06-07, Sabres were 53-22-7, 5 more wins than Ottawa, 4 more than New Jersey, 10 more than Atlanta, 3 more than Detroit, 4 more than Vancouver, and 5 more than Anaheim.  QFT

The Detroit Red Wings finished 1st (American division) in 1934, missed the playoffs in 1935, and won the Cup in 1936.
The New York Rangers finished 1st (Patrick division) in 1992, missed the playoffs in 1993, and won the Cup in 1994.

I had do some wiki digging to come up with the data.  The original quote didn't expand on the info or cite a source.

Plane diverted to O'Hare blows tire, goes off runway

Quote
"He ran out of concrete before he ran out of speed," one traffic controller source said of the pilot's landing.

Quote
The flight was scheduled to arrive in New York at 4:10 p.m., but was diverted to Chicago because of an electrical systems issue, said American Airlines spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan. The plane's instrument landing system was not working, meaning the pilots had to make a visual landing approach to Runway 22R, rather than relying on the computerized landing system, according to air traffic sources in Chicago.

The plane had to come in faster than normal because its pilots could not rely on their gauges to find them a safe speed and other readouts, the sources said. The plane couldn't slow quickly enough after getting on the ground and ended up with its front tires in the grass.

To expand on that line, it being the girl's left hand would lead me to believe that she was sitting directly behind her mother, out of her line of sight.  No mention of any other children or any reason why the child would be sitting out of view of her mother.

Here's a more detailed story.  The attached slideshow indicates that the mother was unaware that she was playing with it out the window.

With a 3-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on April 3, 2008 that eliminated the Sabres out of playoff contention, they became only the third team in NHL history to go from finishing first overall in the regular season standings to finishing out of the playoffs the following year. Both of the previous two teams to do so ended up winning the Stanley Cup the following year.

Story

Quote
Surgeons were able to reattach the hand of a six-year-old girl from South Bay, Calif., after a freak accident involving a jump rope cut it off, nbc11.com reported Monday.

Erica Rix was riding in the back of her mother’s SUV and dangling her jump rope out of the window with the rope's slip knot around her wrist. The other end of the rope became tangled in the car’s axle, and as the rope tightened around Erica’s left hand, it eventually sliced the hand off.

My girlfriend thinks my mental exhaustion comes from the fact that I am very introverted and quiet, but at work I'm in charge of 30 employees. That forces me to "wear" a personality that isn't my own. I really want to change fields altogether, but at 35 I feel like I'm on borrowed time and should already be properly nested in my career.

That's your parents' generation talking.  Go find you a nice computer job where at most you have to deal with your co-workers at most an hour a day.

I speak from experience.  My father was 14 years into his 21 total with the Air Force by my age.  I've tried comparing myself to him, and it just doesn't work.  The economy isn't set up for 20 and a gold watch.  Modern expectations that I've seen are that the average worker is expected to change careers 7 times during their working years.  Given how "stable" economies are these days, I can believe it.

I am on my second industry as a computer programmer.  I spent 11 years in the call centers, 3 of which as a Manager, at two different companies.  I am introverted like you, and managing employees was a mental drain.  Now that I'm a programmer, and a single one at that, I find that I have to work to get what little social interaction that I do need.

I just noticed this when I brought up Pandora on my iPhone.  Best Buy and Beck's will be advertising through the mobile version for 30 days each.  Hitting the add will take you to the Best Buy website without interrupting the music.  There's a banner right above the control bar.  It has a marker to kill the ad, but it pops back up as soon as a new song starts.

The return of Adam Baldwin's current vehicle will most likely lead to the death of the Sara Connor Chronicles.  When faced with a "pick two" between SCC, Chuck, and the CBS comedy block (The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother), I hate to say that the loser in this battle will be Summer Glau's show.  That, and SCC is going up against Heroes this week as well.  What were they thinking?

All praise Adam Baldwin!

The PTB have decided that Sara Connor Chronicles needs to be up against the CBS comedy block and the Chuck season premiere next week.  I see them losing that battle for my attention.  I can record two blocks.  Adam Baldwin and Neil Patrick Harris will be getting my time.

I went up against Gumps (Buffalo vs. Minnesota) tonight.  It certainly wasn't about ball control, what with 9 turnovers taking the form of both interceptions (one of which went goal line to goal line for the first score of the game for Gumps) and fumbles (one of which was returned 65 yards by Buffalo, stopped short of a TD by being run down from behind by Adrian Peterson).

There were 4 attempts on 4th downs, the one for Buffalo on 4th and 1 after a failed 3rd and 1 resulted in a TD through an uncovered WR.  Minnesota converted 2 of 3.  One of these was a 1 yd Adrian Peterson run.  The failed attempt resulted in a Buffalo interception to be spotted at the 1 yard line.

All in all, a hard fought game that came down to mistakes (Buffalo +1 on turnovers) and clock management, as Buffalo made the go ahead score with less than a minute to play in the game.

Adrian Peterson was the top rusher with 64 yards and 1 TD.  Trent Edwards threw for 263 yards through the air with 2 TDs, 3 picks, and a 78.1 QB rating.

I'm 11-3 before the Dallas game.  Got to watch a guy at the bar that had bet on the Giants with the 6.5 point spread lose it when the game got tied.  Made even sweeter by him wearing Dallas gear sitting in a Bills bar.

We also had about 5 Raiders fan who were much classier when a Buffalo player went down, applauding when he got up and walked off the field.  In their defense for choice of venue, they were at that location last week as well.

17 points in the 4th quarter?!

Could this be a special season?

The wins keep getting uglier.  Lost of dropped balls, more than Week 1 when they were playing in the rain.

3G iPhones for cracking are likely to be rarer than 1st gen, the reason being that the 3G iPhones must be activated in the stores, which means that someone somewhere took the hit on the contract or $175 term fee.  When you compare that to the $300 discount, that certainly can have an impact.

YMMV, but as a CC manager w/AT&T (now former), on rare occasions I would approve the transfer of contract time from one line to the other.

Result would be to place remaining contract on your line onto your wife's number, allowing you to cancel/port your line to another carrier.  The front line reps at any carrier will most likely not be able to pull the trigger on this w/o manager approval, assuming there's a manager as cool as me nearby.    icon_cool

I'm doing much better than I was last year, but then that was just a recovery from the last collapse.  As a computer programmer, I got out of school in May of 2000 and the job market collapsed shortly thereafter, leaving me to attempt to get a programming job through my call center experience.  After 7 years of fits and starts, I finally gave up on the city (and relationship) that I was in and got an offer in November of last year to move to Dallas.

My current job is a programmer for a privately-held company that writes bank software for customer contact personnel at various levels.  They've been around for 28 years, serve the largest consumer banks in the industry, and have never laid off a programmer.  Assuming I don't find a way to screw it up, I should be siting pretty through this one.

That being said, my rough estimate is that between my consumer debt and student loans, I'm in hock for 1.5 years' worth of my salary.  It's going to be a long, slow climb out.

Port blocking
Although the official Terms of Service (TOS) does not specify any exact blocked ports, the language does suggest that at a minimum incoming port 80 and outgoing port 25 may in fact be blocked. At one time, section 3.7.5 stated that "you may not use the Broadband Service to host any type of server whether personal or commercial in nature"; however, later updates to the AUP removed that language and currently (as of 14 May 2008) merely prohibit resale, abuse or use of the service for "high volume purposes." (What constitutes "high volume" is not defined.) Section 11.2 states that Verizon reserves the right to block "selected ports" to provide for email security.

Business FiOS service is available in some areas, with higher upload speeds, static IP addresses and no blocked ports (for the static IP option).
