1  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4, XB1, and PC] Mass Effect Andromeda Will Release In Q1 2017 on: April 12, 2017, 09:55:02 PM
(After vowing not to buy this until hit hit the bargain bin, I actually bought this around 2 days after release. I am weak...)

Finished the main story line.

On the plus side, it has a good ending, and I don't want to murder the writers like I did after the last game. It was also mostly fun - this is the key thing. My criticisms are much longer than my praises, but it was always mostly fun. The combat was way better and much more fun than in previous entries. Bioware doesn't really make true RPGs anymore, so why not just make the combat all action? I was down with that. I liked not having to micro-manage my party's inventory - especially after how hideous that was in DA:I. It was satisfying fixing the climates on planets and building outposts for colonies (I was disappointed with how few times I actually ended up doing that when I realized I wasn't going anymore places that needed it.) The planet where you couldn't leave the Nomad (The Nomad was roughly a billion times better than the Mako.) was beautiful and fun to explore - but there wasn't enough to do or see there. Clearly added late in the game. The main story quests were mostly fun, and were the funnest missions to play.

On the negative side, the premise is excellent, but the plot overall falls flat. It has its moments, but I was never as engaged as in the first trilogy. Also too many elements were similar to the original plot. Another lost ancient super powerful alien race leaving its tech behind? Really, no other ideas? The companions were nowhere near as interesting in this game and some were flat out annoying. Gil can go straight to Hell. The animations are definitely bad as were the PLASTIC DEMON DOLL EYES!!! AHHH! (The eyes got improved in a patch.) There were times I found some of the Remnant vaults tedious. Flip this button before that one. Flip this one nowhere near the area it affects. bah. The crafting and equipment management was tedious, requiring me to spend too much time navigating menus - just like DA:I (this is why it was good I didn't have to equip all of my companions). Inventory management was very frustrating before the patch where I was always full and not really clear on what I could do without to empty it. (For me the patch completely eliminated this problem.) The Nexus felt like there wasn't enough to it compared to the Citadel. No wonder they kept all these people sleeping. The unskippable spaceship cut scenes were beyond annoying - seeing them over and over again. The patch only made a small dent in this. The quality of side quests is highly variable with not many ways to determine the good from the bad. The constant planet/galaxy hopping for a single quest (yay more unskippable space ship cut scenes) got on my nerves. Like all open world(s) games, too much walking/running/driving around looking for shit including trying to figure out where on the mountain this waypoint is and how the fuck do I get up there anyway? Only 2 new alien races after travelling that far?! The main story quests were fun - but man I wish there were more of them. It felt like there was too much meaningless filler questing at the expense of main plot driven quests. Going to bed with bleeding eyes every night because they won't let me adjust the font size. After the patch SAM kept telling me I had more Email when I didn't have any fucking email! Speaking of SAM - SHUT UP! SAM talks WAY TOO MUCH in this game. There were times where I shuddered every time that know it all interjected itself into conversations.

Also, let me get this straight. There is an AI whose main CPU is sitting on a spaceship docked in the Nexus. Yet, no matter where I go in whatever solar system, he can always immediately process whatever I experience and give me instant feedback on it. OK, I will go with that.... But, I can't get fucking email without going back to my spaceship?! I have more easy access to my email in the present real world than in the made up world where there are faster than light drives?! SERIOUSLY?! Why can't I board the ship (to check emails) WITHOUT LEAVING THE PLANET and enduring more unskippable cut scenes?!?!

Still, the game was fun overall. A solid 7-7.5/10 game that is fun enough to make its irritations palatable. Very poor by Bioware standards, but still fun, and Bioware clearly isn't the same studio it used to be (HELLO EA!!!!!)....

I'm sure I'll be in for the sequel. If I couldn't last more than a couple days after release even with me still boiling over the terrible ending to the first 3 games, I am sure I will be ready for another in a few years...
2  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Netflix] Iron Fist on: March 21, 2017, 07:58:51 PM
I also finished Iron Fist. I liked it and put it generally on par with the other Marvel series.

