161  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Putting down a pet sucks on: September 27, 2013, 11:42:56 PM
We had to put our oldest cat down on Labor Day weekend. We've had to put 3 cats to sleep over the past six years. It just keeps getting more and more difficult. This recent one was my "stalker". 9/10 times when I would sit on the couch he would be on the couch within a few minutes butting his head against me to get on my lap and be petted. It almost got annoying. Now my lap is cold. Even after nearly a month I keep looking around when I am on the couch (like right now) looking for someone that isn't coming.

Sorry for your loss.

I actually got the 66U, the AC one, this week. Haven't really put any heavy load on it yet, but it's fine so far. Very simple to set up and seems to have a wide array of options for stock firmware.

Awesome. The ending was awesome seeing the transformation on Walt's face. I expect high amounts of bad assery next week.

I don't care if Intellivision has better graphics than my Atari. I don't like that goofy disc controller and Atari still rules.

hold down on the left d-pad to bring up a radial wheel with all the stations, then use the right thumbstick to browse them.  whichever the thumbstick is on when you release the d-pad will be your new station.

Thank you! (Big help! I am sad that Just or Unjust didn't seem to make it to the sequel.)

Despite the lower potential for firey carmageddon, I am really enjoying the game. One thing that is so much improved here is when you fail missions (I do this a lot) you can restart (or retry if you have progressed in the mission) without replaying lots of things over again. I think the mission which drove me to give up on GTA4 was the strip club mission. Once I got to the driving/chasing/shooting part of that mission, I just could never complete it. Not only did I have to start the whole mission over every time, I had to drive across town to get to the damn mission. This is a huge improvement in 5 (at least so far).

At some point I am going to hope Franklin dies... How many times is he going to keep going along with Lamar's hair brained schemes? I'm beginning to think Franklin is actually the bigger idiot of the two since he just keeps going right along with him...
166  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Grand Theft Auto V on: September 18, 2013, 03:50:01 AM
The glowing reviews and finding out I had $170 in Best Buy reward zone points resulted in me unexpectedly buying this.

It does seem to look a bit better than 4. I don't really notice any big differences in the driving. I don't really have much empathy for any of the characters yet, unlike Nico. I do like that fairly early on you can pretty much drive anywhere you want, unlike in 4 where they kept you locked in one section of the city. On a drive around, I did see some awesome scenery.

Having said that, I am disappointed in this early on. Oh, the game may end up better, but a couple of the things I loved about 4 don't seem as good here:

1. The radio. I wasn't exactly a huge fan of 4's music either, but it just seems dreadful here. I need to look up the song list. I also have been disappointed in the talk radio I've heard so far. I chuckled a lot at this in 4, but thus far, I've barely cracked a smile in this one. Plus, I hate the interface for the radio. It's hard for me to tell what station I am on (it goes away too quickly) and I hate only being able to tune in one direction. BOOOO! I really wish they'd do another 80s game. I love Vice City's soundtrack.

2. It's hard to blow up cars in this game! I never finished GTA 4, as I just lost interest in doing some of the goofy missions. But, I played GTA 4 enough hours to probably get through the game a few times. The main thing I loved to do in 4 was drive around in a car, crash into a lot of other cars until it caught on fire, then try to park the car in close proximity of other cars. Then I would run from my car and watch my car blow up, and cause a chain reaction of other explosions on other cars. This always cracked me up. I swear one time I blew up around 40 cars from my car's first explosion since more and more cars kept driving up and catching on fire. This just doesn't work well in this game. So far, 2 out of the 3 times I got a car on fire, the flames simply went out and the car was dead. BOOOO! I did get one to blow up, but I had to get it seriously burning first, and I barely got out of it on time to not be blown up. Probably no big deal to most people, but seriously, this was my favorite part of GTA4. frown

Guess I will have to find new ways to have maniacal fun in this new sandbox. Maybe I'll play the main story all the way through, although I tend to suck at these missions in these games.
167  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Finally making the jump to flatscreens. Yes, finally. on: September 16, 2013, 11:17:32 AM
At your price range buy a Panasonic plasma. The low end 50" can be had for as low as $450. Even these bottom of the barrel 720p plasmas look better than the vast majority of the much more expensive LED sets you'll see. Spend a little more and you an get a 1080p plasma for well within your budget.
168  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii U] Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker remake on: September 12, 2013, 11:43:47 PM
I loved TP. I thought and think WW is great, but it had some glaring flaws, especially the excessive sailing and triforce hunt. TP I think is on par with Ocarina of Time (I probably prefer TP but OoT was more original and TP to a great extent mimics it). I have still never played Skyward Sword since I have heard so many negatives about the controls.
169  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii U] Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker remake on: September 12, 2013, 03:13:49 AM
The HD version is almost universally better... but, the bloom is overdone for me. Of course, I generally don't care for bloom effects anyway. I feel there are some scenes where the colors are a bit washed out looking on the HD one. Still for the most part, the HD version is pretty impressive. When the Wii U is cheap in a few years, I'll probably check this out again. (As I mentioned earlier, been playing the cube version the last few weeks, and it still looks great on a 60" plasma.)

(Forgive me if I posted this earlier). I really think Twilight Princess would benefit more from the HD remake than WW. The cel shaded style holds up pretty well, but TP had some seriously blurry textures that would probably look amazing cleaned up in HD. I also like TP a lot more... not that WW isn't great.

