Oh and the 780 is still a titan (no pun intended) of a card. (Even if it's not a Titan.)

If it makes you feel better I am still rocking a geforce 460 on my six year old gaming pc! I had to get a new power supply for it today. Hopefully I can carry it over to a new pc i want to build next year. At least the new PS is much less noisy! I was stunned how quiet it was when taking Bioshock Infinite for a test spin.
3  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Another video card question on: September 15, 2014, 09:01:18 PM
For September in your price point, Tom's recommends the GeForce 750 Ti as noted above. This one is nice if you have an OEM PC, since it's friendly with low end power supplies and does not require a power supply connection (in almost all of its variances).

For $150, this month, Tom's recommends the AMD R7 265 which out performs the GeForce 750 Ti.

Not until you have another job. Going through the job hunt should help you confirm that your working conditions are really that bad... or perhaps make you realize it could be worse.

Either way, I would never quit without having another job offer.
8  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii U on: July 03, 2014, 07:00:16 PM
So, last weekend I finally got to actually play with a Wii U for the first time. I came away very impressed. The controller is pretty comfortable and the screen is cool (though it was pretty ridden with fingerprints). I thought Mario Kart was just stunningly gorgeous. Is it true that if you transfer a Wii VC game then it can't be played remotely on the controller? That is QUITE lame if true. Still, I could see me putting this in the living room and using remote play of VC and other titles to make sitting through my wife's TV shows more tolerable. (Better yet would be a controller update which extends the range so I could hook it up in my basement but use the controller up in the living room...)

I would say this thing is a price drop and good Metroid/Zelda away from me being really tempted. I have almost given up all hope on this "new" gen since there is nothing on the horizon for the PS4/XB1 that I am interested in that can't be played on the PC. But, maybe I'll be suckered into yet another Nintendo console.

I'm happy and agree with Microsoft dumping Kinect. It has changed me from a "never buying" to a weak "maybe one day buying" an XBone. I think the lineups for all 3 consoles are so weak right now, even accounting for the earliness of the PS4/XBone lives to date.

I'm happy that the XBone is an option now since my buddy has one and loans me lots of 360 games. I am just in gaming doldrums now. There is no officially announced title that I am anticipating.
10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Orbis. aka PlayStation 4? The rumors are put to rest. on: May 14, 2014, 04:44:17 PM
I remember when a buddy showed me Rogue Leader on his brand new GameCube, I was blown away by how much better it looked than anything I had seen before on a PC. That's the first time I ever thought consoles surpassed pcs graphically.
11  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: When do you buy games? on: May 01, 2014, 12:06:47 AM
I used to be a day 1 (or near day1) buyer for the games I was psyched about, but lately not so much.

I did buy thief 4 early since it was 20% off from GMG.

Right now, I am aware of no forthcoming games that I would buy on release day.

how could you possibly see that?  paranoid?  seems odd.  they didn't say nobody gets loot unless they bought the expansion.

They've reduced loot drops in the main game and increased them in content that is expansion only. Seems like a logical inference to me.

Agree Hetz, I played D1 a bit, didn't touch D2, but Hearthstone and the forum effect has made me all over D3 when it comes to PS4.   Can't wait...

You'd be better off playing diablo 2 in the interim. The loot patch improves 3 a lot and it's a lot of fun, but Diablo 2 is a better game.

17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/XB1/PS4/360/PS3] Thief on: March 16, 2014, 04:43:04 PM
Just finished. I had an extremely long review in my head ready to type up, but really the Zero Punctuation review nails it. My only real difference of opinion is that I enjoyed this game much more than he did despite everything in the ZP review being 100% correct.

I think the low reviews are quite warranted. But if it's a 6/10 game, it's at least a fun 6/10 game for people like me who want more Thief 1-2 and can't get it, but can still enjoy bland substitutes for what they are.

I have discovered over the past few years that I am starting to hate open world games except in RPGs and GTA like games. First the Batman Arkham series has been ruined by it, and now (and before in Thief 3) Thief. FUCK CITY SECTIONS. If you want to allow us to explore the city, put a fucking mission in it. Don't make me traipse through the same sections over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over (and over) again. Especially when it means I get fewer missions.

And, while I found the new voice actor for Garret acceptable in the missions, he was at times awful in the (awful) cut scenes. There was no good reason not to bring Stephen Russel back unless he didn't want to besmirch himself by playing such a mediocre characterization of Garret. The story in this game was by far the least interesting.

Thank goodness for The Dark Mod! Thief with a graphical upgrade that doesn't have small, linear missions!