I would rank them as:

Jessica Jones - (by far the best for me)
Luke Cage - (this was neck and neck with JJ for me until the stinking turd of a final episode.)
Daredevil/Iron Fist - I rank these pretty much on par with each other as I think these shows are very similar - in fact a bit too similar. When Iron Fist was at the docks I was wondering when he would bump into Daredevil as it felt like I was watching a rerun of Daredevil. Daredevil probably has greater highs (Hello Fisk!.. more intense, violent fighting) but also lower lows (I think the guy playing Daredevil is by far the worst lead actor on any of the series - mainly during the day as the lawyer where he looks like he's reading lines off a screen on his glasses.) Iron Fist's biggest flaw was that it felt too much like Daredevil except more kung fu with a less interesting hero. But still very similar. I may be in the minority but I enjoyed the character played by Faramir - he was probably the most interesting character on the show. If you like the fighting a lot on Daredevil I understand the feeling that Iron Fist on average seems like a pale imitation. Having said that, I thought IF had some really fun fights particularly in the last few episodes. Another character I enjoyed on IF was Ward - the guy playing him was terrific. A much more interesting character than Oggy and True Blood chick from DD - both of whom had subplots that I had no interest in.

Keep in mind, I am not a comic guy at all. Even when I was a kid I was a casual comic book kid, mainly only reading Spiderman. I was by no means a collector.

In any event, I have enjoyed all the Marvel series so far and am pretty excited to see the Defenders! I would say none of the Netflix series have ever been as bad or annoyed me as much as Iron Man 2 did! smile
3  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Netflix] Iron Fist on: March 21, 2017, 01:11:51 AM
I have watched 11 eps. I like it fine. I think all of the marvel series are flawed but entertaining and this one is no different. It definitely starts a bit slow, but I don't get why people crap all over the fight scenes. They seem fine to me. I do think the second half has been better than the first. Looking forward to finishing it and really looking forward to the defenders.
4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4, XB1, and PC] Mass Effect Andromeda Will Release In Q1 2017 on: March 20, 2017, 12:44:41 PM
The RPS posts coupled with the Gamespot and Eurogamer reviews have shuffled this off to the bargain bin for me. This doesn't bother me much since I am STILL bitter over the ending to ME 3. I would like to pretend I will boycott the series forever over that hideous betrayal of an ending, but I know I am weak and will eventually keep suckling off the Bioware teat - no matter how sour the milk is sometimes... (Apologies for the image...)
5  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Release date 3/3/2017 on: March 03, 2017, 12:58:42 PM
The reviews have only made me more skeptical, as some of those game mechanics don't sound good to me.

The amazing thing to me about this game is that it is released for the new Nintendo system AND the previous Nintendo system, and it is virtually impossible to buy either system! This tickles me for some reason...
6  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nintendo Switch - the NX unveiled on: January 14, 2017, 02:42:30 PM
Finally did a bit of reading about it this morning. The launch lineup is pathetic. The (paid) online service sounds horrid. It looks like this will have even less 3rd party support than the Wii U. In the UK it costs significantly more than the PS4/XB1. I can't imagine why any Wii U owner would buy this at launch. Only 2.5 guaranteed hours of battery life?

I still think the idea for it is interesting, but this has fail written all over it.

It's the opposite. Live TV ala sling or PlayStation Vue.

Eurogamer is reporting that the new Zelda will not be ready in time for the Switch launch.
9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nintendo Switch - the NX unveiled on: October 21, 2016, 06:11:50 PM
I loved the NES/SNES during my teens through college, and I adored the Gamecube which was criminally underappreciated (or at least "under-purchased"), so I have a bit of a soft spot for Nintendo. Having said that, the Wii was a disaster for me after the launch window, and the Wii U still doesn't have enough games I want to justify picking it up - in fact 2 of the main things I want to play on it are just HD remasters. The 3DS I bought was mostly a mistake. I bought it when I was traveling a lot for work, but almost immediately after buying it that traveling mostly ended. I did absolutely love A Link Between Worlds and had a lot of fun with the (older) Fire Emblem game that came out for it. But, mostly it has collected dust. With all that said, after thinking about this new system, I think their move to combine a portable and home console may have some merit.

