have a melee, missiler, sniper and repair guy.  But now that I have a wider selection of wanzers to choose from, I ended up dropping my melee wanzer for a wanzer with a canon.  Unfortunately the pilot isn't very skilled with the gun and the only weapon upgrade skill choices I have had so far are for melee skills.  Do pilots only have access to specific skills or can any pilot gain any skill?  I don't think my melee pilot has had the chance to get one skill that would help for the new wanzer I bought...

Later in the game you get access to a computer shop where you can purchase skill sets for your pilots.  They're still required to use EP to get the skills but buying them at the computer shop makes them available.

Quote from: "marcain"
Do you have to have a special backpack to call for an ammo drop?  Near the end of a few missions, I have been very very close to having no ammo at all.

If you have problems with ammo just buy ammo items for item carrying packs.  The packs are lightweight and usually you can make room for them by putting on lightweight arms that aren't holding any weapons.

Quote from: "marcain"
Anyone playing without a repair guy?  My battles are usually a 50/50 of shooting and repairing.  I usually park him right behind my wanzer who the enemy is currenly working over and keep repairing him until my other wanzers take out the enemy.  I just can't see this game being playable at all without a repair guy.

This would be really really hard.  The other alternative is buying repair items and keeping them in packs.  These can be extremely helpful even if you do have a repair wanzer just in case more than one wanzer is near death.

Quote from: "marcain"
Are scouts with sensors worth it?  Every time I try to get my scout close enough to something so my missile wanzer can shoot from a distance, the scout gets his ass kicked.  I've been thinking about dropping him for a gunner or something.
This really depends on your style of play and strategy.  One thing to do is make sure the scout has heavy duty parts with as much evasion as possible.  You shuoldn't send him out by himself though.  The other alternative is to get rid of the sensor pack and replace it with an item pack, EMP pack or repair pack.  Then buy him the skills you want him to have in the computer shop.

Quote from: "marcain"
Since there are three different types of armor to choose from, is there any way to know before a mission what armor type you should use?  I have all mine set to piercing since most of the wanzers i've faced are gunners/missilers.

This is pretty much luck unless you have the strategy guide.  You usually want to try and keep your long range wanzers with pierceing (for rifleman) or blast (for missles, bazookas and rockets).  Melee and short range wanzers should usually have piercing or blunt.

Quote from: "marcain"
My only gripe with combat so far has to do with the linking.  I have my wanzers set up so they're attack linked.  Then what I do, once everyone is in position, is have my canon wanzer shoot at someone.  Then my sniper, who is linked to the canon wanzer, usually takes a linked shot before the canon wanzer pulls the trigger.  What's annoying is that if the sniper takes the enemy wanzer out, the canon wanzer loses his turn without doing anything.

This again depends on your style of play.  A really good way to set up links is to only have the gunners linked to your melee types.  Then you can attack first with melee then continue to attack with your gunners as needed.  The melee types always have a ton of AP left over for more attacks so they can attack as many times as you need.  If you link everyone to everyone you will waste your melee wanzers AP because one shot will cause everyone else to use their AP.  Make sure you have just ONE link to your rifleman unless he has 18 AP and keep him around that link.

Quote from: "marcain"
Also, anyone know if the previous front mission games available anywhere?

You MIGHT be able to get Front Mission 3 at Gamestop used (call around and look online at ) everything else is pretty much going to be ebay or amazon.

If you are open to other genres I recommend Gladius, Winning Eleven 7, Samurai/Dynasty Warriors, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004, Worms (non-3d), Power Stone 2 (Dreamcast)....

Oh and you can get Gladius for the Gamecube for $20 right now at EB.

I just traded for Gladius.  Does that have a multiplayer component?

If I were truly a masochist I would buy another copy of NWN and go through that multiplayer.  It fits the bill, but doesn't lend itself to the casual sit-on-the-couch on again/off again gameplay we usually have time for.

Yeah gladius can be played by up to four players but probably works best as two player.  Basically the multiplay consists of the two players choosing who they will control in battle.  The first player pretty much controls everything out of battle but you can switch off on that stuff.

As far as worms goes, Worms Blast is available for the Gamecube.  If you like that I also recommend the Super Bust-A-Move games for the PS2.

My friend and I finally finished Baldur's Gate 2.  We previously played the first installment.  I was wondering what to tackle next.

I figure that Champions of Norrath: Realms of Everquest would be a good bet, as it is made by Snowblind, who made the first BG.  Is this one going to stray too far from the original formula that made the others so great?

