7963  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / One dead, four injured in Blackhawk crash at Texas A&M on: January 13, 2009, 12:06:13 AM

One person died when an Army Blackhawk helicopter crashed into a field near the Corps of Cadets quad on the campus of Texas A&M University Monday afternoon, injuring four others on board, according to CBS station KBTX in College Station, Texas.

The Army UH-60 Blackhawk had a crew of five on board, including four members of the Army National Guard and one member of the ROTC staff at Texas A&M who is a recent graduate, according to Texas A&M officials. The helicopter was reportedly taking off when it fell abruptly back to the ground.

According to the College Station fire department, three of the four wounded had critical injuries, KBTX reported.

Anybody heard anything about Thunder over Vegas??

The chance to fly Thunderbird missions over my childhood home is a strong attractor.  That being said, I've never seemed to master normal formation flying and think air-to-air refueling is one of the most unnatural acts man has ever attempted.  My luck and lack of precision skills would probably having me duplicate the Diamond Crash of 1982..   icon_cry

I don't believe that I have ever seen an ejection system used on anything other than a military craft.  Ejection if a violent, dangerous task made even remotely acceptable by the (non)alternative to military pilots.

Quote from: FoxNews
The pilot, identified as Marc Schrenker, was taken to a hotel in Childersburg, Ala., by a police officer after the 38-year-old man told officials he'd been in a canoeing accident, WALA-TV said.  The officer was unaware at the time that a single-engine Piper Malibu had crashed in a swampy area near Milton, Fla. The plane crashed at about 9:20 p.m. CST.
Schrenker apparently paid for his hotel room in cash, checking in under a false name, WALA-TV said. He fled into a wooded area near the hotel, police said.

Awareness bracelets gained in popularity in the 2004 when the Lance Armstrong Foundation introduced its trademark yellow Livestrong wristband to raise support for cancer research.[3] By early 2005, silicone wristbands became popular with many charities, such as Make Poverty History and the BBC's Beat Bullying campaign. Other wristbands include wristbands for kidney donation (green), breast cancer (pink), diabetes (blue), multiple sclerosis (orange), epilepsy (half blue, half red), Hurricane Katrina (ocean blue mixed with white), and AIDS (red, made only in Africa). In general, the color of the band describes its cause, and the colors are often the same as the colors of awareness ribbons.

Ribbon colors

AIDS awareness
Substance abuse awareness

Lyme disease (lime green)
Organ transplantation and donation awareness
Environmental protection
Worn by Irish nationalists, representing their want for a united Ireland

Sex trafficking and slavery awareness (navy blue)
"Bring Home Our Troops" campaign
Child abuse awareness
Prostate cancer awareness (sky blue)
Electronic Frontier Foundation's Online Free Speech
Canada's anti-tobacco, anti-second hand smoke
Spain's campaign for the release of Basque terrorists' kidnap victims
"Responsible use of public lands for the benefit of all recreationists"
International No Diet Day
Hydranencephaly awareness

Ribbon-wise they have Diabetes listed as a grey ribbon, Cystic Fibrosis listed as purple.  I found other internet sources that had mitochondrial disease associated with green ribbons.  That being said, I have not ever worn one to support a cause.  My previous employee put out some for employees in an orange color to be a rah-rah type thing.
7969  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Wealth management president thought to stage airplane crash on: January 12, 2009, 06:57:45 PM
CNN Wire via NY Daily News

The pilot who signaled air traffic controllers that his windshield had imploded and that he was bleeding profusely before his plane crashed was apparently faking the call, and was spotted using a fake name early Monday, authorities said.  Authorities identified the pilot as Marcus Schrenker.
"All indications now are that he made some type of false emergency call (and) abandoned the plane by parachute," Sgt. Scott Haines of the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office told CNN.  Haines said Schrenker checked into a hotel in the Harpersville, Alabama, area under a false name.
Kathleen Bergen, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said several factors make authorities believe the pilot may have gotten out of the plane before the crash: a "detailed review of radar data," the fact that the plane was switched to autopilot before it crashed, the fact that military jet crews that saw the crash spotted the door open before the plane hit ground, and the fact that the cockpit was found mostly intact with no one inside.
After the pilot alerted air traffic controllers about the problems he was having, authorities tried to tell him to land in Pell City, Alabama, Haines said. But the pilot "did not prove responsive," and the plane appeared to have been put on autopilot at around 2,000 feet.  Military aircraft from Whiting Field were dispatched to intercept the plane. The flyers fired flares and noticed the plane's door was open and the cockpit was dark, Haines said in a news release about the incident.  The military jet crews saw the plane crash, Haines said. The crash took place about 9:15 p.m. CT.

CeeKay, if you like French Revolution stuff, might I recommend the Sharpe's Rifles series?  15 made for TV movies from the BBC starring Sean Bean as a rifleman during that conflict?  I just finished the 16th  eek episode via Netflix.  The 17th was released on 2 Nov 2008 to British television, so I'm hoping to get more info on it soon.

As for AC, I played it a while, realized that all my combat devolved into quicktime events with the counter system, and sent it back to GameFly.

7984  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Boston firefighter killed when truck crashes into building on: January 09, 2009, 09:57:02 PM

One firefighter was killed and one received life-threatening injuries when a Boston Fire Department ladder truck crashed into a building today on Huntington Avenue in the city's Mission Hill neighborhood, law enforcement officials said.  The truck barreled into the building at 835 Huntington Ave. at about 2:32 p.m. One city official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the truck may have lost its brakes as it hurtled down a steep hill.
When the truck struck the building, it crashed into a computer lab where seven children, ages 7 to 12, were working on an after-school project, according to resident David Ramos, 46. ... All of the children's injuries appeared to be minor, Ramos said.
Boston Police were trying to determine the cause of the accident. Fire officials on the scene cautioned against speculation about the cause of the crash, but truck maintenance has been an issue during ongoing contract talks between the firefighters' union and the city, as has random drug and alcohol testing of firefighters.

My Dad was one of the first 100 crew chiefs on the Eagle.  We spent 77-79 in Bitburg, Germany.  If I recall his story right, he was also on the crew for barrier testing when they ripped the tailhook out of the back because the acceptable speed that McDonnell Douglas had listed was way too high.  He proved it wasn't a maintenance issue because they took Polaroids of all the components before testing.

One of the things that can impact them on this case is the delay.  I don't know how much parallels there are between patents and trademarks, but there was the case of Whataburger vs. What-A-Burger references laches, the claim that the party "slept on its rights" and that the delay of what, a decade, means that the failure to reasonably exercise their rights in a timely manner negates their claim.

Several years ago when I was in the heyday of actually playing flightsims (unlike, as my buddy calls it, my current static displays), I went to a party that actually had some military pilots in attendance.  I was actually able to impress them with my knowledge of the radar model and modes and have a bit of a conversation with them.

It probably helps that I'm an Air Force brat of an aircraft maintainer, but I was (and am) still geeked when I can intelligently talk shop with military personnel.

Now I need to go bust out my Saitek X-36 (which has a rocker for rudder control) and re-learn my boresite from my TWS....

Based on the complicity of Microsoft with the manufacturers on your second point, I would say that a larger portion of the hate is deserved than you are currently willing to attribute to Vista.  Yes, it's not the fault of the OS that it has dishonest parents.  But that doesn't make its behavior any easier to tolerate when it comes to live with you.