Now that they have combined their portable and home gaming developers into just one group of Switch developers, it should be easier for them to keep a more steady stream of new games. This also means that going forward if you like Nintendo first party games, you only need one device to play all of them. That actually makes the price more palatable - and I still expect it to be higher than it should be since they apparently won't sell it at a loss. As everyone says whenever any new Nintendo console comes out (since the cube), the question now is: Did they make it easy and appealing for 3rd party developers to code for it? Also, what are the Virtual Console and/or backwards compatibility capabilites? Can we finally own games based on account that go from device to device?

One other point. Competing head to head with Sony/MS has shrunk their market share with the Wii U. Also, the 3DS, while broadly considered a success is hurting badly against more ubiquitous portable devices (smartphones/tablets). With this device they don't have to win against either of those 2 markets. They just need to get a decent chunk out of BOTH markets combined. This seems like something that might be possible, or at least more possible than competing with the markets 1 on 1 with 2 separate devices.

I still don't know if I want one of these things, but I have more interest than I ever had in the Wii U.

10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nintendo Switch - the NX unveiled on: October 20, 2016, 06:16:59 PM
Price price price price... it's all about the price. I fear it will be too high like the Wii U.

Harrumph, the wave bird was a fantastic controller, so they CAN do it. I liked the pro controller much more than the 2 sides slotted into that thing.

11  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: No Man's Sky $51 at GMG on: August 20, 2016, 12:18:34 PM

12  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / No Man's Sky $51 at GMG on: August 18, 2016, 01:52:12 AM
Green Man Gaming has this for $50.99 for a "limited time". You must login to see the sale price. Still a bit too much for me (I think?) as I still have doubts I'll play it more than a day or two. But I am thinking about it.

14  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PC] a Metroid 2 remake on: August 09, 2016, 12:17:29 AM

This is an amazing Metroid Zero Mission like remake of Metroid 2. Of course Nintendo has already issued a cease and desist and the developer has taken it down. However, it is not even remotely hard to find as the cat is already out of the bag so to speak. If Nintendo is smart they would buy this from the developer and port it to the 3DS, Wii U, Nintendo NX, and any other hardware they may come up with. In fact they should release it as is for the PC as well. Highly recommended.

As an owner of the original game and since Nintendo was too stupid to make a Zero Mission sequel, I don't feel qualms about posting this. But if I am violating a forum rule, moderators feel free to edit/delete with my apologies.

I am loving it.  It took me awhile to get back into the Doom grove but they have captured the feel so well.  Just like in the old game I run around the map killing everything and then start looking for the secrets.  I don't have to worry about enemies respawning, or missing something because I can't go back.

My kind of shooter.

Be careful. At the end of one of the levels ( I think it was the foundry) you are blocked from going back at the very end of the level.(before you hit the exit button). Granted you can replay it, but the you have to kill everything again.
16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DOOM on: May 13, 2016, 11:55:01 AM
The early, first impressions, Steam reviews are pretty positive. I am oddly excited for this considering I am a lukewarm, at best, Doom fan. I'll admit it. Part of me wants this just because it looks like this has Metroid Prime style space jumping.

18  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4/XB1/PC] Batman: Arkham Knight (Rocksteady Returns) on: May 08, 2016, 08:54:37 PM
So, I finally said enough is enough and quit this fucking game and watched the Arkham Knight reveal (I had figured it out, not that I'm bragging - it was pretty obvious) and the final boss and final final scene (I thought the ending was great). I think Rocksteady must be employed by incompetents. How could they possibly think that the batmobile parts needed to be such a huge part of the game?! It was so ridiculously UNFUN and DIFFICULT even when dialing the actual difficulty down to Easy, that I just couldn't take anymore. I am sure I eventually would have gotten past the latest frustrating blood pressure rising batmobile obstacle with enough retries, but I have just had enough. It's not fun and too frustrating. I am too damn old and don't have enough video game time to force myself to keep finishing a game that irritates more than it entertains.

For the record, post patching it ran just fine and looked beautiful on my PC.

Thumbs way up for the cool ending to Batman.

Thumbs a billion miles down to the pits of hell for such a shitty (playing) concluding game to a mostly great gaming series.

(To be honest I still think Arkham Asylum is, by far, the best game. I'll take Metroidvania over open world any day.)

