2081  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [GC] Paper Mario sequel announced on: May 09, 2006, 06:52:02 PM
Either way, I'm thrilled!
2082  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo E3 Press Conference on: May 09, 2006, 05:44:15 PM
No price? BOOOOOOOOOOOOO! That's the reason I watched. BOOOOOO!
2083  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Sony Press Conference on: May 09, 2006, 02:55:41 AM
Hmmm. IGN has an article discussing what the PS3 controller does in comparison to Wii. They seem to dismiss the PS3 control as being tilt only, but I thought Sony indicated it would do more....Did IGN screw up? (shocker)
2084  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Sony Press Conference on: May 09, 2006, 02:41:57 AM
I'm really surprised that Sony is coming out at a price point $100 higher than the 360. M$ can actually consider NOT cutting the price now for this holiday. And if they do, they could be $130 or $150 cheaper than Sony.

Sony must have a lot of confidence in their "killer apps" to keep them atop the mountain. There is a lot of power in their library. The PS2 was arguably the weakest system powerwise and they still crushed Nintendo and M$. But they were also first.

They should have offered a non-BluRay version or something, especially since BluRay will be worthless with no HDMI port.

Nintendo better have something up their sliive, or M$ may become the new kings of the castle.
2085  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo DS Lite - Out in US June 11th - (for $129) on: May 04, 2006, 05:47:37 PM
Thanks all! Glad to hear gamespot was wrong.
2086  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo DS Lite - Out in US June 11th - (for $129) on: May 04, 2006, 12:35:20 PM
Sigh... IGN and Gamespot agree it's out in the US (white only) on June 11th, but they don't agree on price. IGN says $130, Gamespot says $150. Anyone know who's right? Heaven forbid Nintendo put info up on their own website....

Edit: Gamespot was wrong. It's $129.
2087  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mario - new moves, new powerups on: May 02, 2006, 03:11:28 AM
You know, the more I think about this game, the more I think, why do all 2D games have to be hand held only? Why in the hell couldn't Nintendo make a 2D Mario for the cube too (or the Wii)? I'm not against the 3D games - far from it! But, damn, they could have put this out for the cube and it would have sold billions too... wouldn't it? It surely would have been a bigger system seller than Sunshine was...

PS - The game looks awesome.
2088  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo changes name of Revolution to..... on: May 01, 2006, 10:01:02 PM
I would rather the name be something else, but I doubt Nintendo would create a phony name just to get a firestorm only to say "fool you" at E3. I think this is wishful thinking.
2089  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo changes name of Revolution to..... on: April 30, 2006, 07:21:01 PM
Nintendo's new name has already entered my vocabulary. My girlfriend and I were leaving the grocery store and I really needed to piss bad and I said, "We need to hurry home. I've got to take a wicked Nintendo."

I hope that's what their marketers intended.
2090  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / EA on Madden for the ... ugh... Wii on: April 29, 2006, 05:07:15 AM
Very interesting interview with EA on IGN. I swear this may be the single greatest football game ever made... or quite easily the worst.
2091  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo changes name of Revolution to..... on: April 28, 2006, 12:06:55 PM
I don't know if I (or anyone else) will ever warm up to the "Wii" name, but I do find it amusing to hear everyone clamor they return to "Revolution". Wasn't everyone mocking that code name when it was announced?

I still *hate* Wii. It's a marketer's dream due to all the plays on it you can make in advertising, but it's a stupid, stupid name.
2092  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo changes name of Revolution to..... on: April 27, 2006, 05:38:13 PM
Awful, awful name.

