You have two too many worse.  No one can control themselves when they drink too much.  The question is are they someone who can't control themselves when they drink.

The remains have been confirmed by nuclear DNA analysis by the FBI that it is Caylee Anthony.  There is no evident trauma to the bones.  Toxicology is still outstanding.  Manner of death is homicide.  Cause is undetermined at this time and may be revised.

The Journal of the American Medical Association defines alcoholism as "a primary, chronic disease characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking."

Once a week does not meet most people's definition of "impaired control" or "preoccupation" unless he's keeping track of how many days until he can do it again.  It does not appear that there are any consequences that most people would consider "adverse."  A hangover is expected.  He is not doing serious harm to his school/work/relationships.  His thinking seems to be rather clear and considered on the subject.

I will agree that there is a spectrum to all behavioral issues and chemical dependence, it doesn't sound like he's in need of structured assistance unless or until he wants to make a change and can not.  Just because someone asks this question does not automatically that the answer is yes.

I think it can be a sign of deeper issues.  That's why it's one of the questions and not a solitary indicator.  Drinking by yourself is not in itself a danger sign just as a sore throat is not a clear indicator of a cold, merely a possible indicator that there may be more symptoms waiting to present or not yet diagnosed.

8495  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Want a Space Shuttle for the front lawn? on: December 18, 2008, 10:24:28 PM

If your organization has the right stuff, it could display one of the U.S. shuttles that NASA plans to retire from service in 2010.  The space agency sent a notice this week to museums, schools and similar institutions to gauge their interest and qualifications for properly housing Discovery, Atlantis or Endeavour.
The privilege of showing off a shuttle won't be cheap -- about $42 million.  This figure will include $28.2 million for the removal of hazardous chemicals -- such as ammonia, used as a coolant, and nitrogen tetroxide and hydrazine, used as fuel; $5.8 million for moving the shuttle via a carrier aircraft to its new location; and $8 million for preparing the shuttle for display, Curie said.  A carrier aircraft will be the only way to deliver a shuttle to a landlocked location, and such aircraft will no longer be in NASA's budget once the shuttle program ends.  After chemicals are drained from the shuttle, its estimated weight will be about 170,000 pounds, Curie said.
Asked whether NASA had considered trying to sell the shuttles on eBay, [NASA spokesman Michael Curie] laughed: "No, that probably wouldn't be the prudent thing to do with something paid for by taxpayers' money."

Impacted the ground coming out of a loop at the Kingsville air show in Texas. The aircraft was from Shaw AFB, South Carolina. Pilot, Major Brison Phillips, did not eject. Six minutes into the scripted airshow the pilot executed a double Immelman maneuver to 21 seconds inverted followed by a split S maneuver. The inverted maneuver was standard to maintain position with ground references and the show line. Due to strong winds and unfamiliar ground references, the pilot channelized his atention on the ground references and the show line but not at his power setting en 12° dive angle. Higher than normal power and the dive caused him to descend rapidly from 6,300 feet to 4,200 feet and accelerate from 132 knots to 444 knots. The pilot recognized this and pulled maximum G's but impacted the ground

If it's this one, the pilot did make it out in one piece.

September 14, 2003: 31-year-old Captain Chris Stricklin, flying Thunderbird 6 (opposing solo) failed to pull out of a dive but safely ejected at Mountain Home AFB in southwest Idaho. Stricklin miscalculated the altitude required to complete his opening maneuver, a "Split S". The elevation of the airfield was about 1100 feet higher than the team's home base at Nellis AFB. He climbed to an inadequate altitude of just 1670 feet above ground level, instead of 2500 feet, before initiating the pull-down dive of the Split S maneuver. Stricklin ejected when the rapidly descending F-16C was only 140 feet above ground - just 0.8 seconds prior to impact. His parachute deployed just above the ground and he sustained only minor injuries from the ejection. There were no injuries to any personnel or spectators on the ground.

Lucky to get out with his life.  Lost his ride.

McSpadden says Stricklin is an exceptional officer. "He is an extremely talented pilot. He came in here and made an honest mistake," says Lt. Col. McSpadden. But that mistake has cost Stricklin his prestigious spot on the Thunderbird team. "He's assigned to Washington D.C.," says McSpadden. "He's working in the Pentagon there in one of the agencies."

But I want to let her pick it out, and I don't want to shackle her to a particular store or brand, so I'm not buying a gift certificate. I still have no idea how I'm going to present this gift on xmas morning. I'd like to give her something to unwrap, even if the gift itself is really just money.

Get the budget in banded stacks of $1s from the bank, get a cheap briefcase, and wrap that.

8511  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Pain threshold (probably not good for your appetite) on: December 17, 2008, 09:13:45 PM
Due to a dermatological issue, I have been forced recently to confront my pain threshold and the history of pain that leads to my tolerance today.

The current stint involved the "painkiller" to numb the area, which is some of the worst pain that I have ever felt. On a previous surgery, my temples were the injection site. The pain was so bad that my eyes began streaming tears involuntarily.

My childhood history involves nasal warts being treated with the direct application of liquid nitrogen before finally being cured by laser surger in 6th grade. I also had to have the frenulum under my tongue clipped to remedy a speech impediment. Whatever they were using for anaesthetic didn't work well and I remember some excruciating pain from that. As a teenager, I was on asthma medication that needed monthly blood work to ensure my levels were in a safe range.

That leads us back to today where I will be having gauze shoved in this wound for the sixth time in the past two weeks and each new doctor who performs this task (urgent care clinic) commenting that I seem to be bearing up under the pain rather well. With my history, I should hope so...

So how well do you bear up under pain? Do you have a history written in pain? And has that numbed you to life's slings and arrows or made you hyper sensitive to every needle stick?
8512  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / I want to take her face ... off! on: December 17, 2008, 08:42:52 PM
A lot more drugs for that woman!

A horribly disfigured woman who lived like an outcast because of her appearance woke up Wednesday with a brand new face.  The Cleveland Clinic announced it has performed the first ever face transplant operation in the U.S. - and the most radical makeover of its kind ever.  Doctors replaced all but the woman's chin, lower lip, upper eyelids and forehead. The other 80% of her face was replaced with one donated from a female cadaver.  They also grafted on facial nerves and muscles so the woman's new face functions - and is not just a mask.
Before the operation, the transplant patient - whose face was ruined by some kind of traumatic accident - could not smile or smell or taste. Now, she can, doctors said.
It is only the fourth face transplant ever.
The Cleveland patient is healing rapidly. Transplant recipients run the risk their bodies will reject their new faces, so they are sentenced to a lifetime of taking immune-suppressing drugs.  A nasty side effect of these drugs is that it raises the odds of a patient coming down with cancer and other diseases.

Bioethicist Arthur Caplan said this is why face transplant patients need to know that assisted suicide is an option if the operation doesn't take.  "If your face rejects, it would be a living hell," said Caplan, of the University of Pennsylvania.

I've been working on clearing rooms via the SWAT method, where you move forward and turn to cover the opposite wall as it comes into view.  I've managed to get a few kills because I've taken a momentary respite in a corner and had someone stream right by me.  Always check the corners.

Vary your routes.  Don't keep marching down the same paths if there are alternate ways to get there.  Especially when it comes to the radio building on Airfield.  Unless you're playing against Hark, then don't even bother to attempt assaulting it.  Your death will come quickly, violently, and frequently.

Of course, I have the lowest K/D of anyone on my list, so take my advice with a grain of salt...  icon_confused
