I guess I'll buy that there's more of it in SS, but I just replayed about half of Wind Waker and it has PLENTY of hand holding in its own right. The king of red lions is basically telling you where to go and what to do. Wind Waker was certainly easier than SS so far... Although most of my difficulty is with the controls and winning even some of the routine fights take me way too long.

Just entered the second temple and am still having enough fun to keep playing, but I know the battles are going to get harder and I shudder to think how much more "precise" I am going to have to get with the sword....

Hard to believe I waited 2 years to try a new Zelda game, but that says nearly everything about the meteoric rise and catastrophic fall of the Wii.

I gave this to my brother for Xmas two years ago, and this year he finally gave up on it pretty close to finishing it. My best gaming friend is a much more die hard video game player than I am (I apparently like reading gaming forums and news more than playing games these days....) and he gave up on this game because he hated the controls. So, my expectations were very low when I fired this up earlier this week.

I will admit to being VERY charmed by this early on. I liked the way they built up to your first time flying and it did have me anticipating it. I also found the Zelda/Link relationship cute. I even found the motion controls to be pretty fun the first night. However, the second and third day I played this when I finally got to some actual gameplay, my opinion definitely soured. This game exemplifies what's wrong with motion controls. WAY WAY too much of this game depends on shoe horned motion controls to accomplish certain things I would much rather do with a thumbstick or button press. The more intense fights I have had so far have had me furious at the sword controls, which don't always respond correctly. Plus, they just aren't quite responsive enough, which acts as an unwanted difficulty booster. Controlling the beetle with the Wiimote is a torturous pain, and would be 100% easier just driving it with the thumbstick. There are many other examples of these types of things where traditional controls would increase my enjoyment and decrease my frustration. I think there is a pretty neat Zelda game to be had here, but I expect it's a matter of when, not if, I give up in frustration. Still enjoying it enough to plod on... for now.

Gamespot review does (briefly) talk about the PS4 version. They loved it 9/10.

This review has made me think that this series is just not for me anymore. I am in the minority in that I really did not enjoy the ship combat in AC3. It sounds like the ship combat is a major component to this game, which will probably please many. I loved AC2, brotherhood, and even the first one. But Revelations and AC3 turned me off greatly and if anything this new one seems less appealing to me, and veering farther away from what I loved about the series in the first place.
164  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: You know what I hate about IOS7? on: October 29, 2013, 03:56:12 AM
Not the one you asked, but many ipad 3 owners, including myself, wish they hadn't upgraded to IOS7. There is a noticeable dip in performance. It's nice that the newest update allows us to disable the zooming effect which was very stuttery. But, there is no denying how much smoother my ipad worked before the jump to 7. I still like my ipad a lot, and it's still a much better tablet than my previous android tablet was, but it  just doesn't work as smoothly on version 7. And personally, I preferred the old look (not that I hate the new one). I also see little functional gain from the upgrade. The one thing I can think of which I like better is the multitasking/application interface which is much nicer. I'd still prefer my ipad the way it was, assuming I could keep apps up to date and not lose functionality.

I think the surprise is while the XBone only runs at 30 FPS in 720p and the PS4 runs at 60 FPS at 1080p, the PS4 version is only displayed in black and white while the XBone is in color. I was pretty surprised!

168  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 30 days until launch. Which system are you getting? on: October 19, 2013, 04:28:16 PM
Nothing for me. I already bought my last gaming console for a while this week, the 3DS XL. smile

I think the launch lineups are awful for both consoles. Of the 3 "next gen" consoles, the Wii U has one game I am interested in (Wind Waker HD) which is something I've already played.

I really was hoping the XBone or the PS4 would come out for around $300. At $399 or $499, I am just not interested until one of them has multiple games I am interested in playing.

Now, I keep hearing about how these things are basically "PCs". If someone hacks one puts Windows on it and declares one or the other a viable gaming PC, then I would be far more interested. Or, if not viable as a gaming PC, if viable as a HTPC, then I might get one sooner than planned.

But, no immediate plans to buy either running their native OS.