Yes I own that. But an HD remake would be even better. Better enough for me to triple dip on the trilogy!
20  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Nintendo NX Console - aka Super Nintendo 2 on: April 27, 2016, 11:29:22 PM
I'm also in the camp that hopes the NX is backwards compatible. The only thing I really want the Wii U for is the HD Zelda remakes. I really wish they would give the Metroid Prime trilogy an HD rerelease.

I wish Nintendo would stop trying to come up with some new gimmick for every console, and just produce one kick-ass dedicated gaming system. It doesn't have to be high end hardware either - they've proven they can make great looking games without massive amounts of horsepower. Just make a lean, mean, Mario/Zelda machine with normal controllers and media. I'd be all over it.

That's basically what the GameCube was. I absolutely loved mine and I haven't loved any console as much since. (The 360 was close.) But, it was ultimately a failure and the Wii wasn't. I would personally love to see them go this route, but I am skeptical.

Let me admit that most of the metal discussion in this thread diverges greatly with my tastes. However, due to this thread I did decide to check out and subsequently purchase Amorphis, Under a red cloud. I haven't listened to Amorphis for two decades as they never quite clicked for me, but this album is fantastic. I've listened to some Skyforger too which also sounds promising. Thanks for getting me to revisit the band and check out their newer material.

I have bowed out of this "new" gen after owning all 3 of the last gen, but that doesn't stop me from having opinions of the current consoles.

I am mystified at how expensive the Wii U is. Well I know that the game pad is the reason, but I still think its ridiculously overpriced for a console that is good for nothing but playing Nintendo games and virtually no third party support. I also can't fathom that the console will be three years old without a Zelda or Metroid game.

The Xbox One has the absolute god awful worst interface I have ever used. It's just terrible. I remember spending a ton of time just trying to find settings. The original 360 interface was SO GREAT. Even the vastly inferior current 360 interface is navigable. I absolutely loathed my limited experience with the One,

Getting back on topic, I think Sony is bat shit crazy to stubbornly stick to a controller that all but about 4 people think is vastly inferior to the Xbox ones from the last 2 generations. WE WANT THE LEFT STICK HIGHER! I really wish Sony would make an official alternative controller which I expect would crush their dual shock styled one in sales and make them see sense. I might  have been tempted buy the PS4 at one point if I just had the option of another controller type.

Oh well, enjoying having a proper up to date gaming PC again which has better graphics, cheaper games, mouse and keyboard, and 360 controller support and still works on my plasma and surround sound.
27  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Winders 10 and gamin' on: July 31, 2015, 11:07:26 AM
I upgraded last night. It was mostly painless although there was a scary period where my monitor was sleeping for an extended period and I feared something may have gone wrong... (It hadn't.) I had heard lovely stories about not having to reinstall drivers, but that wasn't true for me as I had to reinstall drivers for video, mouse and my knockoff 360 wireless receiver. I suppose I ought to reinstall my chipset drivers as well.

So far all my applications, games, and files seem in tact, I upgraded from 8. I would instead say that 10 looks like 8 with a bit of proper Windows put back in, or what Windows 8 should have been. 8 is actually an awesome OS with a terrible interface that no one asked for. 10 remedies the interface in a big way. I am concerned about all the hidden aspects of Micrososft turning Windows into a "service". I am excited about what a lot of articles have written about the benefits of DX12 once games start using it.

Windows will let you "go back" for 30 days if you wish. I also used a free 10 to 8 backup utility recommended by CNet, although I doubt I'll need it at this point.

I played Witcher 3 last night and noticed no differences.

29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/XB1/Ps3/Ps4] Dragon Age: Inquisition on: April 04, 2015, 02:17:15 AM
After around 100 hours, I finished this today. I must say the final boss battle was very anti-climactic and frankly pushover easy. At level 23 I had plenty of fights that were still challenging, but this one I barely used any potions on.

The most interesting thing about the ending was the post credits sequence which leaves a lot of interesting questions and (I assume) will set things up well for DA4.

I have mixed feelings about the shift to the "open world" areas. I think the whole open world thing is a trend I would like to see "un-trended" soon. It's undeniably fun in many games, but I grow weary of seemingly every game incorporating it. I think it takes away from actual level design. I loved all the hand crafted dungeons from DA1 and there were hardly any of them in this game. There was also a lot less main quest content in this game compared to the predecessors. On the other hand, I can't deny I had a lot of fun with this game. It's just hard for me to let go of the vastly superior first game.

