Beat akalabeth once.
Beat 1-4 too many times to remember.
Beat 5 and 6 twice.
Beat 7-9 all at least once.

Played the underworlds and worlds games but haven't beaten them.

Looking back I am amazed at how me and a buddy were able to finish many of the early ones without the Internet. I think we had clue books for 2 and 3 but I am pretty sure we just compared notes for 4 and 5.

I've replayed pretty much all of them recently (within the last five years) and they hold up pretty well - admittedly with a heavy heaping of nostalgia. Eight and nine were horrific disappointments but even they have one or two things going for them.

It makes me sad that the franchise is essentially dead and has been for over a decade. Yet another reason to love EA...

I'm all for an older Doctor.

Capaldi has actually already appeared in Doctor Who (and Torchwood) not that that means he won't get the part. (It's happened before.) I think if they hold to form, none of the predictions will prove correct. I am in the no-female camp, though great female actress would trump mediocre male actor.
164  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii U on: August 01, 2013, 02:16:13 AM
I read that at the non discounted price they are still selling at here in the US Nintendo is still selling it at a loss. So I doubt a much needed price drop is coming soon, although it would seem like they have to lower it for the PS4/XBone launch. But, as others keep noting what it really needs is games.

I loved the Wii for its first year or so, but then the games really dried up for me. Them releasing subpar metroid and Zelda games after 2 initially great ones has left me very skeptical of the new system - along with it being underpowered... And overpriced. I think it also has a bit of an identity crisis. Is it an HD Wii or is it about the new gamepad controller?

I'd love a GameCube 2 which is small, super powered and costs less than the competitors by being nothing but a high powered game machine with wireless recharging Wavebird controllers. That would rock.
165  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nintendo doing something with Eternal Darkness? sequel? a VC release? HD update? on: August 01, 2013, 02:01:22 AM
I think it's probably just a straight VC release for the Wii U, but I would be SO in for an HD release. I guess that would mean I'd have to buy a Wii U.

So I want this to succeed, but I don't want to support it, not yet. Dyack skeeves me bad though. However an 8-10 hour game like ED in HD sounds awesome for 25$ so it may be hard to resist. Sounds like they have a publisher/investor too.

Maybe this will lead to an HD remake of ED or at least an eshop/vc release

I would buy an ED HD remake on the spot regardless of which console I had to buy!

I've been trudging through Voyager for months now. I am on the last season but have been derailed by finally watching Blakes 7 for the first time. (Spoiler, it's much better than Voyager.) I am about mid way through the last season of Voyager. It has been a bumpy ride to say the least. They do sprinkle in just enough good episodes to keep me interested (and there have even been a few great ones here and there), but the writing and acting for some of the primary cast members is so inferior to TNG and ESPECIALLY DS9. It's amazing how much more continuity and character development DS9 got than the other Trek shows. I still need to give Enterprise a try at some point, but probably not until 2014 at the earliest....

It seems strange that Respawn is releasing a version of Titanfall for the 360 too.  I don't remember a developer ever doing that during a new console generation launch.  They normally go all in with the new generation of consoles.  I'm sure they know there will be side by side comparisons between XB1 and 360 versions.  I would think they would want the difference to be huge, to encourage more XB1 sales, and to validate new XB1 purchases, but at the same time they don't want to make a crappy 360 port.

Nintendo did it with Twilight Princess.

It seemed to me that Nintendo did it for just about everything...  It seems that the only thing that ever came out on the Wii were GC ports, at lease initially.  Man, I do t miss the days of that being the only console I owned...

I own the Wii, PS3, and the 360 and I loved the GameCube more than all of them combined...

Though the ps3 is a great media machine....

Yes what I was saying was that android was a niche before the release of the droid and it may not have blown up if the iPhone hadn't stuck with AT&T for so long.
174  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Back to Apple for me... on: June 23, 2013, 11:30:03 PM
I still think Apple erred greatly when they didn't get their phones to other carriers besides AT&T a year or two earlier. I don't know what their contractual obligations were to AT&T back then, but I think just about ANY price they might have had to pay to get out of that exclusivity agreement would have been worth it. Plenty of people like me were unwilling to switch to the pathetic AT&T network back in the day and were DYING for an iPhone. Once the original Motorola Droid came out, it was a massive hit, and Android exploded. I still wonder if the iPhone had been on Sprint and Verizon before that phone came out, would Android still be a niche? Perhaps not, but part of me thinks the iPhone would still be crushing the smart phone market as opposed to having a healthy chunk of the market share (but smaller than Android).
175  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox One Discussion on: June 23, 2013, 11:24:03 PM
There is an inherent superior value to a digital license on a PC vs a console. Once the 360 is discontinued, (which MS hasn't announced yet, but once they stop selling they will be gone quickly) all those digital purchases for the 360 are useless (once your 360 dies and you can't replace it). On the PC I can still play games that are DECADES old. Are all games 100% compatible? No, but with the openness of the PC platform, dedicated fans can usually mod the game to make it work. Not to mention a service like GOG goes through at least some effort to make the old ones work on more modern PCs. Will your XBone digital purchases work on the next XBox? Who knows?