I own a DS but haven't done much with it the past few years. I think the last game I bought for it was Zelda spirit tracks which I really didn't care for. I'm excited for the Zelda in this thread which looks fantastic. I am curious about the new lungi mansion game which looks cute. I am curious about super Mario land 3d if isn't too difficult. Any other must haves for the 3ds?

What is your problem with the 3DS?  I've been very happy with mine.

I have no problem with it as much as I have tried to avoid it due to my tiring of the portable gaming device form factor. I prefer gaming in front of a PC or on a big TV rather than my hands cramping and my eyes straining on a small hand held console. I'd probably prefer it if the 3ds had a form factor more similar to the Vita (one big screen instead of 2 smaller screens).

Having said that, games wins out I guess. I finally took my first leap to the "next gen" and got a 3DSXL yesterday. I was very concerned about how bad the screen looked for a while until I finally figured out that the 3d slider clicks off to turn actually turn off the 3D. (I have double vision so 3D doesn't work for me. With 3D on, even on the lowest setting the whole screen looked wobbly to me in a very bad way.). Of course it took a couple hours for me to figure this out.

Fry's had one for $20 off and I couldn't resist. smile

So once I finish with Ocarina (which looks very nice on the tiny eye straining screen and heaven knows I needed to spend money on yet ANOTHER copy of that game) what should I get next?

Anyone know if it's possible to get inside (indoors) the airport? I am on my 3rd full work week traveling and when I return I think I could really channel a lot of frustration if I could run wild in a virtual airport.

Agreed, I thought it looked awesome. Too bad it's only on a system I don't plan to ever own. I'll repeat it again. I would buy a Wii U today if it had a GBA player like functionality for 3DS games.

We had to put our oldest cat down on Labor Day weekend. We've had to put 3 cats to sleep over the past six years. It just keeps getting more and more difficult. This recent one was my "stalker". 9/10 times when I would sit on the couch he would be on the couch within a few minutes butting his head against me to get on my lap and be petted. It almost got annoying. Now my lap is cold. Even after nearly a month I keep looking around when I am on the couch (like right now) looking for someone that isn't coming.

Sorry for your loss.

hold down on the left d-pad to bring up a radial wheel with all the stations, then use the right thumbstick to browse them.  whichever the thumbstick is on when you release the d-pad will be your new station.

Thank you! (Big help! I am sad that Just or Unjust didn't seem to make it to the sequel.)

Despite the lower potential for firey carmageddon, I am really enjoying the game. One thing that is so much improved here is when you fail missions (I do this a lot) you can restart (or retry if you have progressed in the mission) without replaying lots of things over again. I think the mission which drove me to give up on GTA4 was the strip club mission. Once I got to the driving/chasing/shooting part of that mission, I just could never complete it. Not only did I have to start the whole mission over every time, I had to drive across town to get to the damn mission. This is a huge improvement in 5 (at least so far).

At some point I am going to hope Franklin dies... How many times is he going to keep going along with Lamar's hair brained schemes? I'm beginning to think Franklin is actually the bigger idiot of the two since he just keeps going right along with him...
179  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Grand Theft Auto V on: September 18, 2013, 03:50:01 AM
The glowing reviews and finding out I had $170 in Best Buy reward zone points resulted in me unexpectedly buying this.

It does seem to look a bit better than 4. I don't really notice any big differences in the driving. I don't really have much empathy for any of the characters yet, unlike Nico. I do like that fairly early on you can pretty much drive anywhere you want, unlike in 4 where they kept you locked in one section of the city. On a drive around, I did see some awesome scenery.

Having said that, I am disappointed in this early on. Oh, the game may end up better, but a couple of the things I loved about 4 don't seem as good here:

1. The radio. I wasn't exactly a huge fan of 4's music either, but it just seems dreadful here. I need to look up the song list. I also have been disappointed in the talk radio I've heard so far. I chuckled a lot at this in 4, but thus far, I've barely cracked a smile in this one. Plus, I hate the interface for the radio. It's hard for me to tell what station I am on (it goes away too quickly) and I hate only being able to tune in one direction. BOOOO! I really wish they'd do another 80s game. I love Vice City's soundtrack.