Anyway still a thumbs up overall, and it restored a tiny amount of faith in Bioware after having buckets of rotten manure dumped on me during the ending of ME3.

Two thoughts:

Watch the new series. While it is different due to the time it is made in, it is fundamentally the same show, and it is made by die hard fans of the original series.

If you are a life long fan, I strongly suggest you google "Big Finish Productions" and open yourself up to a giant era of "classic Who" that is still being made. The tv show both past and present is my all time favorite, but Big Finish has made some of the absolute best Doctor Who, ever. And yes they have stories with Tom Baker and Louise Jameson (Leela).

Apple Pay is pretty interesting. It's actually using old (not EMV) contactless card technology. It was never highly adopted here, but many PIN pads in the wild already support it (from a hardware perspective). It's basically using old tech in a slightly more advanced (secure) way (tokenization). It's a shrewd way for Apple to get wide acceptance of their payment without forcing merchants to upgrade hardware.

Chip card (EMV) deadline for financial institutions is October 2015. After that, the onus of fraud losses shifts to them.  Even if not everyone makes it by then, they'll be moving forward on it.

This is not correct. The shift of liability is going to the issuers who continue to issue non-EMV cards, and the merchants/retailers who do not accept EMV cards. Trust me that there will be plenty in both category who aren't hitting that deadline.

That can't be good news of Microsoft.

I dunno. 40 percent is waaaay better than what has been estimated based on public statements by the two companies so far. When the PS4 reached the 10 million mark, the Xbox One was supposedly still just past 5. This 40% number confuses me in light of that, as this would have required the Xbox One to have sold considerably more than the PS4 worldwide since this summer, which I strongly doubt that it did.

No it wouldn't. All that would be required is that the XBone get outsold by a smaller ratio to reduce the percentage to 40%. Given that they are now the same price I would be amazed if that didn't happen.

Edited to correct my silly percentage error.

Finally got to look at and hold both an iPhone 6 and 6 plus (tethered). I came away very impressed. God the 6 plus is huge, then again I have generally found all phones with screens beyond the 5" mark to be ludicrously big. But anyway, both felt nice in the hand, and both were impressively thing. Both screens looked great. Now that Apple FINALLY has an acceptable screen size, if I were due for an upgrade I would seriously consider making the switch to an iPhone and seeing how I liked it and how much if at all I would miss the flexibility and foibles of Android. As it is I am still quite happy with my one year old HTC One that I bought for $50. My wife will be getting the iPhone 6 (upgrading from 5) near the end of the year.

At this point it's my aging PC.

So far, I think the PS4 and XB1 are both overpriced junk. I see only a marginal improvement graphically over their predecessors. Almost all of their games come out for the PC and are pretty much better on the PC. I have never given a shit about Sony's exclusives and so far don't care at all about any MS exclusives. While a gaming PC costs MUCH more than these consoles, the games are always cheaper plus I can replay all my old favorites or older games I never got around to playing long ago. I very rarely play online multiplayer, but if I do, I don't have to pay a ludicrous fee to do it.

I am also growing further disillusioned with and moving away from what most of the big studios are doing these days. I loved Skyrim and always have fun with (but never finish) the GTA games, but I generally think the open world game is ruining video games. Good level design is being tossed aside in favor of the open world. I thought the Batman Arkham series was completely ruined by the switch to open world. AA had such perfectly crafted areas, and I felt like AC was so hollow. When I tried to start the 3rd one as soon as I got out of Blackgate I didn't want to continue it.

At launch the PS4 and XB1 were inferior media devices to their predecessors. Have either added DLNA streaming yet?

I assume I will probably get a Wii U at some point, since I believe it will eventually have around 5-10 games or so I will want to play that I can't play anywhere else. But, I will definitely not pay $300 for one.

I suppose it's possible I might get an XB1 or PS4 if I can't ever fit building a new PC into the budget. I do miss gaming more comfortably with a big screen, but I may consider a Steam Box-ish PC for that.