I'm thinking of switching from a Verizon Iphone 4S to a Samsung Galaxy S4. My primary reason is to get a bigger screen. I don't run any iOS specific apps, so I'm not concerned about the quantity and quality of the apps stores. I do use my pda to access work MS Outlook based email, contacts and calendar. I've had syncing problems on my Iphone, particularly the Outlook calendar. Can anyone give me their 2 cents as to whether this is a good move or not?

A coworker of mine has an s4 and loves it. A couple others have an s3 and love it. Your outlook needs should be just fine on any android phone, though I've never had any problems on my ipad with that either....

I don't know about the note, but the s3 and s4 have beautiful screens and fit easily in my pocket. They are pretty much the same size as my droid razr which is a 4.3" screen. I refuse to downsize my screen to get an iPhone. My wife's iPhone 5 seems tiny to me.

I agree, but I thought the gameplay still looked fun, and they claim you can ghost through the whole game, so hopefully I will still be able to play it the same way I played the first 3 games...

Still hate the new garret voice.

I don't really care for the new look of iOS7 either. Having said that, it won't have any impact on my next phone decision. I really want to get an iPhone next as I have had enough with the foibles of android, BUT apple has got to make a phone with a much bigger screen than they do now. That is my only factor in deciding whether I go apple over android ....

I am mystified that nintendo hasn't dropped the price of the Pee U yet. A pretty weak showing for that console today.

I would buy a Wii U today if I could play 3DS games on it. THAT system has a bunch of stuff I want to play, but I don't like the DS/portable form factor anymore. They should come out with a peripheral like the GBA reader they had for the GameCube. I would be all over the Wii U for that....

Other M, to me, killed the Metroid series for a while.

It's the only Metroid game I haven't played. From what I read, it didn't seem like a Metroid game I wanted to play and neither of my kids were interested in it either.
The gameplay is Other M was actually fine.  The problem was they shoehorned in a train wreck of a story that took center stage and gave Sammus a daddy complex and more or less destroyed any credibility she had as a bounty hunter.

I felt there were plenty of problems with the gameplay, but yes the story was horrid.

Other M is the highlander 2 of the metroid series. Team ninja should never be let near that franchise ever again.
183  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: E3 2013 - Sony up later. on: June 11, 2013, 03:36:03 AM
Well, I don't see myself being an early adopter for either. I am much more inclined to buy a PS4 over the XBone at this point, based on what I know now, but I doubt it will happen in 2013 or next year. I wish Sony would offer a controller with the left stick in the "correct" position. I hate Sony's controllers.

I'd still like to know the viability of hacking either new system into being an actual gaming PC given the apparent PC architecture they both have.

I am running out of steam with this. My TR is level 41 now and my fun factor is declining greatly. I am playing single player content 3-4 levels lower than me and am dying now more than ever before since my cleric can't stay upright and I can't heal myself often enough. (Maybe I am just a poor player.) I suspect I haven't levelled my toon correctly since I am mostly still using early level skills since I like them more than the later ones and the later attacks seem to do the same damage when maxed. I know TRs tend to love the flurry attack but I hated it and went back to my original one. I also haven't poured a cent into the game and think that probably is making things harder (and that's probably the point). I do think there is a lot of fun in this game, but it really just makes me think I should play a single player action RPG instead of this one. I will probably try to grind my way to 60, but it's really made me want to give NWN2 another try (which I bought from GoG last night).

I have mostly been disappointed with the Foundry quests. They all seem to look and play alike, with the main differences being the amount and quality of the writing. With some exceptions, the writing is very poor.

I do want to play a bit more. I have 100 zen and want to get enough to open one of those damned lock boxes just to see what's in it. smile

Fun game, and I certainly got my (no) money's worth.
186  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox One Discussion on: June 07, 2013, 11:33:55 AM
I borrowed games from a friend which accounted for about 90% of my gaming on the 360. MS says loaning games is not supported at launch, but they are thinking about it.... I do not expect Sony to be significantly different with their DRM system. As I noted before, this will move me to pc gaming almost exclusively where prices drop much more quickly and farther. I will be a very late (if ever) adopter of the Xbone or ps4 (if ever) and I definitely won't own both like I did this gen.