If you're looking for the same kind of gameplay then CoN is your best bet by far.  Personally, as multiplayer games go, that genre hasn't produced the great multiplay experience I've been looking for.  If you are open to other genres I recommend Gladius, Winning Eleven 7, Samurai/Dynasty Warriors, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004, Worms (non-3d), Power Stone 2 (Dreamcast)....  Those are what I can think of right of the top of my head.  What some developer needs to do is make a multiplayer RPG like Secret of Mana or Secret of Evermore or a competition game like Uniracers.  They just don't make em like they used to.   biggrin

Oh and you can get Gladius for the Gamecube for $20 right now at EB.

One of the best games EVER made... Period.  The RPG elements were awesome.  The environment was excellent.  The audio was unbelievable scary.  The music even better.  The storyline: excellent.
The graphics could've used some help, I agree.

If you guys want to play it again with a twist go check out System Shock Rebirth.  It has enhanced graphics for the entire game (characters):

Yeah I still don't have one.  I'm still under the impression that there aren't enough good games for the Xbox to warrant a purchase.  And don't tell me HALO because I can get that for the PC.  I'm not a fan of FPS on console nor sports titles.  What I'd really like to see are some great RPGs for the Xbox and maybe some good multiplayer games.  What I'd REALLY like to know is if the stinkin' xbox 2 will have backwards compatibility.
223  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Yap Yap YAAAP! on: June 28, 2004, 05:50:17 PM
Interestingly enough there have been quite a few people complaining about the dialogue in Front Mission 4.  Personally I do like the storyline but I don't like the way they've done the interaction.  The text bubbles and text are two small making it hard to read.  Most of the interaction is done without voiceovers which, in my opinion, help immensly.

The game overall is very addicting though as I always find myself doing more simulator missions to improve my guys and skills before moving on to the next stage.  Very good tactical game.  Would've been much better with a more streamlined storyline and maybe a little bit of non-linearity.  I spose I could save most of this for the review but since the thread is here I thought I'd throw in my two cents. biggrin

OH!  And as for the young whippersnapper comment from Knightshade.  I think that this is a believeable character only due to the fact that (and I know that you're a military man) most men in the military are younger than 20 years old and are still fairly wet behind the ears...  But I'm no expert.  Anyway my point was that I think he is a believeable character, but that's just me.  I actually really like the personality mix and interaction between ALL of the characters in the game (with a few exceptions for some of the SUPER evil bad guys.)

Nice Job Destructor!  You were a lot nicer than I would've been.

To be honest I was going to do a review also...  But once I found out you couldn't play multiplayer I was furious and decided to boycott the game.

In my opinion, there is no other way to play RCR.  I remember playing that game through so many times with my buddy back when we were kids and now we're both 27, still into video games and RCR is re-released.  We were so excited about the new game it was like going to the candy store with a million bucks at age 7.  Then we found out.  BOYCOTT.

Someone remake this one for the PS2 or CUBE and make it multiplayer, keep the same tunes (with better instruments) and add a few levels and items.  Don't screw with the moves too much.  Add support for four players maybe?

*sigh* What a disappointment...  And I usually LOVE ATLUS.

230  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Buying USED Games Hurts Developers? on: June 02, 2004, 09:28:47 PM
The points they make in that article are good ones.  The idea has nothing to do with morality though.  If you want to buy a used game theres nothing wrong with that.  Just know that your money isn't going to the people responsible for making the game and they're not getting any support.  If you'd really like to support a game developer's efforts then buy a game new to try and promote sequels and more work from the same hard working people.

That is all.

235  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Booth Babes- Methinks Thou Can Do Better on: May 15, 2004, 08:11:53 AM
There is a unbreakable unwathering unwashable unwhatever fact in this world....  Women are beautiful and sexy.  Us unfortunate men are stuck with being ugly.  Booth babes are not an objectification of women.  They are gleaming diamonds strategically placed to attract us near them.  If there happens to be a video game nearby...  Well when the beautiful female tells us to go away and we have failed to mate, well then we have something else to do.  Great marketing strategy!

If a large margin of women had a problem with this it wouldn't happen.  Money attracts these models and they don't seem to mind.  So.  Unless you find women in general unattractive or have a real problem with gorgeous models making money (which happens ALL the time), theres nothing you can do (except bi*ch).   We here at console gold like hot girls and we think (for the most part) that most of our readers like them too.  That said, E3 booth babes are a traditional part of E3 and we will continue to show them in all their diamond glory (and dream that they will at least say "Hello!" to us.)

I am of the personal opinion that there are better things to worry about.  Like succeding in my job, starving kids, brutal murder and war...  But maybe I have my priorites screwed up?

Now I know that the real problem lies with young girls thinking that looks are everything, being vain and starving themselves.  Here's my solution to that (as it is with every other friggin' problem in the USA):  Get the parents to go Crosby, Stills and Nash and TEACH YOUR CHILDREN WELL.

We are not promoting the objectification of women.  We are bringing to you the reality of E3.  If you don't like that girls just stand there and look beautiful then maybe you should try and campaign for good looking couples to try and stop having kids.