(Seriously, I did like the game, but it's a distant 4th in the series. Behind the 3rd which was a distant 3rd in the series.)

Yes I saw one of these at best buy this week. I thought it looked pretty sharp, and that's coming from someone with no interest in titanfall.

I really don't have any dog in any console war since I am sitting comfortably on the sidelines, but I think any comparison between XB1 and PS4 monthly sales is meaningless until the PS4 is as readily available as the XB1. I haven't seen a PS4 anywhere in weeks.

I don't think it's meaningless for the simple reason that the PS4 outsold the XB1 2:1 in January, yet one would presume it was just as scarce then (if not scarcer).

(Shrugs) I can't possibly comment on whether or not the ps4 was more or less supply constrained in the US in February vs January. What I do know is that the xbox one was not supply constrained in February and the ps4 was. I am not in any way implying that the xbox one is doing poorly, but comparing sales of it to the ps4 is silly when ps4s are hard to find and xbox ones are not.

The Wii U actually did "180%" better than last year. Which I am guestimating means it sold somewhere around 150k-180k. I guess people really wanted a new Donkey Kong country game...?  confused

I also use the older version of the rocketfish system, and it works fine. However I am not sure if that will be viable with a HTIB. A lot of those have more "custom" speaker connections.

Tilt, let me know if you get through chapter 3 (and get all of the loot) without focus (and without cheating). I am in there now, and I have no idea how you could possibly get a specific collectible without focus vision.

I am finding more issues with this game as I go on, (On chapter 3 so far) primarily with the quality of the mission/level design, but still having a lot of fun with it. I will hold off going into details until I finish the game.

I have had a similar experience with my DS Lite lately. I got my wife the 3DS animal crossing game for her birthday a month ago, and have never seen my 3DS since. For a while I was playing some stuff on the DS Lite. Like yours, it hadn't been on for years and yet still had a charge. I am also struck by how much lighter and more comfortable it is in comparison to the 3DS XL. On the downside, the screen is TINY! It is without a doubt a great little machine.
29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/XB1/PS4/360/PS3] Thief on: February 26, 2014, 04:10:06 AM
I'm enjoying it. Playing on Master difficulty for now, since I figure I would play the game as designed before turning things off to make it more like the originals. I am pleasantly surprised. It definitely still feels like Thief. I generally have found Master difficulty too easy, so far, but finally in chapter 2 I am encountering situations that aren't trivial to get past. I think the new guy doing Garret is adequate, but there really was zero reason not to use Stephen Russel. I certainly don't buy the motion capture excuse they gave. I think, so far, the mission design pales in comparison to the earlier games. They are very linear and merely offer multiple paths down the same linear path.

I am THRILLED that the game does actually have true Quicksave/Quickload functionality. I do wish they would let us have multiple save slots, but one true save anywhere slot is better than not having it. I was worried when it wouldn't let me save in the prologue, but once I got past that, I have been able to save whenever I want.

So far, I am finding navigating the city between story missions to be much more engaging than in Thief 3. I like the short little missions you can do in the city. I am also finding it bigger, and more fun that Thief 3 to this point. I hope that it doesn't get tiresome as I trek through it repeatedly which was a big issue with Thief 3.

My biggest regret so far in regards to early purchase decisions is that I didn't buy the wrench right away. Lots, and lots of opportunities to use it so far that I haven't been able to take advantage of.

I am playing this on the PC with a system that's barely above min requirements. The benchmark menu option gave me avg 20 fps, max 30 fps, but generally looked much more choppy than I have found the game to actually play so far. So, I am pleased with that. I generally took all the default graphic options with the exception of bumping the resolution up to 1080p and dumping the shadows down a notch. I think the game looks nice, but nothing mind blowing, but I am sure I am not seeing it in all its glory due to my modest, aging system.

The only real glitch I had today was a constant crash when I tried to perform the first (mandatory ) pick-pocket. Thankfully, updating my video drivers resolved this.

So, generally I feel positive about this so far, even if I don't think it will surpass or reach the glory of  the originals. I'll reserve final judgements until I complete the campaign.

I have enjoyed all 3 Bioshock games, with the first being my favorite. But, the "shock" game that makes me mourn for Irrational more than any other is still System Shock 2. It took me a while to get over how different Bioshock was from that game when I first got it. I appreciate it for its own merits, but I still long for a true System Shock 3, which will likely never happen or be a pale imitation like I hope the new Thief is not.

I didn't mean to imply the writing is poor... far from it. But, the plots are far less engaging than the characters, dialog, and scenery (for me).

Did they? I liked how they left that ambiguous, but I left that thinking he was a fraud.