I will still very likely purchase one, but good lord what a terrible name. Hopefully, there will be enough of a backlash for them to rename it outside of Japan. After all we didn't have the "Famicom" here either....
2093  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Seiken Densetsu: Children of Mana impressions [DS] on: April 24, 2006, 02:49:04 AM
Hmmm, sounds pretty neat. Any timetable for a US release?
2094  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Replaying Baldur's Gate on: April 24, 2006, 12:27:02 AM
Hmmm. a few months ago I tried that normal Tutu thing and couldn't get it to work. I may try the Easy tutu if my backlog ever lightens (yeah right). Thanks for the heads up! smile
2095  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 to get processor upgrade in 2007 on: April 21, 2006, 09:47:04 PM
I think it's silly for console makers to announce things like this a full year in advance. I would hold off on these types of announcements until right up to the beginning of production of the new units. It seems to do nothing but disuade people from purchasing now. Is there any advantage to announcing this?
2096  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Space Rangers 2 [US] Impressions on: April 20, 2006, 11:28:16 PM
Has anyone confirmed the D2D version does not have Starforce? Do you get a manual?
2097  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Train that brain! (Brain Age Impressions) on: April 20, 2006, 11:25:40 PM
I have never had any problems with it recognizing colors. Definietly don't get too close to the mike. I don't move the DS at all when speaking to it.
2098  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Train that brain! (Brain Age Impressions) on: April 18, 2006, 12:05:44 PM
I did stumble across this last night and picked it up. I think my first BA test was bugged as it was only 1 test, and it's supposed to be 3. Anyway, got something in the 50's the first time, and 34 this morning. (Crap I am 33.) On one practise last night I got 24, so hopefully 20 will not be beyond me. The voice recognition and stylus writing is very well done, though you'll still get a little miffed when it messes up. The one thing I don't like is when it randomly makes you draw 3 pictures. You can basically skip them, but still...

Sudoku is awesome. By far the best electronic way to play Sudoku that I have encountered. I wish there were more than "over a 100" puzzles, but it will still take me a while to play them all.... I also wish all difficulty levels of Sudoku were unlocked from the start. Beginner is easy to the point of not even being fun, and Intermediate is a little easier than I would like as well, but I haven't unlocked higer difficulties yet, so I am stuck playing through them until the next level opens up.

I see me tiring of the Brain Age stuff quickly, but Sudoku should last me a long time, and at $20... A no brainer if you're interested.
2099  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Train that brain! (Brain Age Impressions) on: April 17, 2006, 09:09:53 PM
Me so in.

Not out around here today. I'm hoping I can pick it up tomorrow. I just want it for the Sudoku, everything else will be a bonus.
2100  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I need help with Zelda: The Wind Waker on: April 14, 2006, 07:16:05 PM
Ok, now that you've disabled the lights you can go to the top of the tower and finish the FF (for now). (BTW, I thought this part of the FF should have been later in the game, it's pretty freaking hard to lose your sword that early in the game, but I digress.)

I don't know exactly where it is on the map, but you're looking for a room that you can enter from a door on either side. In the "middle" of the room is a set of steps that leads up to a double door, which from there you can climb up to the top. The room has two of those hippo/pig dudes who throw the fire at you and put you in the cell if they catch you. There is barrel by either entrance you can hide in. The room looks like this:

EDIT: Well crap, I couldn't get the post to leave my spaces in  to show it properly... It's basically shaped like a door frame with the entrances on either side of the "bottom" of the frame and the stairs at the right side of the "top" of the doorframe.
2101  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Brain Age (DS) on: April 10, 2006, 11:47:10 PM
So I found out the Japanese sensation "Brain Age" which comes out next week for the DS has Sudoku in it. Sudoku you play with the stylus writing in the #'s like you do in the newspaper. It will also cost $20.

IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2102  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [GC] How is Baten Kaitos? on: April 06, 2006, 11:50:56 AM
I haven't played it for a while since Fire Emblem came out and distracted me from it. The graphics are fantastic. The voice acting is awful - among the worst I have ever heard in a game. The story was pretty uninteresting to me, though I was only maybe 10 hours in.

I did like the card battle system a lot, other than the stupid initial timer being impossibly short (on defense).

Hopefully, I will get back to it someday.
2103  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Getting a 360 this weekend.. I hope.. on: April 01, 2006, 05:15:25 AM
I've still never seen one in a store, but having said that according to the BB website, my local best buy has had 360s in stock for 3 straight days, so I would guess there is at least some truth to the rumors.
2104  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Revolution Specs on IGN - Less Powerful than the Xbox 1 on: March 31, 2006, 01:44:55 PM
I am hopeful and worried about the Rev.

I think, unquestionably, that the Rev has the potential to just freaking OWN the FPS genre. I just can't play them on consoles with the 2 sticks. I just can't get the hand of that scheme. The rev controller *might* be able to play those games even *better* than a PC mouse/keyboard combo. But, they have to actually be MADE for the system. Other than the new Metroid Prime will they come?

