Picked it up and gave it a spin at lunch today. The gameplay is definitely more Dishonored, but I don't really have any connection to this new character - at leas not yet.

I don't think this is really a spoiler, but just in case... (very beginning of DLC opening cutscene spoiler)

Spoiler for Hiden:
They show you a cut scene of the character you play in this DLC killing the Empress (at the beginning of the proper Dishonored game). I find it an absolutely STUPID decision that they didn't have you PLAY this section of the game....

Michael Madsen is fine as the main character's voice... This guy's not a mute like Corvo.

7  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Windows 8 - 10/26/2012! on: April 12, 2013, 02:09:30 AM
PC sales are tanking and windows 8 is taking the blame.

PC hardware sales down 14% in first quarter

Time to get windows 9 out! I'm not at all surprised. Consolidating you market leading desktop os with your phone/tablet os which is just tanking in the market isn't a good idea? Wow!

I have 8 on my gaming pc, and while I don't have problems, it certainly adds nothing. I don't ever use metro, and the thing defintely does not boot up any quicker than 7 did. On a desktop pc, a mouse and keyboard is just much more intuitive and accurate. Duh...

Yeah, we have issues with audio dropping out on AirPlay as well. I have a couple of different airplay devices that we've tried and the behavior is the same. In our case, the wifi in the house is handled by a couple of airport base stations, which I think are the problem.

I tend to blame the drops on AirPlay itself (the protocol) more than the actual devices. As I said earlier, I tend to have better luck with (much) older versions of iTunes running on XP with not having these. I know at one point streaming to an Airport Express connected via ethernet cable (wireless disabled) I still got periodic audio drops. Ridiculous. I know the fidelity is superior to Blutooth streaming, but man it sure is finicky.

The only PC in the house that hasn't had the audio drops is my wife's Mac... although that's a limited sample size as we have had it for less than a year and haven't used it much for streaming. I know from years of reading apple forums on the Airport Express that the Mac is not immune to the drops...

Ironically, last night's failure, seemed to finally be fixed today by my rebooting my main streaming PC. Of course last night I couldn't stream from a different PC either, and it streamed OK today without a reboot... Sigh... that is how my adventures with Air Play have gone lo these many years...
9  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Airport Express - a decade or so of Hell on: April 06, 2013, 06:11:22 PM
I finally got AirPlay working again today, but now I am suffering from intermittent drops in audio. I usually can only fix that by installing an older version of iTunes.

11  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Airport Express - a decade or so of Hell on: April 06, 2013, 03:49:53 AM
I am not sure this is really a call for help so much as it is a rant.

I own many Apple products, and I have been happy with most of them. My wife has an iMac and she loves it... I have had issues getting certain things to work for her consistently, but for the most part it's fine, and most importantly it makes here happy. We both have iPads (LOVE THEM). My wife has an iPhone 5. (She LOVES it!) I have owned 2 iPods (both great). My wife has owned three (She loves them). But there is one Apple product I have owned for close to a decade and it has brought me nearly nothing but frustration.... the Airport Express.

I use this thing for one purpose: to stream music from iTunes to a stereo. It has been 8-10 years of frustration. It's not like the thing simply refuses to work... Oh no, that would be simple. I would simply get rid of it. No, it will work, but it never works consistently. I have used this thing with multiple routers, streaming from multiple pcs, in multiple HOUSES, and for a while it works, but it will invariably fail (or work poorly) requiring me to set it up from scratch... AGAIN... which usually requires me to configure the damn thing about 4-10 times (EXACTLY THE SAME WAY EACH TIME) and then miraculously on the 9th or 10th time it works.... for a week or two. And then I am back at it again.

My WiFi network is just fine. I have a Wii, XBox 360, PS3, 2 iPads, my wife's iMac, my wife's iPhone, my Android phone, two Nintendo DSes, an iPod Touch... ALL of them connect with no problems... But the Airport Express has problems.

Perhaps despite the fact that EVERY OTHER FUCKING DEVICE connects to the WiFi without issue, MAYBE there is something wrong with my WiFi setup. FINE~! I have set it up to run via a straight ethernet cable connection to the router (MULTIPLE ROUTERS)... I STILL have problems with this piece of shit. It will work for a while.... and then it stops.

In my new house, I am back to trying to use this thing wirelessly. It is literally plugged in about 10 FEET from my router. I can connect to it, and configure it just fine with the Airport Utility... but try to stream music to it?! Surely you jest!

Google solutions for the Airport Express, and you will have approximately 1 billion hits of people complaining about the thing, with about 900 million foolproof (and totally different) solutions that ABSOLUTELY SOLVE THE PROBLEM. Except for me.