If Nintendo would release some games I care about, then I would be all over their crummy system where at least I own the products I pay for...
187  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: What book/book series do you wish you could read again for the first time? on: May 28, 2013, 11:42:05 PM
The Stand is generally the favorite book of King fans. It's not my favorite, but I do think it's very good. I've alwys disliked the ending a lot. I also recommend the original version over the unabridged version. There's a reason long winded authors need editors.

I love the Dark Tower but the ending and the added meta-fiction added to the final two books were very disappointing for me. I need to check out the wind in the keyhole, which may warrant a whole series reread....

The Harry Potter books are awesome. While the first two books are lighter and slightly more youth oriented, I just love them. I love the potter universe and the introduction to it is just wonderful. Plus, the potter series has a great, very satisfying ending.

Now that it is mercifully complete, it's easy to recommend the Wheel of Time. Great ending.
188  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Based entirely on the 1st presentations of the PS4 / XBOne, which would you buy? on: May 28, 2013, 11:20:30 PM
Right now, neither. I want to know how much they are. I also want to know if either will continue to allow borrowed / used game as they are allowed this gen. If I can't borrow games, I plan on being a late adopter or at least holding out until a must have comes out that isn't payable on my current pc.

At this point I think it's more likely I will buy a Wii U (which I currently think is just awful) before the other two, but this is based on my hopes that they will release a Zelda or Metroid game that doesn't suck and that if they do the console will cost much less by then.

If you watched anything of the PS4's reveal, they showed off developer friendly PC-like architecture, all sorts of developer friendly programs and features, etc. The whole thing reeked of corporate style humility, which is not the same as real humility, but it's enough to show that they understand what went wrong.

They even talked openly about the mistakes they made with the PS3. It was the kind of humility that really restores one's faith in their ability to deliver. If they mess this up, they're done. Luckily it seems like they won't mess it up.

Well, they haven't announced pricing yet.  Let's avoid aspirational.

Agreed. While the Xbone has generated a lot of ill will from me, I expect to not be interested in either console because I expect them to be so expensive. Honestly, if they came out at $300, I would have to think hard about whether I wanted a console with a sparse amount of games at that price. Given that I don't think anyone thinks they will be that cheap, I am defintely not planning to be an early adopter. As I said in the xbone thread, a large portion of my gaming this gen was done with borrowed games and discounted steam games.

Sounds like I may just go back to pc only next gen. While nothing about the ps4 seems bad in any new way, it does sadly still require me to use a playstation controller. The xbone just sounds hideous, especially given  about 90% of the Xbox 360 games I played were borrowed from a buddy.

Oh we'll, I had way more fun with the GameCube then I did with all 3 of the current gen systems.

I don't think this is really a spoiler, but just in case... (very beginning of DLC opening cutscene spoiler)

Spoiler for Hiden:
They show you a cut scene of the character you play in this DLC killing the Empress (at the beginning of the proper Dishonored game). I find it an absolutely STUPID decision that they didn't have you PLAY this section of the game....

Michael Madsen is fine as the main character's voice... This guy's not a mute like Corvo.

Time to get windows 9 out! I'm not at all surprised. Consolidating you market leading desktop os with your phone/tablet os which is just tanking in the market isn't a good idea? Wow!

I have 8 on my gaming pc, and while I don't have problems, it certainly adds nothing. I don't ever use metro, and the thing defintely does not boot up any quicker than 7 did. On a desktop pc, a mouse and keyboard is just much more intuitive and accurate. Duh...

Yeah, we have issues with audio dropping out on AirPlay as well. I have a couple of different airplay devices that we've tried and the behavior is the same. In our case, the wifi in the house is handled by a couple of airport base stations, which I think are the problem.

I tend to blame the drops on AirPlay itself (the protocol) more than the actual devices. As I said earlier, I tend to have better luck with (much) older versions of iTunes running on XP with not having these. I know at one point streaming to an Airport Express connected via ethernet cable (wireless disabled) I still got periodic audio drops. Ridiculous. I know the fidelity is superior to Blutooth streaming, but man it sure is finicky.

The only PC in the house that hasn't had the audio drops is my wife's Mac... although that's a limited sample size as we have had it for less than a year and haven't used it much for streaming. I know from years of reading apple forums on the Airport Express that the Mac is not immune to the drops...

Ironically, last night's failure, seemed to finally be fixed today by my rebooting my main streaming PC. Of course last night I couldn't stream from a different PC either, and it streamed OK today without a reboot... Sigh... that is how my adventures with Air Play have gone lo these many years...