I also am excited about the potential of the controller. It could allow a lot more PC type games to come out for a home console and have more of a PC interface. But, will those games be made? I doubt Nintendo will make them, so will others?

I also see Rev being able to play games unlike anything we've played before. But, they have to be fun, and they have to come up with a lot of them. Who will?

I do think the low price point is a good idea, but how low will it be? People speculate $150-200. Nintendo has only said "less than $300". I really think it needs to be $150 at most to really significantly have a price advantage that matters.

But the question is 3rd party support. Will the new controller and lower dev costs be enough to get 3rd party developers to make many orders of magnitude more games for Rev than they did for the cube? I just don't think anyone knows at this point. If they do, I could see Rev doing very well. If not, I could see it bombing big time. With the new Zelda essentially being a Rev "launch" title now (despite still being playable on the cube) I can now see me being an early adopter. (What can I say? I'm a total mark for Zelda.) I hope I don't get burned.

I would be astonished if there isn't a Mario (the long rumored "Mario 128") as another launch for the Rev. So, I hope we'll see it at E3, and I really hope they've come up with a cool new way to play it with the Rev remote. If I'm right, that would mean they would have a Mario, Metroid, AND (sort of) a Zelda at launch. That would be unprecedented, and I think would *really* make it seem like a very strong selection of launch titles no matter what else is available. I think this would be smart, as the best way for Nintendo to get lots of 3rd party support is to have a very successful holiday launch. And, I think 3rd party support will do more to help or hurt Rev than virtually anything else.

As far as the horsepower thing goes, the article pretty much goes along with what Nintendo has said all along. It will be about twice as powerful as a cube. We'll see if that ends up being enough.
2105  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Zelda uses Rev controller on: March 31, 2006, 01:32:28 PM
Cool interview! Thanks for posting it!
2106  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Impressions on: March 29, 2006, 02:17:57 PM
I've only done the 1st gate, but it wasn't my favorite part of the game either. I think I may make liberal use of the difficulty slider during these parts. smile

If so, and you already own a DS, I strongly suggest you go out right now and buy A Link to the Past for the GBA. One of the greatest games EVAR~!~!~!

2109  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / TV: Doctor Who *finally* comes to the US on: March 21, 2006, 01:10:10 AM
Russel T. Davies has stated repeatedly that Eccleston is the 9th Doctor.

A Time Lord can regenerate 12 times, so in theory that means there can be 13 Doctors in all. Of course, if it comes to it they'll simply concoct a reason for him to be able to keep regenerating when they need to.
2110  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / TV: Doctor Who *finally* comes to the US on: March 19, 2006, 02:29:07 AM
I'll try to answer some questions...

Re: Doctor's motivation. The Doctor's people, the Time Lords were generally portrayed as this society that was technologically advanced to the point they were almost "above" other species. Certainly, that was THEIR opinion of their stature. Generally, they sealed themselves away from everyone and simply observe all the goings on of the "lesser" races and feel smug about themselves. The Doctor hated this and wanted to get out there and be involved with all the goings on in the universe. He also came to be a champion for "good" and felt it was irresponsible for the Time Lords to sit still and just observe while evil forces run free. In short, his motivation is that he just has an insatiable thirst to see more, do more, experience more and learn more. And along the way he rights wrongs and has tons of fun while all the while his life is constantly threatened.

(Why doesn't he change the past for his planet?) Having said that, there are some sort of undefined rules about meddling with history. Yes, the Doctor often travels around and interferes liberally with the goings on. But, when he knows about what has already transpired, he doesn't (and can't) change things to make things happen. Sometimes he "bends" the rules a bit, but generally speaking he is able to run around interfering because he doesn't know specifically what was supposed to have happened in the incidents he interferes in. (Ie. in The End of the World, he knows the Earth is finally destroyed and doesn't interfere with it. But, he didn't know about Cassandra's (albeit non-sensical) plot, and freely interfered with her machinations.) Later on in "Father's Day" (the 8th episode) it should become obvious why he doesn't go back in time and save his own planet.