I haven't even begun to discuss the times where the damned thing actually DOES work, but depending on which PC you are streaming from, you get a periodic audio drop for a second every couple of minutes. I notice these drops tend to happen on post XP versions of Windows. (Although it sometimes happens with XP as well.) So far, my wife's iMac is the only PC I have owned since I bought the Express that has never had an audio drop out... when it works at all.

Anyway, I am really not trying to ask for help here, as there is no help for this thing. It was working fine a week or two ago, and I decided I would listen to some music late tonight after my wife went to bed, and of course the thing isn't working. LED light is GREEN, I can read it and update it with the Aiport utility, but I get about 1/10th of a second of audio, followed by many seconds of silence, repeat....

Thanks for letting me rant.... Go about your business.....

I do look forward to playing it again knowing everything that you know when you finish. (But not in 1999 mode. Fuck, normal was difficult enough for me...)

I don't think it's silly at all. The playstation controller is just awful. I can't believe the PS4 is still going to have the damn left analog stick where it's been since the original dual shock. The only PS controller I ever liked was the original PS1 controller that had no analog sticks. Back then the "gamepad" was the primary movement controller, and thus it was in the proper place. Now that analog sticks are the primary movement controller it should be up there where the D-pad used to be. Everyone seems to understand this except apparently Sony. Oh and I guess the new Wii U "pro" controller is like this too. Well, Nintendo used to understand this anyway. smile

Finished. As I feared I didn't really like the ending (though there were cool parts to it). I feared 2 things about the ending/story when I was about a third in, and sadly I was right on both counts.

BIG ending spoilers. Don't read if you haven't finished....
Spoiler for Hiden:
I figured after the first jump to another world, that the story would end up being confusing/incomprehensible and to some extent that's still how I feel. Perhaps I am just a simpleton. I guess I'll see if people have figured it all out or not, if it even can be explained. I also figured I was going to find out that I was Comstock. Sigh... I did think it was neat when we went to Rapture.

I don't HATE the ending or anything. I am certainly not livid about it like I was with the Mass Effect ending. Just thinking about Mass Effect still pisses me off.

I think that most people will really like the story and ending more than I do. I did think the game was great. I still would really like a System Shock sequel, as none of the Bioshocks really feel like successors or sequels to SS2 (to me at least). (If anything Dead Space feels more like System Shock 2 than Bioshock, though I think the Bioshock games are better....)

I'll be curious to see what happens next with the Bioshock series...

22  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/Ps3] Bioshock: Infinite - Impressions Incoming! Impressions pg 6 on: March 27, 2013, 03:45:26 AM
Having a lot of fun with this. Played on Very High and Ultra for a while with acceptable performance but doing better now on High settings. There are differences between all 3, but the game still looks great and my frame rate is much better. This is like parallel universe Bioshock. So many similarities, and yet so many differences (to quote the Doctor in Inferno). I don't really consider this to be scary at all, whereas the first Bioshock was at least somewhat. The combat does feel a lot more fun and frenetic.

So far, Elizabeth is just a revelation. By far the best NPC/Escort companion ever. She's an interesting enigma as a character, she doesn't get in the way (well almost never), and best of all, she's actually useful and you're glad to have her around. Fantastic.

The story/world is interesting. Looking forward to getting revelations on what's going on as the game goes on.

Two main negatives:

Let's start with the checkpoint only saves. This stinks. It's just ridiculous that in 2013 we still are putting up with garbage save systems like this. Especially given that it's worse than the predecessors. It's also annoying that the autosave happens so quickly on the PC, I usually don't notice the icon so I usually don't have a clue as to when the last save was. Now, thankfully, as noted by others, the game does warn you when the last one was taken before you quit, which is VERY nice. This makes this an annoyance rather than rage inducing. Still, not being able to save when I want, or have more than one save is quite lame.

Also, while I do think the game looks great, I really wish we could adjust or turn off the bloom. It's just too much for my tastes. I've never been a fan of the bloom effect, and this is just overpowering. There's so much bright glowing (including in darker areas) that it's just overpowering and is fatiguing on my eyes.

Anyway, already put quite a few hours into this, and looking forward to returning to Columbia tomorrow.

26  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [book] Wheel of Time 14: A Memory of Light (spoilers) on: March 24, 2013, 08:22:21 PM
Well it took me about 2.5 months to re-read the series and read the 4 books I hadn't read. I had previously read books 1-11 (many of these multiple times) and had read the shorter version of New Spring. After finishing the last Jordan book "Knife of Dreams" I vowed I was not going to touch the series again until it was finished. I decided for this final read through of the series (at least for a VERY long time) I would pick up the novel version of New Spring, so there were 4 I hadn't read. I think I read New Spring sometime after book 4-6.