2. It's hard to blow up cars in this game! I never finished GTA 4, as I just lost interest in doing some of the goofy missions. But, I played GTA 4 enough hours to probably get through the game a few times. The main thing I loved to do in 4 was drive around in a car, crash into a lot of other cars until it caught on fire, then try to park the car in close proximity of other cars. Then I would run from my car and watch my car blow up, and cause a chain reaction of other explosions on other cars. This always cracked me up. I swear one time I blew up around 40 cars from my car's first explosion since more and more cars kept driving up and catching on fire. This just doesn't work well in this game. So far, 2 out of the 3 times I got a car on fire, the flames simply went out and the car was dead. BOOOO! I did get one to blow up, but I had to get it seriously burning first, and I barely got out of it on time to not be blown up. Probably no big deal to most people, but seriously, this was my favorite part of GTA4. frown

Guess I will have to find new ways to have maniacal fun in this new sandbox. Maybe I'll play the main story all the way through, although I tend to suck at these missions in these games.

At your price range buy a Panasonic plasma. The low end 50" can be had for as low as $450. Even these bottom of the barrel 720p plasmas look better than the vast majority of the much more expensive LED sets you'll see. Spend a little more and you an get a 1080p plasma for well within your budget.
181  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii U] Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker remake on: September 12, 2013, 11:43:47 PM
I loved TP. I thought and think WW is great, but it had some glaring flaws, especially the excessive sailing and triforce hunt. TP I think is on par with Ocarina of Time (I probably prefer TP but OoT was more original and TP to a great extent mimics it). I have still never played Skyward Sword since I have heard so many negatives about the controls.
182  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii U] Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker remake on: September 12, 2013, 03:13:49 AM
The HD version is almost universally better... but, the bloom is overdone for me. Of course, I generally don't care for bloom effects anyway. I feel there are some scenes where the colors are a bit washed out looking on the HD one. Still for the most part, the HD version is pretty impressive. When the Wii U is cheap in a few years, I'll probably check this out again. (As I mentioned earlier, been playing the cube version the last few weeks, and it still looks great on a 60" plasma.)

(Forgive me if I posted this earlier). I really think Twilight Princess would benefit more from the HD remake than WW. The cel shaded style holds up pretty well, but TP had some seriously blurry textures that would probably look amazing cleaned up in HD. I also like TP a lot more... not that WW isn't great.

Sigh... I knew it wasn't coming but still bummed at the lack of a bigger screen size. Oddly enough I am mildly tempted by the cheap 5c. If the S4 would drop to $99 this Fall, that would create a nice dilemma for me.... Or I may just suffer with my Razr for another 6-12 months....

GTA 5.  maybe later..
Ac4. Not now. Revelations and III burned me.
Batman... After AC not willing to pay full price... Unless I hear it's more like AA.

I think the next new game I'll pick up is Thief depending on PC system requirements.

I think my tastes are drifting away from the norm somewhat, as I think this fall release slate is pitiful. I also can find zero launch games of interest for the new consoles.

190  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii U] Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker remake on: August 23, 2013, 01:30:36 AM
I watched some footage on gamespot and it looks very nice. I like that they have added a fast mode for sailing. I also think managing items on the pad is nice, plus they added touch screen aiming for the now and the ability to move in this mode - Zelda FPS!

Having said that, I still think the Wii U is around $100 too expensive for me, so last night I hooked up my GAMECUBE~! and fired up vanilla Wind Waker. I have all 3 "current gen" systems and none of them have my love like the cube did. It warmed the cockles of my heart to fire it up again. Wind Waker holds up VERY well graphically after all this time. Yes, 480p is a bit glaring on a 60" plasma, but the artistic style is still beautiful. The most jarring thing is how awkward the Wavebird is now. That was my favorite controller ever, but the 360 controller has converted me. Anyway, I am in the forest dungeon now, and the game is still a blast... at least until the tri-force hunt starts...

If you have a Wii U this will be a no brainer.

I've enjoyed the last two episodes but generally find season five to be far less compelling than the first 4 seasons. Part of me still thinks they should have jut quit after season four as its ending was fantastic and would have been fine as a series finale.

I am still excited to see how they end the series.