How did the mannequin's get the guns in their hands? The short and easy answer is, "because on the old show they had them". On the original episode with the Autons and the Nestene Consciousness they replaced the shop dummies with "Autons" who had the guns. Presumably, they might have done the same thing here without explaining things properly. "Rose"'s actual plot is sacrificed a lot since they had to cram so much introductory content into it.

I hope you noobs will stick with it. Next week's episode "The Unquiet Dead" (3rd ep) is my favorite of the first 5 episodes. After that you have 2 that were well received by the general British audience, but die hard Who fans had some problems with (including me). After those you have one of the best in the whole season ("Dalek"), and things start to really take off. The best episodes are the 9th and 10th ("The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances") which are mind blowingly awesome. It generally gets better as it goes along.
2111  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Zelda uses Rev controller on: March 16, 2006, 02:22:28 PM
Of course the quote is up on the front page of GT. But, what I wanted to comment on was the actual quote itself. It certainly implies to me that they really DIDN'T do anything special to Zelda to make it work, but that you could use the Rev controller to play ANY Gamecube game! Am I the only one who infers that from the quote? Very intriguing if true.

Of course it was probably translated from Japanese, so maybe I'm reading to much into the wording.
2112  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guitar Hero question... on: March 14, 2006, 03:35:50 PM
I play bass, and I found the game fun when I tried it out. It will probably put you a little ahead of the learning curve in so far as getting familiar with the controller.

I like Guitar Hero, and will probably buy it someday when it's dropped in price (if it ever does), but it essentially is just DDR with better music and a controller that doesn't get you exercise. smile
2113  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The ending of Superstar Saga... on: March 08, 2006, 12:16:09 PM
Yes, I *loathed* the final boss as well. I am sure it took me 10 tries or so to beat her. I think I ended up going to the towns and getting some different equipment which helped. Great game, but I was very frustrated at many points during it (especially the last boss).

I liked Paper Mario better.

I have the new M&L for the DS, but haven't started it yet.
2114  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo can botch a launch too!! on: March 02, 2006, 01:50:10 PM
Wow. Amazing reaction for a simple "Mark 2" of an existing product.
2115  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So...can you get Oblivion preorders? on: March 01, 2006, 04:03:42 PM
Best Buy has the preorder boxes on the shelves.
2116  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Revolution SDK only $2000 - projected price $150-$200 on: February 24, 2006, 03:08:24 PM
I won't be happy with anything over $200. (Although unless it's REALLY cheap, the games available at launch will determine my interest more than anything else.)

I was thinking that even if it IS dirt cheap (say $99-$149) there could be other hidden costs. What exactly will you be getting with the Rev in its base package? A remote controller? An analog stick add-on? The "standard controller" shell? If these things aren't all packaged with it, the costs of the console could go up depending on what you actually need to play the launch games. Or will certain games ship with these controller add-ons? And if they do, will that makes the games cost more? And how much will Rev games cost anyway? Are they going to be $60 like the X-Box 360? Or will the (apparently) lower dev costs allow them to keep the current price scale? Lots of variables are out there in regards to Rev pricing. Hopefully E3 will shed light on most or all of these questions.
2117  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Revolution SDK only $2000 - projected price $150-$200 on: February 24, 2006, 01:14:04 PM
The scary thing is that Nintendo has only ever said $300 or less for the price. With all these articles speculating $150-$200 (albeit mainly from IGN), us diehards are going to cry "foul" if they announce an initial MSRP of $299. (I think they would be insane to price it anywhere close to PS3 or XBox 360...)
2118  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So I finally got a PS2 on: February 22, 2006, 12:43:54 PM
Is it possible to get a PS2 controller that doesn't have the left analog stick on the bottom of the controller? I can't stand that setup! It's very uncomfortable. I much prefer the Gamecube/X-Box positioning of the left analog stick.
2119  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / TV for my 360 on: February 16, 2006, 10:36:38 PM
Pingwrx, I've heard nothing but praise for that line of Sony's so well done!
2120  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo DS Lite vs Nintendo DS - comparison shots... on: February 16, 2006, 08:02:00 PM
Quote from: "Andrew Mallon"

Still, I'm not going to shell out $179 to replace my existing DS, but maybe after a price drop or two it'll be worth it.

Yikes! It's going to cost more than the original DS did at launch?! BOOO!

I like it a lot. The only drawback (well... besides price) is that GBA games stick out some. That's lame.