Sigh... I knew it wasn't coming but still bummed at the lack of a bigger screen size. Oddly enough I am mildly tempted by the cheap 5c. If the S4 would drop to $99 this Fall, that would create a nice dilemma for me.... Or I may just suffer with my Razr for another 6-12 months....

Nothing for me.

GTA 5.  maybe later..
Ac4. Not now. Revelations and III burned me.
Batman... After AC not willing to pay full price... Unless I hear it's more like AA.

I think the next new game I'll pick up is Thief depending on PC system requirements.

I think my tastes are drifting away from the norm somewhat, as I think this fall release slate is pitiful. I also can find zero launch games of interest for the new consoles.

The restaurant scene, the confession, and the desert scene were all incredible.  Chin hit the floor, holy shit I can't believe that happened type of awesome.  Jessie piecing together the ricin cigarette from Huele lifting his dope felt like a HUGE stretch though.

I agree 100% with this. I was grinning like a madman when hank and Marie watched the confession video. The Jesse revelation at the end was my least favorite part, and I agree seemed a stretch.

I wouldn't say no to an HD remake of twilight princess either... That might sweeten the Wii U a bit... Still way too much for me right now, even with WW bundled in.
177  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii U] Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker remake on: August 23, 2013, 01:30:36 AM
I watched some footage on gamespot and it looks very nice. I like that they have added a fast mode for sailing. I also think managing items on the pad is nice, plus they added touch screen aiming for the now and the ability to move in this mode - Zelda FPS!

Having said that, I still think the Wii U is around $100 too expensive for me, so last night I hooked up my GAMECUBE~! and fired up vanilla Wind Waker. I have all 3 "current gen" systems and none of them have my love like the cube did. It warmed the cockles of my heart to fire it up again. Wind Waker holds up VERY well graphically after all this time. Yes, 480p is a bit glaring on a 60" plasma, but the artistic style is still beautiful. The most jarring thing is how awkward the Wavebird is now. That was my favorite controller ever, but the 360 controller has converted me. Anyway, I am in the forest dungeon now, and the game is still a blast... at least until the tri-force hunt starts...

If you have a Wii U this will be a no brainer.

I've enjoyed the last two episodes but generally find season five to be far less compelling than the first 4 seasons. Part of me still thinks they should have jut quit after season four as its ending was fantastic and would have been fine as a series finale.

I am still excited to see how they end the series.

Beat akalabeth once.
Beat 1-4 too many times to remember.
Beat 5 and 6 twice.
Beat 7-9 all at least once.

Played the underworlds and worlds games but haven't beaten them.

Looking back I am amazed at how me and a buddy were able to finish many of the early ones without the Internet. I think we had clue books for 2 and 3 but I am pretty sure we just compared notes for 4 and 5.

I've replayed pretty much all of them recently (within the last five years) and they hold up pretty well - admittedly with a heavy heaping of nostalgia. Eight and nine were horrific disappointments but even they have one or two things going for them.

It makes me sad that the franchise is essentially dead and has been for over a decade. Yet another reason to love EA...

I'm all for an older Doctor.

Capaldi has actually already appeared in Doctor Who (and Torchwood) not that that means he won't get the part. (It's happened before.) I think if they hold to form, none of the predictions will prove correct. I am in the no-female camp, though great female actress would trump mediocre male actor.
193  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii U on: August 01, 2013, 02:16:13 AM
I read that at the non discounted price they are still selling at here in the US Nintendo is still selling it at a loss. So I doubt a much needed price drop is coming soon, although it would seem like they have to lower it for the PS4/XBone launch. But, as others keep noting what it really needs is games.

I loved the Wii for its first year or so, but then the games really dried up for me. Them releasing subpar metroid and Zelda games after 2 initially great ones has left me very skeptical of the new system - along with it being underpowered... And overpriced. I think it also has a bit of an identity crisis. Is it an HD Wii or is it about the new gamepad controller?

I'd love a GameCube 2 which is small, super powered and costs less than the competitors by being nothing but a high powered game machine with wireless recharging Wavebird controllers. That would rock.

Maybe this will lead to an HD remake of ED or at least an eshop/vc release

I would buy an ED HD remake on the spot regardless of which console I had to buy!

I've been trudging through Voyager for months now. I am on the last season but have been derailed by finally watching Blakes 7 for the first time. (Spoiler, it's much better than Voyager.) I am about mid way through the last season of Voyager. It has been a bumpy ride to say the least. They do sprinkle in just enough good episodes to keep me interested (and there have even been a few great ones here and there), but the writing and acting for some of the primary cast members is so inferior to TNG and ESPECIALLY DS9. It's amazing how much more continuity and character development DS9 got than the other Trek shows. I still need to give Enterprise a try at some point, but probably not until 2014 at the earliest....

It seems strange that Respawn is releasing a version of Titanfall for the 360 too.  I don't remember a developer ever doing that during a new console generation launch.  They normally go all in with the new generation of consoles.  I'm sure they know there will be side by side comparisons between XB1 and 360 versions.  I would think they would want the difference to be huge, to encourage more XB1 sales, and to validate new XB1 purchases, but at the same time they don't want to make a crappy 360 port.

Nintendo did it with Twilight Princess.

It seemed to me that Nintendo did it for just about everything...  It seems that the only thing that ever came out on the Wii were GC ports, at lease initially.  Man, I do t miss the days of that being the only console I owned...

I own the Wii, PS3, and the 360 and I loved the GameCube more than all of them combined...

Though the ps3 is a great media machine....