Reading them back to back does really help make the slower books more tolerable. I remembered being so fed up when some of those books came out and I had diligently reread the whole series only for the plot to barely nudge forward. Here is my basic feeling on the book quality and pace:

1-3 - Awesome. The books are all great and the plot moves along well. You don't really know how big this thing is going to get, and it often feels like Book 3 will be the last book in the series.

4-6 - These are all still very high quality. The pace of the story definitely slows down - especially in book 6.

Book 7 - The slowest book to this point. From my point of view, nearly nothing happens for the first half of the book but the second half is really entertaining.

Book 8 - The slowest and worst book to this point. Very little is going on and at this point I was getting really frustrated with the series.

Book 9 - Much better. More interesting things seem to be happening here, and a big plot point is resolved.

Book 10 - Definitely the low point of the series. It just drags and absolutely nothing happens. The climax is a big anti-climax and was a huge letdown back when this came out.

New Spring - I enjoyed this a lot. The part that was added to the novel version was much better than everything else. Very glad I got this.

Book 11 - I had only read this once years ago when it first came out. I really remembered nothing about it, but I had low expectations since this is where I vowed to wait for the series to end. On this read through I actually enjoyed this quite a bit. I felt this was on par with book 9.

Books 12 - 14 - I was very pleased with this. It did feel different from the Jordan books, but things are basically flying by here. I would gather the pace would have been quick for Jordan as well, since he had planned for book 12 to be the final book. Thumbs way up for the job Sanderson did.

I really enjoyed the ending overall. I wouldn't call it perfect, but so many of these types of series end poorly, and overall this one was very well done.

(some spoilery rambles)
Spoiler for Hiden:
I was pretty surprised by Egwene dying. I half expected a big balefire event to undo it, and I am glad that didn't happen. I thought the last battle stuff was awesome. I do think it might have been a bit long, but it was all very entertaining. I actually found the Rand vs Dark One "battle" (more like discussion) to be pretty dull. The final part with Rand at the end was great however. I have mixed feelings on Rand getting Moridin's body and leaving. I was glad he didn't die, but the body swap thing seemed like a cop out, and I didn't really like him leaving everyone behind... though I guess he could Travel to see people. I too would have liked a 20 years later epilogue. Perrin sleeping for so much of the book was disappointing, and GOD it took way too long to kill Slayer. Perrin was rendered fairly impotent though the latter half of the series. I found it ironic that the end had Perrin killing Slayer after several books of them feuding, and at the same time Matt killed Fain almost as an afterthought. It says everything about why at the end Mat was my favorite character (after being my least favorite though the first 5 books) and Perrin went from my favorite after book 4 to just being tiresome by the end. I was glad they made Rand likeable again for the last couple of books. I was half way starting to root for the Dark One for a while there. And Mat (as I said) was just awesome. He was by far my favorite character by the and his exploits made me laugh out loud often. I would have loved to read more about Mat and Tuon's marriage, but it's probably a good thing that I won't. (Always leave them wanting more....) My remaining complaint about the series - Who in the HELL killed Asmodean?!?!?!?! [Edit: I see Sanderson did reveal it via clues (and the glossary). I missed it.]

This was an often frustrating series at times but I ended up really enjoying this read through, and would feel much better about recommending it to someone than I would have been before reading these last 3 books. Thumbs way up.

40  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [book] Wheel of Time 14: A Memory of Light on: January 08, 2013, 06:15:40 PM
I love (and hate) the Wheel of Time for all the same reasons other fans love (and hate) the Wheel of Time. The first 6 books are awesome, but after that things slow down a lot. I did however, think book 9 was much better than books 7 or 8. (I can't remember the titles anymore.) I started reading this around 20 years ago when I was a freshman in college. I think at the time there were 2 or 3 books out. Book 4 came out shortly after I finished reading the first 3 (within a couple years I think). With the release of books 5 - 11 I always reread the entire series in anticipation of the new books' releases. I found this to be pretty much required or I would never be able to keep up with the millions of characters who keep hanging around through these books. After book 11, I was fed up with this so I decided I was done with WoT until the final book came out - which happened today. So I haven't yet read the Sanderson books.

Today I begin re-reading the series so I can then buy the last 3 books. After I finish I plan to take a couple decades off from the series. Having said that, I am excited to see how it all ends.
